HERO TO HOMEOWNER: U.S. ARMY STAFF SERGEANT CHARLES DICKSON
On November 5, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Charles “Chuck” Dickson became the most recent recipient of a mortgage-free home through Freedom Alliance, presented in conjunction with Ashlar Homes and U.S. Bank. In addition to the new home, Ashlar Homes had the privilege to pick out new furniture to furnish the living room and kitchen. The program honors heroic military service by providing stability to military families who have consistently transferred from one duty station to another over many years. The home gives comfort to a warrior who previously slept in tents and foxholes and traveled to the most remote and dangerous areas of the world. All recipients are combat veterans who deployed post 9/11/2001 in support of the Global War on Terror.
In 1993, Chuck deployed to Mogadishu, Somalia, surviving an anti-tank mine explosion just days before the “Black Hawk Down” incident. The following year, he served in Haiti and at Guantanamo Bay, assisting with the Haitian and Cuban refugee crisis. He then deployed to Kosovo and then spent two years in Izmir, Turkey, working in a NATO facility. He was stationed in Germany from 2000 to 2004, followed by two rotations in Kabul, Afghanistan, then Tal Afar, Iraq, and later Ramadi as part of the surge. He earned the Combat Action Badge following a mortar attack and survived a devastating vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) explosion. He retired in 2012 with more than 20 years of honorable service. Chuck has spoken openly about the lasting effects of combat and his experiences with PTSD. He and his wife, Lisa and their 5-year-old son, Levi, look forward to a fresh start in their new Blue Springs home.
