Joy Wang and Samantha Arscott (collectively known as JAM)
2024 has been a year JAM-packed with highlights, not just for the Year 12s, but the entire Korowa community.
Looking back at our photos, it’s amazing to see how the activities and events have empowered us as a community, helping us thrive beyond academics.
As School Captains, our goal at the start of the year was to encourage every Korowa student to work together and embrace new challenges. We aimed to create a community where everyone felt comfortable trying something new.
This year, we expanded Celebration Week, a week that celebrates the diversity within our school. We organised activities that celebrated different cultures, sexualities, genders and abilities—not just during that week, but throughout the year on International Women’s Day, Harmony Day, IDAHOBIT Day, Reconciliation Week, R U OK Day? and Wear it Purple Day.
We’re incredibly proud of how everyone engaged in these activities, whether it was blindfolding themselves in Goalball, trying a new sport or wearing a ribbon for Harmony Day. It was so rewarding to witness these events, and we’re so grateful for the chance to lead these activities.
This year marked the inaugural Student Leadership Conference which was hosted at Korowa. We organised this event to create a platform to unite student leaders from various other schools, allowing us to share our collective thoughts on the definition of leadership. It was tr uly inspiring to hear the views of other leaders, and we learnt so much about what leadership means in a school community.
We are so, so grateful to be able to celebrate this year with an incredible leadership team by our side and the backing of the Korowa family. You have taught us that being a leader is not about the badges or the role itself, but the differences and impacts it makes on the community.

Emily Gardiner and Chloe Corcoran (Palm Leaf Captains, Class of 2024), Natalie Elliot, Lead Librarian and Archivist, Jane Grlj, Director of Marketing and Communications and Phoebe Maher, Graphic Design Communications Officer
Our chosen theme this year was ‘curiosity’, which fittingly, is also our school’s newly introduced value.
We recognised that curiosity represents more than just an interest in learning; it embodies a journey of exploration and growth.
As curiosity begins from a young age, we wanted to illustrate this by proudly featuring the Junior School’s artwork on the front cover, demonstrating how students learn, question and grow through their innate sense of wonder.
Tabitha Cleven,
5 led by Mary Macdonald, Junior
Throughout this jam-packed year, we were able to host the annual Book Week; this year, we followed the theme ‘Reading is Magic’. This mystical week brought students together from all year levels to celebrate the enchantment of books. Students could participate in numerous activities throughout the week, ranging from challenging breakout activities to cookie decorating to a whimsically-themed book trivia, inviting both students and teachers to showcase their literary knowledge.
The Palm Leaf serves as a cherished keepsake, capturing the wide range of activities, achievements and friendships formed. This year we are honoured to showcase the memories and moments that were made and have shaped our community.

Frances Booth
2024 has been another truly memorable year for Korowa. We have learnt, played, danced, sung, debated, fallen down, run, jumped, failed, grown, and celebrated together as a community.
Our Palm Leaf cover this year is a collage of Junior School artwork that epitomises our community. It is literally a village, like Korowa, of many different types of houses and buildings, as we are many different types of people. And yet together we are a beautiful community that is harmonious and bound together by our shared values and love for the School.
We started this year by introducing our Strategic Direction for 2024 and Beyond. In this, we set out our north star, the aim we have for every one of our students to be confident, authentic and strong. We want our students to go out into their world and make a difference through their integrity, curiosity and courage. And I know that they will make a difference and will help make the world a better and kinder place in the years to come.
We have also had a major set of celebrations that mark some of our most notable traditions: Trek and the Exchange program. Trek turned 30 years old this year. It is still one of the most robust outdoor education experiences available in girls’ schools, and is now joined by the equally invigorating Quest program. To see Trek ‘graduates’ from 1994 come back and share their stories with us was very inspiring.
We also celebrated the silver jubilee of our German Exchange program, with Dianne Tamburro (Pearce, Class of 1974) coming back to the School to share memories with students from her years as Head of Languages at Korowa.

One of our most moving events, however, was the evening we spent celebrating the 40 Korovians who have received Australian Honours. The breadth and depth of their achievements across myriad fields is remarkable. As Ian Robertson, our esteemed Alumni Manager, noted, there was a distinct theme to their achievements: they were all a form of service to their community and their country. This sense of service is in Korowa’s DNA and continues through to today. The most emotional part of the evening was when the assembled Honorees, while being photographed together, broke spontaneously into the School Hymn. There weren’t many dry eyes by the time they had finished.

Korowa continues to shine across so many areas. Our Music School performance space was renovated, the Korowa Rowing Club donated three new boats to the program, there was the Newsies JR. production, a magnificent Gala Concert and both Junior School and Senior School Art Exhibitions that showcased remarkable talents.
Through all of this, lessons continued, students learnt and teachers taught. At the heart of Korowa are our relationships, and these continue to flourish with every year. With this edition of the Palm Leaf, we farewell our Year 12 students and the cycle will begin again with a new Year 7 cohort next year. Like the Korowa village on the cover, we continue to grow as new houses and buildings are built, like the new students and their families joining the Korowa family, all of whom add to the diversity and beauty of our community.
I very much hope you enjoy this edition of our school yearbook as we look forward to celebrating our 135th anniversary in 2025.

Catherine Robson
As Chair of the Council, I am thrilled to share an excerpt from my speech delivered at the Year 10-12 Speech Night. It is a privilege to have my words become a part of Korowa’s history, captured within the pages of this year’s Palm Leaf magazine.
It is a great pleasure to join you to celebrate a successful year and recognise all that we have achieved as a school. I have been struck by the number of Korovians genuinely playing on the world stage.
During the year, our 2024 School Captain Samantha Arscott represented Australia in cricket, Alice Liberman represented Australia in debating, Christina Chen earned her spot on Australia’s first-ever team for the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics, Tessa Plant, Elizabeth Robson, Annabel Wu and Elaine Shen represented Australia in the F1 in Schools World Championships, being the highest ranked majority girls’ team in the world and finishing 8th overall. It was thrilling to see alumni Jenna Strauch OLY (Class of 2015) win a silver medal at the Paris Olympics and celebrate the 40 remarkable Korovians who have been recognised with Australian Honours.
For a consciously and proudly small school tucked away in Glen Iris, it feels that we punch well above our weight. It has given me pause to consider why it is that we outperform in so many different domains.
Is it because we have talented, committed teachers and coaches who love what they do and believe passionately in nurturing potential? Most certainly.

Is it because our students are supported by parents who value education and believe that girls can do anything? Absolutely.
Is it because each student is surrounded by peers who are invariably pushing themselves to be THEIR best? Undoubtedly.
But what underwrites our capacity to outperform is our values. You only really know and understand your values when they are tested. Because for each win we celebrate this evening, there have been many more failures. While we rightly applaud both individual and collective achievement at the very highest level tonight, we also celebrate every one of you who has tried your hardest and not won. Every one who has been vulnerable enough to show that you really care, knowing that you might feel embarrassed if you don’t succeed. What we applaud is your decision to try again, to get up and keep going. Your denial of the very human instinct to blame the system, argue with the umpire, to wallow in the unfairness that your efforts were not rewarded. It takes courage, real courage to try again.
Courage can seem grand and abstract, but courage lives in all the tiny choices we make every day. Know that we see your courage and that we could not be more proud.

Courage is one of Korowa’s core values because it is essential in dealing with challenges. As my mother is fond of saying, ‘you can’t control what life throws at you, but you can choose how you respond.’ The courage to see challenges, painful as they can be, as an opportunity for growth is what makes us strong.
Horticulturalists know that you cannot grow a mature tree in a greenhouse. Without the wind pushing, pulling and tossing saplings around as they grow, they fail to embed strong, entrenched roots and topple over under their own weight when fully grown. Just like the wind shapes the mightiest trees, so it is that challenges make us strong. The reality is that we need to be strong and ready to face challenges because the world remains an uncertain place. The courage that you have shown over the course of this year has equipped you to be the leaders of tomorrow and to not only face, but to find creative solutions to these challenges - this fills me with hope.
In a year of achievement, perhaps my biggest achievement was securing tickets to the Taylor Swift Eras concert. I was astounded by Swift’s sheer physical strength and stamina. The energy which passed from her to the crowd and back again was electric.
But possibly the highlight was navigating our way through the crush of 100,000 bewildered and clearly infrequent visitors to the MCG making their way from the concert. I have never been so close to so many happy, fulfilled people who genuinely wanted the best for each other. There was a palpable feeling of belonging and acceptance.
It would obviously be naïve to hope that the world could always be like a once in a lifetime, and frankly very expensive concert experience, but there is so much for us to learn about the strength of groups who are open, accepting and able to harmoniously navigate shared problems together.
In a year where aggressive self-interest has been so disproportionately rewarded, I have sometimes worried that we at Korowa might be a bit too nice. I have periodically wondered if we need to have a harder edge, to exhibit a bit more ruthless singularity.
But when I reflect on all the achievements at the very highest levels at Korowa this year, I know that we will continue to enjoy outsized success not in spite of our values, but because of them. Our students will earn the right to be leaders and have the skills required to solve the world’s most intractable problems, by embracing the strength of our community and the confidence to be true to who we really are.

Jennifer Bailey Smith
“It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.” David Attenborough
And here, we find ourselves amidst the vibrant and thriving ecosystem that is Korowa. Much like the natural world, this school is a dynamic, organic entity, teeming with a diverse array of life forms. At the very core of this ecosystem lies growth, with learning serving as the driving force behind this development, while experiences, both inside and beyond the classroom, act as the vehicle that propels it forward.
For the very first time, I have had the privilege of observing a full year in the lifecycle of Korowa.
As the new year begins, the school awakens with energy, as the eldest of the students step forward, lighting candles to illuminate the path for those who are to follow.
These candles cast a warm glow, brightening the way for the younger students, who watch on with eager anticipation, knowing that one day, they, too, will carry the flame.
Throughout the year, the fledglings do not remain stationary in their school, but instead venture boldly into the world beyond. With curiosity and determination, they return bearing treasures — knowledge and experiences that will inspire and enrich the younger members of the community.
Meanwhile, those who have remained within the school walls continue to nurture the hive of activity, organising and orchestrating events

and spectacles that bind the community together. These endeavours foster a sense of purpose, sustaining the collective pride that holds the ecosystem strong.
As the year draws to a close, the time comes for the older students to spread their wings, leaving the nest in search of new horizons. They again celebrate with candles, this time carrying their light out into the wider world, leaving behind a new generation of fledglings to continue the cycle.
I look forward to witnessing the repetition of this natural rhythm in the coming year, where once again, we will see more learning, more joy, and more growth for all who call this thriving community home.
Thank you, Korowa, for a wonderful first year!

Kirsten Winkett

One of the greatest joys of my role as Chaplain is the curiosity shown by the students. The varied and vast ‘why’ questions that I get asked cause me to stop and think about my own answers and thinking around faith and spirituality.

The students ‘why’ questions are a great way to better understand our differences and similarities. It was with those ‘why’ questions in mind that Chapel in Term 1 started with an installation of the Garden of Gethsemane in the Chapel itself. We explored the early part of the Easter story, where Jesus is in the garden of Gethsemane, asking hard ‘why’ questions of God. As part of our Chapel reflections, students from Prep to Year 12 were encouraged to write on paper shaped as leaves, their ‘why’ questions to God and then attach them to the vines in our Gethsemane Garden, symbolic of giving them to God.

While often it feels like our ‘why’ questions are not answered it is always good to reflect deeply on what we are most curious about and give them to God in the expectation that one day we may have that curiosity met. Along with exploring our ‘whys’ we have continued to explore as a community through Chapel and formal services how we are loved by God, creator of the universe, how we are of equal value and worth to God, and how we can endeavour to meet the challenge set out for all people in the Book of Micah -
‘He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.’ Micah 6:8

As we close another remarkable year at Korowa, it is with immense pride and admiration that we reflect on the extraordinary accomplishments and unwavering enthusiasm of our Senior School students.
2024 has been a testament to the depth of talent and the diverse interests that flourish within our community, and it is impossible not to be inspired by the collective efforts of our students, staff and broader community.
Our students have embodied our core values of courage, curiosity and integrity in all their endeavours. They have continued to excel across various disciplines, highlighting their dedication and passion. Our Sport, Music, Performing Arts and Debating programs have thrived, with ongoing success underscoring the hard work and talent of our students and the support of our staff.
Korowa Sport has seen our teams demonstrate tremendous skill and determination, achieving team success and personal bests that reflect our students’ commitment to excellence and teamwork. Our Music program has continued to shine, with students achieving outstanding results in competitions and performances, highlighting their talents. Performing Arts has continued to flourish, with students delivering captivating performances, whether drama productions or showcases; our students have demonstrated their creativity and dedication, bringing stories to life on stage.
Our debating teams have continued to impress, winning accolades and displaying their ability to think critically and articulate their arguments with confidence and poise.

Their success is a testament to their hard work and the ongoing support of their coaches and peers.
A standout highlight of this year has been the remarkable success of the F1 in Schools teams. Their innovation, teamwork, and dedication have truly embodied the values of curiosity and courage, setting a high standard as they break new ground and pave the way for this exciting new program at Korowa.
This year’s Big Day In annual fundraiser was a highlight and an example of our community spirit and service mindset. Led by our House Captains and supported by the entire Senior School student cohort, it was a tremendous effort highlighting our commitment to making a positive impact, continuing our long history of support of Fred Hyde Schools.
As we reflect on 2024, we celebrate another successful year in our long and proud history and eagerly look forward to marking our 135th year. Having recently moved on from Korowa to pursue a new career path, I want to extend my warmest wishes to all of you for the future. Korowa truly is a special place, and I am grateful to remain connected to this wonderful community—not as a staff member, but now as a Korovian.

We were thrilled to welcome everyone back to a new school year, filled with energy, excitement and a genuine joy for learning.
This year started with activities across all year levels, from the Early Learning Centre (ELC) to Year 6, fostering an environment of engagement, collaboration and support.
A highlight was the arrival of the Year 6 hoodies, featuring each student’s name and a unique design chosen by the class. This hoodie symbolises unity and the memorable journey for these students in their final Junior School year.
Year 5 camp at Camp Jungai was another Term 1 milestone, promoting bonding, collaboration and friendship in a new setting. This camp encourages social skills, physical activity, environmental awareness, and resilience, building crucial life skills.
Junior School leadership development also shone through as our Captains, Annabelle and Emily, presented confidently at the Biennial IPSHA conference. The role of positive parental support, particularly during leadership challenges, cannot be overstated; resilience and open communication are essential in nurturing these young leaders.
Encouragement, a central theme this year, was inspired by Reverend Winkett’s message. We explored how encouragement, whether through kind words or attentive listening, builds confidence. This value is foundational to our Junior School culture, motivating students to take on challenges.

The House Cross Country event saw Prep to Year 6 students showcase incredible House spirit. Events like House Athletics, House Swimming, House Spirit Day, Jump Rope for Heart, and International Women’s ‘Sparkle’ Day brought our community together.
The Year 6 Canberra Capital Tour deepened students’ understanding of civics and citizenship, while excursions like visits to Werribee Zoo and the Immigration Museum enriched their learning experiences.
Heartwarming Mother’s and Father’s Day celebrations were highlights, as well as the re-establishment of the Friends of Junior School group, organising community events like the Twilight Movie Night.
The nativity and carols Christmas services provided a wonderful and festive way to end the year. The Year 6 Graduation was a heartfelt celebration of our Year 6 students’ achievements and their journey through Junior School.
I extend my thanks to the School Executive and the Junior School Leadership Team for their ongoing support, as well as to the students, staff and parents who contribute to making our Junior School a positive and encouraging environment for all.

Annabelle Louie and Emily Olding
As the Junior School Captains, we have been privileged to have had lots of opportunities to contribute to the School. Whether it was helping the Social Service team with fundraisers or speaking at assemblies, we demonstrated our commitment to leadership, fulfilling the leadership pledge we read at the start of our Year 6 journey.
‘Great leaders don’t set out to be a leader… they set out to make a difference. It’s never about the role – always about the goal.’ (Unknown)
We both thought about this quote every now and again, as we pursued what we were determined to achieve. Our goals for 2024 were to create a more positive and inclusive environment and ensure that everyone felt they had a voice.
A highlight of the year was taking part in the IPSHA (Independent Primary School Heads of Australia) Conference, which was a very special occasion, as we were the first Korowa students to present as part of it.
To start, we sent out a survey to Year 5 and Year 6 students relating to our school community. With the information we collated, we created

a presentation based on what we could do to improve the School environment. The most popular idea from the survey was to implement a kindness jar, which was filled with kind messages about other students in our class.
Throughout the year, we met with Miss Barker and the SRC Captains every fortnight to discuss the School community and environment. We worked towards introducing some of the suggestions from students such as creating a packing-up time.
Overall, this year has had a fantastic outcome, and our goals were accomplished. We worked together to further create a more inclusive environment, and ensured the students had the best year possible!

We ran, we swam, we chanted as loud as we could. This year Akey has had a phenomenal year, building connections, growing House spirit, and most importantly having fun. We have faced many challenges and achieved many goals throughout the year. We hope we have made a significant impact in Akey, and we wish that the Akey spirit continues to grow. Go Akey!
Emma Lo and Amyra Sandhu, Akehurst

We were absolutely thrilled with the incredible opportunity to be the Jamie House Captains for 2024. It has been such an honour to host House events and run House meetings with the support of the girls. Throughout House cross country and House swimming we witnessed many friendships develop, we loved getting to know more people in Jamie and leading our House to victory! We wish the best of luck to the future House Captains. Go Jamie!
Sara Nagpal and Allegra Lodding, Jamieson

Becoming Clarke’s 2024 House Captains has been a wonderfully rewarding experience, allowing us to lead by example, motivate our House, and foster a sense of teamwork. We’ve felt privileged to see friendships grow, and girls step out of their comfort zone. House Cross Country, House Athletics and House Swimming have been a blast with many wins along the way. Overall, this role not only helped us grow as leaders but develop a strong appreciation of our collaborative spirits that lead Clarke to victory!
Grace Groom and Abby Williams, Clarke

2024 has been a massive year with a bucket-load of House spirit! It has been a pleasure to contribute to all House activities and support our team. We have seen so much encouragement and confidence from Wilkinson and were thrilled with the excitement from all Wilky members at each House event! It has been a privilege to be House Captains for 2024. We enjoyed every second of it!
Eva Sinclair and Shishi Du, Wilkinson

Being this year’s Music Captains was a great treat and experience. In addition to all the assemblies and Junior School events throughout the year, we were honoured to introduce and perform at the annual Gala Music Concert and we have deeply enjoyed these experiences, performances and speeches in front of our parents and guests. We love contributing to all music ensembles and helping Miss Pilcher around the School. These memories we will never ever forget.
Alyssa Hau and Annie Huang, Music
This year as your Art Captains, we wanted to plan something new; an art competition for everyone who wished there was one. Semester 2 has been quite busy, with the Art Competition, Junior School Art Show and everyone’s favourite, Art Club. One of our biggest pleasures was helping students, including finding items, giving them tips and finishing off unfinished masterpieces. Thank you for your support and we wish you the best in your art journeys.
Leah Li and Sophia Nachmias, Art
As Environment Captains, we have had so much fun working with the Junior School, to make our environment a healthier place. This year we introduced the container deposit scheme to Korowa. We also added a compost bin to the Junior School playground to make our playground a cleaner and greener place. The children have also enjoyed attending clubs and learning all about how to keep our school green, using our mascot Damien the duck.

As Library Captains this year, we’ve had the privilege of organising many events such as the 100-word story competition, bookmark competitions and Book Week. It was an amazing experience working with the Library Committee and staff to create some wonderful events! Book Week was definitely a highlight, we were able to run an assembly, and we all loved dressing up! We hope next year’s Library Captains love it as much as we did!
Clementine Allen and Aanya Dixit, Library

Serving as the Sport Captains was an amazing opportunity. We got the chance to host and help out with different events such as House Spirit Day, Mini Olympics, Jump rope for Heart and House events. One of our highlights was watching everyone being involved and supporting each other. We hope the 2025 Sport Captains and team have a great year!
Pippa Lee and Hongsong Chen, Sport
It has been an honour to be STEAM Captains for 2024. This role has allowed us to develop our teamwork and leadership skills. We enjoyed hosting and leading activities for the STEAM Club, encouraging students to participate and working with the younger students. Our favourite activity was making the exploding volcanoes! We wish the 2025 STEAM Captains all the best.
Audrey Karawdeniya and Rita Liao, STEAM
This year, as the International Captains, it has been a huge honour. We have contributed to many exciting things like German Day where the theme for this year was Frühlingsfest, meaning spring festival and also Harmony Day and the Mini Olympics for the ELC to Year 2. Throughout this experience we have created such great memories and cannot wait to see the future International Captains and committee fulfil the role in 2025.
Leahna Rajapaksa and Hayley Tian, International
As the Social Service Captains, 2024 has been an amazing year and we are so thankful for our mentor, Miss Hatton, and the support she has given us. Throughout the year, we had many opportunities to speak at assemblies and chapels and help raise awareness for many causes including Harmony Day, Save the Children, International Women’s Day and the Sport Access Foundation. It taught us a lot about the responsibility of organising the in-class activities and making sure we meet deadlines. One of the highlights was organising the bake sale, speaking about our idol at the International Women’s Day assembly and meeting with Miss Barker to discuss our cause ideas. Overall, being the Social Service Captains was a privilege and we wish the best of luck to the 2025 Captains. The Preps have had a year filled with a variety of different and wonderful experiences as they commenced their journey at school.
Perhaps the biggest highlight, as it is every year is the celebration of their first 100 days at school. There was great anticipation as they counted each day until they had been at school for 100 days. We had a special day filled with a variety of activities from biscuit decorating, morning tea with their Year 12 buddies and a party to celebrate. It is a day filled with fun and connections as we recognised how much our students have achieved these 100 days.
Other highlights included competing in their first cross country, celebrating Book Week, yoga and photography incursions, the Werribee Zoo excursion, German Day and creating animals.
Prep 2024 is a wonderful group who I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching, and I cannot wait to continue to watch them grow on their school journey. Together they have created many special memories of their first year at school together.

Danielle O’Kane, Year 1 Teacher
What an exciting and unforgettable year it has been for Year 1! From thrilling carnivals to vibrant School celebrations, the girls have embraced every opportunity to learn and grow.
One of the highlights was our trip to Melbourne Zoo, where the children explored different animals and their habitats, sparking curiosity and awe. This hands-on experience brought their classroom lessons to life as they observed creatures up close and learned about the world around them.
In history, we journeyed back in time to discover the toys children played with in the past. The students were fascinated by the simplicity and creativity of traditional toys, leading to many fun conversations about how play has evolved.
Throughout the year, we also observed the changing seasons and the weather, noticing how nature transforms. These observations inspired important questions about how we can better care for the environment and the places we cherish.
Beyond academics, Year 1 has been a year of personal growth. The girls have grown taller, lost their first teeth and formed lasting friendships. Their laughter, curiosity, and joy have made each day special.
As the year comes to an end, we reflect on all the memories made and the lessons learned. Year 1 has truly been a year to remember.

Kate Banks, Curriculum Coordinator (Years 3-6) and Year 2 Teacher
Year 2 has had an incredible year filled with learning and friendship.
Our Year 2 students are curious and dedicated learners, and it’s been a joy to see their confidence and independence flourish throughout the year.
The class participated in a variety of hands-on learning experiences, including scientific experiments where they investigated sound energy and material changes. Some highlights included making slime and our excursion to Scienceworks in Term 3, which enhanced our understanding of the solar system. Another memorable event was the incursion with Startime Studios, where the students learned to create a stop-motion video.
Year 2 has also developed their confidence and leadership skills by participating in shared events with ELC to Year 2, such as the Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Book Week reading sessions and leading the Early Years Assembly.
We wrapped up the year with a busy and exciting Term 4. The students enjoyed stretching and relaxing during our yoga incursion, explored the great outdoors at the Year 2 day camp in Toolangi and played a key role in the Early Years Nativity play. What a fun-filled and memorable year 2024 has been!

We really enjoyed the slime experiment in Science. Even though not all of our slime recipes worked, it was a very fun experiment!

Kim Harris and Abbey Pont, Year 3 Teachers
They
say time flies when you are having fun, and it feels like we only just started Year 3!
In Term 1, we voted for new Class Captains, welcomed new friends and for the first time we were also able to become an SRC Captain. In March, we participated in NAPLAN testing and all felt proud of our efforts.
Music is a big part of our life in Year 3, and we learn to play either the violin, viola or cello as part of the Instrumental Strings program. Many also have private lessons to learn another instrument, either at school or after school, and some students played in the Donald Redding Strings Orchestra.
Throughout the year we have enjoyed special events such as our KXP Showcase, ‘Connection to Country through Nature’. We have had incursions and excursions and visited CERES Environmental Park and the NGV Ian Potter Gallery. We have also taken great care of our kitchen garden, learnt a lot about growing vegetables and enjoyed cooking with the produce.
The most exciting event of 2024 was our very first overnight experience to Camp Manyung in Mt Eliza. We had so much fun, the activities were challenging but awesome, and the food was delicious! At the end of Term 3, we farewelled Ms Harris and welcomed Ms Pont. We have had a wonderful year of learning and friendship in 2024 and now we are looking forward to new adventures in Year 4.

I have really enjoyed Maths in Year 3. I especially love Maths games and learning about fractions.
Audrey
I had a blast at Camp Manyung. The tree rolling course was great and I needed to concentrate and be brave.

I found it interesting to learn about graphs, digraphs and syllables and I think my spelling has improved.
Inaaya
I have enjoyed learning how to join my letters in handwriting. It can be quite difficult but the more you practise the better you get.
Stella Hewitt
The marine discovery activity at camp was amazing. We went in the late afternoon to Sunnyside Beach and searched for crabs and seaglass. The sun made the water sparkle.
Chelsey
My favourite thing about Camp Manyung was facing my fears and trying my best.
Rosemary
I enjoyed taking part in SSV Diving and Swimming. I had to be confident and brave, and I really enjoyed representing Korowa.

Our Year 4 cohort are a curious, connected and creative group. Their boundless curiosity drives their learning, while their collaborative spirit and creativity make every project and experience come alive.
This year, we have had exciting and enriching experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Through our Kitchen Garden program, the girls rolled up their sleeves to plant and harvest fresh produce like zucchini, broccoli, lettuce and snow peas. These ingredients were used to create delicious dishes such as zucchini slice and spanakopita.
The CERES excursion offered a unique opportunity to connect with First Nations culture and deepen our understanding of Indigenous knowledge. We were introduced to bush foods and medicines, as well as Indigenous perspectives on caring for Country.
Our visit to the NGV Ian Potter Gallery was a visual and cultural feast. Students explored the works of renowned First Nations artists, gaining insight into the deep connection between art and Country. During the hands-on art workshop, they created their own masterpieces, drawing inspiration from both modern and traditional Indigenous artworks.
Book Week was a hit, with the visit from author Alex Miles sparking creativity and a love of storytelling in our young authors.
This year has been a whirlwind of learning, fun and unforgettable experiences. Year 4 students have grown in knowledge and creativity, ready for even more adventures in the future!

I really enjoyed it when we had Pyjama Day. It was extremely funny to see everyone wearing their PJs to school.
Flora Du
Crazy Nail Day was a lot of fun because everybody could wear, paint or create crazy nails. My favourite part was creating my own long pointy paper nails using a hot glue gun to stick down coloured paper and jewels
Lily Jung
I loved the Year 4 camp to Marysville, it was the best. My favourite part was the mountain bike riding and photo hunt.
Sophie Cannon
I really enjoyed and loved it when our KXP swung around, sharing our projects with our parents. The flexibility of this project was amazing and seeing everyone present was fascinating.
Sophie Hobbs
German Day was amazing; the giant pretzels were delicious and I won’t forget the German cider and Bratwurst sausages
Zara Albazzaz
I loved the events and experiences in Year 4, I wished the year would last forever.

Kate McLennan and Claudia Leahy, Year 5 Teachers
Year 5 is an exciting time where we welcome many new students to the Korowa family.
Students bonded with each other and their teachers while engaging in a variety of challenging outdoor activities and appreciating nature. Many new friendships blossomed, creating lasting memories. We delved into Indigenous culture, learning about bush tucker, artifacts and storytelling with Aunty Aurora, an esteemed leader of the Taungurung people. Upon returning to school, students eagerly embraced their new laptops to enhance their learning experiences. They also had the opportunity to choose a new instrument to learn and began exploring specialist classes such as Science, Dance and Drama.
Our year was filled with highlights, including the Potato Olympics, Big Day In, Book Week and the Classroom Economy unit which culminated in an incredibly successful ‘recycled’ market. We had numerous chances to collaborate as a cohort, and we’ve been thrilled to witness the students’ growth into a confident and assertive group, ready to embrace the leadership opportunities that Year 6 will bring.

Learning about how to start your own business has been really fun. The recycled craft market was an experience I will not forget.
Ariana Skordas
I really enjoyed the classroom economy experience because it was fun whilst learning about profit and loss and what resources are used to create different products.
Alice Zhang
It has been really fun learning about economics because we got to experience what it’s like to be an adult, earning a salary and paying bills.
Mackenzie Cox
It’s been an amazing year filled with lots of fun and learning opportunities.
Ruby Hillier

The final year of Junior School is a wonderful milestone to reach. This year the Year 6s have learnt a great deal and had many memorable experiences.
2024 began with the opportunity to apply for leadership positions, running lunchtime clubs, speaking at assemblies, wearing the Year 6 hoodie and traveling to Canberra for our Year 6 Capital Tour. The packed itinerary and hands-on experiences of the tour provided the girls with rich learning opportunities and enabled them to further develop connections with their peers. Term 2 saw the introduction of the Support Sisters program, fabulous performances for Founders’ Day and Mother’s Day celebrations and ended with all the excitement of Big Day In, with the girls eager to participate in this next year!
6A girls, you have taken risks in your thinking, stepped out of your comfort zone and grown so much intellectually, emotionally and socially since the beginning of the year. It has been a pleasure to be your teacher this year, and I look forward to seeing you progress through your schooling journey - just don’t forget to visit Junior School and say hello when you can!

Year 6 is an extremely fun and exciting year with lots of interesting activities and more specialists that you wouldn’t have in younger grades.

Lou Hatton, Year 6B Teacher
Semester 2 had many highlights:
KXP Celebration of Learning, fundraisers, cooking, book tasting in the Senior School Library, the Annual Music Concert, and many sporting events, just to name a few.
Starting the term with an excursion, we traveled by train to the Immigration Museum, where the students were immersed in Australia’s migration history. This experience was further enriched as they explored the migrant data on Sandridge Bridge. Back in the classroom, the students deepened their understanding and thoroughly enjoyed researching and sharing their own family migration stories. The learning culminated in an exciting exhibition, where students proudly created outstanding exhibits to share their knowledge with guests.
As all good things come to an end, so did the 2024 Year 6 adventure. What a wonderful and memorable time was had by all at the Graduation Assembly and Year 6 Disco!
Year 6B girls – what a pleasure it has been to be a part of your school journey. One thing that stood out to me from day one was your authentic kindness and care for each other. There was never a time when you weren’t watching out for one another, assisting when someone was not feeling confident or happy, and always taking time to check in with yourselves and others. Take this attribute with you as you move to Year 7 and beyond; and please remember as your growing continues to flourish and blossom, you can always come back to where it all began and visit us in Junior School.

Support Sisters has been an incredible leadership opportunity to help younger girls in the playground. Support Sisters help girls when they’re feeling down or need a friend.
Julia and Sophia
Year 6s could choose to participate in Debating. We discuss arguments, rebuttals, different speakers and many more fun debating skills. We have had many fun and exciting practise debates and we’ve even been able to have Year 10s come and teach us good debating strategies and we are extremely thankful for these experiences.
Doris and Eva T
Every couple of weeks 6B visit our Year 2 buddies in the Library. They choose their favourite book, and we read it with them.
Sally
Year 6 Band – one of the many highlights of our last year of primary school – is all about group collaboration and being together to play all sorts of pieces. This is a great way for students to explore unique kinds of music and to learn to play together as a group.

This year has been a fabulous journey of growth, experiential learning, and challenge for our Year 7 students.
From their very first week at Korowa, Year 7 embraced the orientation activities, focusing on building friendships and fostering meaningful connections. Demonstrating fearlessness, they stepped out of their comfort zones to form bonds that will last throughout Senior School.
At the Year 7 camp in Toolangi, they faced physical challenges such as abseiling and rock climbing and worked together in team-building exercises. Their curiosity to explore new experiences was evident as they tackled every obstacle with enthusiasm and support for one another.
GSV sports provided another platform for our students to shine. Competing against other schools, they had the opportunity to try a variety of sports, all while showcasing integrity—representing Korowa with pride and respect on and off the field.
The Music Gala allowed them to exhibit their talents as accomplished musicians. Their courage to perform in front of peers and family was commendable, and their performances were nothing short of impressive.
Empowerment Days further contributed to their development. In Semester 1, students learned valuable skills for resilience, wellbeing and study organisation. Semester 2’s city excursion shifted the focus to responsibility and leadership, in which the Year 7 students shone and were in their element.
As we conclude the year, I reflect on what makes the Class of 2029 unique—they are vibrant, adaptable and eager to try new things. Their compassion and kindness have been constant, and it will be a privilege to witness their continued growth in Year 8.

I really enjoyed Camp Toolangi because of the unique activities. I got to try new things that were out of my comfort zone like building a raft and then having to using it floating on the lake.
Elis S
On Empowerment Day I enjoyed the calm train ride and the forest walk. I enjoyed catching the train with my friends and doing the nature walk that was really fun.
Emma M and Esther
The key thing I took away from our Semester 1 Empowerment Day activities was how important it is to have a community you can lean on and social connections with others.
Jess W
I really enjoyed House Performing Arts week at the end of Term 3. I loved the teamwork, the dance rehearsals and building relationships with the Year 8 and 9 girls.
Olive H-H
Our Year 7 excursion for Empowerment Day was great. I enjoyed planning and navigating our trip to the museum. I learnt about Jane Goodall and her advice about finding hope and how everyone can make a difference.
Juliet and Jasmine
My favourite part about this year was starting the Korowa IT Club. I enjoyed teaching people about IT, its benefits and the positive uses for study and school learning. Thanks, Ms Krantz, for your help with the club.
Dom, Founder of KAGS IT Club

Tessa Hulsbosch, Head of Year 8
From our first day together, I knew Year 8 was going to be a special year.
Year 8 is a time of growth and discovery, and this cohort has shown incredible resilience and enthusiasm. This year has seen many leadership and team building opportunities for the Year 8s, including the Year 8 Shakespeare Days, in which each class worked together to perform shortened versions of classic plays. The success of the Shakespeare Days, school production and other school events involving the Year 8s shows their commitment to building on their collaboration skills, confidence and community spirit. They have embraced every opportunity, from our Empowerment Days to House events.
To put these skills to use, they attended camp in the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, where the students faced new challenges headon. They hiked 12 kilometres through diverse terrain, camped under the stars, cooked and cleaned together, and challenged themselves to engage in activities outside of their comfort zones. It was inspiring to see the students support one another, overcoming obstacles as a team and growing stronger together.
I have truly loved being Head of Year 8 and supporting their growth this year. It has meant so much to me that the students feel comfortable coming to me with their concerns and achievements. I am excited to continue this journey with them as they move into Year 9, and I can’t wait to see how they continue to develop, thrive and achieve great things!

Rachael Quirk, Head of Year 9
Year 9 at Korowa in 2024 was a year that embodied resilience, leadership and remarkable personal growth.
What truly stood out this year was the sense of community that allowed each individual to shine. The support students gave one another was key to both their personal successes and the success of the entire cohort. The encouragement, teamwork and kindness they showed not only helped them achieve their own goals, but also lifted the group to greater heights.
From the very start, Year 9 students embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and determination. The Trek and Quest adventures were standout experiences, pushing them to their limits and revealing the grit and strength they didn’t even know they had. The stories that emerged from these experiences, filled with perseverance and camaraderie, will surely be remembered for years to come.
House Arts week showcased not only their creative talents but also their incredible capacity for leadership and understanding. Watching them guide younger students with patience and grace was inspiring and highlighted how far they had come in their journey.
It has been an absolute pleasure to witness their development over the past two years. As they move forward to new challenges, the values and lessons learned in Year 9 will continue to serve them well. I look forward to seeing how they will keep growing and making an impact in the years to come at Korowa.

Paul Furman, Head of Year 10
From the very start of Term 1, Year 10 students embraced the ideas of community, kindness, responsibility and fairness.
Term 1 saw students take their first opportunity to lead the Korowa community by supporting Year 7 students as they began their journey through the Senior School. They also began to explore their future, engaging fully with external and internal programs to help explore the vast future opportunities available. Special mention must be made for the incredible level of resolve and determination demonstrated throughout the year level as they expertly advocated for their wishes.
Over two Empowerment Days, Year 10 explored their understanding of community, building friendships and connections that will form a strong support structure for their VCE journey. Similarly, they explored and developed resilience, developing life-long skills to help them navigate the inevitable challenges life holds.
To further illustrate their desire to help the community, and support women throughout Australia, recognition must be given to the exceptional charitable efforts undertaken by the students. While the dollar figure was impressive, the drive and passion that made this possible speaks volumes about the incredible calibre of students that make up our cohort.
Personally, I find it difficult to contain my pride in our cohort. We have an amazing array of individual personalities and perspectives, each valued, supported and celebrated for their differences. It is with joy and anticipation that I look forward to exploring what the future holds for our students.

Shelby Versa, Head of Year 11
This year marked a transformative journey for our Year 11 students, as they embraced leadership roles, confronted academic challenges and fostered community bonds.
As they transition to Year 12, they’ve had the opportunity to explore leadership in ways that go beyond titles, highlighting their responsibilities to the Korowa community.
Student voice and agency was a big part of 2024. The Year 11 student leaders fed back that activities which enabled them to work with different people and further their connection as a year level, were in high demand. This led to the Mentor v Mentor dodgeball match, year level trivia and, in a twist no one saw coming, the most intense 200-piece puzzle-solving competition Korowa has ever seen!
The year concluded with our annual residential experience at the University of Melbourne. This year students stayed at St Hilda’s College and participated in a program which aimed to both prepare them for their final year of schooling and life ‘beyond the gates.’
Now, as they prepare to assume senior leadership, the Year 11s have been challenged to consider how they will set standards for themselves and for future cohorts. They reflect on the values of kindness, inclusivity and integrity, setting a powerful example of unity and personal growth as they step into their roles as Korowa’s leaders of 2025.

Charlotte Lennie, Head of Year 12
The Class of 2024 brought their natural charisma and street smarts to craft an incredible final year for everyone at Korowa.
From the outset, under the sure leadership of their elected representatives (and including all the other unofficially appointed leaders within the group too), the students were unified and strong, understanding that with every ‘last’ they encountered - their last Formal, their last Athletics Day, their last Big Day In, even their last SAC - they would relish the moment it was, and cherish the memory it was to become.
Ideas were plentiful in how the students wanted their legacy to be: perhaps it should be their generous sharing of experience and knowledge with the younger years, perhaps it should be a new tradition they could initiate that might breathe eternal life into generations of celebration to come; or perhaps they could continue to be brave with their choices, aspirations and voice, so those following in their shadow may feel comfortable walking towards their sure light of the way.
In everything, the Year 12s wanted to be part of something special within Korowa and they have achieved this. Beyond courage, curiosity and integrity, they knew they could make a real difference to the sum of the moving parts and their contribution is everywhere to see. So, while undoubtedly there will be tears of goodbye and hugs that they will not want to stop, these students can feel reassured in leaving those familiar school gates for the last time, that they will be remembered fondly. And for the students themselves? Well, they also hold a mature perspective about the importance of moving forward too, without looking back in regret.
It has been my absolute honour to be allowed to share these students’ inspiring path for a while and to get to know each one of the varied personalities that have created this unforgettable cohort. I thank them for a thoughtful, fun, exciting and surprising two years and say to them always, what feels like the end is often (just) the beginning.

This year, one of our major points of focus in English has been helping students from Years 7–12 to develop their voices and their ability to communicate their ideas to a range of audiences. In Year 7 English, students completed a debating unit, presenting their point of view on topics such as changing the date of Australia Day. At the other end of the School, our Year 12 English cohort completed the first year of the new “Creating Texts” Area of Study for VCE, producing their own speeches, monologues and essays exploring the theme of Protest. It has been wonderful seeing our students embrace the opportunity to express their ideas so thoughtfully and authentically.
Korowa continues to offer a wide range of extension and enrichment opportunities, catering to diverse interests across the school. From writing and maths competitions to the da Vinci Decathlon, Mathematics Enrichment, Philosophy classes, and the Ethics Olympiad, there’s something to challenge and inspire every student. This year, Korowa celebrated notable success in the da Vinci Decathlon, with our Year 6 team winning their division and the Year 5 team placing third. Our Year 7 - Year 10 teams also performed impressively, placing in the top four teams across various disciplines. Another enrichment highlight was the Write a Book in a Day event, where over 60 Year 7 - 10 students wrote, illustrated, and published a book in a single day. Additionally, 2024 marked the relaunch of our Senior School Chess Club under the expert coaching of Mr Frank Curigliano, with students gathering every Friday for friendly chess matches. This regular engagement has fostered both camaraderie and skill development among our students, further enhancing their passion for the game. Korowa was proud to host an all-girls chess competition in Term 3, where both our Junior and Senior teams qualified for the Chess Australia State Finals. Hosting the State Chess Championships gave our teams a fantastic opportunity to showcase their skills on home ground. With 120 students from 19 schools participating, the competition was fierce! A huge congratulations to both of our teams for their hard work and dedication, placing sixth in their respective divisions. Well done to all involved!

Christine Wintle
In Food Studies, students have moved beyond the classroom to examine broader themes. Our Year 9 Café For A Day students took part in barista skills training while also undertaking an accredited Food Handler’s Certificate. Year 10 students started their own garden to discover the benefits of growing our own produce including a range of vegetables and herbs. Our VCE students studied food subcultures in Unit 1 looking at fermented foods to improve gut health.
2024 has been a wonderful year in Humanities. Throughout our diverse subject offerings, students continue to develop their critical and creative thinking skills and ability to apply their knowledge to real world contexts. In History, our Year 7s delved into solving history mysteries. In Geography, our Year 8s used their knowledge of urbanisation to determine the best location for new housing developments. In Commerce, our Year 9s participated in interactive activities where they developed life skills around banking, purchasing property and investing in the stock market. Our Year 10s had rich learning experiences participating in a mock trial and exploring the Queen Victoria Market. These opportunities allow students to see how their knowledge applies outside the walls of Korowa and enhances their passion for all things Humanities.

2024 has been another action-packed year in Languages. Across several year levels, many students entered the French Berthe Mouchette poetry competition and/or the German Goethe poetry competition, with great success at both the regional and state finals. Some Year 9 and Year 10 students were involved in an Inter-school French Trivia Night, with Year 10 winning first place. Students studying French enjoyed a croissant morning whilst those studying Japanese were involved in onigiri and sushi making. German students tasted pretzels and Year 7 students participated in a puppet show while Year 10 were involved in creating a promotional video clip in German. All students of Chinese enjoyed a Dragon Boat Festival, and some Year 10 and Year 11 students competed in a debating competition, achieving third place in the state. In Years 10 and 11, after hosting an overseas student in July, a number of students participated in the Immersion trips to France, Japan and China, which provided them with opportunities to put their language skills into practice.

This year, numerous students from ELC to Year 12 have been involved in the Learning Support program. Our dedicated team, with expertise in executive functioning skills, assistive technologies and more, has provided invaluable guidance and assistance. We worked closely with the Health and Wellbeing team to offer additional support, including hearing screening and access to our Wellbeing and Regulation Room. We were delighted to welcome Ms Susanna Tam to the department in Term 2. Susanna led intervention programs for several students. Korowa’s wellbeing dogs, Ivy and Henry, continued to ease anxiety and challenges for countless students across both our Junior and Senior Schools. Finally, we thank the Korovians who returned as volunteer in-class mentors, offering personal experience and advice to senior students.
It has been another outstanding year for the Library. Junior School students eagerly took part in the highly anticipated Bookmark Competition, the 100-word story writing event and Book Week. As always, Book Week was met with great enthusiasm, with Junior School students enjoying sessions with visiting authors and ELC students engaging with Rebecca from the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation. Senior School students and staff across all levels took part in the inaugural Read Around the World Challenge, a collaborative effort between the Senior School Library and the English department. This activity saw high levels of engagement and intense competition among the classes. We look forward to continuing this event next year! I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Library Staff, Palm Leaf Captains and Junior School Library Captains and committee for their tremendous efforts this year in fostering inclusivity and highlighting all the wonderful events that make our Library a truly magical place.

The Mathematics department has had an outstanding year in 2024, with students across Years 5 - 12 excelling in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). Several students secured top positions, with 64 students receiving Distinction awards and eight achieving High Distinctions. Joyce Lin (Year 9) and Grace Lu (Year 9) achieved the Best in School award. This success reflects the department’s commitment to fostering mathematical talent and problem-solving skills. The students’ hard work and dedication, combined with the excellent support from our teaching staff, have brought recognition to our school. We look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence in the coming years, encouraging more students to participate and excel.

Our classroom Music programs aim to take each student from their current level of experience, acknowledging the interests of each individual. The Friday ensemble component of our Year 7 and 8 subject sees all students participating in group music activities, from Concert Band, Choir or String Orchestra to three rotations of Gamelan (Indonesian Orchestra), guitar and vocals and African drumming. All students in these year levels present three concerts to each other across the year. The third fortnightly Music lesson for Year 7 and 8 allows students to experientially learn about music through composition, using both traditional notation (Year 7) and a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) in Year 8. Students also learn about and respond to music in our world. Our Year 9 and 10 electives aim to both stand alone and provide skills and knowledge for future music study at VCE. Students aim to extend their performance skills, compose (including song-writing and recording studio experience - Year 9 Kool Skools) and analyse music using increasingly sophisticated subject-specific terminology.

The Performing Arts department have had an exciting year full of performances, exploration and creative collaboration. The Year 7-9 musical Newsies JR. was an experience enjoyed by all. The Senior play, Little Women showcased the many talents of our Senior students from acting to lighting and direction. Our classroom programs have allowed our students to explore Shakespeare, melodrama, contemporary Australian theatre, physical theatre and nonnaturalistic theatre styles. The Year 9 performance of the Appleton Ladies’ Potato Race was a highlight performance event and was received well by audiences. We were excited to have our Year 10 students taking part in the Malthouse, Suitcase Series, performing an original ensemble piece inspired by global warming. A year full of performances and creative exploration, we look forward to Drama and Dance at Korowa continuing to grow into 2025.

In 2024, Physical Education offered students in Years 7-12 opportunities to participate in a diverse range of activities which encourage lifelong participation and develop strategic thinking, cooperation and movement skills. This year we also welcomed the addition of a new Year 7-10 Health Curriculum. Through Health and PE combined, students developed the knowledge, understanding and skills to strengthen their sense of self, enhance their safety, wellbeing and build confidence to complete regular physical activity. In Years 7 and 8, students enjoyed learning about making healthy choices and participating in many small-side competitive games. In Years 9 and 10, students relished the opportunity to focus on their personal fitness goals and enjoyed learning about safe partying and respectful relationships. In VCE, our students have loved putting theory into practice, including biomechanics and the VO2 max and Lactate Threshold tests in PE, and the Baby Vegetable task in Health and Human Development.

Science, this year, has been filled with excitement, exploration and opportunity with students engaging broadly in practical activities across all subjects and exploring aspects of Science that captivate their curiosity through their participation in our offering of extracurricular competitions. Among the myriads of activities, some of the year’s highlights included our Science Week House paper aeroplane and drone flying competitions, our Units 3 and 4 Physics class exploring motion at Luna Park, the annual Titration Competition, the dissections which formed part of our Year 7 and 8 Science classes, and the variety of the individual practical investigations conducted across our Year 10 and VCE classes. Our students achieved highly across all extracurricular competitions with students achieving High Distinctions in the Australian Science Olympiads, a Major Bursary in the Science Talent Search for experimental investigation, and silver and gold awards in the Australian Informatics Olympiad. Two of our students achieved at such an outstanding level that they were selected to attend the summer school training camps for the Physics and Informatics Olympiads.

With the hard work of our coaching and support team, Korowa Sporting programs continued to grow in size and success. Korowa had a fantastic year, with many students participating in weekly sports and carnival events, consistently achieving great results. Korowa sporting clubs also had a successful year, with Snowsports, Netball and Basketball Clubs achieving outstanding results. Korowa Rowing Club started the 2024-25 season well with large numbers and the welcoming of our new Year 7 cohort to the freshly landscaped River Campus.
As the new Head of Art this year, I have had the great pleasure of witnessing the vibrancy and activity within our thriving Visual Arts department. Our students have engaged in a diverse range of artistic endeavours, each offering unique opportunities for growth and creativity. The Year 7 students collaborated once again on large abstract paintings, showcasing their ability to explore bold forms and colours. The Year 8 students created an impressive collection of ceramic dogs, each piece reflecting quirky, distinct personalities and demonstrating remarkable skill development in ceramics. Our Year 10 Art and Design students were fortunate to curate and design a pop-up exhibition at the Monash University Museum of Art. This year, their focus was on global warming, with the highly endangered Victorian weedy sea dragon as their central subject. The evening was a resounding success and an inspiring showcase of their work. Senior Art and Design students have had the opportunity to explore a wide array of exhibitions at Melbourne galleries, which will no doubt inspire and enrich their own future artmaking. Finally, in November, we celebrated the high calibre of work from our Visual Art, Design, and Media students at our Annual Art, Design, and Media Exhibition, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Students participating in the Chinese immersion program spent the first part of their trip at the Fudan University Affiliated High School, one of China’s renowned institutions. There, they boarded and attended classes with their Chinese student buddies. They also participated in cultural lessons, learning about traditional instruments, calligraphy, Chinese painting, and the tea ceremony. When not in school, students explored some of the most iconic attractions near Shanghai, such as the Zhu Jia Jiao Ancient Town, the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Yu Garden. The second part of the trip was a sightseeing tour of other cities, such as Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Wuxi. This was not just a trip - it was an unforgettable journey into the heart of Chinese culture!

Eloise Perry (Class of 2024) and Jessie Chen (Class of 2024)
At the end of 2023, 25 of us from Years 10 and 11 embarked on a journey of a lifetime, travelling all the way to Bordeaux, where our host families greeted us. Thus, an amazing three weeks started. What with attending school every day, attempting to converse without trusty Google Translate, and fitting in with the French teenagers at school, we never had the time to get bored. We tried many authentic foods such as cannelés and escargots. We were taken on amazing excursions to places like the Dune du Pilat, sometimes together and sometimes with our families. Our last week was spent in Paris, where we visited iconic sites like the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe, and Notre Dame. An absolute highlight was a day trip to Versailles to explore Louis XIV’s famous palace and gardens. All in all, what an incredible experience!

Alice Liberman (Class of 2025)
Staying with a German host family and attending school with our exchange sisters was an amazing immersive experience. We saw some of Europe’s most iconic sites from visiting Neuschwanstein Castle to the Marienplatz in Münich to various galleries and churches. It was especially magical to be in Germany during the lead-up to Christmas, going to bustling Christmas markets and experiencing snow for the first time for some of us. Warm pretzels each morning was definitely a special treat. We learned so much about the language, history and culture of Germany that we absolutely recommend doing such an exchange – bring some warm boots, though!

Joy Wang (Class of 2024)
The December immersion trip to Japan was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will never forget! In Kyoto, visiting historic landmarks and famous sites such as Kiyomizu Temple, Arashiyama, and Kyoto Tower gave us a deeper insight into the history and values Japan upholds! Then, in Nara Deer Park, we found the deer bowing before they took crackers from us! At our sister school, Hikarigaoka, we were overwhelmed by how welcoming everyone was. Attending classes and homestays was incredible! We are so grateful for so many memories and making friends in Japan that we still remain in contact with today!

The 2024 China immersion trip was truly an unforgettable experience. During our time at our sister school, the High School Affiliated to Fudan University in Shanghai, we not only immersed ourselves in China’s learning environment but also received a warm welcome and built lasting friendships with teachers and study buddies. We learned more than we ever imagined, inspired by the school’s academic atmosphere, motivated by the dedication and spirit of the teachers, and touched by the camaraderie among the students. We also explored scenic spots in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Wuxi, and Suzhou, visiting landmarks such as The Bund, the Oriental Pearl Tower, Yu Garden, West Lake, and ancient Water Towns. Experiencing China’s modern development, authentic cuisine, and traditional art, we created memories that will remain with us forever.

Our students have embarked on an incredible journey at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama! Immersed in hands-on experiences, they’re exploring the future of space travel, developing problem-solving skills, and working as a team to tackle real-world challenges. From simulating missions to the ISS, moon, and Mars to training like astronauts, they’re gaining leadership and engineering expertise that will inspire them for years to come. We’re so excited that our students made it there in the end, and so grateful to Korowa staff Paige Kranz and Brenda Linsell for sharing in their experience. An unforgettable opportunity to dream big, reach for the stars, and grow as leaders of the future!

Véronique Tormey, Acting Head of Languages
Sixteen girls and two incredible teachers embarked on the unforgettable three-week 2024 French Exchange to Bordeaux and Paris. Spending two weeks immersed in French family life in Bordeaux and attending school offered us a unique and invaluable glimpse into the French lifestyle. Our days were a balanced mix of school, city tours, and excursions to breathtaking locations like the Dune du Pilat and Arcachon. In Paris, every moment was packed with adventure as we explored the many wonders of the capital. We marveled at Versailles, ascended la Tour Eiffel, admired L’Arc de Triomphe, strolled down les Champs-Élysées, delved into the art of le Musée D’Orsay, and soaked in the magic of Christmas lights and markets. Though the pace was intense, the experience was undeniably rewarding. The exchange challenged us, taught us, and greatly enriched our understanding of the French language and culture.

Eri Shinagawa, Senior
During our stay in Kyoto, we explored the stunning bamboo forests of Arashiyama and crafted traditional Japanese sweets to enjoy alongside matcha. We wandered through famous temples and shrines, then met the charming deer in Nara. Our journey continued with a homestay, where we bonded with our host sister and family and got to experience school life in Japan. The school introduced us to cultural activities like calligraphy, deepening our understanding of Japanese traditions. On the final day of school, each of us delivered a three-minute speech about three new words we had learned during the trip—a nerve-wracking yet rewarding challenge to practice our Japanese speaking skills. The exchange trip was truly unforgettable, filled with unique experiences and the perfect way to close out the year.

This year marked a milestone for Korowa’s iconic Year 9 Trek program, celebrating 30 years of challenging adventures and transformative learning.
In partnership with Outward Bound Australia for the first time, three groups of students embarked on a 30-day journey from the NSW Alpine region to the Victorian coast. Through bushwalking, rafting, solo reflection and teamwork, students not only navigated stunning landscapes but also delved deeply into the theme: “What does it take to make and maintain a healthy community?”
The journey began with a bushwalk through the alpine region, including a triumphant summit of Mt Kosciuszko. Students faced strong winds in higher elevations and high humidity in lower regions, relying on one another for encouragement and support. They learned firsthand that a healthy community thrives on shared effort, understanding and trust. Whether setting up camp, preparing meals or planning routes, each person’s contribution was vital to the group’s success.
The 48-hour solo experience was a profound moment of individual and collective growth. While students rested and reflected in solitude under tarps, they were also aware of their role in the larger community. The letters they read and the lessons they considered during this time emphasised how personal resilience contributes to the strength of a group.
White-water rafting down the Snowy River was another defining moment, requiring clear communication, teamwork and perseverance. Students quickly realised that thriving as a community means adapting to challenges together, whether navigating rapids or supporting one another through fatigue.
Throughout the journey, students explored the complexities of building a supportive, inclusive, and functional community. They discovered that fostering such a group requires trust, active listening, shared responsibility, and a willingness to uplift each other in moments of struggle. These lessons, drawn from Trek’s triumphs and challenges, will be ones they carry into future endeavours.
As Trek enters its fourth decade, it continues to be a cornerstone of Korowa’s commitment to holistic education. By blending adventure with deep lessons about community, resilience and self-discovery, the program remains a transformative experience that shapes confident, curious and compassionate individuals ready to contribute to the world.

Rachael Quirk, Head of Year 9
The Quest program has been an extraordinary journey for our students, offering them the chance to engage with social justice, animal conservation and land conservation initiatives across Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.
Offered the choice of three immersive programs, students actively participated in service projects that not only broadened their horizons but also nurtured meaningful connections with their peers and the communities they served.
Key highlights of Quest included hands-on volunteering, enlightening education sessions and heartfelt personal stories shared by individuals within these communities. Students bonded over shared meals, lively bus rides and collaborative activities, forming memories and friendships that will last beyond the five-week programs. These experiences offered a unique blend of challenge and reward as students witnessed the power of community in action—both on a small and large scale.
The achievements of this program extend far beyond the tangible outcomes of the service projects. Quest has cultivated resilience, persistence and personal growth in each participant. Students not only deepened their understanding of important societal and environmental issues but also gained a clearer sense of themselves and their capabilities.
A heartfelt thank you must go to Sharon Cox, whose vision and dedication brought Quest to life. Her meticulous planning, thoughtful development of the program and unwavering commitment to ensuring each student felt supported, were instrumental in its success.
We look forward to seeing what lasting impact this experience will have on our students and the broader community.

2024 has proven to be another amazing year from a House point of view. Big Day In, arguably the biggest event on the House team’s calendar, was once again a resounding success. From the many student-organised and run stalls, a record-breaking total of more than $13,000 was raised.
The funds raised are going to our sister school on Bhola Island in Bangladesh to help with the educational needs of disadvantaged girls and young women. A raffle was also held on the day, featuring prizes generously donated by businesses around Melbourne. These businesses included Ashburton Family Pharmacy, Bakers Delight (Malvern Central and Carnegie), Carman’s Kitchen, Eden Espresso, Giro Giro Oli, Grill’d Carnegie, Heathershaw’s Compounding Pharmacy, Luna Park, Malvernvale Hotel and Nemtsas Pharmacy. We would like to acknowledge the generosity of these businesses. The White Group (TWG), the company that runs our Ivory Café, also donated $1000 worth of sausages. We are very grateful for their kindness and willingness to support the School community.
The lunchtime competitions continued. Dodgeball, Just Dance, Debating and a land rowing competition helped increase House spirit and foster a friendly rivalry between Houses.
In Term 3, House breakfasts were held in the Ivory Café. Students from all year levels bonded and started off their school day with waffles, pancakes and other delicious goodies.
We enjoyed some intense competition through the traditional House events such as House Swimming, House Athletics, House CrossCountry, House Chorals and House Arts.
A big thank you must go to the outgoing House Captains, Rachel Rosenow, Lucy Wiliams, Charlotte Hedges, Jana Nguyen, Hannah Kirton, Anh Ly, Dimitra Sfyridis and Alecia Tian for all their efforts and hard work to help make 2024 an amazing year for the Korowa Houses.
Congratulations must go to Jamieson for taking out all three cups this year: the Cripps Cup, House Sport Cup and the House Honour Cup. Well done to all students who participated in House events throughout the year.
As an exciting and rewarding year ends, we welcome the incoming 2025 House Captains Mia Tan and Jessica Williams (Akehurst), Elena Spiropoulos and Emma Ogilvie (Clarke), Audrey Ye and Nellie Whithouse (Jamieson), and Lucy Renfrey and Rhea Brahmanand (Wilkinson), and we look forward to working with them in the coming year.
It is with great sadness that we announce that Andy Murray will step down from his role as Clarke Head of House. He has been an invaluable member of the Head of Houses Team and always has shown great Clarke House spirit. He will be missed. We welcome Megan Downie as the new Clarke Head of House and look forward to working with her in her role. We know the Clarke community will thrive under her leadership.

Akey is more than just a House, it’s a home! We are so proud to be part of an amazing family that is so supportive, friendly and bubbly!
After an Olympic-esque effort in House Swimming, Akey welcomed 2024 with open jazz hands, starting with House Chorals. Moving to a new venue sparked anticipation among the entire Senior School as everyone quickly started work on preparations for the performance of a lifetime. Voices coming together as one, dancers leaping down the halls, the School was brought to life! Akey’s winning rendition of The Smurfs left us all holding our stomachs in laughter while our dance performers wowed audiences with their daring blindfolds.
Instrumental had one of our largest ensembles and was a dream to listen to, and who could forget about the choir!
Together as one, Akey sung with passion to spread the message of female empowerment. Our original piece was just as impactful with an unforgettable melody about the bonds built in Akey. With stars in our hair, a second place win and the ultimate Akey spirit, it was truly a night to remember!
Our chosen theme for 2024 was ‘Akey Agents’, inviting everyone to embody their inner secret spy. We loved seeing everyone spray the competition with water guns and have the time of their lives competing. This year has been an absolute blast and we cannot thank our Akey family enough! You have truly made this year so special and will forever be part of our Akey hearts.

Charlotte Hedges and Jana Nguyen
This year, Clarke House captivated audiences with the theme ‘Cirque du Clarke’, celebrating our extraordinary talents and friendships as always.
Our swimmers made waves with impressive skills and teamwork, notably winning the staff-student relay by a considerable margin. Our performances at House Chorals soared to new heights, with harmonies captivating audiences and embodying the essence of our theme. At House Athletics, we showcased exceptional talent and perseverance, bringing home the Middle School Cup and reflecting our bright future. Our athletes pushed themselves to new limits and demonstrated incredible support for one another. The ‘Cirque du Clarke’ theme truly came to life, along with the smiling faces of all who participated. It was a day to remember and a wonderful moment to be part of Clarke!
This year, Clarke House achieved remarkable milestones, from top event placements to celebrating 100 years of Clarke House with a special morning tea attended by students from Year 7 to former Clarke Captains, including alumni from the Class of 1954. This momentous occasion highlighted our enduring legacy and showcased how our spirit extends far beyond the school. Here’s to 100 years of pink, smiles, and friendship!
As we look back on an incredible year, we want to say thank you. To our students for their dedication, to our teachers and staff for their support, and to our families for their encouragement—your efforts made ‘Cirque du Clarke’ a memorable success. Let’s continue to shine brightly as we do, Clarke House, embracing every opportunity that comes our way.

Hannah Kirton and Anh Ly
Our time as Jamie Captains has been greater than we could’ve ever imagined. The moment we selected our theme of ‘Jamie Jetsetters’, we knew we would be jet-setting towards a jampacked year.
Our first stop was House Swimming, where we saw the commitment and dedication of our House shine through. Specifically, the Jamie cheering during the first ever House synchronised swimming is something we won’t forget.
Our next stop was House Chorals, which saw the Jamie community bring their brave and tune into their musical side. The night was extraordinary, and after some amazing performances, Jamie took home the win!
The energy didn’t stop there, with House Athletics just around the corner. Dressed as pilots, planes and passengers, the JamFam cheered each other on, with highlights being an amazing win for both the Year 12 Overhead Relay and the Student-Teacher Relay. We soared our way to an overall first place, marking Jamieson’s third win!
Aside from the big events, we had some incredible moments within the House. In particular, Jamie celebrated its 100th birthday with cake, party hats and the Jamieson family! We loved every House meeting as they gave us the chance to celebrate our wins, connect as a House and make unforgettable memories.
Thank you to our wonderful Head of House, Ms Versa, who has co-piloted this plane. And finally, as we land at our final destination, we couldn’t have done it without the passion and support from our JamFam. Thank you all for an amazing adventure!

Dimitra Sfyridis and Alecia Tian
In the famous words of Wilky World Tour pop superstar Tay-Tay, “Hold on to the memories, they will hold on to you.”
In 2024 Wilkinson House has created unforgettable memories and continuously embodied our theme of Wilky World Tour. Like all the famous popstars, Wilkinson students stepped out of their comfort zone and showed admirable courage and unwavering support for each other.
Some 2024 career highlights for wonderful Wilky were winning the House Athletics Population Cup, House Goalball and the Education Perfect Cup, while finishing runners-up in many other events. We are so proud of everyone’s achievements throughout these events.
Another spotlight moment was House Cross Country, where all Senior students competed and ran with their friends to the finish line, showcasing Wilky’s resilience and friendship.
A huge thank you to our Tour Manager (aka Head of House), Mr Furman for his commitment and constant mentoring. Another special shout out to our fellow Year 12s, who displayed honourable leadership and encouragement. Without them the show would not go on. Thank you for an amazing year, and we can’t wait for the Wilky Family to grow and prosper in 2025.

Zixuan (Jessica) Zhu

From the budding ideas of the year’s start that to the series of impactful projects and actions taken a few months later, Korowa’s progress in sustainability this year has been nothing short of extraordinary.
The year commenced with students brimming with creative initiatives during Term 1, setting the stage for innovative sustainability projects for the terms to come. Meanwhile, Term 2 brought the annual ‘Say Yay to Nude Food May’ event, encouraging waste-free lunches and fostering a culture of environmental mindfulness within our school community.
Term 3 was even more dynamic, marked by the implementation of the much-anticipated Stay Cup and Keep Cup system from the first day of term. Shortly later, the Environment Committee hosted an Interschool Sustainability Partnership meeting at Korowa, where our students and peers from other schools shared insights on sustainability and discussed recent projects and areas of improvement. Our tree planting session at Gardiner’s Creek in celebration of National Tree Day further solidified our commitment to helping the wider community, displaying our dedication through hands-on action.
This year’s achievements in sustainability within our school has proven that through the collective efforts of our students, Korowa can absolutely change itself to become more environmentally conscious. It has been truly a privilege to serve the School as Environment Captain this year and to witness and promote the sustainability actions of the Korowa community, and I have no doubt that our school will continue to strive to make change in the years to come.

Qiaojun (Lilian) Chen

The Visual Arts Department has been an epicentre of activity in 2024, full of student projects, exhibitions and innovation. Students here are provided with a haven of compassion and camaraderie.
The enthusiasm for the Visual Arts this year was as strong as ever. In Term 1, the Year 11 and 12 Art Making and Exhibiting classes saw the NGV Triennial, while the Year 11 and 12 Media and Year 12 Visual Communication Design classes visited Top Designs and Top Screens. Year 9 Foundations of Design students were involved in designing the Newsies JR. posters, Korowa’s 135th Anniversary souvenir badge for 2025, and the 2024 Trek and Quest T-shirt logos. Meanwhile, Year 9 Exploring Multimedia students attended Australia’s International Festival of Photography, PHOTO 24, that, explored contemporary photography in the city.
Weekly workshops in multiple art forms, including crocheting, plein air and ceramics were led by Visual Arts staff and students at lunchtime hosted by the Art Club. Moreover, the Visual Arts department’s Celebration Week initiative featured DIY ceramic pot painting inspired by traditional Chinese blue-white porcelain, celebrating cultural diversity while encouraging greater participation in the visual arts.
In addition, the Art Committee has been working very hard behind the scenes to continue the design project for Korowa’s bathrooms, which will soon be completed. The committee successfully raised funds for Korowa’s sister school in Bangladesh by selling student-made stickers at their Big Day In stall during Term 3.
It has been an honour to serve as the Visual Arts Captain for this year and I’ve recognised the importance of taking on the role of helping students to celebrate their passions and skills. I’m hoping that the Korowa community will keep showcasing and appreciating the abilities of our students, and I have no doubt that the department will have a brilliant future.

Julia Xiang
The Oxford dictionary defines debate as “a competition in which teams of people, often students, discuss a subject.” But this year has proven that debating extends far beyond this definition.
Debating at Korowa is not just a competition – it is a community of the brightest students and most supportive teachers.
The Debating community has experienced many amazing victories. Just to mention a few: Alice Liberman in Year 11 travelled to Serbia this year to represent Australia and debate on an international level. She says: “It was one of the best experiences of my life - so many interesting people and places and I had lots of fun debating! Go Australia!”
Another amazing feat: Our Year 7 Team 4 (Kathryn Kieu, Joyce Du, Evelyn Mitchell-Kempe and Mahya Nieroshan) took home the victory of Urwin Centre Competition.
This year, Debating participated in Model UN – where students from Years 9-12 had the opportunity to step into the shoes of diplomats from Ukraine to New Zealand.
We’ve also been named the first girls’ school to win the Deakin Law Debate! Debra Zhang, Audrey Ye and I took home the trophy after battling it out in the Deakin Moot Court.
The biggest win, however, is the culture that we have developed around Debating. It is safe to say we’ve firmly established a community where all the yappers and ramblers in the School can channel their passion and gain confidence. Without the students’ commitment, and infallible support from teachers and coaches (especially Mr Stewart, Tom and Ms Attard), Debating would simply be a competition. But thanks to you all, it is so much more. So proud to propose!

Debra Zhang
Working and performing among the phenomenal students in the Performing Arts felt like the most gratifying and inspiring experience in my final year at Korowa, as their achievements throughout the year have been unbelievable.
It has been my absolute pleasure to lead a group of such talented and passionate students through our Drama endeavours this year – including both our Year 7-9 Musical of Newsies JR. and our Year 10-12 performance of Little Women. It is absolutely wonderful to see the Drama community continue to grow each year and to see involvement surge in all that Drama has to offer.
Little Women was an exciting new opportunity for students this year, as it included the chance to work with a professional from the industry, Lyall Brooks. This gave students a unique artistin-residence experience enabling the Senior students to develop their dramatic skills and to watch their own creation come to life.
For me, the true life of Drama has been and continues to be the traditional events that have transcended throughout the years, including House Chorals, House Arts, K-Factor and classroom drama ensembles/solo performances. It is in these events that we see the culture of Drama, and it has truly been my privilege to have known such a wonderful group of people, whose talent and dedication continues to inspire.

Jiaqi (Jacqueline) Deng
Being Music Captain this year has been an honour, allowing me to work towards the goal of bringing more recognition to our music students and providing everyone with more performance opportunities.
In 2024, we saw the continuation of the Music Committee, now in its second year, featuring ensemble leaders and year level representatives. Our regular fortnightly meetings were open to all students and were a place to have productive discussions about how to improve and promote music at Korowa.
We had our familiar music events throughout the year, such as Autumn Jazz, the Victorian Schools Music Festival and Generations in Jazz. In addition, our advanced string players were invited to participate in the Richard Gill Festival of Strings at the end of Term 1, hosted by Camberwell Grammar, where we played a spectacular arrangement of the Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony alongside five other schools.
In Term 2, we held the Winter Showcase, the second ever Music Captain’s Fundraising Concert, organised by the Music Committee and me, featuring a diverse range of music from soloists and ensembles, including classical, jazz, and musical theatre. Korowa’s Wind Symphony also had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with the St Kevin’s College Senior Concert Band.
Of course, there was the Gala Concert in Term 3, with the theme of ‘It’s About Time’, which was a great success. It’s always a joy to experience the liveliness that goes on backstage in the Melbourne Recital Centre and see our music students showcase their hard work to the Korowa community.

Gabrielle Hornsby

It has been an honour to serve as Social Service Captain this year, leading initiatives that fostered community engagement and supported meaningful causes.
One of the standout moments was Crazy Nail Day, where students decorated their nails in wild designs to raise funds for the Anglican Overseas Aid Project. This was a particular highlight as it gave me, along with other members of the community, time to spend with the younger year levels, bringing everyone together for a great cause.
During Reconciliation Week, everyone wore yellow ribbons, and a special menu at the Ivory Café was offered, to raise money for Children’s Ground, an organisation supporting our First Nations communities.
Other initiatives, such as the House Athletics Bake Sale and the Winter Pet Blanket Drive, were incredible projects to work on. I am unbelievably proud of what Korowa has accomplished this year and grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of such meaningful efforts within my community.

As the International Captain, I’ve had the privilege of fostering cross-cultural understanding and bringing our diverse student body together through various activities and celebrations.
My role has allowed me to lead and organise key events that celebrate different cultures, promoting inclusivity and unity.
One of the highlights of my tenure, was coordinating the paper-cutting activity for Chinese New Year. This traditional art form not only introduced students to Chinese culture but also engaged them in a hands-on experience, allowing them to learn about the significance of the Lunar New Year through creativity and craftsmanship.
Another memorable event was bracelet making during Celebration Week. This activity symbolised the importance of cultural exchange, where students created unique designs inspired by different traditions around the world. The event was not just about crafting but also about fostering conversations on the importance of diversity and inclusion in our school community.
Throughout my time as International Captain, I’ve been proud of the impact these events have had. I’ve worked closely with fellow students, faculty, and staff to ensure that we create an environment where everyone feels represented and valued, and I’ve learned a great deal about leadership and collaboration in the process.

With a focus on fostering connectivity and community throughout the year levels, the role of the Sports Captain has provided me with an insight into what sport truly means to Korowa students and an experience I’ll never forget.
The level of enthusiasm and participation this year has been nothing short of extraordinary. Our major goal was to fully utilise the Sports and Wellbeing Centre by implementing various programs, like Korowa Fit and Pilates, and promoting general use of the gym. These efforts were highly successful and inspired a significant number of students and staff to get active.
The GSV Sports and rowing programs are also good indicators as to the sporting depth and talent present among the Korowa community. Throughout the seasons, students continued to push themselves out of their comfort zones, resulting in many medals at the GSV Finals Nights and the rowing teams achieving success at National level competitions. This dedication not only highlighted individual success but also reflected the vibrant and ambitious spirit of our sporting community.
It has been an absolute honour to be the Sports Captain this year and I am so grateful for the opportunities that have come with this role. Being a part of such a supportive and lively community has been truly inspiring and taught me to cherish my time in the Sports department. I am so proud of all we have accomplished and eager to see what exciting things will happen in the future.

Andrea (Andie) Tolentino
Known for its harsh weather conditions and early mornings at Central Park, the cross-country season has always been one to look forward to in the year. The season began in Term 2 with training sessions twice a week and weekly meets which helped gain momentum into the first carnival. As the season progressed, the team grew stronger not only in the way we performed but also in our community spirit. Some highlights this year were the Inters winning their division at the Championship Carnival and five students placing in the top 10 at the event. Overall, the season was a testament to the team’s hard work and dedication, marking another successful chapter of cross-country at Korowa.
Sophie Mordue
2024 began with three hours at Aqualink before the school year even star ted! Many new Juniors joined the squad and improved greatly throughout the early morning training sessions with our exceptional coach, Jenny Donnet. When we headed to the Division 2 Carnival, everyone was well prepared. With support from their peers, there were many fantastic performances. The Senior girls started strongly with all three placing and the team coming second. The Intermediates also placed second and our Juniors came seventh, giving us a second place finish overall – a great achievement! Mia and Mackenzies’ first placings saw them progress to the prestigious Finals Evening, where they achieved sixth and second, respectively. Congratulations girls, and well done to everyone for your commitment and enthusiasm.
Lucy Gordon and Annabel Cox
Korowa Netball has had an amazing year across both the spring and autumn seasons with participants and teams across the year levels. As captains, we have had the joy of seeing the growth of both teams and individuals, through the development of new friendships and skills, whether that be during the Saturday competition, GSV Sport or House Netball. We have also observed great anticipation and excitement surrounding exhibition matches such as the Student vs Teachers, Students vs Korovians and the Korowa vs De La Salle netball matches, displaying the true passion for netball at Korowa. We hope everyone has made the most of all that Korowa offers for the netball community and continues to enjoy this sport for many more years to come.
Hannah Kirton and Abby Sharrock
The 2023/2024 rowing season was filled with excitement, teamwork and success. January camp was a week of hard training, squad bonding, a night of trivia and some very fast racing. A highlight was the annual Coaches vs Captains race, where the captains’ boat won by over four seconds! Throughout the season, we had many successful regattas and as a school, it was amazing to have three crews win gold at the annual Head of the Schoolgirls regatta, which was Korowa’s best result ever! Our Senior Firsts rowed at Nationals in Penrith and competed in competitive C finals in two events. Overall, every crew gave it their all over the whole season, and we are so proud of all their achievements.

It was great to see so many people giving snowsports a go this year, from our weekly training to the top of the racecourse there was a lot of enthusiasm. Despite less-than-ideal weather, the snow at the Trial Weekend was phenomenal, and it was wonderful to see everyone’s’ confidence grow with each run. From watching our parents attempt the course in the Parents’ Race, to enjoying lolly snakes and hot doughnuts after the trials, and building some truly impressive snowmen, we all had a great time. Race training was an excellent opportunity to ski or snowboard together with the rest of the team while learning useful tips to improve our speed and control. Well done everyone!
As the Swimming Captain, I’ve been fortunate to lead a group of talented girls whose accomplishments extend beyond the ribbons and medals. One of the biggest achievements has been the sense of unity we’ve built as a team. Swimming, often viewed as an individual sport, becomes a collective effort when we step onto the pool deck together, cheering each other on and celebrating every personal best and first-try effort. Watching swimmers progress from nervous beginners to excited competitors has been a privilege. Each swimmer’s growth, whether in setting a new personal best or qualifying for finals, is a shared victory that reflects our resilience, dedication and teamwork.
Beyond the competition, one of my most significant achievements has been fostering leadership and leaving a legacy for future teams. As Captain, I’ve worked to create an environment where every swimmer feels supported to step up, take responsibility and contribute to the team’s success. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see younger swimmers embrace the sport and help shape our positive and supportive atmosphere. Together, we are not just competing; we are building a foundation for future participation, establishing and ensuring that the spirit of GSV swimming remains strong. Ultimately, our team’s greatest achievement isn’t just measured by race results, but by the growth, unity and lifelong friendships.

This year, GSV Athletics saw outstanding enthusiasm and sportsmanship from all participants. Thanks to Ms Crowe’s support, trainings were held twice a week, with the team up early at 6.30am ready to sprint, jump, run and throw in preparation to compete in the GSV Preliminary and Championship Carnivals. It was great seeing everyone encourage each other to try new events and form bonds with other year levels. Seeing everyone’s hard work pay off was extremely rewarding and definitely was a season highlight for me. Overall, the season ended on a high note, leaving everyone excited for what next year will bring!

These outstanding results are the culmination of hard work, dedication and perseverance. This cohort will be greatly missed—they brought fun, school spirit, joy and connection to our community. I know their peers value those connections. As educators, we feel privileged to have been part of their journey and are excited to see them step into the future as young women ready to lead.
We strive to develop authentic, confident and strong individuals who lead with integrity and courage. The skills they have gained at Korowa—collaboration, resilience, and a commitment to doing what is right—will serve them well as they step into the world.
