Dear Reader
This marks the final issue of Analytical Reporter for the year. Once again, I think we can all agree that 2025 has been quite a year! Globally, the laboratory industry is experiencing dynamic shifts driven by technological advancements, evolving regulations, and increasing demand for precision and efficiency.
Laboratories are increasingly adopting automation, AI, and digital solutions to enhance accuracy, throughput, and data management. Robotics and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) streamline workflows, reduce human error, and improve overall productivity.
Regulatory standards are becoming more stringent worldwide, prompting laboratories to implement rigorous quality control measures and accreditation processes, such as ISO/IEC 17025. This ensures data integrity and compliance with international standards.
The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated innovation and demand in clinical diagnostics, infectious disease testing, and personalised medicine. This growth continues as labs expand capabilities in genomics, molecular diagnostics, and point-of-care testing.
Environmental concerns are prompting labs to adopt sustainable practices, including energy-efficient equipment, waste reduction, and eco-friendly reagents, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints. This makes me think about something we all see every day: litter.
Litter isn’t just an eyesore; it’s a costly burden on economies worldwide, draining public funds and hindering sustainable growth. Yet, within this challenge lies a golden opportunity: the burgeoning waste sector offers innovative business prospects that can turn waste into wealth. By embracing efficient waste management, companies can not only reduce environmental
impact but also bolster their ESG credentials, gaining a competitive edge in a socially conscious marketplace. The future of waste is ripe with potential - are your business strategies ready to capitalise on it? Petco’s are!
Small, daily actions can have a significant impact on South Africa’s waste management and littering challenges – not just during Clean-Up & Recycle Week, but beyond.
This is the message from Petco, South Africa’s longest-standing producer responsibility body, which works to keep valuable recyclable post-consumer packaging out of landfills and within the circular economy at its highest value.
The annual national campaign, spearheaded by Plastics SA and supported by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, took place from 15 to 20 September. It included National River Clean-Up Day on 17 September, National Recycling Day on 19 September, and culminated with both International Coastal Clean-Up Day and World Clean-Up Day on 20 September.
According to Petco, while these headline events provide visible opportunities for consumers to get involved, the real difference happens in households, schools, workplaces and communities throughout the year.
“Clean-Up & Recycle Week is a chance for all of us to turn good intentions into lifelong habits,” said Petco CEO Telly Chauke. “Recycling starts with the choices we make in shops, at home, at work and in our communities. If we regularly separate recyclables at source, we not only reduce what goes to landfill, but we also support the waste pickers and small collection businesses whose livelihoods depend on collecting and trading these materials.”
Separation at source, said Chauke, involves separating out one’s recyclables at the point or place at which they become waste, to prevent them from ending up in the general waste stream destined for landfill.

The synergy between landfills and laboratories lies in their complementary roles in environmental management, research, and sustainable development. Here’s how they intersect: Laboratories analyse samples from landfills - such as leachate, gases, and soil - to monitor environmental impacts. This helps assess contamination levels, detect harmful pollutants, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
Laboratories perform detailed waste characterisation to optimise landfill operations, improve waste sorting, and develop strategies for reducing hazardous components. This supports more efficient and environmentally friendly waste disposal practices.
Laboratories contribute to innovative solutions for waste treatment, bioremediation, and landfill gas utilisation. They develop new technologies to convert landfill gases into renewable energy or to treat leachate, minimising environmental footprint. Landfills are subject to strict environmental standards. Laboratories provide the analytical data necessary for regulatory reporting, ensuring landfills operate within legal limits and adopt best practices.
And finally, laboratories aid in researching alternative waste management methods, such as recycling, composting, and waste-to-energy processes, promoting sustainability and circular economy principles.
To our readers, thank you for your ongoing support, dedication, and remarkable contributions to the laboratory industry throughout the year. Your achievements continue to inspire progress and innovation in our field. We look forward to collaborating and sharing successes with you in the year ahead.
Wishing you a wonderful festive season and a prosperous New Year!
Until next time,
Sami

The engineer, inventor and entrepreneur was born on 20 April 1929, in Lörrach, Baden-Württemberg, and grew up in Zell im Wiesental. In 1949, he began his mechanical engineering studies at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). There, he met Ayhan Gökay, who would later become his wife. In 1960, he completed his doctorate on the topic of friction and wear in waterlubricated rotary compressors.
Dr Busch was not only a pioneer in the field of vacuum technology but also a deeply caring father, mentor, and role model. In 1963, together with his wife Ayhan Busch, he founded Busch Vacuum Solutions with just 5 000 Deutsche Mark and, over the decades, built it into a global enterprise with more than $2bn in revenue. Today, more than 8 000 people in 44 countries worldwide work for the Busch Group, which consists of the two well-known brands: Busch Vacuum Solutions and Pfeiffer Vacuum+Fab Solutions.
His life’s work continues to shape vacuum innovation across industries around the world. He combined visionary thinking with an engineer’s love of detail. His groundbreaking inventions, like the Huckepack and R5 vacuum pumps for food packaging, were not just technical achievements; they were expressions of his commitment to practical solutions and product excellence. The design of the R5 was revolutionary and became the most successful vacuum pump design in the world, with millions sold.
Yet beyond his business legacy, Dr Busch was devoted to his family. Dr Karl and Ayhan Busch always worked together as a team of equals: as husband and wife for 62 years, parents, and business leaders. He was a father who truly listened with patience, curiosity and trust, and involved his children early in the company, sought their advice, and built a business culture rooted in family teamwork and shared purpose.

Dr
His personal motto, drawn from the Alemannic dialect, was “Nit luck lo!” –“Never give up!” This was a principle that guided his life, whether he was hiking in the Black Forest up to his mid-nineties, running a half marathon at age 87, or starting negotiations for the first German joint venture in China in 1978.
He was an adventurer and explorer at heart. He loved the world and its people. Whether cycling from Maulburg to Istanbul, climbing Kilimanjaro, or racing in 80 days around the world in an old-time Mercedes in 2000 with his sons Kaya and Sami, he embraced life with energy and joy. Dr Karl Busch believed deeply in giving back, and he carried his values into everything he did, raising funds for humanitarian causes, supporting his community, and mentoring his children as the next generation to continue his life’s work in our company.
He participated in the most recent Managers’ Meeting in the Netherlands. The last business trip together took place less than a year ago, when the family visited the Bavaria region of Germany. Just two months ago, they celebrated his 96th birthday
together in Italy, surrounded by children and grandchildren. Only days ago, he shared that he felt at peace with his life, a reflection of his ever-positive spirit.
Dr Busch’s legacy will continue to live on, in the company he built, in the innovations he inspired, our company culture and values, and most of all, in the people whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his wife Ayhan, his children Ayla, Sami and Kaya, their spouses, six grandchildren, and a global family of colleagues and friends who will miss him dearly.

FRITSCH’s A-22 NeXT laser particle analysers stand out for their user-friendly, compact, and low-maintenance design. They deliver fast, precise results in the nano- and micro-scale - often in under a minute. A new dry dispersion unit expands the modular system.
The A-22 NeXT Nano measures particles from 0.01 to 3800μm with high accuracy even for the smallest particles, while the A-22 NeXT Micro covers 0.5 to 1500μm for general applications. Both models use a single laser; the Nano requires no extra light source for backscattering. High-resolution sensors capture scattered light signals from all detectors simultaneously, and the angled arrangement of the measuring cell to the laser beam means a significantly larger scattering angle range can be recorded than with comparable instruments. One image covers the full range, speeding up the process - including cleaning - to under a minute.
Using FRITSCH’s reverse Fourier design, which is now standard in the industry, the system requires no extra optics and includes few components and virtually no moving parts, making it compact, easy to clean and mostly maintenance-free. The included software comes with predefined SOPs for common tasks, which users can modify or replace. SOPs automate key settings, ensuring consistent, reproducible results.
New module dry dispersion
The A-22 NeXT was developed according to a modular concept. For example, customers can choose between a dry and a wet dispersion unit depending on the individual task. In the wet dispersion system, a powerful centrifugal pump with adjustable speed ensures stable measurement.
The pump also transports heavy particles and allows the sample material to be distributed quickly and uniformly throughout the entire circuit. A dry dispersion option has recently been added for materials that react in water or other liquids.
This can also be used for larger sample quantities in the range from approx. 1cm³ to greater than 300cm³. In dry measurement, the sample material is
transported from the vibratory feeder via the suction funnel of the dry measuring cell, where it falls directly into a Venturi nozzle operated with adjustable compressed air.
Agglomerates are broken down as they pass through the nozzle. The particle size distribution is then measured directly in the laser beam.

FRITSCH particle analyser A-22 NeXT is completely modular and configured according to the application and can be adapted flexibly at any time.

simultaneously. As soon as free capacity at any one of the four work stations is noticed, the next analysis is started.
Fully protected reagent exchange
The new titration platform comes with a patented Liquid Adapter making the exchange of reagents safer than ever. No bottles with potentially harmful liquids need to be opened: In order to exchange reagents, the Liquid Adapter is simply snapped onto its counterpart on top of the sealed bottle with the original reagent. Moreover, when the liquid adapter is snapped onto this bottle cap, OMNIS reads information about the content of the bottle from an RFID chip in the bottle cap and saves it in the method. This fully automated identification and check of the reagent closes the last gap in the traceability of the analysis.

The new Metrohm titration platform is intuitive to use as the entire hardware is graphically represented in the user interface. Custom systems can be configured by drag and drop of the icons on the desktop or on a touch screen interface. The graphical method editor is operated by drag and drop as well, enabling users to edit methods command by command.
Focus on the sample
The new titration platform form puts the sample in the focus.
Whatever methods are necessary to analyse a sample, OMNIS collects the results and connects them to the sample. This saves time and effort, as the results for the parameters of interest for each sample are shown in a single report.
Comprehensive wet chemical analysis on a shared platform
Metrohm is the only manufacturer providing instrumentation and software for all methods of ion analysis. With OMNIS, Metrohm has opened the door to comprehensive, multi-method ion analysis on a universal platform.
