HEAD’S WELCOME

Schools should always be a source of hope and promise for the future, and guiding pupils in schools is both a privilege and a challenge.

Working to support and guide young children and adolescents through what seems an increasingly uncertain world is a truly important vocation, carrying great responsibility and accountability. For those of us who choose to take on this challenge, witnessing the development and flourishing of young people is the greatest reward.

Ours is a community which believes in learning for all, learning for life and learning in a fuller sense than just academically. For our pupils, this means that whilst examination success and demonstrable academic progress is valued, so too is the personal growth and character development gained through co-curricular activity, but also opportunities to support and lead others and to undertake community service.

Pastoral care and education, and knowing all of our pupils well in our inclusive community, underpins all that we do. For our staff, learning is key too, through opportunities for career development and continuing professional development of high frequency and measurable value.

Success in life is measured in many different ways, most obviously by gold medals and examination results. Our community is rightly proud of our Olympic heritage in sport and the excellent achievements of our pupils at both GCSE and A level, but we also recognise that success for each individual means different things. We support our pupils in testing themselves in and beyond the classroom, and value resilience, teamwork, perseverance and service as much as we do raw attainment.

Ultimately, how our pupils are as people and how they build relationships with others will be of more importance to them, and to society, than how talented they are. Our community thrives in supporting both those who display excellence and those who struggle; it thrives in the development of academic and emotional intelligence and literacy, and in enhancing in our leavers a sense of

their responsibility for themselves and their own actions, to others and to their environment and in creating a more compassionate and aware global community.

As you explore our prospectus, we hope it gives you a flavour of the vibrant daily life of Plymouth College. We invite you to visit us in person; a chance for you to experience first hand the nurturing relationships, holistic education, and limitless possibilities that define our community.

To find out more and experience this in person, please do come to visit us. I look forward to meeting you.

OUR SCHOOL

Plymouth College is an outstanding co-educational day and boarding school situated in the heart of Plymouth.

We have been providing an excellent education to pupils from Plymouth, all over the UK and around the world since we were founded in 1877.

Throughout our history, we have retained our reputation for excellence in education and we are proud of the standards, the values and the aspirations suggested by this history, underpinned by our motto, Dat Deus Incrementum (God Gives The Increase).

We are acutely aware that all our pupils will need the skills and attributes to thrive in an ever more competitive world. Our pupils exceed their potential and achieve impressive exam results gaining them places at Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell group and world-leading universities. But academic results alone do not prepare young people for life beyond school.

Our pupils, with our support and guidance, develop strong communication skills, the ability to lead and work with others and above all, they develop self-confidence - feeling that, with hard work and determination, anything can be achieved. The emphasis of Plymouth College is very much on what our pupils can do well, and ensuring that they emerge as happy, confident, grounded and well-balanced young people.

In addition, they will take with them the lifelong friendships developed in our safe environment that values their emotional wellbeing as much as their personal development and academic performance. New pupils are encouraged not only by the staff but also by their peers, which creates a really strong sense of community.

OUR COASTAL LOCATION

Plymouth, a vibrant waterfront city with a rich maritime legacy, serves as an exceptional base for exploration and learning. Known as Britain’s Ocean City, it boasts a bustling centre and is renowned for its contributions to marine science, industry and education. The city itself offers a dynamic atmosphere, blending historical significance with modern amenities. Plymouth provides a diverse and engaging environment for Plymouth College pupils and their families.

Our coastal location is central to our school’s identity. From outdoor education adventures and field trips, to our distinctive Ocean Curriculum, we ensure pupils make the most of everything that the South Coast has to offer.

OUR VALUES OUR VISION

The world of work is changing at a fast pace and the speed of this process is only going to accelerate. Many jobs, including professional ones, are being automated, whilst new roles and responsibilities are being created.

We strive to uncover what this rapidly changing world means for young people today. It is an invitation to all members of the current and future Plymouth College community to work together as we seek to reinforce and develop the best possible education; an education that is preparing pupils to be strong and resilient yet flexible and thoroughly engaged.

While academic achievements and results will always provide a necessary foundation, that may not be sufficient in an increasingly competitive job market. Therefore, it is vital that young people develop the skills and attributes employers require. Skills such as creativity, problem solving, leadership and resilience are key aspects of this and can be developed through a traditional range of academic and extra-curricular opportunities. However, we believe that schools can do more.

We would like our pupils to develop these vital characteristics in a more tangible way, through coaching and mentoring programmes that extend throughout their school life with us. We build our distinctive ethos into the very fabric of lessons as well as extra-curricular activities, by combining our crucial, long-standing commitment to traditional educational values with carefully and appropriately selected ideas from the latest research.

A modern education with a focus on the individual is something we are passionate about delivering from Pre-School into the Sixth Form. Pupils flourish when they enjoy their education, whilst discovering and developing individual talents and exploring new skills.

ASPIRATION

We foster ambition, hope, confidence and selfmotivation in all our pupils. Aiming high is the Plymouth College way.

INTEGRITY

We expect our pupils to act with integrity and encourage them to stay true to themselves, remaining truthful and having strong moral and ethical principles.

KINDNESS

We uphold our community to be considerate of others, welcoming of new people, being friendly and showing support and compassion to our peers.

RESPECT

We expect our pupils to have respect for others, the environment, other cultures, British Values, and to be tolerant of difference.

RESILIENCE

We teach our pupils not to let failure drain resolve and to overcome difficulties. Perseverance, tenacity, courage and commitment are all encouraged.

SERVICE

“Pupils throughout the School are proud of what they achieve and speak with great passion about their experiences, both in and out of the classroom.”

We pride ourselves on having a culture of serving others, rather than self-service. We praise those, who through kindness and compassion, put the feelings of others first.

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Boarding has been a vibrant and integral part of Plymouth College since 1877, and it continues to thrive in the elegant Victorian buildings called Colson House and Mannamead House. We replicate the best qualities of family life and endeavour to create a close-knit community where life-long friendships are formed.

Conveniently situated both physically and metaphorically right at the heart of the site, our boarding community is small enough to enjoy a supportive, family atmosphere from which young people can explore the richness of the wider school. Significant investment has allowed us to provide an excellent modern environment within which to live and work. Younger boarders share a bedroom with no more than two others, while seniors have twin or single bedrooms.

There are comfortable, well-equipped social areas, well-stocked kitchen areas to supplement the excellent school dining, calm work areas, and safe, restful bedrooms. Led by the Head of Boarding, there is a team of specialist staff dedicated to ensuring the highest possible quality of supervision at all hours

of the day and night. Pupils are strongly encouraged to immerse themselves in boarding life and contribute to the community through taking on responsibility, sharing their talents and helping one another.

A diverse cultural and extra-curricular programme is offered to all boarding pupils. These range from educational trips and house events, to soirees and recreational outings. Whilst recognising the value of taking time out for quiet contemplation or pure relaxation, our weekends are varied and purposeful. Former boarders who return to visit us often say that the boarding houses provided them with an invaluable and unique experience that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Plymouth College Prep School is no exception and we are immensely proud of the part we play in nurturing young minds during their formative years. Values, standards and expectations remain high on the list of priorities, alongside mutual care and respect.

EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE

Children from the age of 3 will be welcomed by our experienced and dedicated team who foster a warm and nurturing atmosphere, helping children build confidence as they embark on their educational journey. Our philosophy centres on learning through play, exploration, and hands-on experiences, which we believe are the fundamental building blocks for fostering a lifelong passion for learning.

PREP SCHOOL

From an early age, we nurture genuine self-confidence in our pupils, fostering an environment where they feel supported, encouraged, and empowered to embrace new experiences.

Our small class sizes and dedicated specialist staff ensure that every child receives the individual attention they need to thrive. Specialist Senior School staff are available to

enhance the excellent teaching of the Prep School class teachers as the Prep School pupils become more inquisitive with age.

Prep School pupils regularly benefit from our wide range of facilities, including our indoor swimming pool, astroturf, science labs, art studio and music rooms.

A positive home-school relationship really does help to support and enhance what happens in the classroom and we work hard to ensure this remains a real strength of our provision.

CO-CURRICULAR

All pupils, from Reception to Year 6, benefit from a weekly swimming lesson, helping them develop essential water safety skills and confidence in the pool.

From Year 3 onwards, pupils have the opportunity to compete in sports fixtures against other schools, in sports such as Hockey, Rugby, Netball, Football, Cricket, and Athletics.

A wide range of clubs and activities take place during lunchtimes and after school, as well as instrument lessons, speech and drama lessons and outdoor education opportunities.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Our Senior School provides a vibrant and supportive environment where pupils aged 11 to 16 embark on a significant phase of their educational and personal development. We are dedicated to fostering intellectual curiosity, academic excellence and strong personal values.

Across these formative years, pupils are encouraged to explore a wide array of subjects, develop new skills through diverse co-curricular activities and prepare thoughtfully for their future pathways. We aim to nurture well-rounded individuals, ready to contribute positively to the world, supported by dedicated staff and a strong community ethos that underpins every aspect of Senior School life.

CURRICULUM

Our Senior Curriculum is thoughtfully structured to provide both breadth and depth from Year 7 through to Year 11. In Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9), pupils explore a wide range of subjects, with gentle academic streaming introduced after an initial settling period, allowing for tailored support.

As they progress to Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11), studies become more focused

towards GCSE and IGCSE examinations, with a core curriculum complemented by diverse optional subjects. Small class sizes ensure personalised attention and we also offer a dedicated pre-Sixth Form course for international pupils, ensuring a robust academic foundation for all.

CO-CURRICULAR

Beyond academics, our extensive cocurricular programme offers pupils countless opportunities for growth, teamwork and enjoyment. Whether pursuing The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, engaging in adventurous Outdoor Education challenges like Ten Tors or the River Dart Source to Sea, or expressing creativity through our vibrant Music, Drama, Art and Design Technology offerings, there is something to ignite every interest.

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) also provides a unique platform for developing leadership and self-reliance. These activities are integral to a balanced education, helping pupils discover new talents and build essential life skills in a supportive setting.

GCSE SUBJECTS

All pupils study:

English Language

English Literature

Mathematics

Biology, Chemistry and Physics (taken as three separate GCSEs or as a combined science award worth two GCSEs)

A choice of four optional subjects are chosen. Please view our website for a full list of subjects we offer.

The GCSE and IGCSE examinations in most subjects are taken at the end of Year 11, although there are occasional opportunities for pupils to take exams early in Year 10. A one year pre-Sixth Form course is available for Year 11 international pupils to prepare to start A Levels or the Sport Baccalaureate one year later. They study alongside the other Year 11 pupils in subjects such as Mathematics, English and the sciences. There are also other bespoke lessons provided in the humanities and foreign languages. This programme enables the pupils to take a range of GCSE qualifications after just one year. This course can be tailored to the individual needs of each pupil, with extra support lessons available, if required.

The options systems in Years 10 and 11 are redesigned each year to accommodate all pupils’ preferred choices as far as is possible.

SIXTH FORM

In the Sixth Form, community forms the bedrock of everything we do. Our inclusive environment celebrates individuality, empowering pupils to take ownership of their journey and thrive in a diverse community.

Academically, we encourage pupils to make the most of the comprehensive support provided by both our pastoral and academic teams, giving them the tools to take charge of their own learning. Our broad curriculum caters to a wide range of interests, offering subjects from academics to creative and athletic disciplines. Whatever your passion, there is a place for you here at Plymouth College Sixth Form.

Outside the classroom we want pupils to seize the myriad of opportunities for personal growth and development. This may be through attending clubs you have never tried before, being a Lead Prefect in charge of things such as charity events, organising socials, Sports Spirit, academic development and promotion; or it may be through delivering a Grand Round presentation to members of the school community, supporting younger pupils in their academics, or doing break and lunchtime duties around site. Whatever your self-confidence level, there is something for you to try.

UNIVERSITY AND CAREERS ADVICE

We have a well-equipped careers department, with a wide variety of information available. Sixth Form pupils have dedicated days where they can learn more about the UCAS process, different careers, interview techniques and CV writing. An annual Careers Fair provides many opportunities for pupils to meet with different universities and professionals from a variety of diverse career fields.

All Sixth Form pupils are strongly supported in developing their post-18 plans, building on the work done by Heads of Year lower down the school. Pupils use STAR and Unifrog for impartial career advice. The majority successfully apply to UK universities through UCAS. Preparation for this starts early and includes whole year group and individual guidance sessions; a visit to a UCAS convention; an interview skills workshop and practice interviews.

Additional, tailored support is provided for Oxbridge candidates and those looking to study medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. Work experience can also be undertaken with support from a growing network of contacts. Support is also given to those seeking to undertake apprenticeship schemes, including those at degree level.

Athletes benefit from individualised training programmes in our modern, open-plan and well-equipped Strength & Conditioning gym, to maximise their athletic potential.

INDIVIDUAL SPORTS

FENCING

Our Fencing programme is recognised as one of the leading programmes in the UK. Our athletes have achieved outstanding success, winning over 50 national titles and earning numerous medals. Impressively, over twenty of our pupils have gone on to represent their countries on the international stage in fencing.

DIVING

Our school is a recognised centre of excellence for diving, working in close partnership with the world-renowned Plymouth Diving Club. Our tailored academic programmes support national and international divers in balancing their studies with intensive training.

Based at the world-class Plymouth Life Centre, the club develops talent from beginner to elite level, including Olympic medallist and former pupil Tom Daley.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE RUGBY

For over two decades, our fifteens and sevens rugby teams have been recognised among the country’s most consistent performers and a significant force in the South West. We have a proud history of producing international players at U18 and U16 levels, with alumni like Henry Slade, a current England International and Exeter Chiefs’ star, and Paul Ackford, who represented England and the British Lions. Many former pupils achieve representative honours and play for major clubs.

Each team, from U12 to the 1st XV, benefits from experienced coaches and we field six teams, ensuring high participation. The senior programme incorporates strength and conditioning, skills training, matchplay and nutrition, aiming to help players achieve their highest potential. Our fixture list includes leading South West schools and tours, while junior teams compete in county cups and national competitions, all within an inclusive environment that welcomes players of all abilities.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE NETBALL

Netball at Plymouth College continues to flourish, with participation and success growing year on year. The club operates all year round, with dedicated squads for each year group training regularly. Our programme is expertly coached by Mrs Riley Harling, who brings a wealth of knowledge to our pupils through her previous county and Regional League 1 experience . Player development is further enhanced by our strength and conditioning coaches, who focus on fundamental movement patterns specific to netball, aiming to improve performance and reduce injury risks. Many of our pupils also play for the local Firebirds Netball Club, which trains at the College, providing additional coaching and playing opportunities. Successful tours, like a recent senior trip to South Africa and international experiences for junior teams, further enrich our netballers’ development.

GIRLS’ HOCKEY

Our Girls’ Hockey squads have achieved considerable success, with pupils regularly gaining representative honours for Devon, West Panthers, Performance Centre and UK Lions. National success has been achieved, including winning Tier 2 National Championships.

The programme is led by our Director of Hockey, Simon Fenwick, who holds an England Hockey Advanced Coaching Programme Certificate. Hockey is primarily played in the Autumn Term with Saturday block fixtures against other South West independent schools, mid-week local games and participation in England Hockey Schools Championships.

Training takes place on our school astro turf pitch at Ford Park, as well regularly on astro at Plymouth Marjon University.

CRICKET

Cricket at Plymouth College is a comprehensive, year-round programme built on high-quality coaching, a very strong senior fixture card and clear pathways to the professional game via District, County, University Centres of Excellence and First Class cricket. We have a history of successful overseas tours to destinations like Sri Lanka and South Africa with development squads, providing invaluable experience.

At junior level, the school consistently produces county representatives and engages actively with county programmes. A longstanding one-to-one Saturday coaching programme provides highly specialist, individualised coaching from Level 3 coaches. The winter programme also incorporates strength & conditioning with tactical input. Numerous alumni, such as Jake Libby (Worcestershire/Nottinghamshire CCC) and James Burke (Surrey CCC & England U19), have progressed to professional and high-level county cricket.

AQUATICS

Plymouth College Aquatics is a nationally acclaimed Performance Swimming Programme, attracting dedicated young athletes from across the UK and internationally. We provide a unique environment where intensive, highlevel swim training is seamlessly integrated with a first-class academic education, ensuring neither is compromised. Pupils can achieve their full potential both in their studies and as competitive swimmers.

Our mission is to develop the most wellrounded athletes we possibly can. This includes an array of qualities in addition to performance in the pool. For example, we would like to work with athletes willing and capable of entering a variety of events and distances. We aim to develop versatile, hardworking and dedicated swimmers that, when they decide to move on from Plymouth College, will take with them all the necessary prerequisites for success beyond their school years.

COACHING AND FACILITIES

Director of Swimming Roberto Pavoni was formerly an Olympian himself, competing at the London 2012 Olympics in the 400m Individual Medley and the 200m Butterfly. He is supported by a Deputy Director of swimming, a Lead Swim Coach and a full S&C team.

Our swimmers benefit from access to exceptional training facilities. This includes the 10-lane 50m and 6-lane 25m pools at the Plymouth Life Centre, and our own 5-lane 25m pool on the school site. This extensive access underpins a comprehensive training schedule.

The programme offers 30 hours of highperformance swimming each week, strategically spread across 12 sessions held before, during and immediately after the school day. An additional 90 hours of swimming across the year complements this, creating one of the UK’s most thorough pool programmes. Essential land-based strength and conditioning work takes place in our on-site suite.

ATHLETE SUPPORT

We provide an unparalleled, holistic support system tailored to the needs of high-performing young swimmers. This includes comfortable boarding accommodation and carefully planned nutrition designed to fuel athletic performance and recovery. Our extensive support staff features specialists in strength and conditioning, sports nutrition, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, sports psychology and sports science, all dedicated to optimising each pupil’s development.

Furthermore, our flexible learning programmes are a cornerstone of this support. They are specifically designed to accommodate demanding training schedules, allowing athletes to manage their academic studies at a pace that complements their commitments in the pool, ensuring they can flourish in all areas.

To support aspiring athletes, bursaries and swimming scholarships may be available and are considered on an individual basis, helping make this exceptional opportunity accessible.

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE FOOTBALL

Launched in September 2025, our HighPerformance Football Programme, delivered in partnership with Plymouth Argyle Football Club, offers a unique pathway for talented young footballers to pursue their sporting ambitions alongside academic excellence.

ELITE COACHING AT A PREMIER FACILITY

Through this exciting collaboration, pupils benefit from elite coaching by UEFA-licensed professionals at Argyle’s cutting-edge academy training facility at Foulston Park. This programme is designed to support those with the potential to excel in football, providing a clear route into the professional game while ensuring a strong academic foundation.

BALANCING SPORT AND STUDY

At Plymouth College, we believe in developing well-rounded individuals. Alongside football training, pupils receive a first-class education, supported by a tailored curriculum that balances the demands of

sport and study. This dual approach allows pupils to thrive, on the pitch and in the classroom.

BUILDING ON A LEGACY OF SUCCESS

The partnership builds on a proud legacy of success, with notable alumni including former Argyle goalkeeper Michael Cooper and current club owner Simon Hallett. Pupils joining the programme benefit from an inspiring environment that combines tradition, ambition, and opportunity.

EXCEPTIONAL PASTORAL SUPPORT

Pastoral care lies at the heart of the programme. We are committed to nurturing every pupil’s personal development, providing the guidance and support they need to grow in confidence, resilience, and character.

Our High-Performance Football Programme offers more than just exceptional coaching, it delivers an education for life.

THE ARTS

Creativity flourishes at our school through our dynamic Music, Drama, Art and Design Technology departments. Pupils explore passions, hone talents and express themselves through a wealth of exciting opportunities, performances and practical experiences.

MUSIC

The core of the Music department is a strong curriculum where pupils learn to sing, play keyboards, compose with music processing software, improvise and to listen analytically and evaluatively. The emphasis in our Music department is on enjoyment and involvement for all.

We have three school choirs, a school orchestra, individual harmony clubs for girls’ and boys’ voices, a string ensemble and a classical guitar ensemble, supplemented by one-to-one and small group theory tuition classes. Pupils have had the once in a lifetime opportunity to perform at prestigious venues such as the Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. There are also Music Scholars’ evenings, where the pupils who have committed to leading the musical life of the school share their work in progress.

ART

The Art department gives pupils the opportunity to practise or study a deeply rewarding subject, which will take them far beyond the narrow confines of any exam specification, and that will in time become an interest for life. We teach, from entry level, a traditional approach to art and pupils are given a strong grounding in the basic skills of observational drawing. As pupils develop as creative individuals they will be exposed to a wide range of art from the beginnings of recorded history through to the present day.

DRAMA

We pride ourself on the inclusive nature and professional quality of our school productions, performing Bugsy Malone, Shrek and Grease in recent years.

Whether academic or extra-curricular, pupils are encouraged to explore a wide range of theatrical styles; from the spectacular whole school musical to performance evenings and participation in local drama festivals.

We are very lucky to have access to the Theatre Royal, and pupils regularly experience cutting-edge live theatre. Trips further afield have included Bristol, Cheltenham, London and The Minack. Pupils partake in practical workshops with well-respected theatre practitioners including Frantic Assembly, The Paper Birds and Told by An Idiot. Encouraging pupils to see the study of drama and theatre as a valuable tool, whose worth extends beyond the classroom walls.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

At Plymouth College, we believe that extracurricular activities are central to the allround development of our pupils and we aim to provide as many opportunities as possible for pupils to enrich their lives both inside and outside school. We are immensely proud of our Outdoor Education programme that encourages our pupils to get out there, get stuck in, give it a go and above all - have fun!

Outdoor Education offers something for everyone, and for some people it is everything. Outdoor Education enriches the lives of our pupils by allowing them to discover their own boundaries, comfort zones and find their place in the world.

Developing the much sought-after ‘soft skills’ of leadership, collaboration, resilience and perseverance, we see the co-curricular life of school as not merely being about enjoyment and participation, but as an important

mechanism by which our pupils can be equipped to make an impact on the world at large.

It is about challenge, it is about determination. It is about the rich reward of hard work and the ability to bounce back when you fall down. It is, above all else, about ensuring that all pupils are nurtured and encouraged during their time with us, and can develop interests, passions, skills and values that will stay with them long after they leave the school gates as they enter the world beyond.

Situated in the South West, Plymouth benefits from the moors and sea, providing exceptional opportunities for days out. We access superb climbing and biking locations and some of the finest kayaking rivers. We also organise trips to other UK areas for breathtaking mountain scenery or premier caving adventures, making the most of all environments.

COMBINED CADET FORCE

The CCF aim is to enable the development of personal responsibility, leadership and self-discipline. Each CCF is an educational partnership between the school and the Ministry of Defence. Plymouth College CCF has Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force sections.

CCF units in schools give young people the life skills and self-confidence to take charge of their lives so they can reach their full potential at school and beyond, including in employment.

Each section engages in their own service training and all cadets can participate in a wider range of adventurous activities including flying, gliding, sailing, shooting. As part of the national CCF community there are opportunities to attend all forms of cadet activities both in the UK and overseas.

The CCF is for Year 10s and above. It is not compulsory, but any cadet who joins is required to maintain the standards expected when wearing uniform. The CCF staff is made up of volunteers, ex regular personnel, currently serving reservists and school staff. This depth of knowledge and experience gives the cadets the support required if they later apply for military scholarships or bursaries.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD

Our school runs all three levels of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award; Bronze, Silver and Gold.

It is a fantastic, pupil-driven opportunity which can be a key differentiator in interviews for university and jobs in life beyond school.

We are fortunate to have time set aside for this in the school timetable and on Friday afternoons we support pupils with their Award. Broadly, the Award requires young people to participate, for one hour a week, in a skill, volunteering and physical activity. We find that many of our pupils already complete at least two of these activities, and are able to slot a third into their schedule. Friday afternoons are given over to supporting pupils through the administration of the award, and training them for their expedition.

For Bronze, pupils either journey on the South West Coast Path, or head to Exmoor to tackle Dunkery Beacon. Silver pupils head to the Brecon Beacons for their expedition and for Gold we open up the possibility of biking, canoeing or sea kayaking alongside walking expeditions. In the past Gold expeditions have headed to the Lake District, the Netherlands and the river Wye. Expeditions are usually run in the holidays, and Gold pupils also need to undertake a five day, four night residential.

WELLBEING AND PASTORAL CARE

At Plymouth College, we recognise that academic and pastoral needs are inseparable. We know that only happy pupils reach their full potential and perform well academically, so great care and support are given to ensure that all pupils have a positive experience and look forward to each day at school. With high levels of academic and pastoral monitoring, alongside small class sizes, every child’s journey through the school is closely observed and, should any concerns arise, they are dealt with promptly and effectively. Pupils are organized into tutor groups according to their year group, with specialist bespoke tutoring incorporating PHSE, RSE and careers guidance.

HOUSE SYSTEM

The House system is at the heart of school life and offers another sense of belonging to each pupil, as well as an opportunity to showcase talents against other houses in the many House competitions. This vertical system, with pupils represented from each year group, really helps to promote leaders and as pupils progress through the school, they are encouraged to become positive role models and leaders for the younger years.

Chaytors Dales Sargents Palmers

WELLBEING HUB

Plymouth College offers excellent healthcare facilities and our health centre (open daily) is run by a qualified, registered nurse. The health centre is linked to a local GP Surgery to provide our boarding pupils with on-site visits by a doctor. The school employs its own independent counsellor, so that pupils may access support on-site during the school day. Healthy eating is also promoted as part of our holistic approach to wellbeing. We are proud to be in a catering partnership with Lodestone House who provide an excellent service. They cater for elite athletes, those with allergies and intolerances, cultural diets and hold regular food forums with the pupils.

SEND SUPPORT

We are deeply committed to supporting pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), recognising and celebrating the unique strengths, talents and qualities each individual brings to our community.

We offer a range of tailored support programmes and interventions designed to meet the individual needs of our pupils. The SENCO provides screening for dyslexia and other learning difficulties, allowing us to identify potential needs early and put appropriate support in place. The SEND team also offers guidance and signposting for families seeking formal diagnoses of SEND through our strong partnerships with external agencies. Our goal is to provide every pupil with the tools and understanding they need to thrive.

FACILITIES

SPORTS CENTRE

Our sports centre offers outstanding facilities designed to support both recreational and high-performance sport. On campus, pupils have access to a 25-metre short course swimming pool, a fully equipped cardiovascular fitness suite, a multi-purpose sports hall, cricket square, fencing suite and modern showers and changing rooms.

In addition, we benefit from access to waterbased astroturf pitches at a nearby facility, perfect for elite-level hockey training and matches, as well as additional rugby and football pitches located at Delgany. These facilities underpin our commitment to sporting excellence and provide the ideal environment for athletes aiming to perform at the highest level.

S&C SUITE

Physical development is a core part of sporting life at Plymouth College, and our dedicated High Performance Strength and Conditioning Suite plays a central role in this. All pupils receive a structured induction led by our expert strength and conditioning team, ensuring they can use the space safely and effectively with ageappropriate movements and equipment. Once inducted, pupils can access the facility during lunchtime and after school.

Our High Performance Sports Programme athletes and Aquatics swimmers make regular use of the suite as part of their tailored training schedules. Under the guidance of our Head of Strength and Conditioning, they focus on performance enhancement, injury prevention, and recovery.

MEADE-KING HALL

Drama and performance are vibrant aspects of life at our school, with all pupils encouraged to take part in our dynamic programme of school productions. These are staged throughout the year in the Meade-King Hall, a modern, versatile performance space fully equipped with the latest professional lighting, sound, and staging technology. This inspiring environment gives pupils invaluable experience of performing in a high-quality setting, whether they are acting, directing, working backstage, or supporting productions technically.

The Meade-King Hall also serves as a central hub for a wide variety of events, including plays, musical performances, dance showcases, presentations, and assemblies, making it a key space for creative expression and whole-school engagement.

LIBRARY

The Library sits at the heart of the main school building as a vibrant hub for learning, exploration and academic curiosity. Once the original school hall, this bright and inspiring space has been thoughtfully transformed into a modern learning environment where pupils come to read, study, and connect with likeminded peers.

Blending formal study areas with quiet, comfortable reading zones, the library caters to a wide range of learning styles and interests. It houses an extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction titles, academic texts, and magazines, supporting independent research, wider reading, and a lifelong love of learning.

CLASSROOMS

Our classrooms provide an inspiring and supportive environment for academic excellence and creative exploration. Across the campus, pupils benefit from a wide variety of specialist teaching spaces, each designed to enhance learning across disciplines.

State-of-the-art science laboratories offer hands-on opportunities for discovery and experimentation, while our industry-standard music practice rooms and soundproof recording studio allow pupils to develop and refine their musical talents. In our fully equipped Design and Technology workshops, creative ideas are brought to life through practical, project-based learning, encouraging innovation, problemsolving, and technical skill.

WELLBEING HUB

The SEND team is located in the Hub, which is a warm and welcoming space where everyone is always greeted with kindness and understanding.

The Wellbeing Hub has been designed to be a quiet space in the heart of the school where any pupil can go when they need to get away from the hustle and bustle of school life.

At the Hub you will find a talented staff body with a SEND specialist, nurse, safeguarding lead and counsellor.

HOW TO APPLY

UK BASED APPLICATIONS

We are delighted that you are considering a place with us for your child at Plymouth College. The first step is to visit us either in person or virtually to meet with our Head of School, Mr. Peter Watts. We offer bespoke visits, tailored to your child’s interests. Alternatively you may wish to join us for one of our Open Events throughout the year.

Once you have visited, your next step is to formally register for a place. Our supportive Admissions team will be on hand throughout the admissions process. Once registered they will gather details for your child’s school file including a reference from their current school, recent school reports and arrange entrance examinations in both Maths and English. Whilst we are an academically nonselective school, we still require entrance examinations for setting purposes and for identifying where any SEN or learning support may be required.

Our Admissions team will help guide you through Scholarship assessments and Bursary applications for financial assistance.

Once you have received an offer of a place with us and returned accepted paperwork, health questionnaire and provided the team with copies of your child’s passport or birth certificate you will be informed about start dates and induction days for starting school. Joining packs including teacher welcome, timetable, school uniform ordering information and booking for travel and clubs will be sent to you once all acceptance paperwork has been returned successfully. We hope that every child enjoys their start to school life within our community and we work hard to ensure a smooth and successful beginning for your Plymouth College journey.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICATIONS

Thanks to the reputation of boarding at our school, coupled with the size of the boarding houses, we suggest that applications are made as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Applications are accepted from Year 7 (age 11) until Lower Sixth (age 16+).

At any point during the application, we are always delighted when prospective pupils arrange to visit the school before making a final decision. We know that the warmth of the greeting from all they meet will help to make the choice of where to study easier for them.

Applications may be received directly from a prospective pupil’s family or via an agent and initial enquiries should be accompanied by:

• Prospective pupil’s name and date of birth

• Nationality and copy of passport

• School reports (current and previous years)

• Proposed year of entry and length of period of study

OFFER AND ACCEPTANCE OF A PLACE

Upon successful completion of the assessment, a place for your child will be offered by letter. This letter includes our Acceptance Form, which should be completed and returned to us (and the deposit confirmed as paid) in order to secure your child’s place with us.
