There is a whole new world to discover in the Mexican Caribbean, Catherine Gordon reveals the best of the Maya culture, nature reserves, cenotes and islands just waiting to be explored

WITH SO MUCH MORE to it than endless sandy beaches, the Mexican Caribbean is one of the few places in the world where you’ll find a massive array of places to go and things to do during your vacation. Why? The sheer variety, from ancient Maya culture, nature reserves, and tropical islands to coral reefs and adventure parks, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

A good place to start is by exploring one of the many archaeological sites dotted around the area, where you will learn more about the ancient Maya, the indigenous people who inhabited this part of Mexico before the Spanish Conquest. Every site is unique, my favorites include Tulum, for its stunning location on cliffs overlooking the sea, Muyil, which has an off-the-beatentrack jungle feel, and Cobá, because you can cycle through its shady paths and climb the 138-foot-high pyramid. Further afield, there is Ek’ Balam, which teams up nicely with a day out to the nearby colonial city of Valladolid, and Uxmal near Mérida, the second most spectacular site in the region after the unmissable Chichén Itzá. Or easily accessible in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, look out for El Rey and also the small ruins in the gardens of the Museo Maya.
One priority during any visit to the Mexican Caribbean is spending as much time as possible splashing around in the ocean. But what lies beneath? The second-largest coral reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Reef is an underwater delight filled with turtles, lobster, octopus, moray eels and a myriad of colorful tropical fish and corals. Don a mask, snorkel and fins to plunge off a boat and gaze down on this submerged paradise or even better, learn how to scuba dive. Doing a scuba diving course during your vacation is not only a memorable adventure, but you gain a skill you can use on future visits. I learned how to scuba while on vacation in the Riviera Maya and the deep dives down to ship wrecks where I saw huge spotted eagle rays gliding past were an unforgettable sight.

Un buen lugar para comenzar es explorando uno de los muchos sitios arqueológicos de la zona, donde usted aprenderá más de los antiguos mayas que habitaron esta parte de México antes de la Conquista. Cada sitio es único, mis lugares favoritos son Tulum, por su imponente ubicación sobre acantilados frente al mar, Muyil, que tiene una sensación de selva fuera de lo común, y Cobá, ya que puede deambular por sus sombreados senderos y subir la pirámide de 42 metros de altura. Un poco más lejos se encuentra Ek’ Balam, que combina muy bien con un día en la cercana ciudad de Valladolid, y Uxmal, cerca de Mérida, el segundo sitio más espectacular en la región después de la impresionante Chichén Itzá. Póngase un visor, esnórquel y aletas y arrójese de una lancha y admire este paraíso sumergido o, aún mejor, aprenda a bucear. Tomar un curso de buceo durante sus vacaciones no sólo es una aventura inolvidable, sino también adquiere una habilidad que puede usar en visitas futuras. Yo aprendí a bucear estando de vacaciones en la Riviera Maya y las inmersiones profundas hasta los naufragios donde vi enormes rayas águila deslizándose por enfrente fueron una vista inolvidable.
Una cosa que no falta en esta parte del mundo son los parques de aventura. Y hay uno para cada quien, desde familias con niños pequeños hasta los jóvenes más intrépidos y los adultos. Nuestros niños realmente disfrutaron Xcaret, con sus acuarios, un aviario, un mariposario, playas, ríos subterráneos, excelente cocina mexicana y un popular espectáculo nocturno con 300 artistas interpretando danzas y música mexicanas. Los amantes del agua deben ir a Xel-Há, donde puede hacer esnórquel, flotar río abajo en llantas infladas, aventurarse en cuevas subacuáticas, saltar de un acantilado, tirolesa o descender en tobogán desde un faro de 40 metros de alto. One thing that isn’t lacking in this part of the world is adventure parks. And there is one for everyone, from families with young children to more intrepid teens and adults. Our young children really enjoyed Xcaret, which has aquariums, an aviary, a butterfly pavilion, beaches, underground rivers, great Mexican cuisine and a popular night show with 300 artists performing traditional dance and music. Water lovers should head to Xel-Há, where you can snorkel, float down rivers on inner tubes, venture into underwater caves, cliff jump, zip line or try the 40-meter-high lighthouse waterslide. For the more adventurous traveler, there are the super-high jungle zip lines and off-road amphibious vehicles to whizz around on at Xplor. For massive water slides and wave pools, cool off at Ventura Park or for an evening fiesta, sip tequila on a floating gondola at Xoximilco with live mariachi music.
A vacation in Mexico is the perfect opportunity to get back in touch with nature by visiting a biosphere reserve. Get away from the crowds and spend the day surrounded by lush jungles and exotic wildlife. With so many to choose from I’ve narrowed them down to my top three. First, Ría Lagartos on the Yucatán coast, which apart from 149,123 acres of mangroves, salt marshes and jungle, is home to Mexico’s largest colony of flamingos. Second, the deserted island of Isla Contoy, a two-hour boat ride from Cancun, it is home to thousands of frigate birds and double-breasted cormorants. And third, is the showstopping, 1.3 million-acre Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, south of Tulum, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean. Get lost in the jungles, mangroves and crystalline waters,

float down canals used by the Maya more than 1,000 years ago and try snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding or fly fishing. You will be able to spot the spider monkeys, crocodiles and some of the nearly 350 species of birds that call this natural wonder home.
Not to be missed on your travels is a cooling dip in one of the cenotes to be found in the Yucatán Peninsula. Cenotes are natural fresh water sinkholes in the limestone rock of the area and were sacred to the ancient Maya. Located deep in the jungle, each cenote is unlike the next, from easy-to-access open cenotes, which are family-friendly natural swimming pools to more intricate underground cenotes, which can be explored to see the giant stalactites and stalagmites which form over time.
My first ever visit to a cenote was to scuba dive in Dos Ojos, where you can also swim and snorkel. The sunlight pierces through the jungle and cave openings here to illuminate the crystal-clear waters below. To further explore cenotes with an expert guide, I visited Río Secreto, where, equipped with a hard hat and flashlight, I hiked and swam through a thrilling one-kilometer route of underground caves. For a family-friendly cenote experience check in at Aktun Chen, which has zip lines, an underground river and a small zoo with moneys and parrots.
But don’t just stick to the mainland on your vacation, go island hopping to Holbox, Isla Mujeres or Cozumel, the quiet and laid-back Mexican Caribbean islands which have an authentic local community feel to them. Isla Mujeres is just a 15-minute ferry ride from Cancun and has been my home for over 10 years. Perfect for a day out, hire a golf cart to tour this small island and visit the beach clubs, turtle farm and rocky cliff walk on the

Apártese de las multitudes y pase el día rodeado de exuberante selva y exótica vida silvestre. Con tantas opciones por elegir, los he reducido a mis mejores tres. Primero, Ría Lagartos, en la costa de Yucatán, que aparte de sus 60,348 hectáreas de manglares, marismas y selva, es el hábitat de la colonia de flamencos más grande de México. Segundo, la isla desierta de Contoy, un paseo en lancha de dos horas desde Cancún, es el hogar de miles de pájaros fragata y cormoranes. Y tercero, está la espectacular Reserva de la Biósfera de Sian Ka’an, de 528,148 hectáreas, al sur de Tulum, declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO y el área protegida más grande del Caribe mexicano. Piérdase en las selvas, manglares y aguas cristalinas, flote por los canales utilizados por los mayas hace más de 1,000 años y pruebe el esnórquel, kayak, paddle boarding y pesca de mosca. Usted podrá observar monos araña, cocodrilos y algunas de las cerca de 350 especies de aves que habitan esta maravilla natural.

southern headland. The larger and busier island of Cozumel is a 45-minute ferry dash from Playa del Carmen. Known for its deep-wall scuba diving, it has a spectacular carnival every February, the Chankanaab national park and surfing on its rugged east shore. Off the beaten track due to its twohour drive north of Cancun, the island of Holbox is a 30-minute ferry hop from Chiquila and still retains its sandy streets and a barefoot, rustic vibe, with deliciously-fresh seafood and hammocks hung over the water on its pristine beaches. There are also plenty of opportunities to discover the living culture of the Mexican Caribbean. By experiencing a Maya village tour, you will have an opportunity to meet local families and witness their traditional way of life. Or learn how to create Mexican cuisine, with its tamales, salsas and empanadas, on a cooking course. Polish your basic Spanish skills at a language class, listen to live music or watch traditional folk dances. Or why not experience a Maya shaman ceremony inside a temazcal sweat lodge heated by hot stones. Dive into everything that the Riviera Maya has to offer, it is a world of wonders just waiting to be explored.

Lo que no debe perderse en sus viajes es un refrescante chapuzón en uno de los cenotes que se encuentran en la península de Yucatán. Los cenotes son pozos naturales de agua dulce que se forman en la roca caliza de la zona y que eran sagrados para los antiguos mayas. Localizados en lo profundo de la selva, cada cenote es diferente, desde los abiertos y de fácil acceso, que son como albercas naturales aptas para toda la familia hasta los cenotes subterráneos más intricados, los cuales pueden ser explorados para ver las estalactitas y estalagmitas gigantes que se forman a lo largo del tiempo.
Mi primera visita a un cenote fue para bucear en Dos Ojos, donde también se puede nadar y hacer esnórquel. La luz del sol penetra la selva y las aperturas en las bovedas de las cuevas para iluminar las aguas cristalinas de abajo. Para explorar más los cenotes con un guía experto, visité Río Secreto, donde, equipado con un casco y linterna, caminé y nadé a través de una emocionante ruta de un kilómetro de cuevas subterráneas. Para una experiencia en un cenote familiar visite Aktún Chen, que tiene tirolesas, un río subterráneo y un pequeño zoológico con monos y pericos.
En sus vacaciones, no sólo se quede en el continente, visite las islas de Holbox, Isla Mujeres o Cozumel, las tranquilas y relajadas islas del Caribe mexicano con una auténtica sensación de comunidad local. Isla Mujeres está a sólo 15 minutos en transbordador desde Cancún y ha sido mi hogar desde hace 10 años. Perfecto para un día afuera, rente un carrito de golf para pasear está pequeña isla y visitar los clubes de playa, la granja de tortugas y caminar por los acantilados rocosos en la punta sur de la isla. La isla de Cozumel, más grande y bulliciosa, está a 45 minutos en transbordador desde Playa del Carmen. Conocida por su buceo de pared profunda, tiene un carnaval espectacular cada mes de febrero, el parque nacional Chankanaab y se puede hacer surf en la escarpada costa oriental. Fuera del camino habitual, por sus dos horas de camino en auto al norte de Cancún, la isla de Holbox está a 10 minutos en un paseo en ferry desde Chiquilá y aún conserva sus calles de arena y un ambiente rústico, con mariscos frescos deliciosos y hamacas colgadas sobre el agua en sus playas vírgenes.
También abundan las oportunidades para descubrir la cultura viva del Caribe mexicano. Al realizar un tour por un pueblo maya, usted tendrá la oportunidad de conocer familias locales y ser testigo de su forma de vida tradicional. O aprender cómo preparar comida de esta región con sus tamales, salsas y empanadas. Afine sus conocimientos del español y hasta maya en una clase de idioma, escuche música viva o disfrute de las danzas folclóricas tradicionales. O por qué no vivir la experiencia de una ceremonia con un chamán maya dentro de un temazcal. Pruebe todo lo que ofrece la Riviera Maya, es un mundo de maravillas esperando ser exploradas.
