The response from members has been overwhelmingly positive, and the club has worked hard to clarify that attendance at their monthly meets is open to all, regardlessofwhetheror not individuals bring donations. The focus is on fostering a welcoming atmosphere where car enthusiasts can unite fora shared purpose.

MK1 Cartel is passionate about changing negative perceptions of car crews, which are sometimes unfairly seen as troublemakers Dylan De Beer, aclub spokesperson, spoke about their broader goals:“The car community has ahuge reach through social media, and with that comes responsibility. We want to show that we’re not just about cars; we’re about

TLC said in amessage of solidarity.

In neighbouring Killarney Gardens, the community has rallied to support those affected. Killarney International Raceway has openedacollection site, appealing for practical donations rather than cash. Items requested include school stationery, school shoes,blankets, bedding and basic householdappliances such as kettles and toasters.

Apensioner from Parow North recently donated several beanies she had knitted to the Tygerberg and RedCross War Memorial Children’s Hospital trusts.

Arlette Marais, daughter of the 91-yearoldBlanche (Barney) Meyer, says her mother has accumulated quite the collection of beanies.

Just recently she donated someof the beanies to the TygerbergHospital Children's Trust.

Last year, on Friday 19 December, the family also donated some of the beanies to the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital Trust. The latter had been their mother’s main support system when it came to getting medical attentionfor all herchildren, Arlette says.

Blanche is the founder of Barney’s Beanies. Arlette says her mother would welcomeanyone who wants to learn and at one stage gave free knitting lessons. At one pointher house was upgradedto include adedicated knitting room,she says.

City says no waterrestrictions

DESIRÉERORKE

Cape Town residents can breathe easy this summerasthere will be no water restrictionsduring the coming months.

The announcementcomes after many people questioned why the city didn't putwater limits in placebefore the busy December holidays whilst there was severe pressure on water supply.

Maycomemberfor water and sanitation, ZahidBadroodien, this week in a statement to TygerBurger said the decision isn't actually made by Cape Town's city council. Instead, the National Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has the power to decide when water restrictions are needed.

Last November, government experts took aclose look at thecity's water situation and concluded thatCape Town has enough watertoget through the 2025/2026 hydrological year without any restrictions, says Badroodien

This decisionwas based on adetailed analysis that weighed several important factors

Officials examinedhow full the dams are right now compared to the same time last year, looked at current rainfall patterns, and calculatedhow much water people typically use during the hot summer monthswhen demand peaks.

Aftercrunchingall the numbers, DWS gave Cape Town the green light to continue withoutrestrictions.

STAYWATER-WISE

Looking ahead to the new year, no restrictions are planned for these months either. However, residentsare reminded that permanent water by-law regulations do apply and are compulsory even when water restrictions have not been implemented. "While thereisno immediatereason for concern around Cape Town's dam levels, everyone needs to pleasemanage theirwater use over the coming months to ensure that we will not need to implement water restrictions in future. Water restrictions arethe last option and done to conserve water, but the likelihood of implementing them can be prevented if we all use water wisely,"says Badroodien.

"TheCityismonitoring the water use and dam levels very closely, and decisions will depend on thiscoming winter's rainfall. Restrictions will only be considered if thereisahigh likelihood that the dam levels will fall below 80% on 1November 2026. We need to reiterate that early proactive measures are far more effective than emergency restrictions. He concludes by saying the city's daily usage target of less than 975 million litres per day was determined to mitigate the risk associated with below-average or unpredictable rainfall during 2026, whilst also maintaining areliable water supply.”

jerseys and caps for family and friends.

As she enteredher later years, she reflected on her life journey with gratitude. What began as achildhood hobby had blossomed into alifelong passionthat notonlysupported herfamily but also enriched the lives of countless others,her daughterexplains.

Currently, her mother focusses only on knitting babies’ beanies and hasexpressed her wish to donate these to especially vulnerable ones.

With each stitch, sheweaves alegacy of love, creativity, andcommunity thatwould hopefully inspire future generations, says Arlette.

Family andfriends gathered on Reconciliation Daylastyear(16 December) to package the beanies into sets of two witha written summary, in English, Xhosa and Afrikaans, of the intentbehind the gift. These packs will also be handed over to community medical facilitiesto be gifted to mothers of babies, especially newborns,Arlette explains.

Safety tips forschoolruns as newacademicyear starts

With the 2026 academic year now in full swing, parents have been remindedto exercise caution when dropping offor picking up theirchildren from school.

District Group, alocal private security company, last week shared somehelpful safety tips in this regard, to help parents. In apost on its social media page, it says the daily school run is routine, but that routine can bring risks. Busystreets, predictableroutes, and rushed handovers create opportunities for mistakes and crime, they wrote.

The group mentions, however, thatsmall habits make abig difference.

Furthermore, parents arereminded that paying attention matters. “Patterns matter. Criminals and opportunists notice predictable routines. Add distracted drivers, and crowded streets, and even minor lapses canescalate,” they warn

They shared some simple safety habits which parents and guardians can practise ensuring asafer school run

. Vary your route and timing whenever possible;

. Avoidusing your phone while driving, stopping or waiting;

. Keep cardoors locked when stationary;

. Stayalert to unfamiliar people or vehicles nearby;

. Usedesignateddrop-off zonesfor better visibility and;

. Teachchildren nottoleave with anyone who is notpre-approved.

The companysays safe handoversare also key.

Children should always know whois authorised to collectthem, what to do if something feels wrong, and that it is okay to refuse and askfor help.

Most incidents are prevented notby force, but by awarenessand early action, your vigilanceprotects your child and everyone else’s, the companysays.

Parents are encouraged to review their school runs, as onesmall change canmake every trip safer.

The companyalso encourages parents andguardians to contact their security provider, the police or District Watch themselves,iftheysee something unusual, suspicious behaviour, unfamiliar vehicles, or any safety concerns nearaschool

Baieouersisaandieeuwelvan skoolvervoeruitgelewer

—BRENDEN RUITER
