In 1995, the MAC took a bold step forward with the acquisition of the Town & Country Racquet Club. This purchase was designed to better serve the Club's growing and active membership at a time when fitness and wellness were becoming an increasingly important part of the member experience. Shortly thereafter, the Club underwent a major renovation of the fitness center, adding a dedicated cardio room, a spacious aerobics studio, and upgraded state-of-the-art fitness equipment. The changes quickly became a cornerstone of daily life at MAC West.
Thirty years later, the MAC is once again writing a new chapter in its history. In 2025, the Club expanded to now include MAC Clayton, offering members a vibrant space in the heart of the Clayton business district. At the same time, the Club is actively looking toward the future of MAC West through the West Master Planning Sessions, led by renowned architectural firm Peacock + Lewis. Just as the 1995 expansion reflected the needs and ambitions of the era, today’s projects are designed to ensure the MAC continues to thrive for generations to come.

hope each of you had a wonderful summer and were able to enjoy the many offerings and amenities of our great Club. As August comes to a close, we also wrap up Foundations’ Month with the annual MAC Sports Foundation Golf Tournament and Auction at Norwood Hills Country Club. I am pleased to report that this year’s event was a complete sellout and an enormous success, reflecting the continued enthusiasm and generosity of our membership. A heartfelt thank you goes to Past President John Bugh for once again serving as event chair, and to Katie Maurer and her team for their exceptional coordination. Their hard work and dedication ensured the tournament was not only successful but also a meaningful celebration of our Club’s philanthropic spirit.
As of the submission deadline for this article, the Board of Governors had not yet met to formally approve the fiscal year 2026 budget, which begins Sept. 1. While the final vote remains ahead, I am pleased to share that the past 11 months have been tremendously active for the Missouri Athletic Club, and the Board is fully committed to carrying the momentum of this past year into the new fiscal year.
The 2026 budget will be thoughtfully aligned with our most important priorities: elevating the member experience and continuing to invest in meaningful capital improvements at both Clubhouses. These initiatives reflect our shared commitment to ensuring the MAC not only maintains its rich traditions but also evolves to meet the needs of our current and future members.
The budgeting process is never easy. It requires balancing ambition with responsibility, weighing our aspirations for growth against the practical stewardship of the Club’s resources. I am deeply grateful to those who have dedicated their time, expertise, and energy to this important work. Special thanks are due to General Manager/ COO Chip; Chief Financial Officer Pam Roth; Accounting Manager Jeremy Covey; Treasurer Matt Masiel; Finance Committee Chair Peggy Northcott; the entire finance committee; and, of course, the Board of Governors. Their
diligence and collaboration have been instrumental in preparing a budget that reflects both fiscal discipline and visionary leadership.
The Membership Department recently hosted a new and exciting event in the Downtown Clubhouse Art Lounge: the Meet Me at the MAC Engagement Fair. This inaugural gathering brought members together in a casual, welcoming setting to learn more about the variety of Clubs Within the Club (CWC) opportunities available at the MAC.
A big thank you goes to Elizabeth Brown, Member Engagement Manager, and the entire Membership staff for organizing such a well-planned and enjoyable evening. Their efforts created a lively atmosphere where camaraderie, engaging conversations, and delicious food were enjoyed by all in attendance.
This successful kickoff marks the first of what will be a series of events designed to help new members become more involved in the Club and to introduce them to the many CWCs that enrich our MAC community. These groups, which range from the Wine Society and Business Development Group to the Golf Club, provide something for everyone and play a vital role in fostering the sense of connection that makes our Club so unique. We look forward to building on the success of this event and continuing to create opportunities for members to connect, engage, and experience all the MAC has to offer.
As autumn ushers in shorter days and cooler breezes, I encourage you to take advantage of our rich calendar of events scheduled this fall. Gather with old friends, welcome new ones, and rediscover the sheer joy of belonging to this extraordinary MAC community.
I look forward to seeing you around the Club.
Warm regards,
There is quite a bit of news to share as we look ahead to our Downtown, West, and Clayton operations.
We recently completed master planning work sessions with Peacock + Lewis. If you were unable to attend, one of the sessions was recorded and is available on our website. Thank you for your continued input in shaping the future of MAC West.
Survey findings relating to the West planning efforts are also available on the website. With 1,100 responses, the feedback provides reliable insights into member expectations. This information is already guiding operational adjustments and will shape the master plan.
We are targeting an upgrade to the Stan Musial Grille, a direct response from the member survey feedback. We will continue to honor this Saint Louis legend while refreshing this casual dining space.
A new Chef, to be hired at a later date, will inject new ideas and momentum to our culinary program at MAC West. The member survey will directly guide menu improvements, and enhanced offerings will be introduced in the coming weeks.
Projects are a top priority in the months ahead. A few highlights:
F The ballroom will be finished by mid-October.
F Updates to the third-floor meeting rooms (Crystal Room) will create additional options for private event and meeting space in addition to the Art Lounge.
F A new bar concept is planned for the Art Lounge, with light bites, entertainment, and specialty events such as wine tastings.
F Enhancements to the Sportsman’s Club lunch buffet are also planned.
Planning and preparations continue for a successful launch.
F With 625 current MAC members already committed, outreach for MAC Clayton is underway. Members are encouraged to refer prospective members to the membership department.
F Temporary offices have been set up in Suite 150 on the first floor of the Pierre Laclede Center (7701 Forsyth Blvd.).
F The executive chef search, led by Greg Gerber, is in its mid-stages. An announcement is expected in early October. Key support team hires will phase in leading up to the opening.
F Construction continues, including sprinkler installation on the 14th and 15th floors. MAC is working with HOK on décor and design, and a general contractor will be selected by the end of September.
As President Kozeny recently communicated, September marks the start of another budget year. Over the past 24 months, MAC has experienced significant progress:
F Dues revenue: up $2.58 million (+ 32%)
F Initiation fees: up $407,000 (+ 135%)
F Operating revenues: up $2.26 millions (+ 18.4%)
This momentum is driven by membership growth and a continued focus on delivering a true private club experience. Operating costs have also increased more than 20%, reflecting this growth. The new fiscal year will focus on continued expansion and efficient operations. We are fortunate to have an outstanding Human Resources team. Chris Maurer has led the department for more than 26 years, building a team that supports more than 500 employees, foreign visa workers, and independent contractors. Their dedication helps make MAC an employer of choice. A heartfelt thank-you to our HR team!
As always, please let me or any member of the management team know how we can enhance your MAC experience.
Donald “Chip” Misch, CCM COO/General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

As of Aug. 20, more than 625 members have opted to add the MAC Clayton amenity! Thanks to your continued enthusiasm and support, MAC Clayton is moving forward with great momentum. We’re thrilled to share the latest update on our progress and next steps for this exciting new chapter.
We’ve continued our collaboration with HOK to thoughtfully design a bespoke interior that reflects the elegance of the space and history of the MAC, while aligning with our forward-looking vision. Every detail — from ceilings and lighting to acoustics, dining areas, bar, lounges, co-working, and operational spaces — has been crafted with our members and employees in mind.
In mid-July, installation of fire sprinklers began on the 14th and 15th floors. We’re grateful to our landlord, Hoffman Commercial Real Estate, for their partnership and support in realizing our shared vision for MAC Clayton — including the fitness center on the 13th floor.
We are targeting mid-September to complete the bid process for selecting our General Contractor. Once awarded, we’ll confirm a projected timeline for completing the remaining improvements.
With over 625 MAC members already having added the MAC Clayton amenity, we are finalizing preparations to open membership to new applicants. More details will be shared soon! We previously introduced Greg Gerber, Director of Operations, and Morgan Smith, Membership Manager. We are also actively recruiting for our executive chef, in partnership with a national search firm. We’ve received strong interest from candidates with impressive credentials and deep private club experience. We anticipate selecting our final candidate in October.
We are currently planning a soft opening in early 2026, followed by a formal grand opening celebration shortly thereafter. We will share firm dates as we finalize construction milestones and inspection timing.
MAC Clayton will offer a wide range of premium amenities to enhance your club experience, including:
F Elevated dining and social spaces
F Co-working space with private meeting rooms
F Additional private event and meeting rooms
F Employee locker rooms
F An enhanced fitness area with locker rooms
F Outdoor patio access for special events and gatherings
These features are designed to elevate the member experience and foster new opportunities for connection, recreation, and relaxation.
During the St. Louis Art Fair in Clayton, Sept. 5-7, we will be hosting exclusive member events for those who have selected the MAC Clayton amenity. Invitations for registration have been sent to those members.
In the coming weeks, we’ll begin sharing updated visuals to give you a closer look at the transformation of MAC Clayton as it comes to life.
We deeply appreciate your support, patience, and engagement throughout this process. The journey has been a collaborative one, and we’re incredibly excited to welcome you to this new chapter in the club’s story.
Stay tuned for more updates—and we can’t wait to welcome you to MAC Clayton soon.
Jodi Petersen, Past President Missouri Athletic Club
Since the early 1900s, the Missouri Athletic Club Art Collection has included numerous artworks of various styles and mediums. With the well-known identity as the Gateway to the West, St. Louis’ connection to its western past is apparent in the art pieces in the Downtown Clubhouse lobby and Art Lounge.
While walking through the main lobby seating area, cowboy artist James Reynolds’ “The Trail Boss” depicts a lone cowboy on horseback in the vast expanse of the plains. Along the same wall hangs an oil painting of Taos Native Americans by St. Louis native Oscar Berninghaus. Nearby, a wintry western scene from artist William Gollings offers a different impression of the life of a cowboy as he guides cattle through snow.
Several sculptures and statues grace the rooms of the Missouri Athletic Club, as well. Among those depicting St. Louis’ western past is Cody Houston’s “Frontier Spirits,” which currently sits outside of the Preservation Gallery in the lobby. This bronze sculpture incorporates countless elements, from cattledrawn carriages and cowboys to miniature scenes of western life. Perhaps the most well-known sculpture in the Downtown Clubhouse is that of Sacajawea by artist Karl Heidenreich, which stands in the Art Lounge among several artworks of many varieties.

On Sept. 11, the Book Club views Huckleberry Finn through Jim’s eyes when John Hoehn guides us through “James” by Percival Everett. A winner of numerous accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the National Book Award and the Kirkus Prize for Fiction, a New York Times Bestseller, and named A Best Book of the Year by several publications, “James” promises to be a fascinating odyssey.
When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As avid readers of American literature are aware, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond. Brimming
with the electrifying humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim’s agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before.
On Oct. 9, John Salter pilots us as we take flight with “The Wright Brothers” by David McCullough.
On Dec. 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright's Wright Flyer became the first powered, heavier-than-air machine to achieve controlled, sustained flight with a pilot aboard. The Age of Flight had begun. How did they do it? And why? David McCullough tells the extraordinary and truly American story of the two brothers who changed the world.
Sons of an itinerant preacher and a mother who died young, Wilbur and Orville Wright grew up on a small side
street in Dayton, Ohio, in a house that lacked indoor plumbing and electricity but was filled with books and a love of learning. The brothers ran a bicycle shop that allowed them to earn enough money to pursue their mission in life: flight. In the 1890s flying was beginning to advance beyond the glider stage, but there were major technical challenges the Wrights were determined to solve. They traveled to North Carolina's remote Outer Banks to test their plane because there they found three indispensable conditions: constant winds, soft surfaces for landings, and privacy.
In this revelatory book, master historian David McCullough draws on nearly 1,000 letters of family correspondence plus diaries, notebooks, and family scrapbooks in the Library of Congress to tell the full story of the Wright brothers and their heroic achievement.

Through KidSmart, a nonprofit that provides free school supplies to 90,000 students in need across the St. Louis area, hundreds of children will start the year prepared thanks to the Charitable Society for Children (CSC) and Missouri Athletic Club members’ generosity.
The MAC has been committed to charitable giving since its inception, and the CSC carries on that tradition. This Club within the Club was started by Sam Hopmeier in 2005. Since his passing, it has continued under the leadership of members Nat Walsh and Jared King.
“Sam Hopmeier was one of my dear friends,” MAC member Nancy Suelflow said. “It’s nice to see his legacy continue as more and more charities in the St. Louis area are supported.”
Each year, the CSC chooses three charities to support through fundraising, donations, and volunteer opportunities for MAC members. From mid-July to mid-August, MAC members purchased items from KidSmart’s Amazon Wish List and delivered them to either clubhouse.
O n the morning of Saturday, Aug. 16, members met at the West Clubhouse to fill the MAC shuttle with the collected donations. Volunteers from the MAC Swim & Dive team led the effort along with CSC representatives. On Tuesday, Aug. 19, the shuttle delivered the donations to KidSmart’s headquarters in Maryland Heights where another batch of volunteers unloaded the items to be sorted later. For many members, it was a meaningful way to see firsthand how their contributions make a difference.
“Teachers are our main method of distribution,” Abbie Enlund,
KidSmart’s vice president of philanthropy and development, said. “They are our eyes and ears in the community because they know what their students need better than anyone else.”
KidSmart also hosts back-to-school events where volunteers deliver backpacks filled with supplies directly into classrooms.
“The looks on the kids’ faces are priceless,” Enlund said. “Volunteers walk around with backpacks hanging from their arms, and the children get to choose their favorite color or pattern.”
MAC members have the opportunity to be part of one of these days on Thursday, Oct. 16. To learn more and sign up, contact Elizabeth Brown at ebrown@mac-stl.org
Suelflow has been an MAC member for 27 years and has been involved with the CSC for the past six. She sits on the CSC’s charity selection committee and encourages more members to get involved.

Nominations for the CSC’s 2026 charities are open Oct. 1-24. The nominator will give a 5-minute presentation on Tuesday, Nov. 18, between 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Did you know that you may not need a prescription for physical therapy?
It’s called direct access, and it empowers you to be your own health care advocate. You may be able to be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a physician’s prescription.*
This means you can start treatment more quickly to restore your strength, regain your skills and reduce any pain.
D epending upon the diagnosis, your therapist at SSM Health Physical Therapy may recommend that you follow up with a physician or other licensed health care professional before beginning your treatment.
Getting therapy first may help you:
• Save time
• Save money
• Expedite treatment
• Avoid opioids
• Prevent surgery
If your physician does prescribe physical therapy, you are not obligated to receive physical therapy in any specific facility. You have the right to choose where you want to go.
When choosing the right physical therapy provider, SSM Health Physical Therapy offers:
• Therapists who are licensed by the state and many hold advanced certifications.
• Participation with most insurance plans, which may help to minimize any out-ofpocket expenses.
• Submission of claims to your insurance company and help estimating any personal financial responsibilities.
• Examples of comments our patients provided so that you may learn more about their experiences with our care.
• Accreditation by the Joint Commission, which ensures the highest level of quality and patient safety.
You are the most important member of your health care team and are free to choose the rehabilitation provider that can best help you meet your goals.

What we eat affects our metabolism. The most effective way to support your metabolism with essential vitamins and minerals is by following a healthy, balanced diet rich in whole foods. While taking supplements won’t magically speed up your metabolism, they help fill in nutritional gaps and prevent issues like unexpected weight gain. Keep in mind that some supplements can cause side effects or make certain health conditions worse, so always check with your doctor before introducing supplements to your diet.
VITAMIN B (B12, B6, B1)
Helps convert food into energy, supports metabolism, and reduces fatigue. Deficiency in vitamin B can affect one’s metabolism.
F B-12 is essential for the metabolism of proteins and fats. It needs B-6 and folate to work correctly.
F B-6 helps to metabolize protein, which is how the body creates amino acids to use for energy, muscle repair, and other vital functions.
F B-1 Thiamine helps the body metabolize fat, protein, and carbohydrates, ensuring the body uses these nutrients for energy rather than storing them as fat.
Foods that contain B vitamins: Lean meats and seafood, whole grains (barley and
brown rice), dairy products, eggs, some fruits (bananas, apples, grapes, and watermelon), nuts and seeds, some vegetables (spinach, potatoes, and squash).
Regulates hormones like insulin and leptin, which controls hunger and fat storage. Low levels are linked to higher body fat and difficulty losing weight. Vitamin D may help control blood sugar and improve insulin resistance in people with diabetes. Vitamin D levels should be checked annually – talk to your doctor about supplements if your levels are low. The easiest way to increase vitamin D is sun exposure; be sure to wear sunscreen!
Foods that contain vitamin D include: Egg yolks, fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, and sardines), cod liver oil, beef liver, fortified dairy, fortified plant-based milk, fortified breakfast cereals, some types of mushrooms.
Studies have shown postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes, eating vitamin D-fortified yogurt, improved their blood sugar levels and reduced inflammation.
Helps maintain healthy metabolism, blood sugar control, and healthy bones. Research suggests that higher calcium intake combined with vitamin D can assist diet-related weight loss. Studies have also found that a diet high
in dairy calcium enhanced weight loss in people with type 2 diabetes. The main reason I do not cut dairy out of my plans is because studies have shown people consuming dairy like low-fat yogurt have lost the most belly fat.
Foods high in calcium:
Milk, yogurt, fortified cereals, fortified orange juice, dark green, leafy vegetables, seeds, and almonds.
Helps to support blood sugar control, reduces stress, helps with muscle recovery, and sleep – all essential for weight loss. Without magnesium, the chemical reactions that produce energy in the body cannot happen.
Food with Magnesium:
Nuts and seeds, legumes, spinach, bananas, salmon and halibut, whole grains, and potatoes.
Speak to a doctor before taking magnesium supplements as they may have adverse effects in people with some underlying health conditions.
In addition to B vitamins, vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium, other nutrients like iron, zinc, chromium, and iodine also support metabolism, hormone balance, and energy use. A well-rounded diet with a variety of whole foods is the best way to get what your body needs for healthy weight management.

The final days of summer at the West Clubhouse were buzzing with excitement! Camp MAC got a surprise cool-down on Friday, Aug. 1 when West County EMS & Fire Protection stopped by to turn on the hose. The week of Aug. 4, young swimmers made waves at Synchronized Swimming Camp. Cheer Camp ended with a spirited performance on Thursday, Aug. 7.
Those who have visited the Downtown Clubhouse recently may have noticed elegant enhancements to the Art Lounge and 2nd Floor foyer; fresh touches that blend modern sophistication with the MAC’s historic charm.
As mentioned in the August issue of the Cherry Diamond, MAC member Keith Barket once again partnered with the Pisani Painting Company to bring new artistry to the Club. This time, the team added gold finishing to the Art Lounge ceiling, echoing the decorative detail they introduced to the lobby last year. Now, shimmering gold trim highlights the ceiling paneling between the iconic marble columns, creating a warm and timeless glow.
Ascending the grand staircase, members will also notice thoughtful updates to the 2nd Floor foyer. The grandfather clock has found a new home beside the President’s Corner beneath the GM’s office, while textured wallpaper and striking gold chandeliers set the stage for a more inviting and sophisticated atmosphere.
The work isn’t finished yet. Coming soon, members can look forward to new furnishings on the landing, as well as refreshed carpet, drapery, and paint in the Missouri Room. Each step of this renovation is designed to honor the Club’s rich traditions while enhancing the spaces where members gather and celebrate.
Stay tuned for further updates on these capital projects through the Club’s social media and in future issues of the Cherry Diamond
