‘Barney’

se vroue distansieer hulself van hom

‘Rolmodel’ vra respek

Vasiliki Patrinos, namens Peters kruisondervra.

lon-tablette in. Elke bottel is glo vir R60 verkoop, sê hy.

Appointment lambasted

The secondment of Busisiwe Mgaguli as acting municipal manager (MM) of the Sol Plaatje Municipality in Kimberley has sparked fierce controversy.

Opposition parties and community groups demand answers over the appointment of an official with a fraud conviction to lead the embattled municipality.

The DA has requested an urgent special council meeting to interrogate the recommendation and appointment, demanding that all relevant documentation relating to Mgaguli’s work history be tabled for council consideration.

Her appointment was confirmed during a closed council meeting on 1 October, raising questions about transparency and governance at a time when the municipality is already reeling from allegations of financial misconduct against its suspended MM, Thapelo Matlala.

The Nelspruit Regional Court granted the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) a confiscation order against Mgaguli for the money she had defrauded from the Mpumalanga Department of Finance to be paid back. In 2011 and 2012, whilst employed as senior manager of the Provincial Fiscal Discipline Unit, Mgaguli submitted false travelling and subsistence allowance claims totalling over R500 000, which was paid into her personal bank account.

In 2013, she pleaded guilty to fraud charges under section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act. Following her guilty plea, the AFU successfully obtained a confiscation order from the

High Court. Mgaguli was ordered to repay the defrauded amount with interest to the curator bonis, ultimately paying back over R780 000 to the Department of Finance.

The DA’s Sol Plaatje caucus leader, Heinrich Pieterse, expressed outrage that the matter was listed as confidential on the special council meeting agenda.

“The DA was not afforded the opportunity to scrutinise the curriculum vitae of the candidate, or have knowledge of who the candidate was, other than being made aware that the appointment would be a secondment,” Pieterse stated.

In response to media questions, the Northern Cape Provincial Treasury defended the appointment, stating that Mgaguli’s conviction was disclosed during the recruitment process and that she met the criteria for criminal record expungement under Section 271B of the Criminal Procedure Act.

The Treasury noted that Mgaguli had been appointed to the Northern Cape Provincial Treasury in February 2012 and was promoted to chief director of Municipal Financial Management in November 2023. Upon discovering full details of her conviction and repayment agreement with the Mpumalanga Provincial Treasury, the department issued her a final written warning.

Treasury argued that the appointment was based on several considerations: the offence occurred more than a decade ago; she had demonstrated cooperation with authorities; had no further infractions; and the criminal record was in the process of being expunged. The appointment panel found her to be “the most meritorious

candidate”.

Tebogo Monyo, spokesperson for Bentley Vass, MEC of the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), says Mgaguli is not a permanently appointed employee of the municipality.

“The council resolved to request the MEC to second a person to act as municipal manager. The secondment is for a period that started on 29 September to 29 October. At the time of secondment to the municipality, the department was not aware of any criminal matters against Ms Mgaguli.”

The VF Plus, through MPL Theo Joubert, demanded clarification on the secondment, pointing out that Mgaguli previously served as acting municipal manager at the Phokwane Municipality from 2020 to 2021, where legal action followed over the validity of her appointment.

Joubert noted that during the recent Human Rights Commission’s public hearings on local government, Commissioner Henk Boshoff referenced media reports about the appointment and criminal conviction. Coghsta’s official response was that the conviction “occurred more than ten years ago”.

The commissioner expressed concern about the redeployment of officials involved in irregularities.

“A criminal record does not expire after ten years, and such a record must still be taken into account when someone is considered for a senior management position, especially where public funds and administrative authority are involved,” Joubert said.

Mgaguli did not respond to requests for comment.

According to organisers, the festival aims to develop professional dance performance in the province, provide arts management workshops to improve dancers' skills, and create employment opportunities for young choreographers, directors, costume designers, and producers.

The programme also facilitates inter-provincial, national and international exchange programmes, technical skill transfers, and school outreach initiatives.

Dance Pages has established

itself as the only free dance platform for young professionals and artists in the region. To date, it has impacted 40 arts organisations, 48 schools, eight communities and 35 small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs).

Through MDA, several dancers have received national awards and opportunities to participate in national productions and championships.

To ensure accessibility, most performances are free of charge. The main show on Saturday at 13:00 carries an entrance fee of R50 per person, featuring both professional and emerging dancers.

miljard, biljoen, triljoen

miljard = 1 000 000 000 (Engels: “billion”); biljoen = 1 000 000 000 000 (“trillion”); en triljoen = 1 000 000 000 000 000 000 (“quintillion”).

Eie aan haar aard leer sy my toe so mooi.

Toe kyk Ouma Plaas so oor Twyfelhoek se vlaktes en sê: Maar nog bitterder as gal en erger as galbitter is ’n bitter mens. Hulle word selfs bitterbekke genoem. Oppas vir bitterbekke, my kind.

Bekende leier rig roete

Dit was al heelwat later as verwag toe hulle by haar man opdaag.

Want hul lewe, soos hare, is nou onomkeerbaar gekluister.

’n vol kerk in Upington gesê.

Dawid Willemse, ds.

Tools granted to trade, grow

With the backing of an enterprise development programme, Kuruman entrepreneur Bontle Lehula has expanded and strengthened her guesthouse and restaurant business.

As one of 17 entrepreneurs who graduated from the training programme, Lehula has gained knowledge, resources, and confidence to grow her business and better serve her community. Recognising the need for comfortable, clean, and affordable accommodation in her town, Lehula founded her business, Back to the Moon, to serve travellers and locals.

Funded by Reisa and implemented by Raizcorp, the programme provided her and other beneficiaries with business guidance, entrepreneurship training, specialist advice, market access, and administrative support. Additionally, she received a starter pack, complete with a laptop, printer, and inverter, helping her manage operations more efficiently.

“The programme gave me the knowledge and support to grow my business to the level I have always envisioned. This support has had a greater impact on my business than any other intervention I have experienced. I will remain forever grateful to Reisa,” said Lehula.

A graduation ceremony marked the culmination of a six and 12-month programme aimed at strengthening local small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs). It equipped entrepreneurs with the tools and skills to compete at higher levels, driving job creation and economic growth.

“Supporting small businesses means supporting families, creating jobs, and sustaining the local economy. We are proud to see entrepreneurs like Bontle take what they have learned and make a real difference in their communities,” said Shariefa Rhode, social performance manager for Reisa Solar.

Graduates will continue to receive post-training support, including grant funding, to help sustain and grow their businesses.

Service at his heart

The well-known spokesperson for the police in the Northern Cape, Lt Col. Sergio Kock, bid farewell to the SAPS after 24 years of loyal and dedicated service.

He will be transitioning full time into the ministry at TD Church in Kimberley to leverage his skills and passion for serving humanity in a new capacity.

“This calling aligns my heart for people with my faith, still enabling me to make a meaningful impact in our community. I am thankful for the lessons learned, the triumphs celebrated, and the challenges overcome during my time in law enforcement. These experiences will undoubtedly enrich my ministry, allowing me to serve with empathy, wisdom, compassion, and the love of Christ.

“As I embark on this new chapter, I am eager to bring hope, healing and support to those in need of experiencing the love of Jesus Christ and be discipled to change their world.”

Kock said he was excited to work closely with the church community, schools, places of rehabilitation, government and non-government organisations (NGOs) in serving as a vessel of God’s love and grace.

“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, especially my family, church, Brig. Mashay Gamieldien and our marvellous communications team.

“As I swap the camera and pen for my continuous walk with God in His Word, I truly look

forward to staying connected to you,” said Kock. The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lt Gen. Koliswa Otola, as well as the provincial management, wish Kock success on his new journey.

They deeply appreciate the contributions he has made in strengthening the image of the SAPS.

Project quells hunger pangs

The Namaqua National Park, through the Corporate Social Investment (CSI) funding, donated four vegetable gardens as part of its Greening Programme and reopened soup kitchens in the community of Soebatsfontein and surrounding towns on 30 September. The closure of vegetable gardens and soup kitchens located in Soebatsfontein, Hondeklip Bay, Kommagas, and Kamieskroon due to insufficient funds and lack of resources placed more than 400 community members at risk of malnutrition.

Through the CSI funding and facilitation of the South African National Parks (SANParks), the essential infrastructure and resources needed to restart these facilities have now been secured.

In addition to funding, SANParks will provide mentorship and mechanisation training to

local greening and gardening projects that face challenges. These initiatives aim to foster self-sufficiency, support food security, and create sustainable small businesses.

Cherishing nature’s offerings

The Mokala National Park, one of South Africa's lesser-known parks, is a hidden gem offering a rich diversity of wildlife and amazing scenic beauty.

Members of the South African National Parks (SANParks) Honorary Rangers Diamantveld Region decided to offer a family fun day on 27 September to raise awareness of the park and to educate the youth on conservation. The day coincided with the SANParks Open Parks week, and activities were organised for the whole family. These included educational displays, demonstrations, guided tours at the Interpretation Centre and a tree tag “treasure hunt”.

During the day, members were on duty at several activity points. At the Lilydale restcamp, cupcakes and toffees were handed out and visitors told about Mokala.

At the Kameeldoring picnic spot, visitors had to guess the length of antelope horns and learn about how horns are

scientifically measured.

At the bird-hide other members assisted visitors with a bird book and more information.

Visitors had the opportunity to be guided through the Interpretaion Centre and learnt about the history of Mokala and the surrounding area.

At the Matopi picnic site visitors were provided with information on the park. ,

At the Mosu rest camp visitors received more information on trees, and honorary rangers showed a variety of tree seeds.

Breaking down not a weakness

Mental health affects every part of our lifefrom how we think and feel to how we work, connect, and cope. October is Mental Health Awareness Month a time to talk openly, support each other, and break the silence around emotional wellbeing.

This year’s theme is Strong Minds Matter, reminding us that mental health is just as important as physical health. Whether you are a parent, teacher, mine worker, student, or community leader, your mental wellbeing matters, and so does the wellbeing of those around you.

Mental health is our ability to handle stress, build relationships, and make decisions. When we are mentally well, we feel motivated, connected, and resilient. When challenges arise, we may feel tired, anxious, withdrawn, or overwhelmed. These are signs that we need support, and that is okay.

Mental health challenges are common and treatable. They do not mean you are weak; they prove that you are human.

Depression is more than sadness. It is a medical condition that affects mood, energy, and daily functioning. Symptoms include persistent low mood, loss of interest, sleep changes, and feelings of guilt or hopelessness.

It is not just a bad mood, it is real and help is available.

Stigma is the shame or judgment people face when they talk about mental health. It can come from others or from ourselves. Some believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness, especially among men or in tough work environments. But the truth is: Talking about mental health is brave and healing.

Replace silence with support. Create spaces where people feel safe to speak up.

Stress is a normal response to pressure. When it builds up without rest or support, it can lead to burnout exhaustion, numbness, and loss of motivation. Rest is not laziness. It is recovery. Take breaks. Talk it out. Your wellbeing matters.

Strong communities check in, not just carry on. A simple “how are you?” can change someone’s day. Whether in a classroom, clinic, church, or workplace, peer support helps people feel seen, heard and valued.

Therefore, train peer supporters. Start meetings with check-ins. Look out for each other.

Mental health support is available through counselling, friends, helplines, and community groups. Asking for help is not a weakness it is a step toward healing.

Famsa can help, and Famsa can speak kindly and listen deeply. Share support contacts. Normalise asking for help. Encourage rest and check-ins. Break stigma, one conversation at a time.

Let us build strong minds, strong families, and a stronger community. Call Famsa on 053 723 1564.

Cyclists face the challenge

to finish it. Photo: Facebook/Oryx Endurance Event Management

Steeling themselves for the Battle of the Bikes, the start line in front of the Jacobsdal Inn was packed with cyclists on Saturday, 4 October.

They not only aimed to conquer this battle, but were ready for an experience filled with grit, speed, and community spirit.

What makes the event unique is that this “gratitude edition” – a fully supported, fun-filled event - charged no entry fees. Cyclists only had to register to be able to take part. Although medals were handed out, this free event had no cash prizes, but every participant gained the thrill of the ride and the challenge of the course.

In the 71km Full Battle Course, “warrior” Gerhard Germishuis was the first male to cross the finish line in 2:36:25, followed by Dewald Scheepers (2:36:29) on his heels, and Ryno du Plessis (2:42:22) in third place.

“For the first time ever in Central South Africa, riders will take on 200 miles (327 km) of pure gravel. It is not about winning, it is about finishing. Whether you cross the line first or last, you will be part of the very first chapter in the Unbound200 legacy.

“The gravel is raw and real, created by nature to be conquered by you,” as commented by organisers.

Celebrating 30 Years of McDonald’s South Africa

In 1994 as South Africa stepped boldly into democracy, Peter Moyanga took a leap of his own - one that would help shape the story of McDonald s in the country. His journey from corporate corridors to respected franchisee is a story of resilience, vision, and heart

“My journey with McDonald s began when a representative from McDonald’s Turkey approached me,” Peter recalls. “I had no idea that conversation would spark a decades-long relationship with a brand that has become both my passion and my purpose.”

Initially recruited as South Africa’s real estate representative Peter was tasked with identifying the very first McDonald’s locations. By April 1, 1995 - a date etched in his memory - he was enroute to Australia for training “I ll never forget stepping into a McDonald s and being immersed in its world of QSC&V: Quality, Service, Cleanliness, and Value It felt like theatre and I was hooked.”

For nearly a decade, he served in corporate leadership - managing real estate operations, and field services, and eventually being named Corporate MD designate But the pull of ownership proved stronger “Even in corporate, I

treated every role as if I owned the business. Eventually, I realised it was time to truly bet on myself.”

In 2003, Peter transitioned from corporate to franchisee, acquiring a struggling restaurant in Springs many had written off. It had been marked for closure after the 9/11 downturn, but he saw potential others missed. “With the right people, the right plan, and the right energy, we turned it around and made it one of the best-performing restaurants in the country.” Years later, he repeated this success - reviving another market and expanding with two more restaurants

Today, Peter is the proud owner of Moyanga Family Foods, a business built not just on burgers and fries, but on people, values, and purpose. His management team boasts an average tenure of more than 12 years. “My success is their success. That’s why we’re called Moyanga Family Foods: it’s about trust, shared values, and family.”

Beyond the stores, Peter s impact reaches communities. His partnership with the Desperados Biker’s Club in Kuruman has created a cherished annual event uplifting locals, while his

restaurants support Ronald McDonald House Charities, offering families comfort during times of crisis. “Giving back is about ubuntu - it’s knowing that we rise by lifting others.”

Three decades in Peter remains most proud of the people he has empowered “McDonald s has been a vehicle for transformation I’ve watched crew members grow into leaders. That’s the true reward

As McDonald’s South Africa celebrates 30 years, Peter s focus is firmly on the future “The next 30 years will be defined by innovation, deeper community roots, and young people carrying the flame with pride. My advice? Embrace every opportunity with humility and passion This isn’t just a job it’s a platform for leadership and legacy.”

With eyes on the horizon and feet grounded in purpose, Peter Moyanga’s story is more than a personal triumph it’s a national treasure “No matter how far a stream flows, it always remembers its source. Legacy is not built by how far you go alone but by how many people you bring with you.”
