The Durbanville CBD Watch, an initiative affiliated with AfriForum, continues to pioneer a proactive, data-driven approach to manage street people in the Durbanville Central Business District (CBD)
In partnership with Durbanville police, City of Cape Town's law enforcement department and Mould Empower Serve (MES), a joint operation was conducted on the evening of Friday 17 October to profile and assist people living on the streets marking another milestone in this coordinated urban safety and social outreach model
The evening operation brought together a multi-disciplinary team representing all key stakeholders, including senior police officers, law enforcement officers, MES social support staff, Durbanville CBD Watch members, as well as security officers of CDF and Titanium armed response units to ensure the safety of social workers during the operation
OUTSTANDINGWARRANTS
Fingerprints were taken of the street people encountered and the person was profiled, allowing the police to identify people with outstanding warrants
MES introduced social assistance through Mi-Change vouchers to provide both immediate relief and a gateway to further support
“For the first time, we saw mobile fingerprinting in action,” said Richard Downing, chair of the Durbanville CBD Watch
“This ensures that our interventions are both compassionate and accountable combining safety, data, and social responsibility in one framework,” he says
PROACTIVEMODEL
The Durbanville CBD Watch model, which was launched in 2023, has evolved
WATCH STRENGTHENS PARTNERSHIPS TO IMPROVE SAFETY
from reactive enforcement into a proactive and evidence-based system built on four key pillars
"This includes monitoring regular, coordinated patrols maintain real-time insight into the situation of displaced persons across the CBD; collaboration partnerships with police, law enforcement and MES have been strengthened,"
Downing says
"The lastest operation was personally supported by Col Gonum Munsamy, station commander, and Capt Berenice Cloete, commander of visible policing," he says
"It also includes data and profiling Systematic profiling allows targeted followups whether for social reintegration or law enforcement intervention It also includes integrated assistance and social aid, such as Mi-Change vouchers, which is delivered alongside enforcement efforts, ensuring a balanced humanitarian approach
"This coordinated system has already delivered tangible results," Downing says "Over the past 24 months, the number of displaced persons sleeping in the Durbanville CBD has been reduced by 50%, demonstrating the effectiveness of consistent monitoring and collaboration," he says
SUSTAININGSAFETYANDDIGNITY
"The Durbanville CBD Watch continues to refine this integrated model one that respects human dignity while maintaining public safety and order You can’t manage what you don’t measure,” adds Downing “Through responsible profiling, data
FCD needs furniture for new building
FCD Skills Centre in Durbanville has recently moved to its news premise at Durbanville Town Centre and is in need of some items to make their new space welcoming and inspiring
The centre is now situated on the top floor of the building previously known as Queen s Corner The centre had to move in December last year for extensive upgrading of the Durbanville Town Centre, which reopened about two weeks ago
They are specifically looking for outdoor furniture for student break times, a large TV screen for the additional classroom, and indoor and outdoor plants to beautify the new centre
INCREASEDCAPACITY
Over the past year, 440 beneficiaries participated in training, with 85% of
graduates becoming economically active, says Jane Gelderman, chief executive officer The move to the new training centre provides increased capacity and infrastructure to impact more lives, Gelderman says "The centre can now host up to 50 students at any given time through three spacious training rooms instead of only two previously, offering a positive and welcoming space not only for students but also for staff and volunteers," she says "The new space represents more than just growth in size it is a hub of opportunity and hope," Gelderman says FCD also continues to run skills programmes and support services at their Fisantekraal branch in Greenville . Contact FCD Skills Centre on 072 561 1902 or info@fisantekraal.org.za to donate or for more information.

The approval follows an extensive environmental assessment and consultation process undertaken in full compliance with the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA)
The authorisation is the culmination of more than two years of dedicated environmental planning and public participation, including four rounds of public consultation, two open days, and over 40 specialist studies assessing environmental, social, and technical factors With this authorisation now in place, the environmental practitioners have 14 days to formally notify all registered interested and affected parties
“The granting of environmental authorisation is an important validation of the extensive work and consultation that has gone into ensuring this project meets the highest environmental and community standards,” says Deon Cloete, managing director of Cape Winelands Airport
NEXTPHASE
The next phase will focus on developing the detailed plans and implementation measures as stipulated by DEADP before any construction-related activities begin
The Cape Winelands Airport expansion project aims to establish a modern, multipurpose regional airport that enhances connectivity, supports economic growth and unlocks new opportunities for trade, tourism, and industry across the Western Cape, according to the media release
The proposed project entails the expansion of the existing Cape Winelands Airport in a phased development approach
This includes the realignment of the primary runway (01/19) and extending its length to 3,5 km The development will also include comprehensive airside infrastructure such as taxiways, aircraft parking stands, refuelling systems and cargo facilities
The expansion plans include a new boutique terminal building with modern facilities, such as efficient check-in counters with advanced technology for swift processing, spacious and comfortable waiting lounges with ergonomic seating and an array of retail options
CATALYSTFORPOSITIVEIMPACT
The airport is expected to sustain about 35 000 direct and indirect jobs and could sustain just over 100 000 direct and indirect jobs during its initial 20 years of operation The development represents an expected initial investment of approximately R8 billion in Cape Town, which will deliver the terminal buildings, runway and a 450ha developable estate However, the approval comes with a substantial environmental cost The
development will result in wetland loss across the site, which authorities plan to offset through biodiversity programmes elsewhere in the region
Local residents who wish to appeal the decision have until 19 November to submit their objections under the National Appeal Regulations The environmental authorisation document can be accessed on the consulting company’s website at https://phsconsulting co za/proposedexpansion-of-cape-winelands-airport/ or viewed in hard copy at the Fisantekraal Public Library
. A prescribed appeal form, responding statement form, as well as assistance regarding the appeal processes is obtainable from www. westerncape.gov.za/eadp or the office of the minister at 021 483 3721 or email to DEADP Appeals@westerncape.gov.za

Community step up for street people
Cape Town residents stepped up to support a meaningful cause on Saturday 25 October, as the city hosted its first World Homeless Day Fun Walk, bringing awareness to homelessness while fostering community spirit
The event, organised by nonprofit organisation Mould Empower Serve (MES) in partnership with Bellville Athletic Club, drew participants together for more than just exercise
The 2,5-kilometer walk served as a platform to raise awareness about homelessness in South Africa and promote the importance of responsible giving
BUILDINGBRIDGESTHROUGHACTION
Following the walk, participants gathered for a traditional Boerewors braai and engaged in open discussions designed to foster connection, reflection, and deeper understanding of homelessness issues affecting local communities
The collaborative atmosphere encouraged meaningful conversations about how residents can make a positive impact "This isn't just about walking," explains MES’s Lunar Magidigidi
The Cape Town event was part of MES's broader initiative, with similar fun walks taking place in other South African cities including Gqeberha and Kempton Park
AWARENESS
This coordinated effort demonstrates a growing national awareness and commitment to addressing homelessness through community engagement
The World Homeless Day Fun Walk represents a shift toward more thoughtful, community-driven approaches to social challenges
The success of this inaugural Cape Town event suggests that residents are eager for meaningful ways to contribute to their community's wellbeing, setting a positive precedent for future awareness initiatives

After more than six decades of serving the northern suburbs community, the iconic M-KEM 24 Hour Pharmacy in Bellville is embarking on an exciting new chapter as UniCare 24/7 Trusted Health, while maintaining its commitment to providing uninterrupted health-care services to local families.
The transition, announced by founder Hylton Mallach, fondly known as Mr M, comes as part of M-KEM’s partnership with Clicks Holdings, established in 2023 For Bellville residents who have relied on the pharmacy’s roundthe-clock services for generations the change represents continuity rather than disruption
“When I first opened the doors of M-KEM in 1964 my dream was simple, to create a pharmacy that puts people first,” reflected Mallach, whose vision has served countless northern suburbs families through medical emergencies, late-night needs and everyday health-care requirements
He no longer serves as the owner of M-KEM as the Clicks Group has been the owner since 2023
The pharmacy made history in the Western Cape when it pioneered 24-hour pharmaceutical services “In 1999 M-KEM became one of the first pharmacies in South Africa to be open 24 hours a day, ensuring care was always available, day or night,” Mallach noted, a service that has
M-KEM IS NOW PART OF CLICKS HOLDINGS
become essential for Bellville and surrounding communities
COMMUNITYCORNERSTONE REMAINSUNCHANGED
For loyal customers concerned about changes to their trusted healthcare provider, Mallach offered reassurance: “What does this mean for me as a customer?
The answer is simple: everything you love about M-KEM stays exactly the same ”
The familiar faces behind the counter, the specialised clinics and the gold-standard service that has made M-KEM a community institution will continue unabated
The pharmacy’s location in Bellville remains the same as is the round-the-clock availability that has made it a lifeline for emergency medications and urgent healthcare needs continues without interruption
“Today I am honoured to share some exciting news about our future
“In 2023, M-KEM proudly became part of Clicks Holdings, and with this partnership comes the opportunity to take the very best of M-KEM and expand it further than ever before,”
Mallach explained
The rebranding to UniCare 24/7 Trusted Health represents more than just a name change; it signals the recognition of a
uniquely successful community pharmacy model that is now set to benefit other South African communities
The M-KEM approach, characterised by treating health care as personal rather than transactional, has proven so successful in Bellville that it will now serve as the template for a new network of communityfocused pharmacies nationwide
“This transition is not an ending,” Mallach emphasised, "but the continuation of a legacy, one that I am personally proud to endorse "
LOOKINGAHEADWHILE HONOURINGTHEPAST
As Bellville prepares to welcome the UniCare era the community can take pride in knowing its local pharmacy is the gold standard for community health care in South Africa
The model of care developed in the northern suburbs will now extend its reach to help other communities across the country
For Bellville residents the message is clear: while the name above the door may change the community-centred care that has defined M-KEM for 60 years continues stronger than ever under the UniCare banner
The pharmacy continues to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at its familiar Bellville location, ensuring the northern suburbs community never goes without essential health-care services
M-KEM founder Hylton Mallach’s 1964 vision of community-first healthcare continues as the Bellville pharmacy transitions to UniCare 24/7 under the ownership of Clicks Holdings

Teenwin globalt
A13-year-old teen from Durbanville has made South Africa proud by winning not only one, but two international titles Miss Princess Teen Universe 2025 and Junior Top Model of the World 2025 to 2026 at the global competition held in Turkey.
Mila Meyer began her modelling journey just over a year ago when she joined ACE Models Durbanville under the guidance of her coach, Bianca Edwards
Since then, she has achieved remarkable success, collecting numerous awards and titles that reflect her dedication, poise and passion for the industry
Beyond the stage, Mila loves giving back She has been collecting soft toys to donate to children battling cancer and tuberculosis, spreading comfort and hope through small acts of kindness, says her grandmother, Miranda Meyer
"During her year of reign as Miss Princess Teen Universe, she hopes to encourage others to join her in making a difference supporting communities and children wherever there is a need," she says
CHALLENGES
Mila's journey, however, is much more than crowns and titles Mila was born with auditory processing disorder, a condition that makes speech and language processing challenging At the age of seven, she struggled to form full sentences and often withdrew from speaking altogether
"Through the support, acceptance and sisterhood she found at ACE Models, Mila’s confidence began to shine She now not only speaks with confidence, but she comfortably addresses audiences on the microphone and answers judges’ questions with grace
"The feedback she receives is often that her answers are refreshingly honest and beautifully authentic Mila has a heart of gold and it’s this genuine, kind nature that

Kommentaar // Comments
BULL FLUGTAG SOARS AGAIN: Fun,laughter and high-flying excitement filled the

We need to have digital and analog worlds I still have an old motorcycle with an analog speedometer I dislike these new digital speedometers which my car has, and which give one zero “distance”, zero reference point I live in Milnerton If people can get groups of 10 or more people (scholars included) together, I am willing to run weekly meditation and tai chi classes
People can email me (david@mypowerstation biz) WhatsApp notifications are switched off on my phone as they distract me too much
My personal view is that these activities increase people s brain power and ability to do more and stay
Weekend events gridlock city
I think it s time to say to the City administration: Wat genoeg is, is genoeg!
There is hardly a weekend going by without some or other huge event Now we just had this "Classic Motor Race” on an extremely busy Kgosana Drive It’s been poorly planned and seriously inconvenienced probably 100 000 residents who use the affected routes to travel between work and home daily The City no doubt made millions, but won't compensate even one of the affected citizens who’s travelling time will have been longer, using more fuel or paying more for taxi fare
If it’s not a marathon, it’s a huge football game in the stadium when thousands come in their cars gridlocking the city centre for hours (Sunday 5 October) I don’t know what the authorities did during the Western Cape in 2010, I wasn’t here, but I read about parking facilities to the east of the city centre and shuttle buses If then, why not now ?
Film crews hanging around everywhere blocking some roads even during the week or there is a fun walk, or the Cape Town Carnival, or beach Pro Volleyball in Camps Bay, as if that suburb isn’t congested enough It’s become almost impossible for large
coaches to drive along Victoria road any time on any day
The cruise ship season is here again when up to a dozen coaches depart from the cruise terminal on the days a ship is docked Driving up and down Kloof Nek road is a nightmare for the drivers, while turning into it coming from the cable way station in Tafelberg road is a lesson in extreme patience
Not to forget about the CTICC, hosting thousands of conference participants regularly, causing traffic along the adjacent roads to creep along at best Cape Town’s traffic control is totally out of sync at any time in the week, the City administration is out of touch with reality and staging such huge events is pleasuring relatively few yet causing thousands of the rate paying citizens much disruption
The time is long overdue when the number of huge events must be kept to a minimum, such as the traditional ones, Tweede Nuwejaar, the Two Oceans and the Argus
Additional ones should be limited to a maximum of maybe one a month, not like now when we have almost one every weekend

ahead of automation which started in 1760 with the first industrial revolution Imagine being able to work with and absorb and do two to 40 times more than you do now Imagine the ability to instantly recall things you learned years or decades ago Imagine learning techniques that allow you to remember things you think you have forgotten All possible Our brains are individually more powerful than every computer on the planet But do we have the user manual to use them efficiently and effectively? Meditation tai chi and other activities help to develop our brains and help to develop our intuition Intuition is knowing things we were never taught I use my intuition to find possible answers which I always research and check

‘Not a mistake’
Your article “Milnerton High parent pleads for mercy on family (TygerBurger 29 October) refers
Where was the “mercy” for the victim of your son’s bullying behaviour?
This is not some alleged activity It was captured on video for all to see!
And to dismiss deliberate behaviour as a “mistake” is ludicrous
A mistake is when you add 2 + 2 and get 5
This deliberate behaviour caused both physical and emotional harm the victim will live with for the rest of his life
While you are scared to leave your house, imagine the horror endured by the victim having to go to school every day and having to face your son's assault, physical or verbal
This is not about you
It’s about the victim, so deal with it like the victim had to deal with being beaten by a gang of cowards and thugs
What will they be getting up to once they leave school?
Jail time is the only appropriate punishment

Breastcancer statsshared
The Breathe Foundation and Catwalk Models International created awareness on breast cancer specifically breast cancer in men at the De Ville Centre in Durbanville on Saturday 25 October
"Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in South Africa, accounting for 14 to 23,2% of all female cancers," says Silvia Craucamp, chief executive officer of the Breathe Foundation and a sister in oncology
"While incidence rates vary between different population groups, the country has a higher breast cancer death rate than wealthier nations, often due to late diagnosis, limited healthcare access and more aggressive cancer subtypes The lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is approximately one in 27 for South African women," she says
VARIATIONBYRACE
"While white women have a higher incidence rate, coloured women may be diagnosed at a later stage possibly due to poor access to screening and treatment, according to Statistics South Africa," she says
"White women have a higher incidence rate (around one in 13), similar to Western countries, while African women have a lower rate (around one in 81), similar to Japan Risk increases with age, but many women under 40 are also diagnosed," Craucamp says
"The more aggressive triple-negative
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS RAISED AT DE VILLE CENTRE
breast cancer (TNBC) is more commonly diagnosed in younger women and can be harder to treat, according to Statistics South Africa," she says
MALEBREASTCANCER
"In South Africa, male breast cancer accounts for approximately 1,8% to 3% of all breast cancer cases, which is higher than the global average of less than 1%," she says
According to Dr Johan Blomerus from SCP Radiology on the website of Statistics South Africa, black men have higher incidence rates for all breast cancer subtypes
"Invasive ductal carcinoma is the most common type, and the survival rate is often lower than for women, emphasising the importance of early detection," according to the article
"The overall survival rate for men with breast cancer is currently lower compared to women highlighting the need for early diagnosis and treatment," according the article
Advice for breast cancer includes regular screening, starting in your 20s, with clinical exams every one to three years until age 40, then annually . Contact the Breathe Foundation on npobreathefoundation@gmail com with enquiries.

Glans Of, as jy verkies, ‘n bordjie verouderde cheddar en ‘n stukkie donker sjokolade

BLIND CRICKET SA T20 TOURNEY A SUCCESS
Brightfuture forblindstars
AVRILFILLIES
The Blind Cricket South Africa T20 tournament held in Stellenbosch recently was a "resounding succes" and was "a national triumph"
A total of 10 provincial teams participated and the DP Lions were crowned champions after defeating North West Dragons in the final
A preliminary training squad was picked up and out of the identified players a team will be selected to represent South Africa in the T20 World Cup in 2027 in Lahore and Multan in Pakistan
A total of 11 matches were played at Maties Cricket Club in Stellenbosch and the grant from Cricket South Africa (CSA) was successfully deployed for essential services
"The partnership with CSA enabled us to livestream the games on a Youtube channel which greatly enhanced the tournament's visibility and accessibility
The grant by the Hollywood Foundation covered the costs of accommodation and professional livestreaming infrastructure
Gift of the Givers in Athlone provided the lunch for the duration of the tournament," says Frankford Williams, president of Blind Cricket SA
To properly frame the players' achievements, the public needs to understand the modifications that make this fast-paced game possible
"The ball is a larger, hard plastic ball filled with metal ball bearings to allow players to track it audibly
“All deliveries by bowlers must be bowled underarm, and the bowler must loudly shout ‘Play’ upon release so the batsman can prepare Totally blind players (B1) can be caught out after the ball has bounced once, a key adaptation to
ALL DELIVERIES MUST BE BOWLED UNDERARM, AND THE BOWLER MUST LOUDLY SHOUT “PLAY”
compensate for their lack of sight ”
Teams are strictly balanced across three classes of vision impairment
"B1 (totally blind) is the most severe impairment and these batsmen are compensated with double runs for their scores B2 (partially blind) with significant visual restriction are players who often fill key all-rounder roles B3 (partially sighted) is the highest visual acuity allowed and these players face rules closest to sighted cricket and are the least compensated," says Williams
TALENTEXPOSED
The tournament exposed the exceptional talent of Lwande Bhidla (B3) from DP World Lions and Lesedi Lesufi (B2) of Titans
The achievements of these blind Protea players, whose club allegiances are confirmed, were the highlight of the tournament
Bhidla received the award as Player of the Tournament and Lesufi the award as Young Player of the Tournament
"Winning the overall top player award as a B3 player demonstrates world-class skill in the most competitive sight class He does not receive double runs, making his performance truly extraordinary Lesufi is a rising star and his success relies heavily on superior tracking and sharp reflexes, highlighting a dedication and focus that promises a bright future ”
