Serious Competition!

The August 16th Golf Cart Rally event had a record of 86 golf carts and 290 participants. Each golf cart team navigated designated areas of the community in search of clues, was tasked with items to pick up at specific locations, and encountered interesting challenges along the way. Some tasks included blindly pulling each letter in alphabetical order to spell “PALMS,” giving high fives to large purple hands, singing “Ring Around a Rosie” as a group, searching for a specific hidden number inside plastic Easter eggs, carefully navigating a makeshift “Poinciana” traffic line with toy vehicles, and much more! Everyone expressed how much fun they had! If you haven’t participated in this event before, we host it annually in August. Give it a whirl!

Aging in Place: Two Ways to Get There

We talk a lot about “aging in place,” which means staying in our homes as long as possible to enjoy friends, activities and familiar surroundings. However, too often, our own behaviors limit the chance that we will be able to maintain our lifestyle. In the Resource Center, we focus on providing tools, whether mobility equipment or just good advice, that make it easier for residents to stay in their homes. We know that experts agree that certain strategies can make a big difference.

Exercise

If you’re not running on a treadmill for 45 minutes or lifting weights now, you’re probably not going to start. So, focus on things you can easily implement into your daily life.

Morning Stretches: When you wake up, start with 10 or 15 minutes of stretching: rotate your neck, stretch your shoulder muscles and work your way down to rotating your ankles and giving your toes a good wiggle. Concentrate on feeling your muscles respond and take slow deep breaths. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel when you finally get out of bed and grab the coffee.

Walk : Walk 30 minutes a day and take it easy at first. Walk with a friend (every neighborhood has at least one resident who would love a walking partner). Listen to music or a podcast. Focus on your surroundings: the cranes, the palm trees, the dogs out for a morning trot. Staying acutely aware of all that is around you is a good way to stay mentally healthy.

Balance: Nothing hinders the ability to age in place like a fall. Often falls are caused by nothing more than losing our balance.

Build your balance by standing on one foot for a brief time (maybe only 20 seconds). Keep increasing the time as you become more proficient. Balance only when you are next to a table or something you can lean against or hold onto if you start to topple.

You can practice these exercises in less than an hour a day (maybe the hour you would otherwise be sitting with a bag of chips playing solitaire on your phone). Can you think of a better way to invest your time?

Do a Mini-Declutter

We’re pretty much all on the outer limits of middle age. What do we do? We clutter, collect, keep. Doctors have said that clutter has a negative effect on mental health and on physical well-being (nothing ruins your day like having a box of old bed linens fall on your head from the top shelf of the closet). Many of us should do a real cleanup; but we don’t.

Still, we should all be doing a mini de-clutter. The best way to do this is in stages. Look at the serving bowls in your cabinet. How many do you have? What’s the most you would need at any given time? Select a few that are excess. Put them in a box in the garage and date it. If in six months you haven’t had to retrieve it, it’s clutter. Donate to someone who has no serving bowls.

Do you have clothes clutter? How often have you put on a shirt and then changed because you didn’t like the way it looked? Don’t hang it back in your closet. If it didn’t look good today, it isn’t going to look any better in two months. Give it away and enjoy the extra closet space.

Too many of us are looking for the one big solution that will enable us to stay in our homes for a long, long time. The answer is really just a whole lot of small solutions. If we haven’t come up with something that will help you, stay tuned ... we’ll talk about other techniques in the future.

Committee Roundup FITWELL COMMITTEE

We wish Solivita residents, here or away, a safe, healthy fall. Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen daily, even when summer ends. Protect your pets—avoid walking them on hot pavement; if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Runners and cyclists: avoid peak heat hours and wear proper gear, including helmets and closed-toe shoes. A simple fall or sudden stop could cause serious injury. Golf cart drivers, remember sidewalks must be shared. By law, pedestrians have the right of way, followed by cyclists. Let’s all stay smart, respectful, and safe this season.

Co-Sponsored by the Solivita University Committee and Activities

No studying, tests or exams are given, just enlightening topics to keep your mind energized. All classes are 90 minutes long, unless otherwise noted. Brag About Your Club - Solivita Generosity Makes A Difference

BY DO UNTO OTHERS CLUB (DUO) & SOLIVITA FRIENDS HELPING THOSE IN NEED

Over 120,000 of our food insecure neighbors receive support annually from two pantries: St. Ann’s in Haines City and St. Rose of Lima in Poinciana/Kissimmee. Solivitans are involved in the operations of both pantries, which are run by volunteers and supported by two Solivita clubs.

Do

Unto Others Club at Solivita (DUO)

St. Rose Food Pantry was founded in 2009 during the Great Recession when needy neighbors knocked on the parish office door asking for help. Located on the campus of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the pantry distributed food to over 70,000 people in 2024 and contributed over $600,000 to the community: $100,000 for food and expenses and over $500,000 in donated volunteer labor. DUO was founded in 2009 to provide food, funds, friends and volunteers, and has raised over $700,000 to support the pantry.

All efforts of DUO are focused on building the $4.6 million 9,000 square foot Lima Center (render above) to replace the 60-year-old building and 25-year-old freezer/cooler. To contribute, please make check payable to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Lima Center and send to the address below. For DUO, contact Eileen Beltramba at ebeltramba@gmail.com. The St. Ann’s Pantry was founded in 1998, joined the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in 2002, is located on the St. Ann’s parish campus and fed 50,000 people in 2024. Other services include

rent and utility assistance, vouchers for furniture to the St. Vincent de Paul store, and home visits to help understand and solve issues. Volunteers donated over $462,000 in donated labor to the community in 2024.

Club members volunteer at the pantry and help with fund and food raising events such as the May Stamp Out Hunger food drive sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service. To join or volunteer, please contact Alida Carpenter at alida827@gmail.com.

The St. Vincent de Paul pantry operates out of an old, 1900 square foot house on St. Ann’s parish property. A capital campaign has started for its relocation to a larger facility to allow additional outreach services to the communities we serve. To donate, please go to svdpstann.org , navigate to “Want To Help Others?”

Both Clubs Participate in the Following Solivita Events:

• Monster Food Drive – Solivita resident-wide fall and spring food drives raise approximately two tons of food for each pantry annually plus donations.

• The Solivita Car Show raised $18,000 in 2025, shared equally between the two pantries.

Donations Welcome

Please make separate checks payable to one or both pantries: St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church Food Pantry (3860 Pleasant Hill Road, Kissimmee, FL 34746); Society of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Ann Conference (P.O Box 4144, Haines City, FL 33845).

CERT + PulsePoint: Working Together to Save Lives

What is CERT?

CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is made up of Solivita volunteers who have been trained by Polk County Fire Rescue (PCFR) to assist during emergencies.

• Provide first aid, basic search & rescue, and disaster support

• Assist first responders until professional help arrives

• Educate the community about preparedness – hurricane preparedness, Check Call Compress classes, Stop the Bleed and more!

What is PulsePoint Respond?

PulsePoint Respond is a free mobile app that alerts trained citizens when someone nearby is having a cardiac emergency. PCFR subscribes to this service. As soon as a 911 call is made, the information is sent to PulsePoint. Your app can:

• Send immediate alerts when CPR is needed

• Map the closest Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

• Bridge the gap between the cardiac event and when PCFR arrives

Thank You, Solivita!

When a Cardiac Emergency Happens

1. PulsePoint can alert you if you’re nearby – within walking distance.

2. CERT skills give you the confidence to act quickly –provide quality chest compressions, how and when to use an AED.

3. Together, we can save lives before PCFR arrives

Get Involved

• Join CERT: Learn life-saving skills and be part of your community’s safety network. Contact Eric Larson at solivitafl.cert@gmail.com.

• Take or re-take the Check Call Compress class. Upcoming classes can be located on CERT’s webpage on SolivitaHOA.com

• Download PulsePoint Respond and AED Apps: Get alerted when you can make a difference.

CERT + PulsePoint Respond = Faster Help & More Survivors.

I want to express how grateful I am to be your account manager for Solivita. This year has come with its share of challenges, but I’m proud of how our team has successfully overcome them. This time of year, we deal with working around Mother Nature to ensure everyone gets mowed. Wet conditions can delay services, as our crews will not mow if the ground is too saturated to avoid damaging the turf. When this happens, we redirect our teams to focus on boulevards and common areas. In the meantime, we’re also taking the opportunity to complete value-added projects throughout the community, continuing to enhance the overall appearance and health of your landscapes.
