ave you ever gone birdwatching before? Birdwatching is when you … well, watch birds. (Who saw that coming?) You might think that to be a birdwatcher, you have to travel deep into the wilderness to find a bird’s nest or climb a very big hill so that you’re high in the sky!

However, you can actually birdwatch in your garden, or in a park near your home. That’s what an event called the Big Garden Birdwatch is all about! The Big Garden Birdwatch started yesterday (23 January) and lasts for the whole of this weekend. During this time, around 600,000 people will be in their gardens, or in outdoor spaces near to where they live –

They’ll also be counting the number of each type of bird that lands in the place where they’re birdwatching. The information that they gather will then be sent to the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds), who will use this to find out how

So why not take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch this year? All you need to do is spend an hour outside – and prepare yourself to see some truly beautiful birds. By taking part, you’ll be working together with people from all around the country to look after the birds we can spot in our skies!

To find out more about how you can take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch, visit rspb.org.uk/whats-happening/big-garden-birdwatch

I love looking out of our window to see what birds are on our bird feeder. Unfortunately, sometimes I forget to refill the bird feeder and I always feel worried that the birds will be hungry. That reminds me of a great part of the Bible. In Matthew 6:25–34 Jesus talks about birds. He says that the birds don’t worry about planting or storing food, and God takes care of them. Just like the birds, Jesus wants us to know that we can trust that God will give us what we need. That doesn’t mean that we should put our feet up on the sofa and wait for everything to come to us. What Jesus meant was that we shouldn’t let our worries about the future get in the way of our friendship with God. So even though it can be hard, do your best not to worry, and trust that God will look after you!

Read the comment below about how what’s inside is the most important

Small Shepherd to Super King

ave you ever heard the phrase, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’? This is a phrase that’s been used for a long time, and it basically means that we shouldn’t look at what’s on the outside, because what’s on the inside is more important. For example, a book might have a really rubbish cover, or it might be old and tatty. However, that doesn’t mean that the story inside it isn’t fantastic!

That’s what this week’s Bible cartoon is also about. King Saul had stopped doing what God wanted him to do, so God decided Israel needed a new king. That’s where Samuel came in – he had to find and anoint the new king. God had told Samuel to go and see Jesse’s sons. First, Samuel met Jesse’s oldest son, Eliab. Eliab might have been the oldest and most handsome of the

brothers, but God knew that he wouldn’t make the best king. And neither would the other brothers, until finally Samuel met David. David was the youngest and the smallest brother, so on the outside he might not have seemed like the best choice for king. However, God saw inside David and knew that he had a good heart and loved God.

To God, David’s heart and personality were far more important than how he looked on the outside, and it’s the same for us. God doesn’t care if we have the fanciest clothes, the biggest muscles or the most luscious hair. What God cares about is how we feel about him, and how we treat other people. Having a loving, kind and good heart is most important.

King Choice Challenge

There are three different potential kings listed below. Read the descriptions and decide which one you think God would choose as king

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

Titus’s Task

Timothy wasn’t the only one of Paul’s friends to be given an important mission – a pal of Paul’s called Titus had a task to complete too! Titus had been asked by Paul to stay on the island of Crete. This was so that he could help the Christians living there to choose people to lead their churches.

This wasn’t an easy job. Crete was a dangerous place to live at the time – full of liars, greedy people and violence. So to encourage Titus in his mission, Paul wrote … you guessed it, another letter! Wow, Paul wrote a lot of letters, didn’t he?

This letter told Titus to stop bad leaders in the church from spreading lies about how a Christian should live. It then gave instructions for how Christians should actually live, with advice for people of all ages. Finally, Paul reminded Titus of who the church was serving – Jesus!

? ?

My name’s Rodney and I’m 45 years old. I’m an artist who likes to paint portraits and landscapes! At the moment, my favourite thing to do is stand outside football stadiums and paint fans arriving for a match. That’s because I love watching and playing football (I support Spurs). As well as painting pictures, I also help others to learn how to paint by showing them how to do it during demonstrations and workshops. I don’t really have a normal day or even a normal week. Every day is different, but I’m very often painting in my studio, which is at the end of my garden. Or I’m painting out and about on a street somewhere! I’m only a short train journey away from London, so I like to paint scenes of famous landmarks like St Paul’s Cathedral and the River Thames and its many bridges. I’m my own boss, which is pretty cool – but the best thing about my job is that I get to do something I love every day! If you want to become a professional artist, the best thing to do is to draw and paint as often as possible. When I was at school, I used to draw all the time. The more you do something, the better you get at it – so practise, practise, practise!

National Puzzle Day

Pick up your pencils and put on your thinking caps, because this Thursday (29 January) is National Puzzle Day. This is a day to celebrate how spiffing all puzzles are – from crosswords to Sudokus. It’s also the perfect opportunity to have a go at a few puzzles yourself!

Over the next two pages, we’ll show you why puzzles are something to get excited about. Plus, we’ll have a few fantastic puzzles for you to have a go at – which might be good news if you’ve already worked your way through all the puzzles in Giggle in the Middle!

Puzzle 1 – Crack the Cryptogram

Do you understand any of the line above? It’s not just a string of random emojis – it’s a secret message, also known as a cryptogram! Discover what the secret message says by using the code below.

Brilliant Benefits

Solving that puzzle might have needed you to think a bit like a detective, and to put your mind to good use. That’s one of the benefits of puzzles – they’re great at challenging us to work hard, and to come up with creative solutions to problems.

If someone regularly does puzzles, then this can help their memory to improve and it can also help with their vocabulary and maths skills. Plus, it can be ridiculously good fun to solve puzzles with friends or family. So puzzles are definitely worth celebrating!

Puzzle 2 – Solve the Riddles

A riddle is a tricky challenge in which you have to figure out the meaning of a strange statement. Can you solve these tricky riddles, and then find out what links all of the answers?

1. I’m made of sand, and I’m a royal home. You can build me near waves, but I’ll collapse if I’m too close. What am I?

2. I’m an animal that wears my house as a backpack. I’m not very fast, and I’m known to be slack. What am I?

3. I live in the sky, but sprinkle to the ground. I’m chilly and white and make no sound. What am I?
