School Council: How does it work?

Every fortnight after half term, an item is discussed in ‘Class Council’ during PSHE. The elected school councillors take notes to represent the class views. Councillors then feedback these views on behalf of their class to the Head Teacher. Decisions may be made; reflected on and feedback is then shared in the next ‘Class Council’ alongside a new item on the agenda. The cycle repeats

This two-way process ensures all children are regularly given the opportunity to express their feelings and thoughts around the topics that matter to them. We all work together to influence positive change in our school.

What was the impact last year?

-Purchased new resources to improve the lunchtime experience

-Voted on how we wanted to spend enrichment time at Christmas

-Influenced the genre and topics of new books purchased for the library

-Influenced the reward & recognition systems we have today

-Gave vital feedback to teachers about the subject disciplines we like the most – and least

-Prioritized opening the Activity Cube four days a week during the Summer Term at lunchtime

Prioritized opening the EYFS area during lunchtimes for a whole range of age groups to enjoy

-Influenced how our ‘transition week’ in school was timetabled

-Influenced decision-making at a senior level in school for something exciting starting this January!

This Year’s Appointments

In order for School Council to work effectively (as above), there needs to be only a small number of councillors. This year, one form each year group (1 – 5) and two Head Pupils in Year 6 were appointed.

Individual praise was personally given to every child who applied and every child who made it as far as the interview stage, or got the role. Personal emails should have been sent to parents from our Chair of Governors.

Although this is one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever given myself to do (it’s not compulsory!), it also created many, quite frankly, heart-warming moments. The strength of character your children showed and the well-wishes they received from their peers (some who applied themselves; others who didn’t) made multiple staff members quite emotional and extremely proud. This process is character-building and excellent preparation for what may lie ahead in our pupils’ pathways and their personal development, generally.

Thank You parents for your support. Our official school council meetings start after half term although there will be an opportunity for some initial, informal meetings/preparation with School Council/Head Pupils before half term.

Wicksteed Park: 9th July 2025

As part of their enterprise projects, the Year 6s will try and raise funds to subsidise this.

FOES are also lending a helping hand with a special fundraising event, just for the Year 6s in February. Thank you so much, FOES.

Parents’ Evening Appointments

Apologies from the office staff for initial glitches and thank you for your patience as we now get used to ‘How to setup Parents’ Evenings using Arbor’!

Look forward to seeing you next week. Tea & coffee will be in the library if you wish to pop in for a cuppa.

Learning Highlights of the Week

Highlight Antony:

This week in Antony Class we have been exploring 2D shape, exploring the different features of each shape and using them to create pictures and patterns. As part of our RE work, we learnt about the Jewish festival of Sukkot and built sukkahs.

Highlight Wenzel:

Our Time to Shine Cricket session this week was a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop their communication and teamwork skills. It started with a warm-up in which they had to carefully follow verbal instructions to run, wait or go back. Once the class were quick at this, they had to follow non-verbal instructions instead! It was great to see the children's concentration and speed. They then took turns batting and running, or fielding in teams and were giving encouragement and support to each other well.

Highlight Larwood:

Highlight Rauf:

In Larwood Class this week, we have enjoyed finding out about the Jewish festivals of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur - it was particularly nice to partake in the tradition of sharing Challah bread with friends. We have also enjoyed learning about the locality of Earith, calculating with measurements and painting still life

The highlight this week has been witnessing the incredible progress our young cricketers have made during PE lessons. It’s been a joy to see their skills and understanding grow every single week. From mastering the fundamentals of throwing techniques to refining their batting skills, each child has shown a huge improvement. It's been exciting to see them develop - not just as players, but as budding cricket enthusiasts! Well done, Rauf Class
