With Macquarie Centre shopping complex and a wide variety of restaurants, cafés and retail stores nearby, enjoy a relaxing and convenient lifestyle with everything that you need at your doorstep.

Getting to and from campus

We are only 18 minutes by metro from Sydney’s city centre, with trains running every four minutes during peak hours. This makes Macquarie one of the most accessible universities to get to by public transport – which include our own on-campus metro train station, regular buses and more than 4500 car spaces.

Sydney’s transport system is safe, clean and reliable. With buses, trains, ferries and light rail, there are plenty of options to get around the city. Macquarie University is the only university in Australia with its own metro station. The station is conveniently located on the corner of Herring Road and University Avenue, near Macquarie Centre shopping complex, so you’re only a few minutes away from your classes.

Future employability secured for

A career that is rewarding and makes a measurable difference in the world is the dream of many. To help you succeed, we have established a set of career accelerator initiatives through which we will educate and empower you to launch your career in whatever field ignites your passion.

It is our mission at Macquarie to prepare you for the future – whatever it may look like for you. Experts predict that about 50 per cent of jobs, as we know them today, will not exist in a decade. That’s why it is vital you have a skill set when you graduate that allows you to reinvent yourself in any industry. So, we will encourage and support you to develop your practical know-how alongside your technical skills, grab opportunities to experience new things here in Australia and across the globe, get as much hands-on experience as you can, and network with our industry and community partners.

DEGREES WITH INTERNSHIPS

Our unique PACE (Professional and Community Engagement) program – the only one of its kind in Australia – gives you practical experience that’s fully integrated into your course, engaging you in real-world learning activities with organisations across Australia and around the globe. The possibilities are endless – you could intern at an international corporation, join a startup as one of its first employees or work with local councils to develop community engagement strategies. Our PACE industry partners include international leading organisations such as Cochlear, Engineers Without Borders Australia and Konica Minolta. As a PACE student, you will have the opportunity to learn from sectorleading professionals, gaining insights from experienced practitioners in various fields. It gives you the chance to road-test your career plans, allows you to apply your classroom skills in a professional environment, and helps you develop confidence for a successful transition to the workplace.

CO-DESIGNED BY INDUSTRY

The world is changing at a rapid pace. The employability skills that were in demand two years ago may not be so well regarded or even necessary in five or 10 years. So that our degrees equip you with the skills of the future, we design many of them in consultation with industry. This means we can respond to the needs of industry in real time, and you will develop the most relevant skills.

CAREER & EMPLOYMENT SERVICE

Our on-campus dedicated Career and Employment Service team assists you in planning for your career, searching and applying for jobs, preparing your résumé and connecting you with industry professionals and recruiters. At any time during your study, you can attend free seminars, get your résumé reviewed, access online resources or book a one-on-one appointment with a careers consultant.

Global community. Real-world impact.

When you graduate from Macquarie University, you join a talented and diverse community. We’re proud of our alumni, many of whom have gone on to make valuable contributions to society in Australia and around the world.

Impactful research through collaboration

The world’s challenges are complex and interrelated. The solutions require thinking that is not constrained by traditional academic boundaries. With a collegial and cross-disciplinary approach at the heart of our ethos, Macquarie is recognised globally for our pre-eminence in research in a broad range of areas.

REAL-WORLD RESEARCH IMPACT

In applying our research, our discoveries translate into real improvements for local, national and global communities. One such discovery is wi-fi, which our researchers co-developed with CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), and which has transformed the way the world accesses the internet. Other innovations – such as shark-deterrent surfboards, archaeology at the cutting edge of technology, hearing treatments that unlock a world of possibilities and synthetic yeast that could feed billions – demonstrate our collective intelligence and potential to solve real-world problems.

FUTURE-FOCUSED RESEARCH AGENDA

Our five future-shaping research priorities – Healthy People, Resilient Societies, Prosperous Economies, Secure Planet and Innovative Technologies – provide a focal point for cross-disciplinary research that draws on the deep disciplinary strengths Macquarie is known for and aligns with the national research agenda and global challenges of significance.

OUTSTANDING ON THE WORLD STAGE

We are rated among the highestperforming research universities in Australia. In the 2018 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation, we achieved the highest rating of five* –outstanding performance well above world standard – in agricultural and veterinary sciences, and physical sciences. In total, 100 per cent of our research activity is rated at world standard or above.

I initially chose Macquarie because it was the only university in Sydney to offer a major in astronomy and astrophysics. The reason why I’ve stayed for seven years, though, is because Macquarie is simply amazing. We’re given opportunities to engage with industry – I’ve collaborated with the Parkes radio telescope and the FAST telescope in China. The quality of research is fantastic and the facilities are excellent, and our observatory has the largest telescope in Sydney. I’m now completing a PhD investigating binary star systems, with a plan to work in academia, industry or teaching.

Prepare to meet the needs of this rapidly changing sector by learning about security from a range of perspectives, including risk management, emergency response, national resilience, business continuity planning, law enforcement and the use of military force. And by learning to think critically and develop solutions by using real-world analytical techniques to examine contemporary security challenges, you will gain key employability skills.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Business consultant, intelligence analyst, military officer, policy adviser, risk analyst, security consultant.

Not only is Macquarie the only university in Sydney to offer security studies, it also offers a wide range of double degrees. This was fantastic when I decided I wanted to also study cybersecurity, which members of my family had studied at Macquarie and recommended highly. My area of study is exciting because cybersecurity and national security are so fast-moving. Policies and research can change the international structure quickly, which means global issues can be better understood and prevented.

English language requirements

You must meet Macquarie’s English language requirements to be eligible for a degree. You can satisfy these requirements in a number of ways, depending on your circumstances.

For entry to the majority of courses at Macquarie University, a demonstrated level of English language proficiency equivalent to an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0 (or equivalent) is required. Some courses – including in education, law and medicine –require a higher level of English proficiency. See our website for detailed English language requirements for these courses.
