PARENT AMBASSADORS

Parent Ambassadors, PAs, are current parents who serve as liaisons and resources for a specific grade. Each grade has ambassadors who will communicate upcoming events, class activities, teacher appreciation events and more throughout the year. Be on the lookout for emails from your parent ambassadors throughout the year.

The Student Directory provides contact information for current students. This directory is available on MyCollegiate under “Directories” tab (you must be logged on to view the directory).

SCHOOL CLOSURES

If the school should need to close due to inclement weather or for an unforeseen emergency, the school will communicate with families via phone, email and text (they will come from 31706...please note this is a new number than in the past), on our website and through social media. In the event of inclement weather closures, notices also will be posted on local news stations. Ensure your contact information is correct by logging into MyCollegiate and reviewing and updating, if needed, your contact information.

SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS, SUPPLY LISTS, TEXTBOOKS

Students are required to complete summer assignments for their upcoming year. Links for the assignments, as well as the required textbooks (if applicable) and how to order them, and supply lists by grade are available on the Back to School resource board.

Parents and students are able to access the resource board by logging into MyCollegiate at NorfolkCollegiate.org and then toggling to the “Resources” tab. ALL PARENTS

Upload and complete the requirements for each student in Magnus Health before the first day of school, Aug. 21.

UPPER SCHOOL PARENTS

Purchase books (listed on Back to School Resource Board in MyCollegiate).

Label student’s name in books, calculators and clothing.

Plan to attend one of the following locker and new device set-ups: Aug. 19 from 8:3011 a.m.; Aug. 20 from 9-11 a.m.; and 3:30-5:30 p.m. Students will be able to access their lockers before school, after school and between classes.

The new school year is here and there is a flurry of orientation events you’ll want to make sure are on your calendar. Here is your divisional breakdown to ensure a smooth orientation. As always, we are here to help you, so please reach out to the appropriate division with your questions.

UPPER SCHOOL LOCKER & NEW DEVICE SET-UP

All upper school students are welcome to set up lockers from 8:30-11 a.m. so they are prepared for a smooth first day of classes. All new and returning students who have purchased a new device may come in to receive assistance connecting to the school’s network in the Collegiate Cafe. This can also be done during orientation. Please note all students should have their login information for MyCollegiate as well. This is required to use a device on the school’s network.

UPPER SCHOOL ORIENTATION

RETURNING STUDENT LOCKER AND NEW DEVICE SET-UP | 9 A.M.-11 A.M.

FRESHMEN & NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION | 10 A.M.-12:30 P.M.

Details | This is for freshmen (new and returning) and ALL new students in grades 9-12 to Norfolk Collegiate. This session will begin in the Hackney Theater in the Meredith Center for the Arts with families and students together.

• Students are NOT required to be in school dress.

• Students are invited to set up lockers at 9 a.m.

• Students returning to Collegiate will be released at 12 p.m.

• All new students to Collegiate will end the day at 12:30 p.m. after completing email, Internet and device setup. Please be sure to bring your fully charged device.

SIXTH GRADE ORIENTATION | 9-11:30 A.M.

Details | All sixth grade students (returning and new to Collegiate) should be dropped off at the middle school entrance on Suburban Parkway where they will meet their faculty advisors and classmates. The Parent Orientation session will start at 11 a.m. in the Hackney Theater.

• Students are NOT required to be in school dress for orientation.

• Students should bring their fully charged devices and any other materials for setting up their lockers.

NEW SEVENTH & EIGHTH GRADE STUDENT ORIENTATION | 9-11:30 A.M.

Details | All new seventh and eighth grade students should be dropped off at the middle school entrance on Suburban Parkway where they will meet their faculty advisors and classmates. PRE-K4 GRADE 5 NEW STUDENT & PARENT ORIENTATION | 8:30-9:30 A.M.

Details | This is a wonderful opportunity for our NEW students and their parents to become more acquainted with Collegiate. Please join us for this informative time together and don’t forget to bring your school supplies. Pre-K4 and Kindergarten students will go directly to their classrooms and students in grades 1 through 5 will go to the Spainhour Family Library. All family members will then join administrators in the auditorium.

OPEN HOUSE FOR RETURNING STUDENTS | 10 A.M.-NOON

Details | All returning students and parents are requested to join us at our Open House. This is a great time for your students to settle into their new learning environments and unpack supplies.

PRE-K3 PLAY DATE & ORIENTATION | 10-10:30 A.M.

Details | All pre-K3 students and their parents are invited to our orientation. We hope you join us and get to know your classmates at the lower school and take this opportunity to drop off supplies.

ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL

UPPER SCHOOL

GRANBY STREET

Parents should enter the Meredith Center for the Arts parking lot from Granby Street and proceed toward the main lobby entrance near the Scribner Belltower.

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES 7:30-8 A.M.

1. The main lobby entrance will be unlocked at 7:30 a.m.

2. Students who arrive between 7:30-8 a.m. must remain in the lobby.

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES FOR MORNING BAND AND CHORUS

1. Band and Chorus will begin meeting after Labor Day.

2. Band students will meet in the Band Room and will enter through the upper school main lobby entrance between 7:20-7:25 a.m. Students will be greeted by upper school faculty/staff members.

3. Chorus students will meet in the chorus room in the Meredith Center for the Arts. They will enter the Meredith Center through the doors located by the chorus room between 7:20-7:25 a.m. That door is most easily accessed by entering the parking lot off of Granby Park Drive. Students will be greeted by upper school faculty/staff members.

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES BETWEEN 8-8:20 A.M.

1. Seniors will park in the lots located closest to the Upper School Gymnasium and will access them through the third parking lot entrance on Granby Street; however, they are not to park in the spaces in front of the Meredith Center for the Arts. Overflow parking for seniors and other student drivers is available on both sides of Suburban Parkway and the lot next to the Mathas Family Field. We ask that students do not block the school buses when using overflow parking. They will enter through the upper school lobby doors (illustrated on the map as ).

2. All other students may park along Suburban Parkway and the parking lot in front of the Mathas Family Field. Please note that parking by the Franklin Family Field is reserved for middle school faculty and staff only. Juniors will enter through the upper school main lobby entrance (illustrated on the map as ).

3. All students grades 9-12 will enter through the upper school main lobby entrance (illustrated on the map as ).

ARRIVAL PROCEDURES AFTER 8:18 A.M.

1. Any student arriving on campus after 8:18 a.m. will enter through the main lobby entrance where they will sign in.

2. Any student arriving after 8:20 a.m. to class or to campus will be marked tardy.

DISMISSAL:

Dismissal begins at 3:10 p.m.

1. Students are permitted to leave campus after dismissal and to return for pick-up, athletic practices or contests, play/musical practices, extra help, club meetings, etc.

2. Unless students are working with a teacher or coach, all students in grades 9-11 on campus after 3:30 p.m. are required to report to the Stanton Library until their rides arrive.

3. All students, with the exception of those in practices, performances or contests, must be picked up no later than 6 p.m. A late fee of $2 per minute will be applied to your tuition management account if your student(s) is not picked up by 6 p.m.

SUBURBAN PARKWAY

For your student’s safety, Norfolk Collegiate has blocked off certain sections of the parking lot to allow for safer drop-off and pick-up procedures. Parents should enter Suburban Parkway from Granby Street and proceed toward the middle school entrance. Please pull all the way forward when dropping off your students and picking them up in the afternoon to allow for a smoother experience for all families.

ARRIVAL:

1. All middle school students should enter through the main middle school doors.

2. Students who arrive between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. must go directly to the Extended/Before Care room and should register before attending.

3. Students arriving after 8 a.m. must go directly to their advisory for that day.

4. The band and strings instructor will be in touch regarding procedures for entering the building for the morning strings class. Morning strings will begin after Labor Day.

DISMISSAL:

1. Students will be dismissed to the following locations:

• Carpool

• Athletics or other Extracurricular Activities

• Extended Care

2. Dismissal begins at 3:10 p.m. All students leaving at 3:10 p.m. will go directly outside to the carpool line. Families who will be waiting for their students for a prolonged period of time when picking them up from carpool, athletics or aftercare are asked to please use the parking lots to avoid blocking in other families. These lanes are for families who will be waiting briefly while their students exit the buildings. We appreciate your cooperation.

3. Students remaining at school after 3:30 p.m. will go directly to the Extended Care room unless they are working with a teacher, club or in athletics.

4. Students working with a teacher or with a club will report directly to that teacher. Students participating in athletics will go directly to practice or Extended Care room before practice or after practice while waiting for pick-up.

5. All students, with the exception of those in practices, performances or contests, must be picked up no later than 5:30 p.m. A late fee of $2 per minute will be applied to your tuition management account if your student(s) is not picked up by 5:30 p.m.

ROTATION SCHEDULE

MIDDLE & UPPER SCHOOL

Middle and upper school students follow a rotating schedule, as illustrated below. The schedule is determined by the day, such as Day 1 or Day 2. These days are noted by green acorns in the printed calendar. Copies of the schedule below are provided to all middle and upper school students, as well as faculty and staff. Additional copies are available for purchase in the Collegiate Corner at the middle and upper school.

The Tidewater Drive entrance is only open from 7-8:30 a.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m. At all other times, please use the Willow Wood Drive entrance.

MORNING CARE (7:30-7:55 A.M.) BEGINS SEPT. 2

Students who arrive before 7:55 a.m. will be directed to Morning Extended Care in the cafeteria. Students are to enter through the far door along the side of the school adjacent to Tidewater Drive and the fields.

1. When entering the parking lot from Tidewater Drive: Please take a right at the stop sign and follow the arrows to take a U-turn to then become parallel to the sidewalk by the side entrance (illustrated with yellow arrows above).

2. Please remain in your car through the entire drop-off process. When entering the parking lot from Willow Wood Drive: Please follow the driveway towards the fields, make a U-turn, and pull over by the sidewalk by the entrance.

3. Please remain in your car until the a faculty or staff member opens the door and directs your student to the door and to the cafeteria.

SCHOOL ARRIVAL (7:55-8:15

A.M.)

Beginning at 7:55 a.m., cars will be directed to join the carpool arrival line. Please enter the lower school campus from the Tidewater Drive entrance or the Willow Wood Drive entrance and proceed to the front of the lower school.

1. Pull your car forward to the front of the drop–off area (adjacent to playground) and keep moving forward as cars leave. There are times when a faculty member or guard will ask you to move your car forward before allowing your student to leave your car.

2. Beginning at 8 a.m., a faculty or staff member will open the students’ car door and assist them to the school door. As the year progresses, a student Safety Patrol member will assist in this process.

3. Please have your students exit through the passenger side so that they may enter the building quickly and safely. This way your students will be arriving and exiting the sidewalk rather than in approaching traffic. Also, please, have your student’s book bags with them in the car rather than in the trunk.

• Pre-K students will enter through the second entrance, closest towards the playground. Pre-K students will be escorted to their classroom by an adult or fifth grade safety patrol volunteer.

• Students in Kindergarten through Grades 5 may enter the building through the front entrance or through the second entrance, closest towards the playground.

4. Once you’ve dropped off your passenger, you may exit from the Tidewater Drive or the Willow Wood Drive exit.

AFTERNOON DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

Any student leaving school before 3 p.m. dismissal must submit a parental note to the school office or provide verbal parental permission or send an email to Debra Kraus in the front office at 757.625.0471 or dkraus@norfolkcollegiate.org Please notify the office by 2 p.m. for any dismissal changes pertaining to your student.

SCHOOL DISMISSAL (3-3:15 P.M.)

1. Any parents wanting to personally walk up to pick up their students may park in the side parking lot (adjacent to Tidewater Drive) and stand in the designated parent pick-up area along the sidewalk. A faculty member will send your student to that area (illustrated on map as ). Please remember to bring your dismissal placard to expedite the process and to ensure a safe dismissal process.

2. Students departing from school in cars will be dismissed at 3 p.m. in the curb area of the front entrance to the school building (adjacent to Willow Wood drive entrance).

3. Name placards will need to be visibly displayed in the passenger side window as we will be calling all students individually to the car dismissal area as cars arrive.

• Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 2 will be dismissed individually as the car approaches the second entrance (adjacent to the playground).

• Grades 3-5 will stand in the front entrance area.

4. Lower school students will stay with a teacher until dismissed to a parent. For safety reasons, no lower school student will be allowed to leave the curb side until the teacher dismisses them.

5. Pull your car forward to the front of the drop–off area (adjacent to playground) and keep moving forward as cars leave. There are times when a faculty member or guard will ask you to move your car forward before allowing your student to enter your car.

6. Please note that teachers and staff are not permitted to assist your student with car seats or seat belts at dismissal. If your student needs assistance with their seat belt, please pull all the way forward or into a parking space to assist. To maintain a safe traffic flow, please do NOT exit your car unless you are pulled into a parking space.

ENRICHMENT (TIMES MAY VARY)

Lower school will be offering various enrichments both before and after school, including band, strings and various clubs, which will be communicated at a later date.

1. After school enrichments dismiss from the front entrance.

2. Parents need to show their carpool placard to the security guard or staff member on duty.

3. Pull forward to the front of the carpool area (adjacent to playground) and remain in your car until your student is escorted out.

4. Students not picked up within 10 minutes of the completion of the enrichment program will be escorted to Extended Care if they are previously registered for this program. Those students not registered for Extended Care will be billed $2 per minute until the student is retrieved.

EXTENDED CARE (3:15-5:30 P.M.) BEGINS SEPT. 2

The lower school day dismissal process ends by 3:15. Any remaining students who are NOT registered for Extended Care will be billed $2 per minute until the student is retrieved, starting at 3:15 p.m. Students registered for the Extended Care Program will be escorted to that location starting at 3:15 p.m. Students must be registered for Extended Care to attend, even if a family is using the “drop-in” option. Registration information can be located in the Extended Care resource board on MyCollegiate. Afternoon care students will be supervised in grade level groups and are assigned to classrooms. Students MUST be picked up by an authorized adult.

Upper School Extended Care

No changes; however, a friendly reminder that the upper school requires students who arrive from 7:30-8 a.m. to remain in the lobby. After 3:30 p.m., unless students are working with a teacher or coach, students in grades 9-11 are required to report to the Stanton Library, which is supervised until 6 p.m., until their rides arrive. All students, with the exception of those in practices, performances or contests, must be picked up no later than 6 p.m.

Students have physical education and recess daily, outside, weather permitting. All students should wear closed-toed shoes to protect their feet and provide proper support for outdoor activities. Please note, athletic shoes and socks must be worn for physical education each day. Students may be asked to observe or sit out during physical activity if they are wearing something other than athletic shoes and socks.

NEW OAKS FOR 2025-26

Ros Dempsey, Fifth Grade Teacher

Ros Dempsey is joining the faculty full-time as a fifth grade teacher, after previously serving as a substitute. Originally from the United Kingdom, Mrs. Dempsey brings a creative and community-minded spirit to the classroom, along with deep experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds.

She most recently taught Year 5 at the British International School of Washington, where she helped lead global curriculum development efforts and supported school-wide initiatives in student well-being and digital learning. Before earning her Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), Mrs. Dempsey volunteered at schools and children’s charities in Nairobi, Kenya, and brings a background in leadership from her time as a Royal Navy officer and in senior roles within the financial services industry.

She holds a PGCE from the University of Sunderland and is passionate about fostering a positive, inclusive and engaging learning environment for all students. Mrs. Dempsey is mom to Matilda ’27 and Bea ’29.

Kiley Grace, Second Grade Teacher

Kiley Grace is joining our team as a second grade teacher, bringing nearly a decade of classroom experience. Most recently, she taught kindergarten at Point O’View Elementary in Virginia Beach, where she also supported summer school students through engaging, differentiated instruction in reading, writing and math.

Ms. Grace began her career teaching Kindergarten in Greenville, North Carolina, and has worked closely with English as a second language learners, special education students, and Response to Intervention (RTI) teams to help all students succeed. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from East Carolina University.

Bonnie Johnson, Middle & Upper School Learning Resource Coordinator

Bonnie Johnson is joining us as our new middle and upper school learning resource coordinator. She comes to us from Christ the King Catholic School, where she most recently served as interim principal, where she led daily operations, supported faculty transitions and fostered strong relationships across the school community. Before that, she served as assistant principal, where she oversaw instructional leadership, professional development and schoolwide curriculum development. Mrs. Johnson was instrumental in helping the school earn a Purple Star Recognition and served as a visiting team member for the Middle States Accreditation process.

She brings over 15 years of classroom and leadership experience to Collegiate, including time as an educational specialist and as a lower school teacher. She has deep expertise in literacy instruction, differentiated learning strategies, and social-emotional learning, and has led initiatives ranging from data-driven instruction to summer academic boot camps supported by grant funding.

She holds her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Specialist endorsement from the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education and a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

NEW OAKS FOR 2025-26

Rebecca Kostovny, Upper School Mathematics

We are excited to welcome Rebecca Kostovny full-time to Norfolk Collegiate as an upper school math teacher after serving as a long-term substitute last year. Ms. Kostovny brings nearly a decade of experience teaching high school mathematics in public and private schools across Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Throughout her career, Ms. Kostovny has consistently demonstrated a passion for helping students succeed by differentiating instruction and building nurturing, inclusive classroom environments. She has served as a mentor to new teachers, a leader of professional learning communities, and a co-advisor for Mu Alpha Theta, a national mathematics honor society. Known for her data-driven teaching style, she uses student performance data to inform instruction and boost achievement across all ability levels.

She holds a bachelor’s in Mathematics from Appalachian State University. Ms. Kostovny is eager to join the Collegiate community and looks forward to supporting students in and out of the classroom. We are thrilled to have her on our upper school faculty!

Randy Ladkau, Lower, Middle & Upper School Band Teacher

Randy Ladkau brings decades of professional performance and teaching experience back to Norfolk Collegiate as lower, middle and upper school band teacher. No stranger to our community, Mr. Ladkau previously worked with our lower school band students, and we’re excited to welcome him back to Collegiate.

A lifelong musician, Mr. Ladkau studied at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and earned his bachelor’s from Oakland University. He has taught brass, electric bass, guitar and instrumental ensembles for decades and serves as executive director of the Virginia Chamber Brass.

His distinguished career includes service in the U.S. Navy’s premier bands, where he held leadership roles in the U.S. Atlantic Fleet Band and U.S. Navy Band Great Lakes. He has performed ensembles such as Dizzy Gillespie, Doc Severinsen, Chuck Mangione and Lee Greenwood, the Virginia Symphony and the Motor City Jazz Quintet. Passionate about music education, Mr. Ladkau inspires students to grow as musicians and creative thinkers through skill, artistry and enthusiasm.

Ashleigh Lassiter, Upper School English & Yearbook

We are excited to welcome Ashleigh Lassiter back to Norfolk Collegiate as our upper school English and Yearbook teacher! A dynamic and self-driven educator, Mrs. Lassiter brings a strong foundation in literature and student-centered learning to the classroom.

Mrs. Lassiter previously taught English at Norfolk Collegiate and Booker T. Washington High School. In the years since, she has worked in the financial services industry, honing her skills in communication, organization and data management—all of which she brings back to the classroom with fresh perspective and energy. She is known for her ability to present complex ideas in clear, engaging ways and for fostering collaborative learning environments where students feel heard and supported.

In addition to teaching English, Mrs. Lassiter will lead the upper school Yearbook program, guiding students in design, storytelling and publication. She holds a master’s in Secondary Education from Old Dominion University and a bachelor’s in English and Studies in Women & Gender from the University of Virginia. We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Lassiter back to Collegiate and can’t wait to see her inspire and empower our students this school year!

NEW FACES FOR 2025-26

Whitney Shelton, Upper School Mathematics

Whitney Shelton is joining us as an upper school math teacher and will be coaching swimming, too. She brings more than nine years of high school classroom experience and a deep passion for helping students see the real-world relevance of mathematics. Ms. Shelton most recently worked as a special events coordinator at East Alabama Medical Center, where she sharpened her organizational and project management skills—all of which she’s excited to bring back into the classroom setting.

Prior to that, she taught high school math at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Tennessee, where she designed and delivered engaging, textbook-independent lesson plans and mentored new educators. She also served at Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering, where she integrated hands-on and tech-driven instruction to meet the diverse needs of her students. Ms. Shelton is known for fostering a collaborative, supportive learning environment while using innovative teaching strategies to build critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

She holds a bachelor’s in Mathematics from the University of Memphis. She is mom to Lydia ’35.

Taylor Wentworth, Upper School Mathematics & Computer Science

We’re excited to welcome Taylor Wentworth to Norfolk Collegiate as our new upper school math and computer science teacher after serving as a long-term substitute last year. With a strong foundation in mathematics education and data analysis, Ms. Wentworth brings a unique combination of teaching experience, technical skill and real-world application to the classroom. She previously served as a math tutor at Old Dominion University, where she supported college students in Algebra, Pre-Calculus and Statistics, tailoring her instruction to meet individual learning styles and needs.

Most recently, Ms. Wentworth worked as a graduate research assistant for the Hampton Roads Biomedical Research Consortium, analyzing complex datasets and developing statistical models. Before transitioning to education, she served in the U.S. Army as a Signals Intelligence Analyst.

Ms. Wentworth is passionate about helping students build confidence in math and apply critical thinking across disciplines—including computer science. Her adaptable, student-centered approach fosters collaboration, curiosity and a love for learning. In addition to her technical expertise, she brings a calm, supportive presence to the classroom. We’re thrilled to have Ms. Wentworth join our upper school faculty and can’t wait to see the impact she’ll have on our students!

NEW ROLES

Lil Acosta, Associate Director of Development for Events & Community Engagement

Lil Acosta is stepping into a new role as associate director of development for events and community engagement. In this position, she’ll lead fundraising and school-wide events — including those featuring guest speakers—and will manage the Collegiate Corner and its volunteers. Ms. Acosta will continue to strengthen our connections with local partners, volunteer groups and the broader Hampton Roads community. She joined us in 2020 and is mom to Layla ’31.

Garrett Booker, Upper School Social Studies

Garrett Booker is transitioning to a new role as an upper school social studies teacher after serving as a valued member of our middle school faculty. Mr. Booker brings extensive teaching experience from the secondary and collegiate levels, having previously taught at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and served as an adjunct history instructor at Tidewater Community College, San Diego Community College, Palo Mar Community College and Blinn College. He holds a master’s degree in history from Old Dominion University and a bachelor’s degree in history and anthropology from the University of Montana. In addition to his classroom work, Garrett is dad to Sophie ’34 and Hannah ’38.

Nelee Connors, Director of Learning Services

Nelee Connors has assumed the role of director of learning services, where she will oversee the learning resource program. Mrs. Connor’s experience at our school is well-suited to lead our continuing efforts to meet the educational needs of all our students. Mrs. Connors has been part of the Collegiate community since 2009, serving as a learning resource teacher for lower school students and providing academic support in reading, math and study skills. Known for her ability to partner with faculty, parents, and students, she is dedicated to helping each student reach their fullest potential. Her experience also includes private tutoring for students in Kindergarten through eighth grade, substitute teaching across all lower school subjects, and teaching in a Montessori classroom for students ages 3–6.

Mrs. Connors holds a master’s in reading from Towson University and a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in history from Washington College. She is mom to Finley ’21 and Mary Archer ’24.

Amy Cushman, Middle School Civics and English

We’re excited to welcome Amy Cushman back to the middle school as our Civics and English teacher. Amy first joined Collegiate in 2022 as the middle school administrative assistant after serving as a long-term upper school English substitute. She went on to teach middle and upper school English and has also coached Forensics.

Before Collegiate, Amy was the owner and managing partner of Ancora, a full-service training and consulting practice, bringing extensive experience in organizational development, leadership, facilitation, and mentoring. She holds a master’s degree in education and human development from George Washington University and a bachelor’s degree in communication arts and psychology from James Madison University.

Aarynn McMahon, Lower School Learning Resource Coordinator

Aarynn McMahon will continue serving in the Lower School Learning Resource Center, now as lower school learning resource coordinator. Mrs. McMahon responsibilities include coordinating and scheduling the lower school learning resource program, preparing student learning plans, working with Learning Resource Program students in small groups and individually, supporting faculty, and communicating with families regarding student progress. A former classroom teacher, reading specialist and tutor, Mrs. McMahon brings over a decade of experience supporting students in grades K–5, with particular strengths in reading, writing and upper elementary math. She holds a master’s degree in Reading from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston. Mrs. McMahon is mom to Mary Walsh ’29 and Rorie ’33.

Nicole Mottinger, Lower School Learning Specialist

Mrs. Mottinger is stepping out of the second grade classroom and into her new position as lower school learning specialist. Mrs. Mottinger brings a strong foundation in early childhood education, having taught first and second grade at Phenix Pre-K–8 and Kraft Elementary School in Hampton. She earned her master’s degree in early childhood education from Old Dominion University and is mom to Molly ’31 and Cole ’34.

Sarah Stradling, Advancement Operations Manager

We’re excited to share that Sarah Stradling has accepted a new role as our advancement operations manager. In this position, she’ll continue supporting our educational systems while also expanding her focus to include the advancement side of all things Collegiate, including working with Raiser’s Edge and Enrollment Management. Mrs. Stradling will also take the lead in coordinating advancement operations across the division and will lend her expertise to the admissions team by providing data analysis and conducting institutional research. We’re thrilled to see her grow in this new role and know her attention to detail and systems thinking will be a huge asset. She’s also mom to Wyatt ’27.

Dr. Kristine Varney, Assistant Head for Academics

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Kristine Varney has been appointed assistant head for academics. In this new role, Dr. Varney will oversee the academic program across all grade levels, ensuring that our curriculum, teaching practices and academic initiatives continue to challenge and inspire students while reflecting the school’s mission. Dr. Varney joined Norfolk Collegiate in 2022 as director of instruction. She has worked closely with the faculty and staff to strengthen teaching and learning through innovative strategies, professional development and a student-centered approach. Her leadership and professionalism has fostered collaborative growth among teachers, expanded opportunities for students and enhanced our commitment to academic excellence. She has extensive experience in research, curriculum design, instructional leadership and teacher coaching. We are fortunate to have Dr. Varney step into this new role guiding Norfolk Collegiate’s academic program as we prepare students to thrive as learners, leaders and engaged citizens in an ever-changing world.

Rebecca Zborowski, Standardized Testing Coordinator

Rebecca Zborowski will be expanding her responsibilities to include coordination of our standardized testing program across all divisions. While continuing her outstanding work as math department chair and middle and upper school scheduler, she will now also oversee testing logistics and data use. This new role will allow Mrs. Zborowski to help us make the most of the data we receive—using it to inform instruction and support meaningful enhancements to our curriculum schoolwide. Mrs. Zborowski is mom to Sadie ’31.
