Nishi Patel

National Director of Cardiac Imaging

Dr Nishi Patel, M D , primarily practices Cardiovascular Medicine at WellSpan York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania, where he specializes in evaluating and treating advanced forms of heart disease with a focus on heart failure and cardiac critical care. He also serves as the National Director of Cardiac Imaging for Access Physicians/SOC Telemedicine, a large multispecialty telemedicine group that focuses on improving access to subspecialty care for rural hospitals Within this role, he leads cardiac imaging initiatives related to echocardiography and cardiac CT imaging

Although still early in his medical career, Dr Patel has already earned several notable achievements and recognitions that reflect his expertise, commitment, and growing impact in the field:

Dr. Patel’s Education, Postgraduate Training, and Certifications

Dr. Patel received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Drexel University College of Arts & Sciences in 2009 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in 2013

His postgraduate training included an Internship and Residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Following residency, Dr Patel pursued further subspecialty training in Cardiovascular Disease and Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology Fellowships at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas

Through his training, he is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology, Echocardiography, Cardiac Computed Tomography (CT), and Nuclear Cardiology

Dr. Patel’s Bespoke Career

At his primary practice in York Hospital, Dr. Patel offers advanced heart failure care to critically ill patients who require sophisticated life support therapies, such as ECMO, Impella, LVAD, or eventual heart transplantation. In part due to his expertise, the heart failure team has expanded the use of these technologies to deliver nuanced and personalized treatments aimed at enhancing patients' quality of life while reducing hospital admissions and healthcare costs nationwide. Dr. Patel's expertise has enabled the team to retain patients within their local community, ensuring they remain close to family and friends, thereby eliminating the need for long-distance travel to access similar treatments

Dr Patel's accomplishments in establishing a comprehensive congestive heart failure care center in central Pennsylvania are noteworthy. His initiatives aim to improve patient outcomes regardless of their condition, from critically ill ICU patients needing complex mechanical circulatory pumps such as Impella and ECMO, to those who have recovered and been discharged. He is also developing a specialized cardiogenic shock survivors’ clinic that addresses the physical and emotional challenges following severe cardiac events Moreover, he emphasizes preventive care to keep patients healthy and out of the hospital through remote monitoring technologies like CardioMEMS. Additionally, for patients who unfortunately succumb to heart disease, Dr Patel has instituted protocols for performing virtual/molecular autopsies on sudden death victims This practice educates surviving family members about their genetic risk of sudden death.

Though his primary practice is at York Hospital, Dr. Patel maintains an active involvement in the nationwide practice of medicine through his experience and expertise in telehealth Immediately after completing his training, Dr Patel worked primarily as an internist and hospitalist for several healthcare facilities. During this period, he recognized the value of telemedicine as a

supplementary tool for traditional healthcare delivery models Consequently, he has served as a telehealth consultant for leading telehealth platforms nationally. Although he began with general internal medicine, Dr Patel transitioned to providing cardiovascular services to underserved communities. He currently holds the position of National Medical Director of Cardiac Imaging for Access Telecare, a prominent multispecialty telehealth organization present in nearly one-fifth of hospitals nationwide In this role, Dr Patel has spearheaded initiatives aimed at enhancing access to cardiac diagnostic imaging techniques, such as echocardiography and cardiac CT, predominantly in rural areas, again enabling patients to stay within their local community and have expert care available to them

Research and Academic Contributions

Nishi Patel has made significant contributions to cardiovascular research, consistently presenting his findings at national and international conferences for over a decade His research experience began during his residency training in the laboratory of Dr Harpreet Singh, Ph D , where he investigated animal models of heart failure and cardiomyopathy and refined echocardiography protocols for mice This work resulted in several publications on the evaluation of the right heart and the impact of potassium and chloride channel mutations on heart disease

Currently, Dr. Patel's research covers various high-acuity topics such as percutaneous ventricular assist devices, advanced heart failure therapies, cardiac transplant outcomes, and the molecular mechanisms of cardioprotection His most recent article, titled “HeartMate 3

Explanation Using Felt Plug for Ventriculotomy Occlusion,” was published in the Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal Additionally, he has authored numerous abstracts and poster presentations for prestigious organizations, including the Heart Failure Society of America, American College of Cardiology, International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, American Heart Association, and National Kidney Foundation

Most recently, he received the Zoll Foundation Research Grant to pursue research in applying precision medicine and genomics to the study of sudden cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock He also serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Cardiology and Cardiac CT sections for StatPearls, one of the leading healthcare education and technology companies with over 10,000 publications

Furthermore, he is a reviewer for the American Journal of Cardiology, CardioRenal Medicine, Reviews in Cardiovascular Medicine, and the Handbook of Pharmacology.

Nishi Patel is also a dedicated educator who received the Drexel University College of Medicine Golden Apple Award, nominated by medical students he mentored during clinical rotations. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and frequently lectures to medical students, residents, fellows, and healthcare providers at York Hospital and other locations.
