Two arrested at airport

MARTI WILL

Cable theft at the Welkom Airport has caused hundreds of thousands of rand in damage to a R3 million project, creating a major setback.

Two men, aged 37 and 46, were arrested for theft and tampering with essential infrastructure.

Private security officers discovered the pair on 20 January at 00:30 at the Welkom Airport after they had already stolen 123m of copper cable, which was subsequently recovered from the suspects.

“Police confiscated the copper cable and logged it as evidence for further investigation.

Tiisetso Joseph Seeisa (37) and Collen Mathebula (46) were subsequently arrested. They appeared in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 22 January,” says Sgt Palesa Thabana of the police in Lejweleputswa.

Aviation expert Brian Emmenis explained that a state-of-the-art LED runway lighting system had been installed at the airport several years ago.

“This lighting system was on par with the best systems at most major airports in South Africa. The truth is that these criminals have ripped up cables and destroyed this major project, which is

heartbreaking,” says Emmenis.

He notes a fact often overlooked is that the Welkom Airport is ideally situated for training pilots, and recently large numbers of flying schools have been making use of the airport for night training.

“This is primarily due to the fact that the airspace above Welkom is uncluttered and in most cases the weather conditions are favourable for the training of student pilots,” Emmenis explains.

He says that recently the military has also started to use this airport for training sessions.

“One of the biggest tragedies is that these criminals have endangered the lives of people

such as rescue pilots who arrive at the airport in the dead of night to collect critically ill patients for hospital transfers.

“These life support air ambulances require proper lighting in order to land and take off safely. This capability has now been lost. This truly is a tragedy for Welkom Airport.”

He explains that the lights form part of a complex system and will require repair by the original supplier.

“Pilots had the capability to switch the lights on whilst approaching the runway, and land at night. They could also automatically switch the runway lights off when taking off again,” says Emmenis.

A matric learner of the Lephola High School in Thabong died when he was hit by a vehicle on the R730 road at Tisha Vanga Bridge on Tuesday 20 January. Lebohang Lekoala (17) was on his way to school when the accident happened. The police found

Neglect plagues Goldfields

MARTI WILL

The ongoing water crisis in Residensia, Odendaalsrus, has left residents without water for more than 12 consecutive days.

“We demand an immediate and clear action plan from either Matjhabeng or Vaal Central Water detailing how full water pressure will be restored to Residensia.

“I have received no feedback from Vaal Central Water.

The only response received from Matjhabeng Local Municipality has been that water pressure is ‘low’.

“This is wholly inadequate, particularly given that no tangible effort has been made to restore sufficient water pressure to residents’ homes,” says Estelle Dansey, DA councillor.

Dansey says during the days without water, a water tanker was only twice dispatched to the area.

“This is grossly insufficient, especially under extreme heat conditions and considering residents’ basic daily needs.

“Residents have been left without answers, assistance, or any sense of urgency from the responsible authorities.

“The continued use of ‘low water pressure’ as an excuse for sustained service delivery failure will no longer be accepted.

“I will also continue to engage with residents and follow up relentlessly until this matter is resolved,” she says.

In Allanridge the severe environmental neglect is to be escalated by Cllr Jessica Nel.

“I want written explanations from the acting municipal manager and I am engaging with the director of Matjhabeng Parks and Recreation to initiate an urgent, large-scale clean-up intervention.”

What was once known as one of the most beautiful towns in the Goldfields, with well-maintained parks and flowers, is now characterised by weeds, invasive shrubs, rodents, pests, dilapidated buildings, and spaces that provide cover for criminals.

“The municipality must give urgent accountability for the prolonged absence of municipal workers in Allanridge,” says Nel.

“Community Work Programme Workers have not been visible or effective in and around the town. Previous excuses included workers lacked equipment such as spades, forks, and saws, while the tractors and cutting accessories were broken. These excuses no longer justify the scale of the neglect,” says Nel.

Added to this is the failing sewerage infrastructure, inaccessible roads, joblessness, and the lack of business development (as promised so many times by the Local Economic Development) that are adding to the community’s hardship.

Nel says issues like open sewerage lines in the middle of the road continue to pose a serious danger for children who can drown, as it is close to the school.

These hazards have remained unattended for months.

Nel says she will arrange meetings with businesses and stakeholders to discuss practical, sustainable solutions to clean, rehabilitate, and improve the environment in Allanridge.

• Based on South African Weather Service (SAWS) reports, the Matjhabeng Local Municipality (which includes Welkom, Odendaalsrus, Allanridge, Hennenman, Ventersburg, and Virginia) is experiencing periods of hot to very hot conditions.

Forecasts have indicated temperatures reaching, or potentially exceeding, the 30°C to 35°C range.

These high temperatures come amid ongoing service delivery challenges in the region, including reports of water shortages in certain areas.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER ‘ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING’

MARTI WILL

A 49-year-old man has been arrested following an alleged accidental shooting incident that resulted in the death of his 22-year-old nephew in Thabong, Welkom.

Members of the police received a murder complaint from a local hospital on Sunday 11 January, at approximately 23:47.

Upon their arrival, the officers were directed to the body of the deceased, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim had succumbed to his injuries after being brought to the hospital by family members, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the young man is suspected to have been shot accidentally, at home, by his uncle. According to the suspect's account, he believed there was an intruder in the kitchen and discharged his firearm, fatally wounding his nephew.

Police have since confiscated the firearm, its licence, and seven live rounds of ammunition for further investigation. The circumstances surrounding the shooting incident will form part of the ongoing police inquiry.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and has since made an appearance before the Welkom Magistrates' Court on 13 January, on a charge of murder.

Power of cooperative crime fighting stressed

The Thabong Partnership Policing unit, working within their designated sector and supported by community policing members, led an educational crime awareness campaign at Phokeng Village on Tuesday 20 January.

Priority crimes highlighted during the discussion included theft, mob justice, rape, along with drug and alcohol abuse.

These issues were identified as the most prevalent crimes within Sector 2, says Capt. Malebo Khosana of the Tabong police.

Police officers engaged in constructive discussions with community members, exploring challenges and potential solutions for collaborative crime reduction and prevention efforts. The officers emphasised the serious implications of mob justice, stating that such actions constitute lawlessness. They encouraged the community to work closely with law enforcement agencies, report

all criminal activities through proper channels, and allow the justice system to function effectively.

Community members were given opportunities to pose questions to the police officers. The interactive format allowed for meaningful dialogue between law enforcement and residents.

Educational pamphlets were distributed to attendees, and community

members received emergency contact numbers for reporting crimes and accessing police assistance.

The community gathering concluded successfully, demonstrating the value of partnership policing initiatives in fostering cooperation between law enforcement and local communities in addressing crime prevention and public safety concerns.

R30 000 DRUG HAUL

The Welkom Anti-Gang Unit has arrested a 43-year-old foreign national after drugs, money, and suspected stolen mobile phones were discovered at his business premises in Welkom.

On Tuesday 20 January, unit members received intelligence regarding drug dealing activities in the Welkom CBD and acted upon it.

Upon arrival at the identified business, officers searched the premises and discovered narcotics, cash, and mobile phones believed to be stolen.

Members confiscated drugs with an estimated street value of R30 000. The seized items consisted of four sachets of crystal methamphetamine, 56 sachets of Cat (methcathinone), 101 full mandrax tablets, 11 mobile phones, and an undisclosed amount of cash, all of which were logged as evidence.

The male suspect was arrested and faces charges of dealing in drugs, possession of drugs, and possession of suspected stolen property.

ILLEGAL WEAPON SEIZED

The police in Welkom have arrested a 47-year-old man after an unlicensed firearm was discovered hidden at his home in Meloding.

On 21 January off-duty members attached to the Welkom Anti-Gang unit received intelligence regarding an unlicensed firearm. The information was operationalised and led officers to a residence in Meloding.

During the search of the house, members discovered a firearm concealed underneath a mattress in the suspect's bedroom. No reasonable explanation for the firearm could be provided.

The suspect was arrested and appeared before the Virginia Magistrates' Court on Friday 23 January.

Hope for the week

Do not despise the refining sufferings

A belated and blessed new year to you all. We had the privilege of sharing our Christmas table with friends, old and new. We shared a meal and some shared their stories. We were inspired by the realities of struggle; the hardships some experienced in war-torn and violent countries, only having to leave in search of a home elsewhere.

As I recently read the story of Joseph, hated and sold into slavery by his own brothers and then having to endure false accusation and prison, the stories of our friends resonated the same.

Before his character was prepared for what God had ordained for him, Joseph endured much pain and hardship in what would in modern terms be referred to as “character development”.

In Egypt, Joseph realises that it was God himself who had brought him there in order to save a remnant of his people.

As we read in Genesis 45: 5: “It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives.”

We often cannot see that the

circumstances we face, be it hatred in people, a merciless boss, or a prejudiced co-worker, are possibly part of our journey to a higher level of maturity.

Our greatest example of an individual faced with this predicament, is Jesus.

Isaiah 53: 7 says: “He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before his shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.”

Jesus knew that choosing obedience to the Father would result in the greatest victory of all time.

Perhaps you are facing some giants like most of us are.

May I encourage you with Romans 5: 3-4: “We also boast in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope of salvation. And this hope will not disappoint.”

May God produce in you exactly that which he has destined for you to become. Much grace and favour to you all.

– Lana Archontakis of the Kingdom Ministries

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” Ook het Coco Chanel, Franse modeontwerper en sakevrou, gesê: “Don’t spend time beating on a wall, hoping to transform it into a door.” Besoek wat.co.za om meer uit te vind oor die WAT, wat vanjaar sy 100ste bestaansjaar vier. – Bron: WAT

Rise above divisions and return to simplicity of gospel

Pastor Khaya Mqeke, yours in Christ’s service: Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, grace and peace to you in the precious name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I write this letter with a burdened yet hopeful heart. These are defining times for the Church, and the decisions we make today will shape the faith, character, and future of the next generation entrusted to us by God.

The new generation is watching us closely. They are not only listening to what we preach from the pulpit, but are observing how we live,

lead, and most importantly, treat one another. Division, strife, and personal agendas have the potential to weaken the witness of the Church and confuse those who are searching for truth, purpose, and hope.

The Word of God reminds us that “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation” (Matthew 12:25). Unity is not optional; it is a Biblical mandate. It does not mean uniformity, but requires humility, love, forgiveness, and a shared commitment to the mission of Christ above personal differences.

For the sake of the new generation, we must

rise above divisions rooted in personalities, titles, denominations, or past hurts.

Our children and young people need to see a Church that models Christlikeness – one that walks in love, speaks truth with grace, and stands united in purpose.

Let us choose reconciliation over resentment, cooperation over competition, and vision over vanity. Let us return to the simplicity of the Gospel: loving God, loving people, and making disciples who will transform society with both the Word and the power of God.

I humbly call upon pastors, leaders, elders,

and believers to pray together, walk together, and build together. The harvest is great, challenges are real, and the next generation deserves a united Church that reflects the heart of Christ. May the Lord heal what is broken, restore what is lost, and knit our hearts together for His glory and for generations to come.

Projek bring al 39 j. lank sonskyn

MARTI WILL

“My passie is minderbevoorregte blanke gesinne en my liefde vir God.

Julle maak ’n groot verskil in ander se lewe,” sê Viljoen.

MAN STILL UNIDENTIFIED

The Bronville detectives are requesting assistance from the public to locate the relatives of an unknown, deceased man.

On Sunday 22 August in 2021, members of the police were summoned to a scene following the discovery of an unidentified man near a bridge in Bronville.

Upon arrival, officers found a white man lying motionless beside the railway track. The man was declared dead at the scene.

The deceased was wearing a black T-shirt, pink tracksuit trousers, a khaki jacket, a Gel Venture trainer with yellow and pink stripes on the right foot, and a black and pink football boot on the left foot.

The deceased remains at the Government Mortuary. No one has come forward to identify him despite the passage of time.

Anyone with information that could assist in locating relatives of the deceased is urged to come forward.

Positive results yielded

Notable improvements in learner attendance and academic performance were marked during oversight visits to two schools.

Recently, Zama Lucas Sigwebela, member of the Free State Legislature, conducted oversight visits to the Vetrivier Combined School, a farm school located outside Bultfontein, and the Thorisong Primary School in Hoopstad.

Here, Sigwebela expressed his appreciation for the notable improvement at both schools. This enhanced performance indicators suggest that educational initiatives are yielding positive results in rural school environments.

However, Sigwebela also acknowledged challenges beyond the control of both schools’ management, which require coordinated intervention and support from all stakeholders at local and provincial government levels.

The oversight visits form part of the Free State Legislature’s programme aimed at assessing the state of readiness of schools and monitoring overall educational performance across the province. These visits underscore the legislature’s commitment to mon-

Outcomes enhanced

During an oversight visit to schools in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, executive mayor Veronica Ntakumbana reiterated the district’s commitment to bolstering educational initiatives.

Several senior officials joined her on the visit to the Letsete Secondary School and the Seabo Primary School in Thabong, Welkom.

Seiso Mohai, deputy minister in the Presidency responsible for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, said objectives of the visit include evaluating school interventions in place, identifying actions to tackle challenges affecting teaching and learning, and engaging with learners to highlight the significance of education.

itoring educational standards and ensuring that schools across the Free State receive appropriate support to deliver quality education.

The findings from the visits will influence future policy decisions and resource allocation to address challenges whilst building upon the positive developments observed at both schools.

Mohai emphasised the importance of comprehensive understanding of prevailing circumstances and to offer support to schools to provide quality education.

He underscored the government’s dedication to enhancing educational outcomes, urging learners to pursue excellence.

Phaello Zonke, district education director, delivered an overview of the educational landscape in the district. Both notable achievements and areas requiring advancement were emphasised.

Elias Nkoane, deputy principal of Letsete Secondary School, provided insights into the school’s performance and developments.

Acting mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Mojalefa Buti, expressed gratitude to the School Governing Body, teachers, and community stakeholders for crucial support of learners. Proceedings were facilitated by Zanemvula Dingaan, programme director and circuit manager at the Department of Education in the district. Ntakumbana, in conjunction with Absa, donated sanitary towels to Letsete Secondary School.
