Building Reading Confidence:

How ABC to read is supporting Berkshire children during the National Year of Reading

As part of the National Year of Reading, Berkshire children’s charity ABC to read has committed to delivering more than 50,000 one-to-one and small group reading sessions in local schools over the coming year. The pledge responds to growing concern about falling reading for pleasure and its impact on children’s learning, wellbeing and future opportunities.

ABC to read works with over 100 primary and secondary schools across Berkshire, providing trained volunteers to support children who are struggling to read. Alongside direct reading sessions, the charity runs peer-to-peer workshops that enable older pupils to help younger readers, and sessions for parents focused on building positive reading habits at home.

For many children, the impact is immediate. Liam, aged eight, arrived in Year 3 lacking confidence after missing key learning during the pandemic. Reading aloud made him anxious, and he avoided books where possible. After being matched with an ABC to read volunteer, he began reading twice a week in a calm, supportive setting. Within a term, his fluency improved, his vocabulary grew, and he began choosing books for himself. His teacher described the change as transformative, not only for reading, but for his wider confidence in class.

ABC to read is the only charity in Berkshire offering a comprehensive literacy support service delivered by trained, vetted and DBS-checked volunteers. By combining structured support in schools with work that involves pupils and families, the charity aims to ensure that no child is held back simply because reading feels out of reach. Watch their skills and confidence grow

With over 60 years of experience and more than 3.5 million students worldwide, it’s no surprise that Kumon is the world’s leading supplementary education provider. The Kumon Maths and English Programmes are carefully designed to help children of all ages build confidence, improve concentration, and develop strong independent study skills that support success at school and beyond. Through daily, personalised study, children progress step by step at a level that suits them, gaining resilience, selfmotivation and a real sense of achievement along the way.

Now is the perfect time for your family to discover the benefits of Kumon. Kumon study centres across Berkshire are offering Free Registration to new students from 1st February, giving families the chance to save money while investing in their child’s learning. Places are limited, so be sure to book before the offer ends on 15th March. For more information about Kumon and to book your child’s free assessment, contact your local Instructor via the website at www.kumon.co.uk

Real experiences from Foster Carers in Wokingham

“We love ‘our foster children’ as we get to play games together and it makes them happy. I feel happy that they live here” said daughters aged 4yrs and 6yrs. Wokingham Borough Foster Carers, Amy and Will: “We like fostering because it fills our heart with so much love and joy. There are challenges, especially when you have children of your own as well. It’s trying to work out a new balance that works for you all, but the amount of love you receive from another little person in your life as a family is incredible and well worth it. It’s the best experience we’ve ever had, and we fully encourage anyone interested in fostering to find out more. We are so very grateful that we have had this experience and couldn’t imagine our life any other way.” For information on fostering with Wokingham Borough, call 0300 131 2797 or visit fostering.wokingham.gov.uk

Making financial education simple in primary schools

Newbury Building Society has updated its Junior Newbury Building Society (JNBS) scheme for schools local to its branches in Newbury, Thatcham, Hungerford, and Wokingham.

Our workshops, created by a former deputy headteacher, introduce key money concepts to children in key stage 1 and 2, including:

Keeping money safe

Spending

Saving Needs vs. wants

Budgeting

What schools are saying:

“The [JNBS] session was engaging, informative, and incredibly supportive of the children’s learning. The children not only gained new knowledge about banking, saving and budgeting but also built on their existing understanding of internet safety and scams in a meaningful way.”

The words of Ernest –a 9 year old with ADHD

“ADHD is my superpower; it makes me unique and gives me a strong imagination. I think differently, which helps me solve problems. I can think quickly. Everyone is special and needs help sometimes. Knowing I have ADHD means I get help at school, like fidgets and a wobble cushion. I have lots of energy, which I like. I’m not scared of things like riding my bike on a ramp or jumping on the ‘leap of faith’ like Spiderman! Waiting is hard because I get excited and want to start straight away. I love cooking and creating – I don’t worry about mistakes because I like learning my own way.”

His words remind us that ADHD brings strengths as well as challenges, and with support, children can thrive.

Berkshire Psychology offer autism and ADHD assessments for adults and children. Contact the friendly and experienced team at their assessment centre in Swallowfield (just outside Reading) to find out more. W: www.berkshirepsychology.co.uk

Newbury Building Society offer Junior Workshops

From 2028, financial education will become a compulsory part of the primary curriculum – a major step toward helping young people feel confident and capable when it comes to money.

Newbury Building Society have been championing financial education since 2008 through their Junior Newbury Building Society (JNBS) scheme, which was recently refreshed to reflect how today’s children spend and save. The new workshops, created by a former deputy head, are curriculum-aligned for Key Stages 1 and 2, giving teachers fun, ready-made lessons packed with games, videos, and teamwork. Workshops can be delivered by the Society or teachers, providing schools with flexibility and ownership.

So far, more than 100 pupils in Berkshire have taken part, and the new workshops are already earning glowing reviews from schools such as Curridge Primary, who described their session as “engaging, informative, and incredibly supportive of the children’s learning.”

First-hand account of Grove Academy

The staff have been amazing and have helped us a lot since we came here.” When the family moved to Slough last year, Danjela searched online for a good school and was pleased to discover Grove Academy. “I looked at all the information about the school and thought it sounded like a good school,” she says. “It is close to where we live and, because it is an allthrough school, both my boys can go there.” This allows Danjela to take her sons to the same place each morning and collect them together in the afternoon. Her youngest daughter, Erda, attends a nursery nearby. St George’s School Windsor Castle strengthens mindfulness programme

At St George’s, the new year has brought with it a renewed focus on helping children discover the power of a simple pause. Throughout the school day, students from Kindergarten to Year 8 are encouraged to stop for a moment, take a few slow, deep breaths, and gently focus on their breathing.

This small habit is part of a wider programme designed to support children’s mental health and help students build their own toolkit of vital coping strategies.

Slow, deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to lower heart rate and reduce stress hormones like cortisol. Studies show even a minute or two of controlled breathing can improve focus, emotional regulation and resilience. By practising the pause regularly, children at St George’s are learning skills that support both wellbeing now and emotional confidence for life. To find out more, join the school’s upcoming Open Morning on Friday 20th March. W: www.stgwindsor.org

Ayaan’s writing and performing skills are being positively developed by the motivating teachers at Grove Academy

Enjoying learning

Noreen and Khawer are pleased their son, Ayaan, is thriving in Year 9 at Grove Academy and that the staff are motivating him to work hard and succeed with his studies. Noreen says: “Ayaan likes all his subjects but particularly enjoys English. He loves writing short stories and poems and two of his stories have been published in a young writers’ story book.”

Keen student

“We would certainly recommend Grove Academy to other families looking for a good primary and secondary school in this area. We are satisfied that it was a good decision to send Ayaan there. After three years at the school, Ayaan is still very happy at Grove Academy and keen to go to school each day. He is progressing well and being helped by the teachers to achieve his full potential academically.”

Children say

Ayaan says: “Grove Academy is a great place to attain knowledge and gain motivation. The staff and Safeguarding Team do a fantastic job of keeping my

friends and I safe, and I feel comfortable around the school. The Grove 5 (Relentless Readers, Knowledge Retrievers, Critical Connectors, Quality Talkers and Active Learners) give us a foundation to the school’s standards and expectations, and guidelines to follow towards success. There are what seem to be endless opportunities, and extracurricular activities, to participate in, some of my favourites being Music, Drama, and Writing, allowing for a more fruitful and enjoyable time. With the help and reassurance of my parents, friends, staff, and teachers, I am certain my time at Grove Academy will be joyous, purposeful, and supportive for my future and my aspirations when I leave. I am satisfied and happy at Grove and proud to be a part of it.

Good communication

Noreen likes the way the school keep the parents informed about their children’s progress. She says: “Grove Academy send regular newsletters and there is also a ClassCharts that you can look at where they put on details about homework and other information. We are always made to feel welcome at the school when we go in for meetings with the teachers.”

Friendly community

Noreen is pleased that Grove Academy is a diverse community where all students get on together well, and parents find that they also get on well with the other parents whenever they go to the school for events.

Talent recognised

“Even though it seemed a big school to Ayaan after the primary school he had attended, he settled in well at Grove Academy when he started in Year 7,” Noreen says. “He liked the school and got on well with all his teachers and he is always happy to go there every day. He won a trophy for a poem he wrote in Grove’s Got Talent in his first year.”

New friends

Ayaan plays the piano and guitar and also won a trophy for his music band in Grove’s Got Talent two years later, Noreen says. “He likes all the subjects, but English and Music are his two favourite classes. Ayaan now has a good circle of friends. All the children came from different primary schools, but have mixed well since they started at the school.”

Noreen and Khawer live in Slough with their son, Ayaan, who is 14.
