Hazards You Can't See: Why we need IAQ performance standards

Traditional WHS laws focus on physical hazards, but the air we share can be just as dangerous. COVID-19, flu, and other airborne viruses pose serious risks, especially for workers with health conditions. Yet workplace health and safety regulations still lack clear indoor air quality (IAQ) standards. This session explores why it’s time to treat IAQ like any other safety risk, with defined performance standards, better ventilation, and real-time monitoring to protect worker health, reduce sick leave, and build more inclusive, resilient workplaces for everyone.

Please visit the website for information.

HOP into Contractor Safety

Discover how Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) principles can transform contractor safety management. This session unpacks the 5 HOP principles, the 4Ds, and the four pillars of contractor safety - and shows how to integrate them to build systems that foster learning, resilience, and collaboration. Walk away with tangible, real-world examples you can apply to strengthen safety outcomes in your own contractor workforce.

We’ll clarify key misconceptions, break down the differences in testing methods, and the importance of certification.

Safe at work. There for them.

You’re important at work, but at home you’re irreplaceable. When a life is lost or forever changes due to a workplace incident, it affects not only the worker but also families, friends, workmates and communities.

SafeWork NSW, the health and safety regulator for NSW workplaces, entered a new chapter on 1 July this year by becoming an independent regulator.

This change enhances SafeWork NSW’s independence, accountability, and focus on its core mission, which is securing safe and healthy workplaces across the state.

During Safe Work Month this October, SafeWork NSW will be focusing on reducing incidents and harms in line with our regulatory priorties:

‣ Falls from heights

‣ Harms to workers in the health care and social assistance sector

‣ Managing psychosocial risks at work – including sexual harassment

‣ Exposure to hazardous substances including asbestos, crystalline silica and welding fumes

‣ Injury from mobile plant, vehicles or fixed machinery.

Investing in Safety: Protecting People, Strengthening Workplaces

Creating a safe workplace is more than meeting compliance, it’s a strategic investment in your people and your organisation’s future.

At EML Group (EML), we’ve led personal injury claims management for over 110 years, partnering with Australian businesses and government agencies to deliver innovative safety programs, tools and services. Our commitment is backed by $142 million invested by Employers Mutual Limited to develop market-leading resources that improve outcomes for employers, injured workers and communities.

Workplace fatalities and serious injuries have farreaching impacts, affecting not just individuals, but their families, colleagues and communities. Industrial manslaughter laws now hold both corporations and individuals accountable for negligence resulting in death, reinforcing the need for proactive safety measures.

Psychological injuries are also rising, with recent WHS regulation changes placing greater emphasis on managing mental health risks. Many businesses struggle to keep pace with evolving safety standards, highlighting the urgent need for robust risk management systems.

Building Safer Workplaces

EML is proud to sponsor The Pitch Off at this year’s event, live on Day 1 at the Spotlight Stage, where three finalists will pitch transformative ideas in workplace safety and injury management for a chance to win $50,000 in funding.

How to implement the best workplace wellbeing solution in the era of AI

As technology rapidly advances and human adoption has to keep up, we run the significant risk of dehumanising and disconnecting our workforce. This risk is associated with a rising mental health burden and increasing social anxiety resulting in more volatile work environments. It is essential to understand how to connect with the wellbeing needs of employees and address them effectively in order to protect, attract and retain talent.

Software you can trust

Software that turns barriers into engagement; with instant return on investment. It is a simple approach, but encouraging employees in the field to complete business compliance activities faster and more easily, whilst providing better outcomes, is the key to active workforce engagement and efficiency particularly in construction and related all industries.

Employees need an integrated approach of user-friendly tools to assist with all aspects of risk management, safety, quality, environment, training, inductions, contractor management, assets and plant management. This in turn provides businesses with widespread efficiencies not otherwise possible with stand-alone systems.

Skytrust’s Intelligence System allows exactly this.

Let’s see how it affects the entire workforce and the effectiveness of operations; starting on site. Traditionally these employees are the individuals who conduct the inspections, hazard reports, SWMS etc. They understand the importance yet don’t always get to appreciate the benefits delivered by software systems.

Here at Skytrust we wanted to develop a solution that could change this, by firstly making entry processes faster and more thorough than paper. By empowering these employees with access to relevant information at their fingertips; scanning a QR code on a piece of plant; completing inspections on a mobile device; having access to service records and operation manuals; they instantly gain a more efficient and effective way of carrying out their role.

From this point companies are able to continue with the simple monthly subscription, with no lock in contracts.

With the workers on site engaged, and having relevant information accessible management experience even greater oversight and productivity.

Suddenly, they have access to instant information, live data e.g. notifications and escalations when something doesn’t occur or get completed. This process enables them to more effectively manage employees, events, improvements, audits and training information on dashboards. It also means reports are instantly drillable, providing instant performance indicators of how operations are trending.

This information supports management expertise with a holistic integrated approach to the organisation’s compliance management across all aspects of their business. The vast array of workflow benefits driven from functions such as training and inductions, to performance appraisals, to QR coded employee IDs, all seamlessly flow and cascade. Designed to directly align with ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001. This approach has proven successful in any industry application.

The Skytrust application has been built to break all traditional barriers of software implementation with no large upfront costs. Our backing that this application will revolutionise your business rapidly is so strong, we offer companies a no obligation 3-month trial via skytrust.com.au, allowing customers to truly experience instant return on investment before making a decision.

At the end of the line, the individuals ultimately responsible for complete oversight to their legislative obligations are Executives and Directors. To assist this obligation, an instant due diligence benefit, regarding how their business is complying, is provided via the dashboard. Whilst this certainly is attractive for their peace of mind, it is the no obligation trial approach, with no expenditure barriers, that provide true appeal to savvy Executives and Directors, who have everything to gain and nothing to lose through trialling this system.

Skytrust has focused its software application to appeal to the needs and KPIs of entire site workforce; and aim for a no barriers implementation of their Business Risk Management Software: Skytrust.

Software that turns barriers into engagement; with instant return on investment.

Fall Protection in 2025: A shift in standards, frameworks and mindset

The 2025 revisions to AS/NZS 1891.4 and AS 5532 represent the most significant evolution in fall protection in over a decade. These standards do more than refine technical details; they help create a unified framework that simplifies expectations, reduces ambiguity, and reshapes how safety at height is approached across industry. They will affect how systems are designed, tested, and what is required to keep them compliant over their working life.

For many years, workplaces operated in a space where standards overlapped, contradicted each other, or left too much room for interpretation. This often led to inconsistent practices and uncertainty in both system design and equipment procurement. The new editions resolve this by aligning AS/NZS 1891.4, which covers selection, use, and maintenance, with AS 5532, which governs anchor manufacturing and testing. Together, they provide clarity and consistency, a single, reliable source of truth.

The significance lies not just in alignment but in philosophy. The revised hierarchy of fall protection makes a bold statement: systems that rely less on worker judgment and more on engineered solutions must take precedence. This shift acknowledges that people make mistakes, and that safer outcomes come from systems designed to anticipate and withstand variability. By embedding redundancy, competence, and reliability into the framework itself, the standards elevate fall protection from being compliance-driven to being resilience-driven.

For workplaces, the implications are wide-reaching. Employers will need to review current fall protection layouts, update training against clearer competency benchmarks, and adapt procurement practices to ensure equipment is tested and marked to the new requirements. Training providers gain a sharper blueprint for what competence means in practice. Manufacturers face higher expectations of testing and transparency, while regulators benefit from a stronger platform for oversight.

Perhaps the greatest impact, however, is cultural. These changes shift safety at height from being an exercise in ticking regulatory boxes to a mindset of building systems that are predictable, forgiving of human error, and designed with worker safety at the centre.

The challenge now is for organisations to act early, by reviewing systems, refreshing training, and aligning procurement with the new framework. In doing so, they won’t just achieve compliance; they’ll contribute to a safer industry, setting a higher benchmark for protecting those who work at height every day.

Meet the two key principles that hold the key to psychosocial health at work

Workplaces talk a lot about safety, but far less about the invisible pressures that shape how people feel and perform every day. Stress, uncertainty, and the fear of getting it wrong can quietly undermine both wellbeing and productivity. For Katharine Davies, Associate Director of Safety, Health & Environment at AstraZeneca, tackling psychosocial health starts with two deceptively simple principles that help leaders see work as it really is.

“At AstraZeneca, we’re focussed on human performance and apply Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) principles,” Davies explains. “It’s not about blaming people for errors. It’s about recognising that systems are often set up in ways that can lead people to fail — and reshaping those systems so people can succeed.”

Davies argues that middle managers are the critical link in making psychosocial health real. “Senior leaders can commit, and frontline workers can care deeply, but middle managers are the ones making daily decisions. They’re the ones who set the tone for whether a worker has a good day or a bad one. The more we invest in them, the stronger the outcomes.”

Two principles stand out as particularly powerful for leaders and managers looking to strengthen psychosocial health in their workplaces:

Gemba – Going to ‘the real place’

Borrowed from Japanese management practice, Gemba emphasises being present where work actually happens. Rather than relying on reports or dashboards, managers spend time on the shop floor, observing how tasks are performed, and asking people what’s really working or not. “When leaders practise Gemba, it’s not about talking KPIs or numbers,” Davies says. “It’s about asking humancentred questions: What challenges are you facing? How can we support you?”

Blue line vs black line – Understanding work as done vs work as imagined

The “black line” represents the prescribed process — how work is expected to be done. The “blue line” reflects reality — how workers actually carry out tasks. The gap between the two is often where risk, frustration, and innovation live. Instead of jumping to non-compliance, Davies urges leaders to ask why the gap exists. “Is there a barrier we’ve overlooked? Have workers found a safer or more efficient way? That’s where the opportunity lies — adapting the system to fit the worker, not forcing the worker to fit the system.”

The message is simple but profound: psychosocial health isn’t about posters, campaigns, or ticking boxes. It’s about creating environments where people feel safe to be human, to share challenges without fear, and to do their best work supported by managers who listen and act.

Or as Davies puts it: “It’s about building workplaces where authenticity, creativity and even failure are part of the system. That’s where trust grows, and that’s where performance follows.”

Leading the Way in Mining Safety: Evolution’s Fiona Murfitt on embedding accountability and care

As Vice President – Sustainability at Evolution Mining, Fiona Murfitt leads risk, health, safety, training, and social performance for the company’s operations in Australia and Canada.

“I feel privileged to manage an expansive role that allows me to spend time across our sites and meet stakeholders, supporting a positive legacy for our communities,” Fiona says.

Her passion for health and safety is deeply personal. “My ambition is to help people go home better from work than how they arrived and is a deeply personal one, having experienced a workplace fatality in the family,” she shares.

A self-described “techie by trade,” Fiona’s career has centred on leading change and fostering trusted relationships to connect strategy with practical action, especially across high-risk sectors. “I am passionate about sustainability, inclusive of health and safety, underpinned by a genuine care for people,” she adds.

Facing

2025’s safety challenges

Fiona notes that mining faces complex challenges, including ethical dilemmas from AI, workforce engagement and training, and the burden of compliance with federal and state jurisdictions. Core to Evolution’s response is a belief that ‘people are at the heart of our business.’ The company aims to make Evolution “the highlight of people’s careers,” supporting employee development and aligning business priorities with personal values.

Embedded programs such as Evolution’s Felt Leadership encourages leaders to connect with teams in the field, ensuring visibility and validation of safety controls. “It’s a good way to show that you care,” says Fiona, explaining how these efforts integrate safety into daily routines.

Complementing this, Evolution fosters learning through storytelling – every Thursday, leaders share stories and lessons from incidents or areas of excellence, inviting open discussion. Fiona describes this as “a valuable way to prevent recurrence of incidents, share lessons and help people connect more broadly across the business.”

Innovation and best practice

While innovation is constantly evolving, Fiona stresses the importance of “doing the fundamentals well” as the foundation for best practice and safe operations. Technologies like drones are “game changers for reviewing ground topography, stability, and water sampling,” and the use of AI in such things like 3D modelling helps with safer mine design. Remote bogging also enhances safety by removing people from hazardous areas.

ambition is to help people go home better from work than how they arrived and is a deeply personal one, having experienced a workplace fatality in the family.

Looking ahead: Learning and accountability

At the upcoming Workplace Health & Safety Sydney event, Fiona looks forward to “catching up with some amazing people and reflecting on how far we’ve come, but also recognising the need to improve.” Her panel will discuss an integrated approach to safety, emphasising that “risk needs to be owned closest to the source – understood by those doing the work” and that empowering people at every level is crucial. “The importance of creating a culture where people can speak up” will be a core topic.

Fiona Murfitt’s approach is driven by both professional and operational expertise and personal conviction, ensuring sustainability is integrated into every aspect of Evolution Mining’s operations.

HOP in Action: bp’s Adrian Connolly on the future of contractor safety

With almost 30 years shaping safety practices across bp’s operations in Australia and New Zealand, Adrian Connolly has seen firsthand how the energy sector’s challenges continue to evolve. Today, his focus at bp is on control of work and contractor management systems, driven by the principles of HOP: learning from everyday work, building psychological safety, and fostering trust through genuine care.

The Biggest Challenges in Contractor Management

Looking to 2025, Adrian sees complexity and diversity in contractor workforces as one of the toughest challenges. With bp and the broader energy sector transitioning into new energy projects and digital operations, ensuring consistent safety standards while respecting different work contexts is vital.

Another pressing issue is psychological safety in highrisk environments. Adrian highlights the need to engage frontline workers directly - listening to their challenges, learning from their experiences, and addressing the risks of “normalisation” that can arise in repetitive work across bp’s vast retail network.

To close this gap between “work as imagined” and “work as done,” bp is investing in field conversations, data insights, and programs grounded in HOP and humble enquiry - ensuring that systems are both practical and responsive to reality on the ground.

How HOP Principles Make a Difference

For Adrian, HOP is more than a theory - it’s a practical way of working with contractors as partners, not just service providers.

“By recognising that error is normal and that context drives behaviour, we’re fostering environments where contractors feel empowered to speak up and share concerns,” he explains.

This approach not only strengthens trust but also ensures that contractor safety is built on collaboration and mutual benefit, rather than compliance alone.

The Future of HOP and Contractor Safety

Looking ahead, Adrian believes HOP principles will become deeply integrated into the entire contractor management lifecycle - from procurement to on-site interactions.

Digital tools and AI offer new opportunities to analyse frontline insights and enhance visibility and responsiveness. But, Adrian cautions, the industry must ensure that technology augments human connection rather than replaces it.

“Ultimately, the future lies in building trust-based partnerships where safety is a shared value, not just a requirement enforced on contractors,” he says. “By embracing HOP and the four pillars of contractor safety, we can create environments where contractors thrive — and safety becomes a natural outcome of good work.”

By recognising that error is normal and that context drives behaviour, we’re fostering environments where contractors feel empowered to speak up and share concerns.

What to Expect at the Show

Adrian will share real-world examples of how HOP can elevate contractor safety and provide attendees with actionable strategies they can take back to their own organisations.

“I hope people walk away with a renewed appreciation for listening to their contractors, designing systems that support real work, and creating cultures where people feel safe to speak up,” he says. “You don’t need to wait for a big strategic agenda to start change - the ripple effect begins with your own actions.”

Retention and Employee Wellbeing

The modern workplace has always demanded a high level of performance. Long hours, constant deadlines, and high expectations are often seen as part of the job. But in recent years, many organisations have faced a quieter challenge: retaining top talent.

Today’s professionals are rethinking what they expect from their careers. While remuneration and reputation still matter, they are no longer enough to keep people engaged, loyal, or performing at their best. The new benchmark? A workplace that genuinely supports wellbeing.

Wellbeing Isn’t a Perk – It’s a Priority

In high-pressure environments, burnout, anxiety, and chronic stress are increasingly common – and often go unnoticed until they impact performance or lead to resignations. Many health concerns, both direct and indirect, affect daily performance, with life becoming increasingly complex.

Younger employees, in particular, are placing greater value on mental health, flexibility, and purpose. But these needs are not limited to early-career professionals. Senior leaders are also seeking sustainable ways of working that allow them to perform effectively without compromising their own wellbeing, while reducing risks for those they support.

Retention today requires more than recognition or pay increases. It requires a culture where wellbeing is visible, supported, and taken seriously.

The Hidden Costs of Inaction

Organisations that fail to adapt are seeing the consequences: high turnover, disengagement, reduced productivity, and increased risks to team morale and psychological safety.

It’s not just the direct costs of recruitment and training –it’s the loss of institutional knowledge, client relationships, and leadership potential that walks out the door when employees feel unsupported.

In contrast, organisations that build a reputation for valuing employee wellbeing often attract stronger talent, improve team cohesion, and cultivate long-term loyalty.

Leadership Sets the Tone

Creating a culture of wellbeing starts at the top. When leaders model sustainable work habits, encourage open conversations about mental health, and support their teams with meaningful and relevant health and wellbeing resources, retention becomes a natural outcome.

Investing in Sustainable Success

Supporting employee wellbeing is not about lowering standards – it’s about enabling people to meet them consistently. Healthy, engaged employees don’t just stay longer; they perform better, collaborate more effectively, and lead with greater impact.

Machinery under the microscope: The overlooked risk in heavy vehicle chain of responsibility

When most people think of the Chain of Responsibility (CoR), they picture drivers and their loads. But under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), responsibility stretches far beyond the cab. Everyone in the supply chain, from schedulers and consignors to site managers and operators, carries a duty to ensure heavy vehicle safety.

That responsibility doesn’t stop at how a vehicle is loaded or driven. It extends to the machinery and equipment operating in and around heavy vehicles every day. Cranes, loaders, excavators, forklifts and other plant all interact with heavy vehicles during loading, unloading and site movements creating a complex web of risks that fall directly under the CoR.

The missing link: machinery risk

While much focus is placed on fatigue management, mass limits and load restraint, machinery condition and suitability are too often overlooked. Poorly maintained, unsafe or non-compliant machinery can directly compromise heavy vehicle safety. A defective loader dropping material into a truck or an excavator with ineffective brakes on a haul road poses just as much risk to drivers and the public as overloading or poor scheduling.

This is where machinery risk assessments become critical. Regular, systematic assessments identify hazards, flag compliance gaps and provide the documented evidence duty holders need to demonstrate they are meeting their obligations under the NHVR.

Why assessments matter

‣ Demonstrating compliance – providing proof that plant and machinery have been assessed, maintained and deemed fit for purpose

‣ Preventing incidents – catching mechanical defects and operational risks before they become safety failures

‣ Protecting all parties in the chain – from site managers to contractors, everyone can be held accountable under CoR if unsafe machinery is involved in an incident

A smarter way forward

Meeting CoR obligations requires a proactive, not reactive approach. By embedding machinery risk assessments into everyday operations, businesses not only protect their workforce and the community but also shield themselves from regulatory, financial and reputational damage.

Because at the end of the day, CoR isn’t just about trucks on the road. It’s about the entire ecosystem of people, places and machines that make those journeys possible.

Improvement Specialists: Who they are and why your business needs one

Organisations everywhere are facing a giant challenge. The world of work is evolving faster than ever, but so many companies are stuck in the mindset of “this is how we’ve always done it.”

Businesses are weighed down by rigid processes, compliance-driven routines, and a status quo begging for change.

According to SafetyCulture’s Feedback from the Field report, inefficient processes at work cost Australian workers an estimated 2.70 hours per week in lost time. In addition, 89% of Australian workers feel that health, safety, or quality leaders in their organisation could provide more value to them.

Among all of this, we’ve noticed a new type of leader emerging - the Improvement Specialist. They’re not keyboard warriors, managers or consultants. Improvement Specialists are the passionate changemakers within teams. They have natural skills that should be celebrated, and given platforms to flex their potential, which can drive significant benefits for their organisation.

What is an Improvement Specialist?

An Improvement Specialist is a proactive team member who drives efficiency, solves problems, and inspires others to achieve sustainable progress.

In many businesses, Improvement Specialists are the spark that ignites progress. Here’s what sets them apart:

‣ Deep operational insight: Improvement Specialists understand their organisation inside and out, from systems and tools to team dynamics and customer needs.

‣ Proactive problem-solvers: Improvement Specialists are relentless in turning challenges into actionable solutions. They take ownership, rally teams, and embed sustainable change.

‣ Natural leaders: Improvement Specialists don’t wait for a promotion to make a difference. They lead by example, motivate their co-workers to improve, and take ownership and action. They bring out the best in teams, turning ideas into group achievements.

‣ Technology-first: Improvement Specialists use technology to establish a flow of information that connects teams. They stay current on the latest tools and platforms and how they can be used to improve ways of working consistently.

These are the skills that build a blueprint for how to transform improvements from an idea into a repeatable, scalable improvement process.

Why every organisation needs Improvement Specialists

Traditional, top-down approaches to change are no longer effective. Thriving organisations today foster a culture where improvement is encouraged at every level.

Take Tremco Roofing as an example. Before Ro Lewis stepped in, safety checks were rigid and supervisorled. According to Joseph Lee, Tremco’s US Gulf States Manager, “In the past, we were pencil-whipping the guys, looking for mistakes. One of the biggest things I learned was how aware our guys were, but how afraid they were to say anything.”

Ro introduced a more inclusive approach, implementing a tool that encouraged frontline workers to participate in daily task analyses (DTAs), shifting them from passive rule-followers to active contributors.

The impact was immediate. Within days, management discovered that workers were manually carrying 11.5 kg buckets up ladders—an unsafe and inefficient practice. This led Vice President Mardee Billingsly to issue a company-wide directive apologising for the oversight and committing to new equipment and training. One worker even stated, “This is the first company I worked for where I know they’ve got my back. I know they listened to what we have to say.”

This transformation sparked a cycle of continuous improvement, where visibility led to action, action built trust, and compliance became more than a box-ticking exercise—it became a core part of company culture.

Cultivating Improvement Specialists in your organisation

Every organisation has potential Improvement Specialists. The key is to recognise and nurture them. Here’s how:

‣ Identify the changemakers: Look for employees who aren’t satisfied with “good enough” and are always finding ways to make things better.

‣ Offer training and certification: SafetyCulture’s free SafetyCulture Certified course helps employees build the skills they need to lead improvement initiatives.

‣ Empower through autonomy: Allow these individuals the space to experiment and take charge.

The future of continuous improvement

Continuous improvement offers a powerful framework for optimising processes, but many initiatives can fail when it comes to execution.

Organisations often face three key challenges: lack of stakeholder support, resistance to a culture of improvement, and tools or systems that don’t evolve alongside changing needs. Even when initiatives gain momentum, they can stall due to change fatigue, low employee engagement, or a status quo mindset. That’s why Improvement Specialists will drive the future of work. Improvement Specialists are the champions who turn daily work into extraordinary results. And their true superpower? Rallying teams around sustained progress, embedding change into the fabric of company culture, and ensuring progress isn’t just a oneoff effort but a continuous journey.

Imagine a workplace where every employee wakes up and asks, “What’s the most important thing I could improve today?” The answer to that question could change everything.

Why organisations need an integrated approach to safety, health and wellbeing

Workplaces face an unprecedented mix of pressures: complex regulations, skills shortages, shifting workforce expectations, and a rising focus on psychosocial safety.

Traditional approaches that treat safety as a compliance exercise - or apply one-off training solutions - are tactics that no longer meet the growing scale or complexity of these challenges in our modern workplaces.

What’s required is an integrated risk approach that addresses people, process, and performance together. At HSE Global, this is how we “make a difference.”

Moving Beyond Siloed Solutions

Too often, organisations address their safety, wellbeing, and leadership challenges tactically, and in isolation: a technical consultant for one issue, a recruitment organisation for another, a training provider for the next. This fragmented approach can create activity but not support momentum.

By contrast, an ecosystem approach ensures alignment:

‣ Measurement highlights where intervention is needed.

‣ Consulting identifies the opportunities to create strategies for change.

‣ Recruitment secures the right people to lead and sustain progress.

‣ Learning builds the capability of your people, equipping them with the skills and confidence to create lasting change.

The result is more than just improved compliance, or fewer incidents, it’s a fundamental shift in how organisations function, how leaders lead, and how people experience safer connections with their workplace.

The future of safety and wellbeing is part of a wider risk management approach and isn’t about one program or one metric. It’s about creating organisation ecosystems that bring together data, strategy, people, and capability in a way that delivers measurable and lasting impact.

The Power of an Ecosystem Approach

Rather than viewing consulting, recruitment, measurement, and learning as separate functions, we see them as interdependent levers of change. Organisations thrive when these elements reinforce each other—when delivering upon strategy is informed by data, guided by the right people in the right roles, and underpinned by a culture built through effective leadership and adaptive learning strategies.

In practice, our ecosystem follows a simple, logical flow: firstly, you gather insights that are supported by data (Measure). Then, you design strategy (Think). Next, you put the right people in place (Resource). Finally, you build on capability (Learn).

We capture this thinking through four interconnected pillars:

‣ Measure different – leveraging data and benchmarking to provide evidence-based insights that inform decisions.

‣ Think different – helping organisations challenge assumptions and design specific strategies that build resilience, culture, and wellbeing.

‣ Resource different – ensuring the right people are in the right roles, with the capability and support to deliver long-term performance.

‣ Learn different – building capability through pathways that move people from awareness to mastery, embedding change into everyday practice.

What This Looks Like in Practice

If we were to use a company in the transport sector with rising incident rates and high turnover among safety professionals as an example, Our approach would:

‣ Measure different – Support the evidence obtained through interviews and observations by using the Global Safety Index to obtain data insights on its safety leadership, culture, and wellbeing which may identify gaps in frontline engagement and psychosocial risk.

Why It Matters

‣ Think different – Consultants would design a new critical risk management and culture transformation strategy. This strategic approach would be inclusive of mental health and wellbeing frameworks.

‣ Resource different – Through our teams at edenfx | HSE Global People, the organization is able to fill both permanent and temporary HSE roles where the candidates are assessed in line with the organization’s specific needs and in line with strategy requirements.

‣ Learn different – The HSE Global Academy (including our Registered Training Organisation (RTO) within Forkpro) delivers blended pathways to not only help individuals be industry ready, job ready, or task ready, but to also deliver both bespoke leadership development solutions, as well as accredited modules such as Mental Health First Aid certification. A community of practice supports the ongoing capability building.

Within 18 months, the company would have confidence that incident rates would decline, leadership capability and confidence improves, and employee engagement scores rise. Most importantly, the company sustains the change because the ecosystem perpetuates the actions to measure, think, resource and learn in an integrated way.

The future of safety and wellbeing is part of a wider risk management approach and isn’t about one program or one metric. It’s about creating organisation ecosystems that bring together data, strategy, people, and capability in a way that delivers measurable and lasting impact.

By working in this way, organisations move beyond compliance to resilience, beyond training to capability, and beyond recruitment to sustaining a performance culture.

And in doing so, they don’t just meet regulatory requirements or business targets, they make a difference in the lives of their people. Every day.

Drive Safety Performance Beyond Compliance.

Most organisations track incidents. Few measure the leadership and culture behaviours that cause them.

Traditional lag measures like LTIFR and TRIFR only tell you when something has already gone wrong.

Embracing Sustainability in PPE Management: The benefits of The PPE Group's 360processed Program

In an era where workplace health and safety (WHS) professionals are increasingly tasked with balancing employee protection and environmental responsibility, the disposal of personal protective equipment (PPE) poses a significant challenge.

Globally, and particularly in Australia, the consumption of PPE—from gloves and helmets to workwear—contributes to mounting waste issues, including excessive water usage in production and landfill pollution. The PPE Group's 360processed program emerges as a game-changer, offering a comprehensive value-add service that processes end-oflife PPE through recycling and upcycling, in partnership with Upparel. This initiative not only diverts waste from landfills but also aligns with corporate sustainability goals, making it an essential tool for WHS leaders committed to reducing their organisation's ecological footprint.

One of the program's standout benefits is its environmental impact. By collecting and processing PPE waste streams in one simple box - covering categories like hand protection, eye protection, footwear, and flame-retardant (FR) workwear - 360processed ensures materials are recycled into raw forms or upcycled into innovative products such as Uptex for construction applications. All processing occurs within Australia, avoiding international shipping that would inflate carbon emissions. WHS professionals can thus demonstrate tangible reductions in their site's carbon footprint, with quarterly reports providing transparent data on savings. This traceability empowers organisations to meet ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting requirements, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement in sustainability practices.

to 20kg of textiles each, including return delivery - to skip bins ideal for large-scale construction or infrastructure projects. This flexibility accommodates sites of all sizes, ensuring minimal disruption to daily operations. Moreover, the program extends beyond The PPE Group's brands, allowing inclusion of other products, which broadens its appeal for multi-vendor environments.

Ease of implementation is another key advantage, tailored to diverse workplace needs. Registration is straightforward via QR code, email, or local business development manager contact, with forecasts based on PPE consumption to determine suitable collection methods. Options range from the Simple BoxUP systemaffordable upfront costs for 12 branded boxes holding up

The PPE Group's 360processed program emerges as a game-changer, offering a comprehensive value-add service that processes end-of-life PPE through recycling and upcycling, in partnership with Upparel.

Security and compliance further enhance its value. Sensitive items, such as branded uniforms, are securely destroyed in a 24/7 live-streamed facility, addressing data protection concerns in high-risk industries like mining and manufacturing. Pricing transparency, with per-kilo rates for bulk returns, positions 360processed as a cost-effective value-add rather than an expense, closing the loop on PPE lifecycles without compromising safety standards.

By reducing waste and providing verifiable outcomes, 360processed not only safeguards the planet but also elevates organisational reputation.

For WHS professionals striving to integrate sustainability into core practices, 360processed offers a practical, impactful solution. The Power of Early Intervention: Using onsite physiotherapy to prevent serious injuries

Workplace musculoskeletal injuries are one of the most significant drivers of lost time, compensation costs, and productivity loss in Australian industries. Despite decades of safety improvements, back strains, shoulder injuries, and repetitive strain issues remain the “silent epidemic” of our workforce.

At Workstrong Health Solutions, we believe the future of workplace safety lies not just in treating injuries but in preventing them before they escalate. That’s why we embed onsite physiotherapists directly into workplaces — providing immediate care, conducting proactive risk assessments, and coaching employees in real time. The result? Fewer claims, healthier workers, and stronger businesses.

Technology and Reporting: Turning Data into Prevention

Traditional workplace injury management often relies on lagging indicators — waiting for a claim to occur before acting. Our approach flips that model. Using real-time data collection and customised reporting systems, our onsite physiotherapists capture early signs of strain and discomfort directly from workers.

This information feeds into trend analysis dashboards, giving employers leading indicators that highlight risks before they become costly injuries. For example, repetitive lifting trends or early shoulder complaints in one department may signal the need for job task redesign, additional training, or equipment adjustments.

By combining clinician expertise with technology-driven insights, we empower safety managers with actionable intelligence — ensuring injury prevention becomes a measurable, data-led strategy rather than guesswork.

Tailoring Services to Client Requirements

No two businesses are the same, which is why off-theshelf health programs rarely deliver lasting results. At Workstrong, we design every service around the unique physical demands of our client’s workforce.

Our team conducts detailed job task analyses, matches employees to the right roles, and builds warm-up and training programs targeted to the exact forces, postures, and movements of each job. This tailored approach allows us to address risks at their source and create genuine cultural change around injury prevention.

We also combine early intervention data with rolespecific assessments, ensuring our programs evolve as workforce needs change. This flexibility is what sets us apart — clients don’t just receive a service, they gain a long-term partner in injury prevention.

The Benefits: From Health Outcomes to Financial Savings

The impact of early intervention and tailored injury prevention goes well beyond health outcomes. One of our national manufacturing clients, employing around 500 staff, achieved a $750,000 reduction in insurance premiums through reduced injury rates and improved workforce alignment.

For employers, the benefits are clear: lower claims costs, reduced absenteeism, stronger safety culture, and a healthier, more productive workforce.

Building safer workplaces through smarter drug & alcohol testing

One of the most critical, yet often overlooked, components of a safe workplace is a robust, fair, and effective drug and alcohol testing program.

At Alcolizer Technology, we’ve spent over 35 years at the forefront of alcohol and drug testing innovation. As the largest provider of breath testing devices to Australian Police and a trusted partner to thousands of workplaces across the country, we’ve seen firsthand how testing programs can transform safety outcomes when implemented with care, consistency, and clarity.

The Evolving Landscape of Workplace Risk

Workplace health and safety professionals are facing a rapidly changing risk environment. The rise of synthetic drugs, increased prescription and over-the-counter medication use, and evolving workplace norms around medicinal cannabis all pose new challenges. Add to that the growing complexity of legal frameworks and the need for privacy, fairness, and procedural transparency, and it’s clear that traditional approaches to testing are no longer enough.

Employers must now navigate a landscape where safety, legal compliance, employee wellbeing, and public accountability intersect. The tragic Hunter Valley bus crash in 2023, and the subsequent legal consequences for the transport operator, served as a stark reminder of what’s at stake when safety systems fail.

Technology That Builds Confidence

Modern drug and alcohol testing solutions must do more than detect - they must build trust. That’s why Alcolizer Technology has invested in developing technology that is not only accurate and fast, but also easy to use, legally defensible, and backed by expert support.

Our Centurion Quantum system, for example, is designed for high-volume, high-risk environments where speed and reliability are critical. It combines police-grade breath testing with secure data capture and reporting, helping organisations maintain compliance and respond quickly to incidents and potential risks. It’s already being deployed in transport hubs, mining sites, and logistics depots across Australia.

From Policy to Practice - The Role of Training

Introducing testing alone is not enough in today’s work health and safety requirements. Under the Model WHS Act, a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) must:

‣ Ensure the health and safety of workers by managing risks associated with drug and alcohol use.

‣ Consult with workers who may be directly affected by health and safety matters, including drug and alcohol testing policies.

‣ Provide clear communication about testing procedures, expectations, and consequences

We have expanded our training offering to include Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Reasonable Suspicion, and Cross-Reactivity courses - designed to equip supervisors

and safety officers with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions and provide adequate training and communication with their team.

Awareness training ensures everyone has a clear understanding of the testing process, their rights and responsibilities and to ensure testing is carried out consistently and respectfully. It also empowers teams to spot early warning signs and intervene before incidents occur.

Smarter Testing?

Alcolizer Technology supports organisations with customisable drug and alcohol testing solutions that are supported with:

‣ Digital Integration - connect testing with access control, HR, safety, and compliance systems.

‣ Analytics & Insights – live data at your fingertips with instant alerts and visibility across your organisation to identifying risk patterns and informing proactive safety strategies.

‣ Policy & Procedure - There’s growing awareness of the need for culturally sensitive and legally sound testing practices. This includes understanding cross-reactivity, managing prescription medication disclosures, and ensuring policies are applied equitably across diverse workforces. Our policy review service is redeemable with product purchases.

Workplace drug and alcohol testing is not just about detection - it’s about prevention, education, and accountability. It’s about creating environments where people feel safe, supported, and empowered to do their best work.

As we prepare to attend the Workplace Health & Safety Show in Sydney, we’re excited to connect with safety leaders, share insights, and showcase the innovations that are helping organisations reduce risk and build confidence.

If you’re attending the show, come and meet the Alcolizer Technology team. Let’s talk about how we can help you build a safer, smarter workplace - when safety is done right, everyone wins.

Building Healthier Workplaces Together: Why the healthy work community of practice matters

Workplace well-being is no longer a side initiative. It is a core responsibility for every organisation, with psychosocial risks now recognised as central to safety, performance, and culture. Yet many leaders find themselves navigating in isolation—WHS looking through a compliance lens, HR tackling culture and retention, and Well-being leaders focusing on resilience. What is often missing is the bridge that brings these disciplines together.

That is exactly what the Healthy Work Community of Practice (CoP) provides. It is a professional membership that connects practitioners across Australia and New Zealand, offering practical tools, expert insights, and the peer support needed to make meaningful progress on psychosocial risk and workplace mental health.

A Community Grounded in Evidence and Practice

The Healthy Work CoP is not another networking group. It is designed to help members move from good intentions to tangible outcomes. Every element of the membership has been shaped to give practitioners the clarity, collaboration, and evidence they need to address psychosocial risks effectively.

One of the strongest features is the real-world case studies. These provide detailed examples of how organisations have tackled psychosocial risks, what worked, and the lessons learned along the way. Instead of abstract ideas, members see exactly how strategies play out in practice and what they can adapt for their own context.

To complement this, the CoP keeps members up to date with legislation and regulator updates across Australia and New Zealand. With compliance obligations shifting and enforcement increasing, these concise updates ensure no one is left scrambling to interpret complex changes.

The membership also provides a Controls Library, organised by psychosocial hazard. This evolving resource is filled with evidence-informed strategies ready to be applied in risk assessments and action plans. It allows practitioners to move quickly from identifying risks to embedding solutions that are grounded in industry best practice.

From Knowledge to Connection

Knowledge is powerful, but it is the act of sharing and applying it that creates transformation. That is why the CoP runs quarterly knowledge-sharing sessions, where members present and discuss effective approaches in their own workplaces. These sessions help identify common challenges across industries and accelerate the spread of solutions.

Support also comes in the form of office hours and live training. Whether it is a specific question about a complex case or the need to deepen understanding of psychosocial hazards, members have access to experts who provide practical guidance.

The community is also active between formal sessions. Through the peer chat platform , members can connect in real time to troubleshoot, exchange ideas, and

provide mutual encouragement. This informal but vital layer of support ensures no member feels like they are doing the work alone.

The CoP’s Science Corner adds another dimension by distilling the latest research into digestible, practical insights. Members do not have to wade through journals to access evidence—they receive it in a format designed for immediate use in their professional practice.

Supporting Careers and Building the Field

The work of managing psychosocial risks is still emerging as a distinct field, and the Healthy Work CoP recognises this by also supporting members’ professional journeys. Its dedicated Job Board highlights opportunities across Australia and New Zealand in WHS, HR, psychosocial risk, and workplace mental health. For practitioners committed to this space, it is an invaluable resource for career progression.

Why Now

The costs of neglecting psychosocial risk are significant. Mental health-related claims are more expensive and slower to resolve than physical ones. Beyond claims, poorly managed psychosocial hazards erode trust, engagement, and productivity. The Healthy Work CoP exists to turn the tide by equipping leaders with the insights, tools, and community they need to take proactive, coordinated action.

More Than Membership

What sets the Healthy Work CoP apart is its combination of evidence, collaboration, and practical resources. It is not about adding another layer of work, but about making the work of psychosocial risk management easier, clearer, and more effective.

Membership is currently by waitlist, with an early adopter rate available. For WHS, HR, and Well-being leaders ready to shift from managing in silos to leading with collective intelligence, the Healthy Work Community of Practice is more than a membership. It is a catalyst for healthier, safer, and more productive workplaces.

PSYCHOSOCIAL SAFETY & WELLBEING SOLUTIONS

Retail’s Hard Reset on Safety: How aussie stores are using wearables to cut theft and aggression

Australian retail is undergoing a hard reset on safety. Shoplifting losses and customer aggression have accelerated since 2023, pushing retailers to act decisively, not with more guards at the door, but with smarter, connected technology on the floor.

New figures from the Australian Retailers Association show a 66% year-on-year jump in retail crime involving weapons, while violent and threatening events also spiked—an unmistakable sign the risk profile has changed.

The impact is being felt across formats, from supermarkets to department stores and specialty chains. In Victoria, police have linked a wave of brazen, coordinated thefts to organised groups, mirrored by a $10m theft-ring bust in Melbourne. Meanwhile, the 2024 ANZ Retail Crime Study estimates $7.79bn in annual losses nationwide—almost 2% of turnover— when shoplifting, fraud and aggression are combined.

From CCTV to Connected Safety

What’s different in 2025 is how stores are responding. Instead of relying solely on ceiling-mounted CCTV and after-the-fact reporting, retailers are deploying connected wearables and body-worn cameras (BWCs) that deter, de-escalate and deliver live evidence in seconds.

Trials and rollouts by leading Australian chains, from supermarkets to big-box retail, aim to reduce both theft and harm to staff by making interactions visible, verifiable, and linked to rapid response. Academic interest has followed: QUT researchers have highlighted BWCs’ potential to reduce abuse and violence in retail, noting growing adoption across major brands.

What Customers Think

Retailers often worry that cameras on staff might alienate shoppers. Evidence suggests the opposite. A recent YouGov study in the UK found that 71% of young customers were comfortable, or indifferent, about BWCs in retail settings. Closer to home, ANZ attitudinal research shows 54% of retail workers believe cameras make them feel safer, and nearly half see them as a clear deterrent.

What Actually Changes in Store

The most compelling results come when wearables and BWCs plug into a 24/7 monitored platform, turning a tense interaction into a timestamped, geo-located event with live video.

Australian retailers using BWCs report 40–65% deescalation rates, with many incidents calming down the moment recording begins. Beyond deterrence, systems that support live streaming, push-to-talk, and one-tap duress help managers verify incidents and triage police response faster.

Real-world results: In anonymised deployments of Duress Falcon wearables and Duress Eagle body-worn cameras across two major Australian department store networks, analytics show a 52% reduction in aggressive incidents and a 44% reduction in theft.

Compliance and Duty of Care

Technology is only half the story. States are tightening protections for retail workers, such as NSW’s tougher laws on shop-staff abuse. Demonstrating a defensible safety system—complete with signage, privacy-by-design, access controls, retention policies, and seamless police handover—doesn’t just reduce risk, it proves compliance to regulators, insurers and the public.

Why Retailers Are Standardising on Wearables + BWCs

1. Deterrence you can see – recording often deescalates incidents instantly.

2. Evidence you can use – live video accelerates police response and case outcomes.

3. Staff confidence – workers feel safer and more valued.

4. Smarter ROI – organised crime is tech-enabled; retailers need connected countermeasures to match.

Where Duress Fits

The Duress Falcon (connected wearable) and Duress Eagle (body-worn camera) are now trusted by leading retailers nationwide. Both stream video, audio and location live to a 24/7 monitoring centre within seconds, empowering immediate verification and the right level of escalation, all without adding friction at the checkout.

Why traditional hiring methods no longer work

As a physiotherapist and business owner, I’ve spent over a decade helping injured workers recover. The pattern was clear. Many of the injuries I treated could have been prevented entirely if the right hiring decisions were made at the start. Prevention, not rehabilitation, is where the real value lies.

Despite their good intentions, traditional hiring methods simply aren’t cutting it. Physical capacity tests, gut-feel interviews and reference checks focus too narrowly on what a candidate says they can do. What gets missed are the unseen risks that lie beneath the surface, like existing injuries, low resilience, and behavioural red flags. This gap in hiring creates costly consequences. One in three workplace injuries comes from aggravating an old injury. These are not visible in a resume or mentioned in an interview. Even more concerning, mental health claims are rising fast. They now cost four times more than physical injury claims and are harder to manage. Traditional hiring cannot detect these risks.

That’s why we created FitWorker360.

Our pre-employment assessments take a 360-degree view of each candidate, looking at their physical, mental and behavioural capabilities. Using over 160,000 data points and aligned with international standards, our

assessments are entirely online, backed by a forensiclevel psychometric tool and delivered in just 22 hours. If needed, our physiotherapists complete a remote physical evaluation via telehealth.

The results speak volumes. A leading NSW hospital cut their workers’ compensation premiums in half. An aged care provider saved $900,000 annually. Another client reduced their staff turnover by 29 percent. These are not one-off results. This is what happens when you hire smarter.

FitWorker360 started in the health and aged care sector, where injury risk is high. Now, we’re helping organisations in retail, labour hire and logistics do the same. Our triage model means only higher-risk candidates move to further testing, saving time and cost while ensuring compliance with the new Psychosocial Hazards Code of Practice.

Hiring has changed. It is no longer just about qualifications or experience. It is about fit. The right physical and mental fit leads to safer teams, lower claims, and stronger cultures.

If you're ready to step into the future of hiring, we invite you to meet us at the WHS Show in Sydney. Ready to start or book a no-obligation trial at fitworker360.com.au

Smarter hiring starts here. Safer workplaces begin with FitWorker360.

Transforming safety management through contractor compliance

Rapid Global harnesses AI to simplify safety management, streamline contractor processes, and strengthen compliance across entire worksites.

For today’s safety managers, compliance is more complex than ever. Contractors, visitors, and employees move through worksites daily, each carrying different responsibilities and risks. Ensuring they are trained, authorised, and compliant is not just about ticking a box. It is about building a culture of safety across the organisation.

Rapid Global helps organisations address this challenge with a suite of digital solutions designed to modernise contractor management while supporting every part of the safety process.

Building a connected safety ecosystem

Contractor management is just the beginning. Rapid’s platform integrates other safety functions into one connected ecosystem. Rapid Induct streamlines training and onboarding, while Rapid Access ensures only compliant personnel can enter a site. Rapid Incident enables real-time reporting from mobile devices or QR codes, and solutions such as Rapid Auditor and Rapid Monitor support proactive oversight, from simplifying audits to using AI to detect hazards faster than the human eye.

Contractor management at the core

At the heart of effective safety management lies contractor compliance. Rapid Contractor Management digitises the full process, including pre-qualification, licence and insurance checks, inductions, and ongoing compliance checks. Real-time dashboards and automated reminders ensure no detail slips through the cracks, while RapidCheck uses AI to instantly verify documentation. What once took days of phone calls and paperwork now happens in minutes.

Rapid Global’s clients have reported a 40% increase in contractor compliance, a 93% reduction in time verifying documents, and up to 60 hours saved each month on inductions. This allows safety managers to focus on strategy and leadership rather than administration.

At the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), hundreds of contractors and event staff need to be managed for every game or event. By implementing Rapid, the MCG gained live visibility of who was on site and whether they were compliant, streamlining oversight in one of Australia’s busiest venues. PepsiCo faced similar challenges across multiple operations. By adopting Rapid, the company achieved instant visibility of contractor status, automated certification checks, and a simplified onboarding process. The result was reduced risk and improved safety culture.

By connecting these functions, safety managers can move from reactive problem-solving to proactive risk management.

Trusted, secure and proven

Rapid Global supports thousands of clients with over 5 million users and 120,000 registered contracting companies. With over 20 years of innovation in WHS software, the company backs its technology with enterprisegrade security, including ISO 27001 certification and 256-bit encryption. Across industries from construction to manufacturing and facilities management, Rapid Global has a proven record of transforming safety processes to build trust with regulators, employees, contractors, and safety consultants.

Rapid Global’s clients have reported a 40% increase in contractor compliance, a 93% reduction in time verifying documents, and up to 60 hours saved each month on inductions. This allows safety managers to focus on strategy and leadership rather than administration.

How pre-employment medicals support safer hiring decisions

In today’s fast-paced and safety-conscious work environment, one of the most important decisions a business can make is who it hires. Getting that decision right means more than simply choosing someone with the right skills; it means ensuring that person is physically and medically fit to perform the role safely and effectively. For Recruiters and Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) Managers, this makes pre-employment medicals an essential tool in protecting both people and productivity from day one.

Across industries such as transport, construction, mining, manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare, preemployment medical assessments are increasingly seen as a non-negotiable step in the recruitment process. These assessments don’t just help organisations meet their duty of care obligations; they’re a critical risk management measure that can identify potential health issues before they become workplace injuries or long-term claims.

But with different job roles having different physical requirements, and with the added challenge of fastpaced hiring cycles, employers need a partner who can deliver fast, accurate, and tailored medical assessments at scale. That’s where Logic Health steps in.

Logic Health is one of Australia’s leading providers of occupational health services, with a strong focus on pre-employment medicals designed to support safer hiring decisions. With a nationwide footprint across metro and regional areas, Logic Health gives employers confidence in workforce screening.

Pre employment medicals

A typical pre-employment medical through Logic Health includes a comprehensive review of the candidate’s health, fitness, and functional capacity. Assessments are tailored to the specific physical and safety demands of the job in question, ensuring candidates can meet those requirements without putting themselves, or others, at risk.

Medicals can include:

‣ physical examinations

‣ musculoskeletal screening

‣ vision testing

‣ cardiovascular checks

‣ drug and alcohol screening

‣ and functional capacity evaluations.

Importantly, every candidate is seen by qualified occupational health practitioners with extensive experience in occupational risk assessment.

Health surveillance programs

Beyond pre-employment, role and risk based health surveillance tracks the ongoing health of workers exposed to hazards such as noise, respirable dust/ silica, and other safety-critical risks. Health Surveillance Programs are mapped to Australian WHS requirements, with appropriate intervals for audiometry, spirometry and targeted medicals, plus clear escalation pathways when clinical changes are detected. Doctor-led oversight ensures early detection, timely referrals and practical recommendations (e.g., task modification, PPE review, engineering controls), with privacy-compliant records maintained.

Our mobile/pop-up model delivers job specific medicals, functional assessments, instant drug & alcohol testing, audiometry, spirometry and vision screening across metro, regional and remote locations, with shiftfriendly timetables to minimise downtime. National coordination means multi-site programs run to one plan and standard for consistent quality.

Why speed, efficiency and flexibility is critical

Speed is often critical in recruitment, especially when vacancies need to be filled quickly. Our customer bookings and results portal brings everything together in one secure, centralised platform, allowing live calendar bookings, real-time tracking of appointments, and instant access to results the moment they are released. This visibility streamlines the entire recruitment process, eliminating back-and-forth scheduling and providing all documentation in one easy-to-access repository.

With rapid turnaround times, often within 24 hours, WHS and HR teams can make confident, informed hiring decisions quickly, keeping recruitment pipelines moving and minimising operational downtime.

Flexibility is another reason WHS managers turn to Logic Health. Pre-employment medicals can be configured to suit the unique requirements of each organisation and job role. Logic Health ensures each assessment is fit-forpurpose and compliant with relevant workplace safety and medical assessment standards. Whether you’re screening for general health and mobility, or testing jobspecific capabilities like manual handling, endurance, or working at heights, Logic Health can provide a solution that fits your workers.

Primary care with our partner, For Health

What further strengthens Logic Health’s position as a preferred partner is its connection to the ForHealth Group. With 100 multi-disciplinary Medical Centres across Australia, ForHealth is one of the largest primary care providers and the largest allied health provider in Australia. Logic Health clinics are located within these state-of-the-art health destinations, with services such as general practice, allied health, pathology, imaging and pharmacy under one roof.

Protect and prevent with Logic Health

Pre-employment medicals aren’t just about ticking boxes, they’re about protecting people and preventing problems before they arise. A robust assessment can reveal previously undiagnosed conditions or functional limitations that could impact a worker’s ability to perform the job safely. Identifying these risks early can prevent injuries, reduce workers’ compensation claims, lower absenteeism, and support a culture of care and compliance from the very start of employment.

With increasing pressure on businesses to maintain a safe and healthy workforce, Logic Health provides a streamlined, reliable solution to help organisations recruit smarter, safer, and faster. It also builds resilience into the workforce. Hiring the right person starts with knowing they’re ready for the job, physically, mentally, and medically. Logic Health helps you make that decision with clarity, confidence, and care.

Breathing easier: How CrewProtect™ 50 & 100 are changing the game in air decontamination

Firefighters and first responders are prepared to face just about anything including flames, hazardous materials, and high-risk situations.

Yet there are other dangers that linger long after the emergency ends. Inside apparatus bays, fire trucks, and emergency vehicles, crews are often exposed to airborne contaminants, including particulates from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and aerosols, which can quietly chip away at their health over time. In quarry and mining environments, airborne hazards which infiltrate machinery and equipment can pose equally dangerous safety concerns.

In addition to best practice safety measures to decontaminate gear and equipment, improving the air vehicle occupants breathe while they’re on the move is a critical step in protecting health and safety in a range of sectors.

The CrewProtect™ 50 & 100 available from GAAM Emergency Products raise the bar for in-vehicle air quality.

Developed specifically for emergency service vehicles, CrewProtect™ isn’t a one-size-fits-all air purifier. The advanced filtration technology is a purpose-built air decontamination system designed to thrive in the rugged, high-demand environment of fire trucks and ambulances. With steel construction and a powdercoated finish, each unit is compact, durable, and ready to withstand years of heavy use.

At the heart of CrewProtect™ is a multi-stage cartridge system that exceeds performance standards. The system captures 99.95% of particles at 0.3 microns, effectively filtering the fine particulates firefighters encounter daily. CrewProtect™ also targets a broad spectrum of gaseous pollutants and VOCs; the often odourless compounds that can have serious short- and long-term health effects.

With cancer and respiratory illness continuing to plague a variety of sectors, workplaces are demanding smarter solutions. CrewProtect™ 50 & 100 represent more than just air filtration; they represent a commitment to vehicle occupant health and longevity.

The result is cleaner, safer air inside the vehicle cabin, whether crews are responding to a fire scene, transporting team members, or simply heading back to base.

Fire departments are constantly balancing budgets, schedules, and staffing challenges, so the last thing they need is a complicated retrofit. CrewProtect™ makes integration simple. Installation requires only two wires and a few screws, meaning units can be added quickly to in-service vehicles or built directly into new apparatus through an OEM or dealer.

Departments also have the flexibility to scale protection. A single unit is ideal for smaller vehicles, or multiple CrewProtect™ systems working together in larger apparatus to maximise air filtration.

Protecting Those Who Protect Us

With cancer and respiratory illness continuing to plague a variety of sectors, workplaces are demanding smarter solutions. CrewProtect™ 50 & 100 represent more than just air filtration; they represent a commitment to vehicle occupant health and longevity. Backed by a three-year limited warranty, these systems provide peace of mind for those who put their lives on the line.

CrewProtect™ from GAAM Emergency Products delivers the invisible shield every crew deserves.

Reduce airborne contaminants in your apparatus

The TFT CrewProtect™ 50,100 and StationProtect™ packs a particulate and VOC smashing punch.

Easy to install and maintain, its high-performance, low power draw design is exactly what your vehicles and stations need to take health to the next level.

The advanced filtration technology doesn’t meet the standard; it raises the bar to a higher level.

9 Protects against particulates, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and aerosols, which cause short and long-term health concerns.

9 Multi-stage cartridge system collects 99.95% of particles at 0.3 microns and removes a broad range of gaseous pollutants.

9 Suitable for small to large firefighting apparatus and vehicles, and multiple units can be placed inside of a vehicle for improved filtration.

9 Easy installation on in-service units with only two wires and a few screws, or on new apparatus through your chosen OEM or apparatus dealer.

9 Made of steel and powder coated to withstand harsh environments inside emergency vehicles, each unit is compact, rugged, and incudes a three-year limited warranty.

If you manage safety, you know the feeling. A near miss gets called in on Monday morning, the photos sit in someone’s phone, follow-up actions hide in spreadsheets, and you’re still chasing last month’s training records. It’s frantic. It’s risky. It’s fixable.

Meet

Safety Champion

A workplace health and safety software built and implemented by people living and breathing safely. Since 2014, we’ve focused on making safety accessible for every worker and practical for every leader, with secure cloud records, native mobile apps, and configurable modules that fit your business.

Why teams pick Safety Champion and stay

Built by safety experts, not just techies: Safety Champion comes from years of real WHS experience. The software matches what actually happens at work. Easy workflows, useful checklists, and actions that makes sense.

‣ Designed for the field: Work happens everywhere, not just in the office. With our mobile app, anyone can report issues, do inspections, or find documents on the spot. The easier it is, the more people use it.

‣ Secure and reliable: Your safety data is protected. We're ISO27001 and ISO9001 certified, and we're a B Corporation too. You get strong controls and a partner that cares about more than profits.

‣ Everything in one place: Choose the tools you need, when you need them. This includes incident management, hazards, inspections, risks, training, chemicals, contractors, documents, attendance, analytics, and more. Leaders get a clear, single view instead of scattered spreadsheets.

‣ Easy to use: The design is clean and works on any device. Secure access and cloud storage make setup simple for everyone. If it's straightforward, people actually use it, and your safety program doesn’t depend on extra effort.

What Tuesday looks like with Safety Champion

A floor manager snaps a photo of a damaged fixture during opening checks and files a hazard report in the app. The system assigns a corrective action to maintenance with a due date and notifies the area manager. When the job is closed, the evidence is logged and analytics update automatically. At the next leadership meeting, you show a dashboard that highlights a downward trend in similar hazards after a change to your store setup guide. No drama. No backlog. Just safe, consistent work.

Shaping culture, not just ticking boxes

Compliance is vital, but people come first. Our software and support help make safety visible and straightforward for everyone, not just the safety manager. By empowering frontline workers to report, learn, and engage easily, you’ll see a shift from reluctant participation to a proactive culture. That’s where real progress happens.

If you’ve read this far, you already know the cost of doing nothing. Let’s fix the chaos and give your people a platform that makes safe work the easy choice. Join us on our journey to positively impact one billion lives by 2035.

Leadership as the Catalyst: Driving innovation in practical safety delivery

In Australian workplaces, particularly in construction and infrastructure, falls from height remain one of the most persistent and deadly risks. Despite years of regulatory enforcement, safety campaigns, and investment in equipment, the statistics tell a stubborn story.

In 2023 alone, falls from height accounted for 15% of all workplace fatalities, a 32% increase on the five-year average. These figures suggest that while existing frameworks may have stabilised the issue, they have not transformed it. To move the needle meaningfully, we need a different kind of intervention—one that begins not with systems or checklists, but with leadership.

The role of leadership

The role of leadership in safety is often acknowledged, but not always well understood. Too often, safety leadership is equated with policy approval, periodic reviews, or high-level communication. However, the real influence of leadership lies not in what is said or mandated from above, but in how those values are translated into everyday behaviours, decisions, and cultural norms. Strong leadership is visible, involved, and consistently aligned with safe outcomes, even when that comes at the cost of productivity or short-term gains.

Critically, many organisations fall into the trap of topdown safety leadership that fails to engage or empower those on the ground. A common mistake is treating safety as a compliance obligation, something to be measured through audits and injury rates rather than embedded as a strategic business value. When safety becomes about forms and KPIs, rather than about people and purpose, it fosters disengagement. Workers begin to see it as a bureaucratic exercise, rather than something that exists to protect them and those around them.

Genuine worker involvement

Another common misstep is the imposition of safety initiatives without genuine worker involvement. Leaders may introduce new equipment, procedures, or technologies without understanding the practical realities of their use. This often leads to resistance or workaround behaviours that reintroduce risk through the back door. True innovation in safety is most effective when it is co-designed, with operational workers, supervisors, and subject matter experts all having a voice in the process.

Consistency is key

Then there’s the issue of inconsistency. Workers observe what leaders prioritise when things are tight, do they push for productivity over procedure, or pause to deal with a risk? Culture is shaped by what is tolerated as much as by what is promoted. When leaders “talk the talk” but don’t “walk the walk,” credibility suffers. Workers may begin to assume that safety is conditional, important until it becomes inconvenient.

Focus on leading indicators

There’s also a tendency to focus on lagging indicators such as lost-time injuries or recordable incidents. While these metrics have their place, they often hide more than they reveal. A site with zero injuries might simply be a site where incidents go unreported. Leading indicators, like near miss reports, proactive hazard identification, training participation, and psychological safety, offer a more accurate picture of a safety culture’s maturity.

Develop real skills

Training is another area where leadership assumptions can fall short. Sending workers to a course or having them complete an online module does not guarantee competence. Real skill development requires taskspecific, practical instruction, behavioural reinforcement, and opportunities to practice decision-making in highrisk contexts. Leadership must be willing to invest in adaptive and ongoing training, not just induction-level compliance.

Cultural and psychological barriers to change

Perhaps most importantly, some leaders overlook the cultural and psychological barriers to change. Workers may resist safety interventions for reasons that are not technical, but human: pride, fear of embarrassment, peer pressure, or mistrust of management. Successful safety leadership acknowledges these realities and works to build environments where it is safe to speak up, admit uncertainty, and learn from mistakes.

Cultivating engagement is key

What all of this shows is that leadership in safety is less about commanding from the top and more about cultivating engagement from within. It’s about enabling innovation not by mandate, but by building a culture that is open to new ideas, transparent about risks, and united in its purpose to protect people.

Transforming safety performance, especially in high-risk environments like working at height, demands this kind of leadership. It requires executives and managers to step into the safety conversation with humility, curiosity, and resolve. It calls for a reimagining of safety not as a function, but as a shared mindset, where innovation isn’t just about the latest gear, but about smarter systems, stronger relationships, and a more empowered workforce.

In the end, the organisations that succeed in building resilient, high-performing safety cultures will be those whose leaders do more than sponsor initiatives. They will be the ones who lead visibly, consistently, and collaboratively, knowing that the future of safety depends not just on better rules, but on better leadership.

FIND

Many lives are still lost each year in Australia because first aid fails or is not feasible in a choking emergency.

Manufactured exclusively in the USA and assembled in Australia under the regulatory requirements of the TGA, the genuine LifeVac is used in schools, businesses, councils, the aged and disability sector and by thousands of parents. LifeVac has helped save over 4200 lives worldwide after first aid has failed or could not be performed. LifeVac is patented, regulated and backed by 15 peer-reviewed studies and is replaced free of charge if used in an emergency. The device can be used on a person in any position (even on yourself) and on any age. Due to its patented one-way valve, nothing can be forced down the airway when applied; LifeVac only creates safe, non-invasive suction in a choking emergency.

Even the best first aid measures are only 70% successful in severe upper airway obstruction, and some alternative, unevidenced Australian techniques work in less than 50% of cases. Back blows alone are less than 25% successful in severe obstructions. In independent tests, LifeVac successfully removes 97% of obstructions on the first application, rising to 100% by the third application.

4 Minutes from the incident to brain

Median Ambulance response time in NSW to the highest priority is 8.3 minutes (not counting time to access and begin patient care). Only 63.6% are responded within 10 mins in life threatening emergencies.
