READING

Oneof ourkey priorities is developingreading.

Westrongly believereadingunderpins ourchildren's successesacross the curriculum.

The requirementof allchildren is toread at leastthree timesperweekat home. Each child willbe issuedwith a readingrecord for parents torecord their child’s readingeach week. This willbe checked in school.

This half termwe have assignedreadingbooks basedontheir final phonics assessmentscompletedin reception.Wehave usedtheseas a guide andwill reassessbefore Octoberhalf term.

Children willhave the same twobooks for a weekandthese willbe changed every Friday. Pleasere-read the books throughout the week,as this helps develop children’s fluency andword recognition.

Homework is set weekly on a Thursday to be returned by Tuesday the following week.

Homework will be sent home via the homework book and will vary between Maths, English and Foundation subject based homework and will usually focus around something the children have already learnt in school.

We like to teach the children responsibility and to take pride in this work as this sets them in good stead as the move further through school.

HOMEWORK

KEY ASSESSMENTS

In Year 1, children will take the Phonics Screening check. They sit this 1:1 with their class teacher and the expectation is for them to read 40 words to demonstrate their decoding skills.

There is no pressure on the children during this and we do regular practise assessments throughout the year so that by the time the children sit the real one they are very used to them.

Phonics Screening week is Week commencing Monday 10th June 2024. If for any reason your child has a planned absence this week, please let us know.
