Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This week has seen the first two of five parent-teacher-student evenings. Please be reminded that logging into the meeting must be done through your child’s school Gmail account. The code required is the teacher's initials and the student’s surname. This will not work unless the student’s Gmail account is used. Monday and Wednesday’s sessions were well received by all parties involved.

Last week the Year 11 Drama students staged two one-act plays; 'Bassett' by James Graham and 'Heritage' by Daffyd James at the Middle School Drama Studio directed by their teachers Will Hodgson and Chris Montgomery. Both plays featured outstanding acting skills from the current Year 11 Drama cohort. Students performed with total belief and conviction as they brought their characters to life. This was raw, urgent, and exhilarating theatre about young people dealing with the themes of war, terrorism, enforced Nationalism, conformity, and surveillance in today's post-9/11 world. Congratulations to all students involved!

Additional images can be viewed further in the Newsletter

The highlight of the week has been Reverie, the K - Year 11 Ballet. The grace, poise, beauty, and elegance of the more senior dancers were juxtaposed by the cuteness and endeavor by the Kindy and Year 1 students to make for a thoroughly enjoyable evening of dance. The coming together of both Primary and High School students in one production is also special, for the community it creates within the dance fraternity. Thank you to Delia Harrington for all the work that she put into choreographing and inspiring this showcase for our very talented ballet dancers.

The Music Department has been busy this week with an HSC string quartet workshop with the players from Quart-Ed. Each Year 12 Music student write their own quartet and this was the first opportunity for them to hear their works performed. They received feedback and great ideas for improvement from these players, which is enormously helpful. This was followed by all Year 10, Year 11, and Year 12 music students visiting the Opera House on Thursday night to hear Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto with the Sydney Symphony.

The fifty-four Year 7 and Year 8 students who are attending Space School in Houston in the July holiday were treated to a SPACE LIVE event on Wednesday direct from Houston. They were involved with a live broadcast to the United States to talk about all things space related to whet their appetite for their upcoming adventure.

1 - HSC string quartet workshop with the players from Quart-Ed. 2 - Senior music students visiting the Opera House to hear Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto with the Sydney Symphony.

Year 10, Year 11, and Year 12 students attended a Paul Dillon workshop as part of our Pastoral Care program. He has been working in the area of drug education for over 25 years and works with many school communities across the country, giving regular updates on current drug trends to ensure that students have access to good quality information and best practice drug education. This year he include vaping and its dangers as part of his presentation. For further information and reading please go to: www.darta.net.au

Educational Consultants from Robert Allwell and Associates conducted testing for all Year 10 students on Wednesday. These tests are designed to identify the full range of abilities of students and to gauge a student’s current level of achievement in numeracy and literacy. The assessment battery also includes a careers interest inventory component. As these students will be selecting their subjects for their HSC next term, these tests will also be a valuable tool in regard to subject selection. The results will highlight a student's aptitude in certain fields which will assist when choosing appropriate subjects for the HSC and future careers.

This week in Science, the Year 7 students were learning all about separation techniques. Some classes have put their skills to good use to distill a mixture, creating a beautiful perfume. Lots of florals, fruit & spices were added together to create the perfect blend of aromas. Just in time to present to their loving mothers for Mother’s Day.

Student achievements this week include:

Jasmine Spira (Y11)

Jazz Spira competed at the State Inter-schools Equestrian Competition in the holidays, jumping the highest level at 1.20m where she received 6th place. She also attended a national show in Queensland over the holidays. The classes were enormous with over 100 competitors in each class (big open classes

competing against professionals!). Whilst she did not place at this show, she did achieve a personal best, completing her first 1.25-1.30 height class. Incredibly brave Jazz.

Public Speaking

In Public Speaking our Reddam team was victorious for the second week and now are the official team sponsored by Rose Bay Rotary Club for the MUNA (Model United Nations) Competition. Congratulations to Hugo Bendeich, Jade Hastings, and Asher Lingam who were amazing.

Abby Sheary was invited to be a junior judge for the Russel Prize for Humour Writing, organised by the State Library of NSW. As this category includes books written specifically for children, it was decided to ask a panel of school children to be junior judges and let them decide which book from the shortlist is most deserving. Each judge was sent copies of the shortlisted books in mid-March. On April 26th the judges were invited to the State Library to meet and compare notes and ultimately make a decision as to which book is the winning book for the 2023 Russell Prize. Thank you Abby, for representing the school as a judge for this prestigious award.

See the link below for the webpage about the event/judging panel if interested.

To our Mothers and Significant Others have a happy Mother’s Day on Sunday and a great week ahead to all.

Year 12 Drama Camp

Year 12 HSC Drama students attended their Drama Camp last weekend at The Collaroy Centre. They participated in a circus skills workshop from Swoop Physical Theatre and watched 'The Stones' a play for young people produced by 'Shock Therapy theatre Company' that highlighted the importance of staging an engaging narrative through clear characters and transformational acting. Devising work was facilitated by their Drama teachers' Mr Hodgson and Mr Montgomery. The students produced some excellent performance work to kick start their Group Performances that will be presented to the HSC examiners in August. Congratulations to all the students for their outstanding commitment to the process.

BASSETT & HERITAGE - Year 11 Drama Production

Last week the Year 11 Drama students staged two one act plays; 'Bassett' by James Graham and 'Heritage' by Daffyd James at the Middle School Drama Studio directed by their teachers Will Hodgson and Chris Montgomery. Both plays featured outstanding acting skills from the current Year 11 Drama cohort. Students performed with total belief and conviction as they brought their characters to life. This was raw, urgent and exhilarating theatre about young people dealing with the themes of war, terrorism, enforced Nationalism, conformity and surveillance in today's post 9/11 world.

Congratulations to all students involved!

Although not all courses for 2024 are available now, students can choose any 2024 course to complete their application and come back later to review and change their preferences as courses are added. All semester 1, 2024 courses will be available by August.

Applications for international Year 12 students will open on Wednesday 19 April.

UAC PINs

Students received their UAC PIN this week. PIN emails were sent to the email address NESA or ACT BSSS has on file. Students should register a personal email address (rather than a school one) with NESA. They can do this by logging in to Students Online. This will mean they can still be contacted by UAC in December when they have left school.

How to apply for uni

Why apply through UAC?

We know that students are unsure about whether they should apply directly to an institution or through UAC, and to increase their chances many are doing both. Not all institutions accept direct applications from Year 12 students but it’s important for students considering a direct application to remember the following:

• A UAC application gives students five course preferences to choose; they don’t have to apply five times to five different institutions.

• Having a UAC application enables students to apply for Access and early entry schemes: EAS, SRS and Equity Scholarships.

• Having a UAC application as well as a direct application will give students more chance of securing an offer, so long as they don't enter the same preferences in both applications.

Our Law Admission Test (LAT) Plus Accelerator Program is designed to help students develop essential skills required to succeed in the LAT. The LAT Plus Accelerator equips students with the tools, advice, and confidence to succeed in the LAT.

The LAT Plus Accelerator is an interactive program which helps students develop strategies for deconstructing questions, solidify critical thinking skills, and hone persuasive writing abilities. We also provide strategies to succeed in the LAT and empower students to achieve their full potential.

We offer students an immersive experience where they will have the opportunity to ask live questions, partake in interactive exercises, complete practice papers, and receive live feedback during the Program. In addition, we offer further practice papers and complementary written feedback to help students continue refining their skills following the completion of the program.
