
Year 7 Overview


Throughout Year 7, pupils will enjoy two novels, a play by William Shakespeare and a suite of complementary non-fiction and poetry texts. They will learn about different cultures and time periods and they will start to master the skill of using evidence from a text to support their views. Pupils will write creatively and persuasively for a range of different tasks, audiences and purposes.

During Year 8, pupils study three genres of literature: Gothic, Dystopian and Shakespearean tragedy with aspects of SPAG revisited to ensure competency. Pupils build on their understanding of how to write creatively and how writers use language to achieve specific effects. Their ability to use subject specific vocabulary is a focal point as is their ability to speak for a variety of purposes e.g. to entertain, in role and to share their views.

Throughout Year 9, pupils fine-tune their ability to read and respond to challenging texts empathetically, evaluatively and analytically. Pupils learn about the importance of a text's context and how this can elicit a deeper understanding of the characters, themes and ideas in poetry (war), plays and fiction. Areas of SPAG continue to be revisited to ensure competency and pupils are exposed to increasingly challenging tier 2 and 3 vocabulary. Pupils also explore non-fiction texts through our 'Body, Mind and Spirit' unit and learn to craft argumentative writing utilising a range of rhetorical techniques.
