Dear future student,
Welcome to Victoria University (VU)! As you begin this next chapter of your life, I want to share my experiences and offer some advice to help you make the most of your VU experience.
My time at VU has been incredibly rewarding. The supportive teaching staff and the learning model have significantly impacted me: focusing on one subject at a time, I have been able to dive fully into the unit and maintain a healthy work–life balance – something that was challenging in high school.
Life at VU is dynamic and inclusive. Through volunteering for events and working as a student ambassador, I’ve built meaningful connections with students, staff and the VU community. Leadership opportunities and clubs have helped me grow professionally and personally.
Looking ahead to my career, VU has prepared me well for life after graduation, and the skills I’ve gained through practical projects will help me excel. I now feel confident in navigating challenges and know I will thrive in my cyber security career.
My advice for future VU students is simple: take full advantage of VU’s resources and opportunities. Get involved with clubs, attend networking events, and volunteer whenever you can.
These experiences will enhance your student life, help you build long-lasting relationships, and prepare you for success after graduation.
Most importantly, stay curious, have fun, work hard and enjoy every step of your journey!

Imagine a university experience that puts you at the centre. One that makes it easier to balance life and learning while helping you feel confident, engaged and connected – and ready to reach your goals, your way.
Welcome to the VU Block Model.
We’re the first university in Australia to teach this way, and the first in the world to roll it out at such scale.
And the results? It’s been an award-winning game-changer.
Since we launched the VU Block Model, our students have thrived both academically and personally, forming deeper relationships with peers and industry.
You gain skills and experience in small, workshop-style classes, learning hands-on from industry connections and developing the networks you’ll need for the career you really want.
The VU Block Model is all about setting you up for success, your way.
You’ll study one subject at a time every four weeks, getting a deeper grasp on what you’re learning while enjoying a more collaborative, personalised experience. Some postgraduate students study two subjects at a time in eight-week blocks.
With three-hour classes, three days a week, you’ll have the flexibility to take charge of your busy schedule. So you can earn while you learn – and still have time for everything else in your life.

Your voice is valued
Small, workshop-style classes ensure you never get lost in the crowd. Instead, you take an active role in your own learning, and find it easy to build meaningful connections with your peers and teachers.
Ranked #1 in Victoria
With support on offer like no other uni, we’re ranked #1 in Victoria^ for educational experience and teaching quality – showing students really do think the VU Block Model is something special.

With a strong job market across a variety of industries, Melbourne offers great opportunities to support your studies through part-time work and gain valuable postgraduate work experience.

opportunities

It’s the perfect place to get international work experience, develop new skills and kick-start your career.
Before applying for jobs in Melbourne, check in with our VU Careers Hub team to get the best support, including interview practice, access to our online job search and information about work rights. While you study
Many international students choose to work while living and studying in Melbourne. An Australian Student visa (subclass 500) allows you to work part-time up to 48 hours per fortnight and full-time during semester breaks.
Working part-time is a great way to support yourself, develop skills and meet new people. The VU Block Model teaching method offers focused and flexible timetables to help you balance study with work.
As an international student, you are required to maintain course enrolment and ensure satisfactory attendance and progress. We strongly advise you to keep up to date with any changes to your visa conditions, including work rights, such as the number of hours you are permitted to work.

After you graduate
If you’re interested in staying in Australia to work after you graduate, you’ll need to get a relevant working visa before your student visa expires. There are two options available to you under the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485): the Post-Higher Education Work stream and the Post-Vocational Education Work stream.
The qualification you use to meet the Australian study requirement determines the stream you can apply for. Both visas let you live, study and work in Australia for a temporary period of time. Please note that the maximum eligible age for a Temporary Graduate visa is 35 years or under at the time of application, or under 50 years for postgraduate research students.

Before you start your studies, it’s a great idea to prepare a budget based on your lifestyle and accommodation choices. This page offers an indication of some of the main expenses of studying and living in Melbourne.
Your tuition fees will be outlined in your offer letter. You will need to pay a tuition fee deposit to accept your offer.
After you start your course, you’ll be invoiced for each unit (subject) before it starts. Tuition fees vary by course and may change.
Study costs
You might need to buy equipment, textbooks and clothing (like uniform) for some courses. These costs are separate from your tuition fees. Allow approximately A$650 for books and stationery each year, with some courses requiring additional payments for compulsory equipment or uniforms.
