Komm, Jesu, komm, mein leib ist müde, Come, Jesus, come, my body is weary, die kraft verschwindt je mehr und mehr; my strength is waning, ich sehne mich nach deine Frieden; I long for thy peace, der saure Weg wird mir zu schwer! the hard path is too much for me. Komm, komm, ich will mich dir ergeben, Come, I will yield myself to thee, du bist der rechte weg, Thou art the way, die Wahrheit und das Leben. the Truth and the Life.
Drum schliess ich mich in deine Hände I entrust myself into thy hands und sage, Welt, zu guter Nacht! and bid thee, world, farewell. Eilt gleich mein Lebenslauf zu Ende, The sands of life are running out, ist doch der Geist wohl angebracht. yet the spirit is ready; Er soll bei seinem Schöpfer schweben, it shall hover before its maker, weil Jesus ist und bleibt for Jesus is and shall be der wahre Weg zum Leben. the true Way to life.
This piece is based on the motet “Komm, Jesu, komm” by J. S. Bach. There are also some direct quotations from this motet (bar 1-4, 16, 44 and 129-136).
This piece should be performed with a minimal use of vibrato. When “a 1” appears, one singer continues, still with a minimal use of vibrato.
Always use German pronunciation for incomplete (divided) words, and single syllables.
