We can’t believe that we are in Year 6 already; the school years at Chapelford are so much fun that time flies by! At our school, we have so many special opportunities to experience different things such as learning to play different instruments, how to give first aid, meeting visitors who make our learning even more interesting, going on trips and even sleeping over with our friends on the residential visits every year from Year 2 to 6. In Year 6 this year, we are really looking forward to our two-night trip to Robinwood and our trip to London.

RECEPTION
Our Reception provision is divided into three classrooms, each equipped with high quality resources indoors and out. Our purpose-built classrooms are designed specifically with young learners in mind, featuring child-sized sinks and worktops. We believe that a comfortable and child-friendly environment promotes engagement and active learning.
We have an outdoor space exclusively for our Reception children which has been thoughtfully designed to enhance the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. This outdoor area is utilised daily by the children for planned activities and continuous exploration. It provides them with ample opportunities to learn and grow, linking the indoors and outdoors seamlessly.
Our curriculum approach is underpinned by a strong understanding of how children learn with continuous opportunities for outdoor play, exploratory learning and a high-quality learning environment. We focus on seven areas of learning as set out in the Early Years curriculum. Our teaching approach balances adult-led instruction with child-initiated activities, ensuring a holistic learning experience.
We are an inclusive school and it is of the utmost importance to us that we celebrate the diversity of our pupils and our local community.
We know that when a child is happy, they feel confident to explore the world around them and develop a curiosity about why things happen and even how to do things better. At Chapelford we follow a mental well-being programme, Happy Minds, which we start sharing with our youngest children. This supports them to understand how the brain works, celebrate their own character strengths and develop positive relationships with other people.

OUR CURRICULUM
Our curriculum is carefully designed to provide depth, balance and breadth of learning experiences for every child. We believe in the importance of going beyond content coverage and focusing on the deepening of essential knowledge, skills, understanding and learning behaviours.
Our curriculum design, organisation and planning ensures that children have ample opportunities for retrieval, repetition and practice in every subject. By revisiting previous learning, children gradually develop a deeper understanding of skills and processes at their own pace.
We believe in an inclusive and diverse curriculum that is ambitious and equips children with the knowledge they need for success in life. We continually monitor, evaluate and review our curriculum to ensure that children achieve depth in their learning, apply their knowledge across subjects and become lifelong learners. Our curriculum embraces both formal requirements and enriching educational visits and residential experiences. We prioritise a mix of academic and personal development, placing equal importance on core and foundation subjects to ensure a wellrounded education for all our pupils.
Full details of our curriculum can be found on our website.

DEPTH
Our signature curriculum is meticulously planned to move children’s thinking to a higher order of deep-level understanding, rather than simply acquiring new facts and knowledge. We aim to foster critical thinking, problem-solving abilities and the application of knowledge across various subjects. Through this approach, we enable children to utilise their skills, knowledge and understanding in all areas of the curriculum.
BALANCE
We provide a balanced curriculum for each child. Our underlying belief is that everyone should feel valued and experience success in a wide range of curriculum areas. We aim to identify and nurture the unique gifts and talents of each child, offering them opportunities to explore and develop these talents. We place high priority on the physical and mental well-being of our children as we understand that emotional security is essential for successful learning.
BREADTH
Our curriculum is designed to provide breadth for every child. We analyse and discuss our childrens’ backgrounds, life experiences and cultures to create a curriculum with three key priorities:
provide experiences that inspire aspiration and expose our children to a wide range of possibilities for their future and social mobility. offer experiences that help them become resilient, independent and adaptable learners.
provide experiences that foster a sense of environmental responsibility, helping our pupils value and sustain their school, local and global environment.
We offer a range of experiences that contribute and empower children with the skills, confidence and self-belief to lead happy and fulfilled lives, encouraging them to aim high and work towards their goals and dreams.

ENGLISH AND READING
At Chapelford Village Primary School our love of books, our passion for literacy and our desire to inspire our pupils is driven through a wellsequenced, progressive and ambitious curriculum with engaging and immersive, high-quality texts at heart.
We strongly believe that a secure understanding of literacy skills is crucial to a high quality education across the curriculum and for success in life beyond education. By the end of our children’s learning journey in Year 6, they have been exposed to a broad range of text types and genres celebrating a variety of cultures and values.
We nurture a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly, imaginatively and accurately and adapt their language and style for a range of contexts.
We work extensively with specialist Literacy Consultants to continuously review and develop our curriculum adapting it to the needs of our pupils. Through careful planning and sequencing of skills, we inspire our children to be confident in the art of speaking and listening and to use discussion to communicate and further their learning in all areas of the curriculum.
We pride ourselves on the investment we have placed on reading resources and environments in school. We strive to ensure our classroom reading areas are a place where children are eager to go and read, with comfy beanbags, a range of books and a celebration of authors. In every classroom, children will find a basket of books appropriate to their age and stage, which include a wide range of genres and appeal to all interests. This allows every child to be able to pick a book that they will enjoy but also will challenge them at the appropriate level. To further promote reading for pleasure and sharing stories at home, there are a range of books including fiction, nonfiction and poetry.
An author is chosen every half term for each year group and is someone whom the children can learn about and be inspired by. The author is celebrated within the reading area with a range of their books available to share and enjoy as a class. We work closely with subject leaders across the school to develop a reading spine for each curriculum subject. This ensures that a range of topic and information books are used to inspire and engage our pupils as well as fostering their love of learning and broadening their subject knowledge through reading.

MATHEMATICS
Maths is a journey and long-term goal, achieved through exploration, clarification, practice and application over time. At each stage of learning, children should be able to demonstrate a deep, conceptual understanding of the topic and be able to build on this over time.
Using state of the art technology, a vast array of maths resources and carefully planned, personalised learning opportunities, children at Chapelford make excellent progress across the school.
Being able to calculate fluently and make connections in number patterns is essential to building confidence in Maths. With this in mind, we teach a discrete lesson each week to really focus on basic skills as well as teaching times tables three times a week. Children are motivated along the way with certificates, times tables wristbands and the ultimate reward of earning a times tables badge on completion of all twelve times tables.
Parents are supported to help their child with teacher led drop-in sessions throughout the school. Alongside home learning opportunities, children enjoy building speed and accuracy through the use of apps such as Mathletics and Times Tables Rockstars which help learning through fun and interactive games.

STEM SUBJECTS
Technology plays a pivotal role in the teaching of our Science, Technology,Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects. We encourage our children to explore the exciting world of innovation through inquiry based learning techniques.
We proudly hold the Science Mark accreditation, which acknowledges our strong practice in science education throughout the school. Our personalised curriculum connects science to real-life experiences and we stimulate curiosity and motivation amongst our children, empowering them to build their academic knowledge with the guidance of their teachers.
Each year, further unique opportunities are offered for all children to immerse themselves in the world of science. We regularly introduce them to inspirational scientists from history, showcasing their profound impact on our world.
Our classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art resources including flat screen interactive displays and visualisers. Our classrooms feature a set of iPads that also supports learning experiences across the curriculum. We prioritise digital safety and offer weekly lessons that cover essential topics such as website trustworthiness and safe internet usage.
We use virtual reality (VR) headsets which enhance the overall learning experience in all curriculum subjects by immersing our children in engaging and interactive educational content.

CREATIVE OPPORTUNITIES
At Chapelford, we strive to provide a wealth of opportunities to discover hidden talents and strengths and encourage new interests. In Music, we are committed to not only ensuring that children listen to, evaluate and perform music, but also to giving every child the opportunity to learn different instruments from Year 1 through to Year 6. From glockenspiel to drums to a full year tuition with a brass instrument in Year 5. We also offer after school clubs such as Sign and Sing and music tuition as well as showcasing the talents of our school choir at both community and regional events.
In Art and Design, we engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. We teach art in a cross curricular way so that the children are immersed in the culture and vocabulary of each topic. Each year group focusses on a specific artist each half term which spans a range of cultures, periods and crafts raising the children’s aspirations and promoting the arts as a potential career choice. This also allows the children to know how art and design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT
Physical Education is crucial to developing well-rounded, resilient children who strive to achieve the very best they can.
At Chapelford Village Primary School, we are dedicated to raising the profile and standards of PE across the school to support children’s health and well-being. We are committed to providing our children with an enriched curriculum which is based on gymnastics, dance, net and wall games, invasion games, striking and fielding and athletics. The fundamental skills of physical education are delivered through high quality lessons that provide progressive skills and knowledge throughout the children’s learning journey.
For a half term every year, our KS2 pupils learn to swim in a hired pool based at school which enables lessons to be completed daily for a more intense approach. This enables progress to be more rapid and ensures all children reach the expected levels.
Every pupil has the opportunity to participate in fun, challenging and rewarding learning where they are encouraged to express themselves through physical activity. All children have at least two hours of PE a week as well as many other opportunities to be physically active including during structured breaks and lunchtime activities. We are
fortunate enough to have the use of outdoor and indoor spaces to conduct high quality lessons utilising a vast range of sporting equipment as well as a multi-use games area (MUGA).
Children in all year groups are also involved in a wide range of competitions throughout the year, both competitive and non-competitive which means that all pupils have the chance to represent the school in a variety of opportunities – there have been many victories and team achievements! Some of these competitions include:
Cross country
Football
Netball
Gymnastics
Athletics

OUTDOOR PLAY AND LEARNING PROGRAMME
At Chapelford Village Primary School, we believe that our playtimes are a vital part of the school day and essential for our children’s personal development and well-being. Our outstanding outdoor spaces are designed to inspire creativity, imagination and physical activity, offering a wide range of high-quality resources that encourage both social and personal development.
We are proud to implement the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme, which allows children to explore and enjoy various play zones across the school grounds, all under the supervision of our dedicated staff. We strongly support the idea that every child should have the chance to experience exciting, high-quality play every day, as play helps children learn important life skills that can’t always be taught in the classroom.
Thanks to the joint efforts of our parents and school community in fundraising and developing the grounds, we offer fantastic play opportunities for all ages. Whether it’s sailing off on a make-believe adventure, engaging in role-play and drama, digging for dinosaur bones in the sandpit, racing on the scooter track or enjoying various sports, our play areas are designed to inspire creativity and support the well-rounded development of every child, for all ages.

OUTDOOR LEARNING AND FOREST SCHOOL
We know that children benefit in many ways when learning outside of the classroom and we encourage this as much as possible in the everyday life of school. Whether this is a visit to our on-site forest school with its dedicated cabin and caravan, a visit to the outdoor classroom, use of the orienteering routes or just learning in a different way in a different space, our dedicated teachers relish a chance to get outdoors with the children.
Our forest school is well-developed and enables children to embrace learning opportunities in the natural world. Alongside mastering practical skills such as building a den or lighting a fire, children are supported to become resourceful, resilient and reflective learners. They learn to recognise and plan for risks as they arise which helps with problem solving in real life situations.

RESIDENTIALS AND VISITS
Our signature curriculum not only includes the formal requirements but also rich and deep educational visit and residentials that we carefully plan to enrich the learning experience.
Our enrichment activities are organised on a termly basis and reviewed regularly by the school council and student population. We know that this time away with friends, developing independence and resilience is where lifelong memories are made. We pride ourselves on the longstanding residential visits that children are provided with from Year 2 to Year 6 inclusive. Opportunities include den building, campfires, immersive detective adventures and even scooter safaris to learn orienteering skills. These are also further supplemented by engagement in purposeful educational day visits to support learning across the curriculum, including seaside visits, theatre trips, animal experiences and museum trips.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
We provide our children with a wide range of rich experiences to support their personal development across the curriculum in a variety of ways. They provide opportunities for our children to develop their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development as well as developing interests and a deeper understanding of the world around them. We couldn’t possibly list all that we offer but some opportunities include:

Pupil Roles
Throughout their time at Chapelford, children are offered many opportunities to take on supportive roles across school. Each year, through a democratic vote, the School Council team is elected. This pivotal role ensures that pupil voice is at the heart of everything we do. Through regular meetings, led by an elected chairperson, treasurer and secretary, children discuss and offer feedback on key school issues whilst also developing charity fundraising opportunities to give to back to the school, community and other worthy causes.
Nominated and voted for by teachers, the coveted role of Ambassador recognises and celebrates children who consistently demonstrate impeccable behaviour and a commitment to following school rules and values. They are shining examples of a Chapelford child.
Other roles include Reading Ambassadors, Ecowarriors, Sports Ambassadors, Safety Team and Play Leaders. Children look forward to Year 6 when they can become a ‘buddy’ to others in Reception; they enjoy reading stories to them, helping at lunch times, supporting with P.E and more importantly, being a welcoming, friendly faces for the younger children to recognise in school.

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION
Every child is unique and different. Our curriculum is designed to give all learners the knowledge, understanding, confidence and resilience they need to succeed in life. We work closely in partnership with parents and carers to ensure that our children, regardless of any additional needs, difficulties or disabilities, develop the attitudes and skills to enable them to learn.
Highly skilled teachers provide exceptional quality teaching to all children with a developed repertoire of strategies that they can apply flexibly to respond to the individual starting points of children within the classroom. If additional support is needed, the children will have Individual Support Plans put in place and their class teacher will keep you fully informed about the work being carried out to support both you and your child in working alongside the school to achieve the next steps.
We are committed to each child’s personal development, well-being and academic success.
To achieve this, we foster a climate of positive interactions between peers, teachers and support staff, ensure that pupils are well supported by trained support staff and carefully tailor interventions and personal strategies including the use of technology. We aim for children and staff to have an excellent understanding of mental health and emotions through our My Happy Minds curriculum which has age-appropriate weekly lessons and activities which the children enjoy.

We are fortunate to have a designated SENDCo with great flexibility in a working week. This allows for timely and convenient contact, detailed advice and referrals, responsiveness to various needs of children and families as we endeavour to minimise barriers to learning and wellbeing. Ongoing staff training ensures excellent understanding of a range of conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, early life trauma and how these affect children in their care.
Pivotal to the ethos of our school is that we believe everyone should feel safe, happy, and cared for. To enable this to happen, we have a committed pastoral team who support our pupils and families throughout their time with us. We access the local Mental Health team support and have trained Emotion Literacy Support Assistants along with access to a Play Therapist and professional advice when needed.
ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE
Chapelford welcomes children with English as an additional language at various points in their primary journey. Our goal is to quickly integrate all children into school life, encouraging their participation in daily routines and structures. We aim to develop their understanding of academic English and social use and we value and acknowledge their home culture, language and background. We strive for continuous learning and application in every lesson, focusing on oracy and reading skills.
We collaborate with parents to ensure a smooth transition from visits to the school, meeting the teacher, buddy system for peer support and regular check ins with parents during the transition stage. Upon arrival, our children receive a school tour and a welcome pack containing information about the school, its layout and key staff members.
With dedicated bi-lingual staff on board, children are immediately made to feel welcome and part of the Chapelford family.
