What our students

Completing my workplace experience at ITV Granada in MediaCityUK was an eye-opening experience that revealed what it takes to produce a live television news broadcast. Touring the busy newsroom showed how journalists work under real deadlines—researching, verifying facts, and crafting stories with precision and teamwork.

Attending a pre-broadcast meeting highlighted the importance of communication between presenters, producers, and technical staff to ensure everything runs smoothly. Watching a live news broadcast from the studio floor demonstrated how calmness, accuracy, and coordination are vital under pressure.

I also learned about the technical aspects of broadcasting— camera work, lighting, sound, and editing—and gained insight into different career pathways in the media industry. Overall, the experience deepened my appreciation for the creativity, resilience, and collaboration required in journalism and inspired me to pursue a career in media and television production.

What our students shared

In my workplace experience, I worked at my mum’s optician practice. I was shown what an average day would be like over the duration of my stay and was guided through some of the processes that would be completed, including an average eye test. I helped by making phone calls to arrange and book in appointments as well as organise files into their respective compartments. It was immensely interesting to see the inner workings of an unfamiliar environment, and I considered it valuable in teaching me some important skills for the world of work. In your work experience, you will learn like this to prepare yourselfforyour lifeafter education.
