On Friday, August 15, Village of Lindenhurst sanitation workers James, Mike, and Patrick made a special visit to two local kids, Ellie and Jayce, surprising them with their very own DPW t-shirts. The thoughtful gesture comes after weeks of friendly greetings and waves from the trio as they passed the children’s home on their sanitation route. The Village of Lindenhurst takes pride in its friendly and dedicated sanitation workers, who go above and beyond in not only their daily tasks, but to create connections with the community.

Residents of the United States and Canada celebrate Labor Day or Labour Day each September on the first Monday of the month to acknowledge the contributions of each nation’s workers. The holiday can be traced to the late nineteenth century, when labor activists campaigned for a federal holiday to recognize hardworking employees and their accomplishments.
Although the holiday originally was crafted by the labor movement, not much labor occurs on Labor Day each year. Rather, Labor Day is a time when most workers enjoy a well-deserved day off, and various recreational events take place. Individuals can explore these tips to enjoy a memorable, fun and safe Labor Day.

celebrations. Although guests may look forward to familiar fare, such as burgers and hot dogs, introducing some interesting menu items into the mix can elevate the event even further. Explore options with seafood and vegetables or even experiment with different flavor profiles. Replace chicken with shrimp on kabobs or swap beef for lamb in burgers for even more variety.
When grilling, always emphasize safety. Never leave the grill unattended, and ensure that the grill is located away from the main action and far enough from the house so that nothing will catch fire.
Factor in traffic
Traffic is a common complaint during the summer, but especially during holiday weekends. AAA booking data showed overall domestic travel over
Labor Day weekend 2024 was up 9 percent compared to the year prior. In many locations, Labor Day is the last hurrah before school begins, so roadways tend to be congested. The transportation data experts at INRIX recommend car travelers avoid the afternoon and early evening hours of Thursday and Friday, as those times tend to be the busiest. Leaving early on Thursday or Friday or departing on Saturday afternoon will help travelers avoid most traffic and begin their weekends less stressed. Plus, drivers are less likely to drive aggressively when they build in a time buffer.
Head to the water
Water sports, boating, swimming, and other water-based activities are entertaining ideas for Labor Day. Life jackets are essential on boats and other watercraft, and inexperienced swimmers

Nutritional Benefits Of Watermelon
Watermelon is widely considered a summertime treat that’s particularly refreshing on a hot day. A staple at backyard barbecues, watermelon makes a great appetizer, side dish and even dessert.
Watermelon also can make for a nutritious addition to a backyard barbecue menu. Those who want something nutritious to eat alongside less healthy fare like hamburgers and hot dogs can consider the many nutritional benefits of watermelon.
• Watermelon is low in calories. The Mayo Clinic notes that one cup of watermelon is 46 calories. That makes watermelon an ideal low-calorie dessert, particularly when compared to other treats,
including ice cream. The calorie count for a single cup of ice cream varies by flavor, but the United States Department of Agriculture notes one cup of vanilla ice cream contains 274 calories, while one cup of chocolate ice cream is 286 calories. Watermelon is a low-calorie dessert alternative to ice cream that can be especially appealing after eating popular backyard barbecue fare.
• Watermelon promotes hydration. The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health notes that drinking enough water helps to regulate body temperature, lubricate the joints, prevent infections, and promotes proper organ function.
Water also delivers nutrients to cells.
Come summertime, it’s easy to fall victim to dehydration, but consuming watermelon can help to prevent that. The Mayo Clinic notes watermelon is 92 percent water, which can help people remain hydrated on hot summer days spent outside.
• Watermelon is a good source of vitamins C and A. The National Institutes of Health notes that human beings are unable to synthesize vitamin C endogenously, which means they must get this crucial vitamin from the foods they eat. Watermelon contains 14 percent of the recommended daily value (DV) of vitamin C per
Main support for this project comes from a $16,050 grant from The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, which primarily supports the study of Long Island history and its role in the American experience. Robert D. L. Gardiner was the 16th Lord of the Manor of Gardiner’s Island until his death in 2004. The Foundation is inspired by Gardiner’s personal passion for New York history.
“We are very thankful to the Gardiner Foundation for partnering with our Museum to enable our education team to provide schools and libraries with the greatest teaching tool of all – a traveling life-size whale,” noted Nomi Dayan, Executive Director of the museum.
Additional funding for this project comes from an Innovation Grant awarded from the Long Island Library Resources Council, which supports unique and new projects in cultural institutions in the region.
USDA dietary guidelines, making it a worthy addition to anyone’s diet. Watermelon also contains 5 percent of the recommended DV of vitamin A, which the NIH notes is important for normal vision, immune system health, reproduction, and growth and development.
• Watermelon does
not contain any fat, cholesterol or sodium. It’s not only what’s in watermelon that makes it so healthy, but what’s not in it as well. Unlike other popular desserts, such as ice cream, watermelon contains no fat, cholesterol or sodium. Opting for watermelon over more traditional desserts can
help people lower their fat consumption, reduce their cholesterol and avoid overconsumption of sodium.
Watermelon makes for a refreshing treat on a hot summer day. But watermelon provides a host of additional nutritional benefits as well, making it an ideal food for your next backyard barbecue.

Nonprofit organizations raise funds in various ways. Some organizations partner with local businesses and receive a portion of the proceeds participating establishments earn on certain days, while other organizations may cold call prospective donors during times of the year when giving to charity tends to increase, such as the holiday season. Activity-driven fundraisers are another popular way for nonprofit organizations to raise funds, and these endeavors can be highly effective.
What are activity-driven
Activity-driven fundraisers focus on an engaging activity that encourages supporters to actively participate in an effort to raise funds. The Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the more notable activity-driven fundraisers in recent years. Participants in the challenge would pour a bucket of ice water over their heads or the head of another person, and then challenge or nominate another person to follow suit. Participants also would urge donations to support research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable motor neuron disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Additional examples of activity-driven fundraisers are runs and walks in which participants solicit donations from supporters that increase with each mile they walk or run. The American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Awareness 5K walk and fun run is one popular activity-driven fundraiser
that annually attracts sizable numbers of participants and donors. Are activity-driven fundraisers effective?
The sheer volume of activity-driven fundraisers makes it more difficult to gauge the success of these events. However, a recent study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that people are inclined to contribute more when the experience is painful and labor-intensive. That suggests that activitydriven fundraisers like charity runs can be highly effective and lucrative ways to raise money. Indeed, various estimates suggest the Ice Bucket Challenge raised more than $220 million worldwide.
Nonprofit organizations raise funds in myriad ways. Activity-driven fundraisers are among the more engaging, and often successful, ways to raise money for a good cause.

It seems like just yesterday people were heralding the arrival of summer. After many months of fickle weather, summer’s warm temperatures and ample sunshine can be that hug from Mother Nature people need. But soon summer will be coming to an end, making room for apples, corn and pumpkin spice. Even though summer will soon be singing its swan song, there is still plenty of time for families to enjoy the waning days of surf and sunshine. Here are some family-friendly options to consider.
Catch a concert
Summer is a time of year when many artists go on tour and sell out everything from arenas to ampitheaters to more intimate venues. Find a singer the entire family enjoys and grab some tickets.
Pick fruit
Families Can Make The Most Of Summer’s End
Peach season varies depending on where you live, but May through September is a prime time for pick-your-own farms to open their orchards to the peach-picking public. Turn those peaches into pies for Labor Day festivities.
Watch some fireworks
Those who didn’t have an opportunity to catch a fireworks display already this summer, or who enjoyed it so much that they want more, can find out when the next big display will take place. Some beachside towns and even amusement parks regularly host fireworks shows on the weekends.
Climb a lighthouse
National Lighthouse Day occurs on August 7.
Locate a lighthouse within driving distance and visit one of the beautiful and historic structures that commemorate maritime history. For example, Sandy
Hook Lighthouse in New Jersey, which was lit for the first time in 1764, is the oldest operating lighthouse in the United States.
Pick a day to re-do
Ask all members of the family what sticks out in their minds as the best summer day so far. It may have been paddleboarding in a lake or taking a scenic drive. Compile the answers and then pick one activity to enjoy all over again.
Head to a state fair
State fairs fill calendars this time of year. They’re perfect ways to enjoy carnival rides, fair foods, live entertainment, and even livestock.
Watch balloons rise
Check to see if there is a hot-air balloon festival taking place nearby. Watch these huge items become lighter than air and get lifted off the ground.
Enjoy an outdoor movie
Purchase or borrow a movie projector and set up a screen outdoors. That screen can be an actual outdoor screen or a white sheet stretched between two poles. Invite the neighborhood to come over, set up picnic blankets and enjoy a family flick.
Camp out
Pitch a tent at a campground or even in your own backyard and spend an evening sleeping under the stars.
Visit a garden or arboretum
Families can wind down from summer by engaging in various enjoyable activities before a new school year begins.
Plan a day trip to a botanical garden or arboretum to view the various trees, flowers and shrubs in bloom. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a day in nature.
(NAPSI)—As ecoconscious living continues to grow in popularity, families are embracing greener habits and making sustainable choices in all aspects of life. From minimizing waste and using renewable energy to creating healthy indoor environments, modern families are more committed than ever to ensuring their homes reflect their values of sustainability and wellness. One often-overlooked element in creating an ecofriendly and healthy home, however, is air duct cleaning, which plays a crucial role in both energy efficiency and indoor air quality (IAQ).
And, when it comes to seeing air duct cleaning is done right, the National Air
Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) is setting the highest standards in the industry.
Eco-conscious and healthconscious families are turning to green practices, from installing smart systems to using energy-efficient appliances. Yet, despite these efforts, the air inside your home can still be filled with dust, mold, and allergens if your HVAC system is not properly maintained. Regular air duct cleaning supports your sustainable goals by improving IAQ, reducing energy consumption, and extending the life of your HVAC system.
How Air Duct Cleaning Contributes to a Greener
Home
1. Improved Energy Efficiency: Dirty air ducts force HVAC systems to work harder to heat or cool your home, leading to higher energy usage. A well-maintained system, with clean ducts, operates more efficiently, reducing energy waste and lowering your carbon footprint. To keep a home operating at peak efficiency, schedule regular air duct cleanings.
2. Better Indoor Air Quality: Clean air is essential for health-conscious families. By reducing contaminants such as dust, mold spores, and bacteria, regular duct cleaning helps
create a healthier indoor environment. This is particularly important for families with members who suffer from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions.
3. Reduced Environmental Toxins: Green families strive to minimize their exposure to harmful chemicals. Air ducts can harbor pollutants that may circulate throughout your home, contributing to poor IAQ. Routine cleaning helps reduce the buildup of these contaminants, promoting a toxin-free home without resorting to harsh chemical solutions.
Why
Choose a NADCACertified Professional?
While air duct cleaning is essential for maintaining a healthy, sustainable home, it must be done properly. That’s where NADCA comes in. NADCA holds its members to the highest standards, with a strict Code of Ethics and best practices. NADCA-certified professionals undergo rigorous training to ensure they use the most effective, up-to-date techniques and equipment. This means that your home’s air ducts are not only clean but that the process is conducted ethically and with a commitment to quality.
Take Control of Your Home’s Air Quality
To schedule an inspection

ENERGY STAR
(NAPSI)—If your family is spending more time at home, ENERGY STAR can help you tackle increased utility costs. The typical household spends about $2,000 a year on energy bills. With ENERGY STAR, you can save 30% and reduce your carbon footprint. Learn more at www.energystar.gov/ saveforgood.

Although summer officially ends on Sunday, September 22, 2025, Labor Day typically marks the unofficial close of the summer entertaining and recreation season. Enjoy A Safe Labor Day
to leave fireworks displays to the professionals. Also, sparklers burn at extremely high temperatures (approximately 2,000 F) which is hot enough to melt some metals. They’re are not recommended for children to handle.
• Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol can be a recipe for injuries or fatalities. Remember, just because it may be legal in some areas to use recreational marijuana, doesn’t mean it is legal to drive under the influence of it. Individuals should leave the driving to a designated driver or a
taxi or rideshare service if they plan to imbibe or use marijuana.
• Water-related injuries and deaths are highest among young children. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says drownings continue to be the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1 to 4. Extreme caution should be used in and around pools and other bodies of water whenever children are present. When swimming publicly, swim only where lifeguards are on duty.
• Even though summer is winding down, the risk
for skin cancer remains elevated. Continue to apply sunscreen when heading outdoors for Labor Day fun.
• No one wants to leave a Labor Day barbecue with food poisoning. All party hosts should remember to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold while entertaining and to remember to cook foods to the correct internal temperature. Even if a grilled steak looks charred on the outside, that does not necessarily mean it is well-done in the middle. Verify temperatures with a meat thermometer.
