Tensions reach breaking point in Durbanville as the entire executive committee of the Community Police Forum (CPF) announced their resignation, bringing an abrupt end to their tenure yesterday (30 September). This came "after things fall apart very quickly under the new station commander", was stated in a media release
The executive committee, which has been serving for three and a half years, stated things went from bad to worse in September last year after a request for a meeting to discuss points of concern with the then new Durbanville police station commander, Col Gonum Munsamy, was declined by her
In a letter to CPF members about the resignation, it was stated that this decline by Munsamy for a meeting with the Durbanville CPF led to a deadlock, whereafter a formal police investigation was opened in mid February, according to the media release
COMPLAINTSLODGEDAGAINST STATIONCOMMANDER
According to the media release, despite having an excellent relationship with the previous station commander and all members of the Durbanville police, the relationship with Munsamy, who was appointed in May last year, quickly deteriorated
D’villeCPF callsitquits
handed over a letter in September last year to the station commander to list concerns which they would like to discuss This request was immediately denied and what followed, forced the Durbanville CPF to lodge complaints against the station commander
"These included referring to the residents of Fisantekraal as 'people who think they can have special privileges' that they are 'demanding', 'self-entitled' and 'spoilt' and calling a Fisantekraal councillor 'a skelm' , " reads the media release
Further complaints include "making false statements as to racial and cultural insults made against her by members attending a Durbanivlle CPF public meeting, refusing to meet with the community to discuss their concerns, stating that she is not accountable to the community contrary to various sections and principles contained in the Constitution (Act 108 of 1996), and stating that she will halt “actions to address any query or complaints regarding Durbanville police”, and as such neglecting her duties as station commander
"It came to a point where the members

In a very unfortunate turn of events, the Denny’s Fresh Mushrooms Cape Town facility near Fisantekraal will close its doors before the end of January next year after being in business for 40 years The closure of the business, which was established in 1986, will affect 376 employees, of whom 70% is from Fisantekraal and Durbanville, says Natasha Evason, communications and investor relations manager on enquiry by TygerBurger
CHALLENGES
Libstar, of which Denny’s Fresh Mushrooms Cape Town is part of, announced the decision of the closure on 16 September at the announcement of its first-half year results
"The facility has unfortunately been operating at a sustained loss due to structural production challenges, including rising input costs, resource constraints and biosecurity pressures
“Despite extensive negotiations, no viable commercial agreements could be secured to safeguard the site’s long-term future As a result, Libstar has commenced

"Wherever possible, Libstar is working to absorb staff into other business units and is engaging transparently with stakeholders to support employees and the surrounding farming community
Given the current labour consultations and processes underway, no further details can be shared at this stage," she says
Charl de Villiers, chief executive officer of Libstar, says closing the facility has been an incredibly difficult, but necessary decision given the site’s ongoing losses and the structural pressures that have made its recovery unviable

AI camera initiative boosts safety

Artificial intelligence has officially entered the public safety landscape through the Northern Suburbs Camera Initiative (NSCI), an AI-powered project rolled out across multiple suburbs on Friday
A collaborative effort between Buzybuy, a local internet service provider, and key security stakeholders, the NSCI AI Building and Control Centre was inaugurated in Brackenfell, marking a new chapter in community-based crime prevention
Through this public-private initiative, Buzybuy aims to provide advanced AI surveillance tools to support smarter policing, improved crime detection, and enhanced public safety
The newly unveiled, state-of-the-art AI control room is central to the project and is designed to serve as a hub for neighbourhood watches, private security firms, and law enforcement agencies
“The vision for this initiative started in 2021, with the installation of motiondetection cameras in Brackenfell, Durbanville, Kraaifontein, and Kuils River Since then, these cameras have led to numerous arrests and a noticeable decrease in property-related crimes,” said Nicholas Georghiou, chief operating officer at Buzybuy
members monitor activity around the clock Suspicious incidents are flagged and reported to security stakeholders via dedicated Telegram groups
COLLABORATION
Georghiou also highlighted that the control centre includes shared spaces for collaboration among neighbourhood watch teams and other crime-fighting entities
“Live monitoring plays a vital role in proactive crime prevention, and our goal
Ward 8 councillor Johann Loots says this community-based camera initiative is yet another great example of how resources can be combined to address crime and enable community safety by proactively monitoring different areas with the various camera options
Thanking the NSCI, Community Policing Forum chair Norman Landry says the facility will play a critical role in improving safety and security in the community
in Johannesburg will continue to operate, supplying Denny’s national volumes "While this site can meet ongoing market demand, the fresh mushrooms business remains under longterm review as we sharpen our focus on value-added food categories Libstar remains committed to engaging openly with employees, customers, and industry stakeholders throughout this process,” he says
The Denny fresh mushroom farm in KwaZulu-Natal was destroyed in a fire in September 2022 and the assets will also be sold
Bootcamp to explore manhood and faith
All men are invited to the Wild at Heart Bootcamp event, hosted by The Lions of the Lamb from 16 to 19 October
The event, which will be held at the Heaven's View Mountain Resort in McGregor, is now open for registration.
"Are you a man feeling weighed down by life s challenges - whether in marriage, family or your personal journey? Or perhaps you’re seeking a deeper connection with other men in a raw, authentic setting? The Lions of the Lamb Bootcamp, inspired by John Eldredge’s bestselling book Wild at Heart, offers a transformative experience designed to help men rediscover their strength and purpose," invite the organisers. Unlike typical men’s retreats, the Wild at Heart Bootcamp takes a bold approach. It dives into the core questions of manhood - exploring deep passions, desires and the wounds sustained in life’s battles. Through sessions, quiet reflection, films, outdoor adventures and downtime, participants are invited to connect with God and uncover profound truths about their own hearts.
“This isn’t about pressure to ‘shape up',” say the camp organisers. “It’s an honest, no-nonsense journey into manhood, fatherhood, faith and what it means to live life as it was meant to be ” The camp promises to equip men to return to their families, workplaces and communities renewed and empowered.

Opera meets fashion
Opera UCT brings a glittering twist to Johann Strauss II’s beloved operetta Die Fledermaus this October, celebrating both the composer’s 200th birthday and World Opera Day in a production bursting with couture, comedy and charisma. Directed by Christine Crouse, this isn’t your grandmother’s operetta. With bold costumes, cheeky storytelling and Strauss’s unforgettable waltzes and arias including the famous “Mein Herr Marquis” (The Laughing Song) the production promises a feast for the senses. The show’s centrepiece, a lavish party scene in Act 2, sets the stage for a night of theatrical revelry
In true Fledermaus fashion, audiences are encouraged to dress the part especially on Gala Night, Saturday 25 October Masks are optional but absolutely encouraged, so channel your inner masquerader and join Cape Town’s fashionistas and opera glitterati for an evening of mischief and elegance
PERFECTINTRODUCTION
For the uninitiated, an operetta is opera’s lighter, flirtier cousin packed with humour, dance, and dazzling music. It’s a perfect introduction for newcomers, and a delight for seasoned operagoers. Celebrated fashion designer Gavin Rajah brings theatrical flair to the stage with daring, contemporary silhouettes and clever bat-inspired motifs (a nod to the title Die Fledermaus means “The Bat” in German), perfectly paired with Allegra Bernacchioni’s fresh and stylish set design
Musical direction is by Jeremy Silver, head of Opera UCT, who says: “Fledermaus is pure, fizzy fun, but vocally and theatrically demanding. The cast has risen to the challenge in spectacular fashion.” . Tickets range from R100 to R500 and are available at Webtickets.

LEWENSKIEKIE
Nee Selfone? Tablette in skole?

Call on Kuils River business community to step up
A quiet concern is growing among community leaders and parents in Kuils River: a noticeable lack of structured activities and positive outlets for the area’s youth
This observation points to a deeper issue of youth inactivity, which community advocates warn is a fertile ground for increased crime, antisocial behaviour, and long-term social challenges
On any given afternoon groups of young people can be seen with nowhere to go and little to do While not inherently problematic, this idleness, experts say, creates a vacuum that can easily be filled by negative influences
When young people are disengaged, without positive channels for their energy and creativity, they become vulnerable Boredom can quickly turn into mischief, petty crime, or worse, as they seek belonging and excitement elsewhere We are seeing the early signs of this and it is a cycle we must break
The dangers extend beyond crime Inactivity contributes to poor physical health, mental health struggles like depression and anxiety, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness about the future The result is not only a threat to the safety of the community but also a tragic waste of potential talent and ambition
Whose responsibility is it to address this?
While local government and non-profit organisations strive to make an impact, their resources are stretched thin There is a growing consensus that a crucial partner is missing from the equation: local business
Businesses in Kuils River can no longer afford to focus solely on their bottom line while the community around them faces a dire need The health of a business is intrinsically tied to the health of its community A community plagued by crime, hostility,
Spoil grandma and grandpa
The International Day of Older People is observed on 1 October each year On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna international Plan of Action on Ageing, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly The holiday was observed for the first time on 1 October 1991 In 1991, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons In 2002, the Second World Assembly on Ageing adopted The Political Declaration and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing to respond to the opportunities and challenges of population ageing in the 21st century and to promote the development of a society for all ages
The number of older people (defined as those aged 65 years or older) tripled from around 260 million in 1980 to 761 million in 2021 Between 2021 and 2050, the global share of the older population is projected to increase from less than 10% to around 17% In societies with aging populations, it becomes imperative to adjust to the increasing number of elderly individuals who possess a diverse range of functional capacities
The capability to carry out essential functions and partake in everyday activities is influenced not solely by an individual's inherent capacity but also by the social and physical environments in which they reside Supportive environments such as family friends churches and local government play a pivotal role in assisting older persons to maintain their activity levels and independence as they progress in age
Older Persons Week is celebrated from 26 September to 2 October this year
Spoil grandpa and grandma by visiting or phone them If they stay far away video chat with them But what about an “appreciation day”? ‘n Ope brief aan die Stad Kaapstad
and a disengaged youth is bad for business It can deter customers make it difficult to attract and retain employees, and create an environment of instability that stifles economic growth
The notion of corporate social responsibility must move from being a peripheral PR exercise to a core business strategy We are not asking for handouts
We are asking for partnership We need businesses to come on board and be genuine partners in community development
This partnership can take many forms: sponsoring local sports teams funding after-school art and music programmes, offering their premises for workshops, providing mentors, or creating dedicated internship and learnership opportunities for school-leavers The investment needed is not solely financial; expertise, time, and infrastructure are equally valuable
The long-term payoff of such investment is immense By helping to create a network of youth centres, sports leagues, and skills-development workshops to mention just a few, local businesses would be investing in a future generation of employees, customers, and community leaders They would help foster a culture of positivity, inclusivity, and pride, directly countering the allure of crime and antisocial behaviour
Transforming Kuils River from a potential hotspot of youth discontent into a hub of opportunity requires a collective effort
The youth need guidance and outlets, the community needs safety and hope Local businesses have a unique power and resources to help provide both The time for waiting is over The call is for Kuils River’s business community to step up and become the architects of a safer, more vibrant, and prosperous future for all FEZEKILE COTANI, Soneike, Kuils River

Residentsunitetotacklelitter
Atotal of 237 bags of litter - amounting to 1 070kg - was collected by volunteers of the Mosselbank River Conservation Team (MRCT) in Fisantekraal and Greenville on Saturday 20 September to celebrate World Clean-up Day.
The MRCT was recently awarded as the best resident performance team or project in the Western Cape at the 10th Service Excellence Awards of the Western Cape government According to Danielle Cronje, co-founder of the MRCT, they continue to stand at the forefront of environmental care and community well-being
CONSERVATIONEFFORTS
"Our mission is to protect the Mosselbank river through education, awareness and hands-on conservation efforts Taking part in World Clean Up Day is therefore a natural extension of this mission This global initiative unites millions of volunteers in tackling the pressing issue of solid waste, including marine debris, which has become one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time," she says
This year marked MRCT’s seventh World Clean-up Day event in Greenville, Fisantekraal Over the past six years, MRCT has successfully collected 5,5 tons of general waste and 1 032 kg of recyclables from this event alone - a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when communities come together with a shared purpose, Cronje says
CHILDRENVOLUNTEERED
This year, 101 volunteers officially registered for the clean-up, with an additional 50 participants joining informally
"Importantly, a large proportion of these
volunteers were children and young people - 38 volunteers aged between 10 and 19 years, and 32 aged aged between 4 and 9 years
"This reflects one of our core prioritiesto engage and educate the youth, helping to build a culture of environmental responsibility that will shape the future By learning at a young age that their actions matter, children are empowered to become the custodians of a cleaner, healthier planet," she says
The clean-up concentrated on the open spaces surrounding the eastern tributary of the Mosselbank river
"These areas are particularly vulnerable, as litter carried by the wind inevitably makes its way into the river system, polluting the water and harming ecosystems all the way downstream to the ocean
"Volunteers also worked directly in the river itself, where plastic packaging had caused significant pollution Thanks to their efforts, 11 bags of plastic waste were removed from the water, underscoring the critical role of ongoing environmental stewardship," Cronje says
Items collected include plastic bottles, plastic and cardboard packaging, chip packets, shopping bags, diapers, garden waste and prescription pills, among others A total of 55kg of the waste will be recycled by LW Recycling and Trade
TAKEOWNERSHIP
"Community clean-ups are more than one-day events - they are opportunities for ordinary citizens to take ownership of their shared environment When individuals step forward to help, they not only remove harmful waste but also set an example of responsibility and care Each bag of litter collected means less pollution
in our rivers, less plastic in our oceans and a healthier ecosystem for both people and wildlife, Cronje says "We extend our heartfelt thanks to our partners and sponsors, PlasticsSA, the City of Cape Town's department of water and sanitation, the Durbanville Lions Club and the Pebble Project Their support makes it possible to mobilise volunteers and maximise our impact," she says . ARace brings fun and fitness
In Touch Athletic Club hosted the 14th annual Voet of the Wine Route road races on Sunday 28 September starting and finishing at Zevenwacht Mall
This year pre-entries sold out ahead of the event Brigett Smit of the organising committee said they were overwhelmed by the support "We were thrilled that we were sold out in terms of our permit requirements, but sad that we had to
turn away so many of our friends in the running community "
There were around 1500 finishers across the three distances - a 5km fun run, a 10 km and a half marathon (21,1 km)
"We are grateful to our community, especially our residents who were directly impacted by the race We thank them for their continued support and understanding," Smit said
