Weekend activities included:
The Music students of Years 9 and 10 attended the WOMADelaide Jazz Festival over the weekend, and Mrs. Wood reported that the students loved every minute of the experience. The teachers that accompanied them did as well.
The Reddam Mountain Biking Team competed at Thredbo in the Australian Schools Mountain Bike Racing. They did their school proud and had a fun, adrenaline-filled weekend away. Mick Maloney from Sydney Mountain Bike Hire, who runs our school’s program organized the entire weekend away, looking after everything, from flat bike tyres and mechanical issues to food and accommodation for the team and the dads that accompanied the team for the weekend.

On Tuesday, the first of the Middle School Seminar days was held to allow students to do required fieldwork and build on the concept that learning opportunities are all around us and not just limited to a classroom. Year 9 Geography students visited a dairy farm.
In contrast, the Year 9 History students viewed the film 12 Years a Slave as part of their learning experience on the movement of people and slavery in the United States.
Year 8 students visited the Jewish Museum for a cultural awareness and integration program. This program facilitates a broader understanding of multiculturalism within Australia.
The Year 7 students visited Watson’s Bay to observe and assess the features and characteristics of the Sydney Harbour coastal landscape and examine its landforms. They also participated in geographical fieldwork by actively interpreting graphs and maps.
All teachers accompanying the students reported that the day's aims were achieved and that the students had a great learning experience. I thank Ms. Dignan, Mr. Smith, Ms. Wolfson, and Mr. Wakley, who organised the various activities.

3 - Year 9 4 - Year 8
The Year 8, Year 9, and Year 10 Dance students were treated to an excursion to see 'Hairspray' at the Lyric Theatre on Wednesday, and the Year 11 and Year 12 students visited the Sydney Dance Company at the Opera House on Thursday. Seeing the dance, they work so hard towards in context is an uplifting and motivational experience for our dancers my thanks to Mrs. Collier-Walsh for creating these opportunities.
The Year 7 Debating team had their first win of the season against SCEGGS on Friday night, arguing that we should heavily invest in video games as a significant educational tool for the future. The Year 11 Team also convinced the judges they had a superior argument.
Good luck to all our debaters as they head into the third round this weekend.
NAPLAN for Year 7 and Year 9 students started this week and will continue next week. We wish them well as they navigate this national assessment for literacy and numeracy. Also held on Wednesday was this year's Prefect Social. The Year 12 Judiciary and Representing Reddam students host prefects from local schools to a networking and socialising evening. This year Zoe Topper, with the capable assistance of Joseph Glasson, Aidan Gruenpeter and Max Rubenstein, was responsible for marketing and advertising the eagerly anticipated event. Students attended for a fantastic evening of trivia, dinner and refreshments that was enjoyed by all. Mr Francis, the trivia master with a repertoire of interesting facts, and Mr Dalglish as their Year Coordinator, ensured the evening was a great success. Mr Cawse and I enjoyed seeing the pride in their school with which our students interact with the visiting prefects. After a warm day, the sunset on the Woollahra rooftop capped off a tremendously successful evening.
5 - Year 7
The 10R Science class was thrilled to welcome Lena Martins's mum, Dr. Inken Martin to our campus this week to share with us her current research into cardiomyopathy. All Year 10 students undertake a term of learning about Genetics and Evolution and to have an expert in the field of genetic mutations address our students was a privilege. Dr. Martin is a senior scientist at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute where she studies inherited forms of heart disease, specifically cardiomyopathy (weakness of the heart muscle leading to heart failure) and atrial fibrillation (rhythm disturbance of the heart). She
uses zebrafish animal models to understand the genetic basis of these inherited conditions and does, among other things, use genetic engineering to simulate human suspected disease-causing mutations in fish in order to find new treatment options. We cannot thank Dr. Inken enough for taking the time out of her busy schedule to inspire our students, and we look forward to her future visits.
To finish the week on a high, Judiciary, Charity Portfolio and Events Portfolio joined forces to raise money for the World's Greatest Shave | Leukaemia Foundation. Enticing all with the opportunity to shave the glorious silver locks of Mr Dalglish, a fantastic accumulation of donations exceeding $10,000 was raised. In addition to the fabulous work of the coordinators, special mention to our highest fund raisers Charles Wallace-Gebert (Y9), Toby Solsky (Y12), Max McDonald (Y12) and Jett Lim (Y12) as well as an increasing number of students who put their hands up to be shaved for a very worth charity.
Donations can still be made via the Reddam House WGS Donation Page.
6 - Charles Wallace-Gebert (Y9)
Student Achievements this week include:
Jasper Hartmann (Y9) is a finalist in the Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival Literary Art Prize. His “Plastic or Prey” artwork will be exhibited between Wednesday and Sunday at the Bondi Pavilion.
Janey Martin (Y8) was invited to show and speak to her 'reduce plastics' video at the Ocean Festival on Saturday at 12:45 down at Bondi Pavilion. Janey, a member of the Waverley Council Power to the Future Intergenerational Program on Climate Change, explores how soft plastics contribute to climate change and what the public can do to reduce plastic consumption.
7 - Mr Stewart Dalglish (Y12 Coordinator)

Joseph and Sophia Glasson (Y12 & Y10) won the Gold medals at the Australian Fencing Circuit over the weekend in the Senior Men's and Women's Foil categories, respectively. As a result, Joseph remains the No.1 ranked fencer in Senior Men's Foil in Australia and will represent Australia in the World Fencing Championships (Senior) in Italy. Sophia rises to No.4 in Senior Women's foil nationally and remains in the running to win her World Championships (Senior) spot.
8 - Joseph Glasson (Y12) - Senior Men's Foil GOLD medal at the Australian Fencing Circuit.
9 - Sophia Glasson (Y10) - Senior Women's Foil GOLD medal at the Australian Fencing Circuit.
Three Year 7 students were concerned that fellow students may not realise how important it is to understand that Reddam House students represent their school wherever they are in the community. To make this clearer, they designed this poster.
Have a wonderful weekend and week ahead,
Dave Pitcairn
10 - Jasper Hartmann (Y9) - finalist in the Litterarty Art Prize being displayed at the Bondi Pavilion.
Year 7 Seminar Day - Watson's Bay
Students from Year 7 had the opportunity to apply their knowledge of Landscapes and Landforms during their Seminar Day Trip to Watson's Bay. They were guided by wonderful Reddam Teachers and staff of Ranger Jamie Tours. All students had an enjoyable time in the outdoors and made the most of the wet and windy weather.
Year 8 Seminar Day - Jewish Museum
On Tuesday, Year 8 went to the Jewish Museum. This is a museum of information, objects, true stories and memories from the survivors of the Holocaust. When we first arrived, we went on a tour of the different displays and sections they offered. It was fascinating to be able to interact closely with each section of the museum and to ask our museum guide questions which were answered in depth. We saw bags that were taken on the trains to the concentration camps, photographs of families, legal documents and more.
We then listened to a Holocaust survivor, Judy Davis, give an amazing talk. She told her heart-wrenching story about her journey from Hungary to Sydney in 1956, which took over six weeks. She and her family fled as they would have been killed if they had stayed there. The whole year group was absolutely captivated. Hearing Judy’s story was so important, as we were given the opportunity to learn about a different perspective to more famous ones like Anne Frank. Her daughter was with us and shared a fun piece of information - that it was Judy’s birthday!
After that, an interactive presentation was given by one of the museum guides. We learned about superiority versus othering, the rise to power of the Nazis, and the importance and subtleties of propaganda.
I wholeheartedly enjoyed learning about each and every aspect of the museum and valued all the information it had to offer. It is an upsetting topic but of the utmost importance, and I am very grateful for the opportunity we were given. Every person - student or staff - who left the museum was brimming with new information and a newfound appreciation for people like Judy, who are generous enough to share their stories.

Year 9 Geography Seminar Day - Dairy Farm
On Tuesday, Year 9 Geography went on an excursion to Belgenny Farm. They learned about technology's role in the efficient management of a modern dairy farm. Then the students broke into groups where they all got to milk a cow and then use the same milk to make a range of dairy products, including butter, cream, ricotta, and feta cheese. There was also the opportunity to learn about the nutritional content of different kinds of milk, yogurts, and cheeses and then to sample them and guess which product was which. It was a great learning opportunity and a welcome chance to be out of the city and surrounded by nature.
Year 9 History Seminar Day"12 Years A Slave"
The Year 9 History cohort recently viewed the film "12 Years a Slave" as part of their learning experience on the movement of people and slavery in the United States.
The film tells the story of Solomon Northup, a free Black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the 19th century. Through his journey, the students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the harsh realities of slavery and the inhumane treatment of enslaved people.
The film also provided a means for students to contextualize their recently completed investigations, and the impact the industrial revolution had on American society today. By exploring the history of slavery, students can gain a more nuanced understanding of the complex issues that continue to affect people of color today and the development of our modern world.
Our hope is that this film, and the accompanying discussions and unit of work, encourages students to engage critically with history and to consider the impact of historical events on contemporary society. We are proud of our students' engagement with this important topic and their commitment to learning.
Dance Excursion
This week Dance students from Year 8-12 immersed themselves in live theatre, leaving them entertained and inspired.
On Wednesday 15th March, our Year 8-10 dancers travelled to the Lyric Theatre to see the musical, 'Hairspray' . An expert production design, incorporating costumes, lighting and sets, accompanied outstanding singing and dancing from the performers to bring to the audience a story that shared important lessons about inclusivity, equality and being proud of who you are, just as you are. The experience of watching the show allowed our students to appreciate how the performing arts can be used to tackle universal issues in an entertaining way, as well as gain a deeper understanding of the musical theatre style.
On Thursday 16th March, Senior Dance students visited the Sydney Opera House to see Sydney Dance Company's latest production, 'Ascent'. This double bill included a new piece by Rafael Bonachela and the award winning work, 'Forever and Ever' by Antony Hamilton. Both performances displayed the outstanding technical skill of the performers and their unshakeable dedication to their craft. The experience also included a Q& A session and presentations from Rafael Bonachela (Artistic Director of SDC), Rehearsal Directors, Company dancers and the Production and Wardrobe Departments where they discussed their creative processes and provided a behind the scenes look into what it takes to mount a professional production onstage. This was a particularly special event as the performance also celebrated the Opera House's 50th birthday.
WOMADelaide World Music Festival
Last weekend, 40 Year 9 and 10 Music students attended the WOMADelaide World Music festival from Saturday to Monday, accompanied by Mrs Wood, Ms Eckardt, Mr O'Mahony and Ms Houlahan. Set in Adelaide's Botanic Park, this festival highlights the diversity and richness of world music, featuring
eclectic sounds of cultural music from Africa, Korea, Columbia, Morocco, Ukraine, Germany and Australia just to name a few.
For many students, this was the first time they'd attended a music festival. With its vibrant family atmosphere and chance to try exotic foods, participate in dance and music workshops and build lasting memories with fellow students from the music cohort, the experience was not only a great source of enjoyment for the students but also a valuable educational and multicultural experience as they enriched their study of World Music. The teachers reported that despite this being the biggest group taken on this annual trip to date and also the record crowd numbers attending the festival this year, the students demonstrated maturity, respect, cooperation and excellent team work as they moved around in groups, proactively attending as many shows as they could each day. Many even met some of the performers after the performances, collecting autographs and purchasing merchandise to commemorate their trip. Overall, the WOMADelaide trip was a huge success yet again and we're pleased to be able to offer an experience that broadens students' perspective on the world and fosters a love of live music in the younger generations.

Instrumental Competition 2023
Our 2023 Instrumental Competition entries are open. Of course, very few students would have a piece ready this early in the year, so this announcement serves as motivation and planning assistance for preparing an entry by the May deadline. All students are encouraged to take the term and school holidays to work on the piece of their choice, with their teachers, and submit an entry into this online competition. All students receive written feedback, as well as RHAP points. We look forward to watching and celebrating our students' work, and you can enter as well as read more at this link: REGISTRATION
Guitar Workshops
Ms Deb Yap, a talented professional guitarist who has been seen on major Australian stages and is performing in our production of Footloose, has continued her guitar masterclasses and workshops this week. Last week Ms Yap began holding guitar masterclass/workshops at both the Woollahra and Bondi campuses. Many of our guitarists came to learn and soak up Ms Yap's expertise, and present pieces that were either works in progress, ensemble music, or finished repertoire. These were supportive and encouraging sessions, with all guitarists given helpful tips and feedback on their playing. We are all appreciating Ms Yap's continued involvement.

SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY
MySydney Entry & Scholarship Scheme
The E12 Early Offer and Scholarship Scheme is being discontinued as the University has introduced MySydney. Similarly to E12, MySydney provides entry at a reduced ATAR, yet a more generous scholarship of $8500 per year to students residing in a low socioeconomic area*. MySydney does not require a written application and eligible students will be identified automatically via UAC.
*Residing at the time of UAC application in an area listed in the bottom 25% of the Australian Bureau of Statistics Socio-Economic Index for Areas (SEIFA), Index of Education and Occupation.
Scholarships
The decision was made to discontinue the Sydney Scholars Award. With such a large volume of applications each year, far outweighing the number of Awards available to students, it was decided it was not fair for students to be spending so much time on their applications as such a crucial time of year. In preparation for the change, the Chancellor’s Award was recently expanded to include students who received a 99.90 ATAR (previously awarded to 99.95 only). This cohort accounted for a large number of the Sydney Scholars Awards historically given to students. Preliminary 2023 offer and enrolment numbers also show that more students who achieved an ATAR of 95.00+ received the University’s new MySydney Scholarship, than those who received the Sydney Scholars Award.
There continues to be many academic merit scholarships available at a faculty level which we encourage students to apply for. The scholarships search tool will help students discover the range of scholarships that they may be eligible for.

UAC- 2024 ADMISSIONS
Applications for the current Year 12 group will open on 5 April. UAC will email all NSW and ACT students their UAC PIN on the same day. Students from other states will use their date of birth as their PIN but will be unable to apply until later in the year when we have received student data from our interstate partners.
Applications for our Access schemes will also open on the 5 April.
This year's UAC Guide is set to be delivered to schools early in Term 2, followed by Steps to Uni for Year 10 Students and the Scaling Report for the 2022 HSC.
Schools Recommendation Scheme
There are no changes to the SRS process this year. However, the University of Sydney E12 and UNSW Gateway schemes will not be part of SRS in 2023. I am sure you will receive information about these schemes very soon, if you haven't already.
Educational Access Scheme
There are several changes to EAS this year:
The six-month rule has been removed. Applications will be assessed for disadvantages that have occurred for any length of time up until 30 September of the year they complete Year 12.
Disadvantage codes F01K and F01S, which allowed students to claim financial disadvantage based on COVID-19 government payments, have been removed.
There is a new SEIFA disadvantage code, AG02, which works in the same way as AG01 but draws on the Australian Bureau of Statistics Index of Education and Occupation instead of the Index of Relative Socioeconomic Advantage and Disadvantage. The day after they submit their application, students identified as meeting the criteria for either of these disadvantages will be notified that UAC has automatically created an EAS application for them.
The student's document cover sheet will include a checklist to help them understand what they need to provide.
The Educational Impact Statement will require schools to answer fewer questions, making it a quicker and easier process for you.
UAC - will also host another online Year 12 Conference. Last year, 3,500 students and parents logged in to watch, making it the biggest UAC Digital event to date. When: 28 April @ 6pm. Registrations will open soon and details will be announced when available.
