s we transition into November and the season of giving thanks, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to each of you for continued support and engagement with the Club community. This time of year offers a moment to reflect on what we have accomplished together and the many people whose dedication makes our Club such a special place.
One of the most rewarding aspects of membership at the MAC is the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy. As we look toward 2026, I would like to encourage all members to consider serving on the Board of Governors or getting involved through committee service.
Having the honor of serving as a governor, and now as president, has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my time at the MAC. It provides not only a deeper understanding of how the Club operates but also a unique chance to shape its future and strengthen its traditions. I can confidently say that any former governor would agree that the experience is both enriching and fulfilling.
If you have an interest in running for the Board or becoming more involved through committee participation, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, any current governor, or one of our past presidents or governors.
Past President Neal Perryman is serving as chair of the Nominating Committee this year, with Past President Jodi Petersen as vice chair. Your leadership and insights are vital to ensuring the MAC continues to thrive for generations to come. Learn more on Page 11.
As the holidays approach, I would also like to highlight another meaningful way members can show their appreciation: the Employee Holiday Fund. In many ways, our employees are the heart and soul of the MAC. They are the friendly faces who greet us each day and the behind-thescenes professionals who make every dining experience, event, and workout exceptional.
I see firsthand how our staff consistently go above and beyond their expected duties to serve our members with care and excellence. Contributing to the Employee Holiday Fund is a wonderful way to express our gratitude and support for those who make our Club experience so remarkable. Every contribution, large or small, makes a difference and serves as a tangible reminder to staff that their efforts are noticed and deeply appreciated.
Of course, gratitude can be shown in many ways. I encourage you to take a moment to personally thank the staff you interact with this month — whether a kind word to a server, a note of thanks to a trainer, or a simple acknowledgment of a job well done.
In September, the Board of Governors traveled to Philadelphia for our annual retreat. The trip was self-funded and represented a meaningful investment of time and resources from our volunteer leaders, for which I am deeply grateful.
We were graciously hosted by the Union League of Philadelphia and toured several of its affiliated properties, including Torresdale, Liberty Hill, and the Guard House. The visit proved invaluable, offering insight from Union League General Manager Jeff McFadden and his team that provided many practical takeaways.
The Union League’s growth from one historic clubhouse to seven unique destinations highlighted the importance of long-term planning and strong leadership. This knowledge is especially relevant as we prepare to open our new Clayton location.

That same focus guides ongoing collaboration with Peacock + Lewis and the Planning Committee as we refine the West Clubhouse Master Plan. Member and staff feedback continues to shape this process as we work toward a comprehensive, phased plan for sustainable growth and a best-in-class facility.

On Oct. 10, family and friends of our dear friend and Past Governor Tim Powers gathered to celebrate his memory with the dedication of a Fred Conway art piece in the 1903 Bar. This artwork beautifully reflects Tim’s lifelong passion for golf and his many years of service as chair of the MAC Golf League. The plaque reads: “In memory of our friend Tim Powers, presented by the members of the Missouri Athletic Club.” I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Tom Albus for spearheading this meaningful tribute. The Powers family was deeply touched by this gesture of friendship and remembrance from our members.
On behalf of the Board of Governors and the leadership team, I wish you and your families a joyful Thanksgiving season filled with good health, gratitude, and great company.
Warm regards,

t has been a joy to see so many members, along with their families and guests, making the most of all the Club has to offer at both the Downtown and West Clubhouses. Whether gathering at the Jack Buck Grille before the big game, competing in league basketball, joining a yoga class, enjoying MACtivities at West, or simply sharing dinner with friends, the energy and connection is palpable. Our team remains dedicated to enhancing your Club experience, and as we approach the holiday season, we’re filled with excitement for what’s to come. Please be sure to preview the Club Calendar and secure your holiday reservations early. We look forward to celebrating with you!
The MAC is hosting its annual luncheon honoring veterans on Nov. 6 ahead of Veterans Day on Nov. 11. All are welcome to attend the event in the Missouri Room. There is also a parade in downtown St. Louis planned for Nov. 8, offering another opportunity to thank those who have served.

Over the past year, significant progress has been made with the West Clubhouse Master Plan. We will continue the next steps in partnership with the firm Peacock + Lewis, in collaboration with the Planning Committee, to refine a phased approach that delivers best-in-class amenities and supports future growth. These ongoing efforts have been continually guided by member feedback, which remains central to the process.
Planning continues for the successful launch of MAC Clayton. Greg Gerber, Director of Operations, joins me in welcoming Chef Bogdan Danila to the MAC team. Chef Bogdan’s culinary passion, combined with his world-class experience, marks the beginning of a new era for the MAC. We are pleased to welcome him, his wife, Chelsea, and their son, Toma, to St. Louis and the MAC family.

Specific to MAC Clayton, preparations are underway for a timely opening. Extensive planning and coordination are taking place behind the scenes, including renovations, décor, staffing, and all details necessary to deliver a first-rate private club experience. All inquiries regarding MAC Clayton membership should be directed to our Membership Manager Morgan Smith at msmith@mac-stl.org or 314-708-5876
To continue highlighting the MAC team, this month I am proud to recognize the members of Saint Louis Parking for their commitment to welcoming members and guests to the Downtown Clubhouse. The collective hospitality shared by Kim, Jeff, and Sandra is a shining example of what makes the MAC such a special place, and we deeply appreciate all that they do — each day and night.

Donald “Chip” Misch, CCM COO/General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Momentum for MAC Clayton continues to grow, with 640 members now officially opted into the amenity offering. As we move forward, focus will shift toward additional membership growth through referrals and outreach to nearby businesses.
As mentioned previously, initial capacity will be intentionally limited to ensure delivery of the elevated experience members have come to expect. It is anticipated that the waitlist threshold will be reached in the near future!
In mid-October, the Club had the pleasure of hosting a special dinner in the Downtown Clubhouse Art Lounge to honor MAC Clayton’s initial Founding Members. This incredible group believed deeply in the vision, offering early and significant financial support as due diligence for the expansion was completed.
The evening featured a creative, multi-course menu from Executive Chef Bart Philipps and the MAC culinary team, with expertly paired wines and live piano music to complement the ambiance. Many thanks to Chip, Greg Gerber, Gena Willis, Chef Bart, Chef Giuliano, and the entire MAC team for creating such a memorable evening - and to the 10 visionary Founding Members who helped transform a bold idea into a tangible reality.
Significant progress continues on several key priorities.
All necessary permits have been received to move forward with construction and planned improvements. Further details about

the design vision will be shared next month. The overall aesthetic blends sophisticated, classic architecture with modern elegance, featuring dark-stained woods, warmly toned metals, tailored upholstery, and ambient lighting. The result is a handsome, inviting environment that feels both established and forward-thinking.
The design team at HOK, has done an exceptional job capturing not just the look, but also the spirit of the Missouri Athletic Club within the iconic space at the Pierre Laclede Center.
The Club is pleased to announce that Chef Bogdan Danila has been selected to lead the culinary program at MAC Clayton. A multi-Michelin-starred chef, Chef Bogdan has worked with worldrenowned culinary leaders such as Alain Ducasse and Gordon Ramsay. He was the first Romanian chef in his country to receive a Michelin star and, most recently, led the culinary program at Broken Sound Club in South Florida. His extensive experience and innovative approach will play a pivotal role in shaping the dining experience MAC Clayton will offer to members and their guests.
Thank you for your continued support and for being part of this exciting new chapter in the Club’s history. The team looks forward to welcoming members in early 2026!

Jodi Petersen, Past President Missouri Athletic Club

As a general rule, anyone 73 years of age or older is required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their tax-deferred accounts (IRAs and 401k) by Dec. 31, 2025, and pay taxes on the distribution.

You can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRAs to your favorite charities and avoid taxation.
The MAC Sports Foundation is a 501(c)(3) entity and is eligible to receive Qualified Charitable Distributions!
Why not decide right now to save taxes this year and help the MAC Sports Foundation or the Charitable Society for Children at the same time?

A QCD is an excellent tax-saving vehicle, but there are rules to be followed and pitfalls to be avoided.

To find out more about Qualified Charitable Distributions and other giving opportunities, please contact:

This summer, more than 500 members took part in the MAC communications survey. The thoughtful feedback provided has helped define how stories will be told and how information will be shared in the year ahead. THE RESULT: content that is more engaging, timely, and reflective of the MAC experience.

The Cherry Diamond will receive a refreshed design and expand from 36 to 48 pages, offering more space for feature stories, timeless content, and expanded event coverage. Beginning in 2026, the publication will move to a bimonthly schedule (Jan./Feb.; March/April; May/ June; July/Aug.; Sept./Oct.; Nov./Dec.) and continue to embody the MAC’s polished, timeless voice — reflective of member pride, lifestyle, and Club enrichment.
Arriving in 2026, the Digital Diamond will debut as a companion online magazine to the Cherry Diamond. Delivered via email on the first of each month when the print edition is not published (Feb., Apr., June, Aug., Oct., Dec.), this new digital publication will extend the MAC storytelling experience between print issues. Members can look forward to realtime updates, convenient registration links, interactive features, and shareable stories - bringing the Club’s news and happenings directly to their inboxes.
Members will have the opportunity to opt in to bimonthly, interest-based emails for tailored updates on Club programs and activities.
Quarterly emails will deliver a printable overview of upcoming events and activities, offering members a convenient snapshot of each season at the Club.
Upcoming improvements include streamlined menu navigation, deep-link integration from newsletters and signage for seamless event registration, and the introduction of a chatbot to assist with common questions.
A redesigned website will make it easier than ever to explore Club offerings. Every page will feature updated visuals and language aligned with the MAC’s refined brand standards.
Expect more short-form videos, interactive polls, and member spotlight features across the MAC’s social channels.
Thanks to the insights shared through the communications survey, the MAC experience continues to grow more connected and dynamic. Download the MAC app, follow the Club on social media, and subscribe to the MAC Connections podcast to stay part of that story.

The Missouri Athletic Club proudly welcomes Kari Foster, CCM/ MBA/MSA, as its new Chief Financial Officer. She joined the MAC in September with 11 years experience in the private club industry. Most recently, she served as CFO of The Briar Club in Houston, Texas. The balance of her private club career was in California, primarily at Long Beach Yacht Club. Kari entered the industry by way of Troon Golf Corporate, as a Regional Controller, where she oversaw financial operations for private clubs with collective revenues exceeding $100 million, mentored Controllers and improved financial reporting. She holds an MBA from Vanderbilt University and a
B.S. in International Business from Fisk University, minoring in French.
Kari’s commitment to service led her to found the Kari Foster Foundation, a nonprofit supporting children of singleparent families pursuing higher education. A proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she embodies values of scholarship, sisterhood, and service.
What drew you to the MAC’s CFO position?
The Club’s size and growth potential were attractive. The MAC does approximately $10MM more revenue than my previous club, and the Clayton amenity adds exciting opportunities. Working with Chip Misch, CCM, and relocating to St. Louis also offered a welcome lifestyle change from Houston traffic!
Top priorities for your first year?
Working with department heads to stay on budget while elevating service. Also,
contributing to a long-range strategic plan and developing financial options for responsible renovations.
Projects you’re especially excited about?
Everything at the MAC excites me! My strengths are in coaching, strategy, and financial management. The Club needs funding for infrastructure and memberfacing renovations. I see opportunities in challenges and am here to find solutions.
What principles guide your financial leadership?
Transparency, integrity, and collaboration. It is vital to understand each department’s needs and to review budgets closely with them. Getting “in front of the invoice” means making informed decisions before expenses occur.
Something surprising about you? I make custom gemstone jewelry.
As members, we all share a passion for the MAC’s community, traditions, and experiences. Our continued success depends on strong leadership, and each year, we look for members to serve on the Board of Governors.
Serving on the Board is a rewarding way to give back and help shape the Club’s future. Whether you’re a long-time member or newly involved, your perspective and energy matter.
Why Consider a Board Position?
F Have a Voice: Influence key decisions.
F Represent Members: Advocate for diverse voices.
F Build Connections: Collaborate with fellow leaders.
F Make an Impact: Use your strengths to enhance the Club experience.
Eligibility Requiremets
F Resident, Junior Resident, Life & Fellow, or Emeritus member
F In good standing, not in arrears
F Three consecutive years of membership
F No leave of absence in 2025
Although having previous MAC committee experience is helpful, it is not required. Just be willing to collaborate, lead, and uphold our Club’s values.
To learn more or express interest, contact me at nperryman@lewisrice.com or Nominating Committee
Vice Chair Jodi Petersen at jlpete30@gmail.com. We’re happy to answer questions and share what the role entails.
Those interested in learning more about the MAC and Board Governance should attend one of the two informational events held in January. More details to come.
For more than 50 years, Joe and Carol Hoffmann have called the Missouri Athletic Club their home away from home. On Sept. 26, the couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary with dinner at the Jack Buck Grille, surrounded by family and friends.
The Hoffmanns’ story began at Mizzou, where they met before marrying in 1959. After serving in the Army, Mr. Hoffmann joined the MAC when he worked in an insurance office located across from the Downtown Clubhouse. Over the decades, he has been deeply involved in Club life, serving on the Board of Governors, singing with the Apollos for more than 40 years, and spending countless mornings swimming on the 5th floor. Carol has been equally active, serving on the board of the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children and contributing her energy to Club events and causes. Together, the couple are enthusiastic members of the Forever Young Club and rarely miss an event.
Now with three generations of Hoffmanns as members, their family connection to the MAC continues to grow. “We are all looking forward to MAC Clayton opening in 2026, the possible expansion at MAC West, and the improvements being made at MAC

Downtown,” said Boyd Hoffmann, the couple's son.
The memories of multi-generational MAC members are being archived to honor the legacies that have shaped the

Club’s rich history. Each story adds to the exceptional community that defines the MAC today. Members are invited to share their stories by contacting Elizabeth Brown at ebrown@mac-stl.org

On Oct. 3, the Downtown Clubhouse was full of joy for the 2025 Women of Distinction Awards, hosted by the MAC Women’s Initiative Group and presented by Mosby Building Arts. Since 2011, the MAC has recognized outstanding women from the St. Louis region who demonstrate remarkable dedication and leadership in their respective careers. This year, Karen Goering, Cynthia Kirkpatrick, Elizabeth Shocklee, Laura Storm, and Rising Star Emily McCartney were celebrated for their impact professionally and within the St. Louis community. Congratulations to this year’s esteemed honorees!

Join the Missouri Athletic Club and the St. Louis Rotary Club for the annual Veterans Day Commemoration event on Nov. 6 at the Downtown Clubhouse. The event will honor all those who have served our country, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Among those recognized at this year’s event are Veteran of the Year Wayne Kaufman, Veteran of Achievement Harry Hegger, and Lifetime Dedication Award recipient Tim Raines.
The featured speaker of this year’s commemoration is Major General (ret.) Antonio “Andy” Munera. Major General Munera retired from the Army after 33 years of dedicated service. His last assignment was the Commander of U.S. Army Cadet Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky, with the responsibility to select, educate, train, and commission college students to be officers and leaders of character in the Total Army and to partner with high schools to conduct JROTC programs. Major General Munera’s expertise includes Leadership Development and Training, Crisis Management and Response, Organizational Culture and Trust Building, and many others.

Blues goalie Jordan Binnington has captured the 2025 Missouri Athletic Club Sports Personality of the Year Award. Binnington, along with other distinguished members of the St. Louis sports community, will be honored at the Jack Buck Sports Awards on Monday, Dec. 8, at the MAC.

Binnington first burst onto the St. Louis sports scene during the 2018-19 season. He was 25 when the Blues finally gave him a chance midway through a season in which the team was struggling. He got his first NHL start on Jan. 7, 2019, and shut out the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0. In his first 20 starts, Binnington went 16-3-1 with a 1.70 goalsagainst average, .933 save percentage, and five shutouts. Not coincidentally, the Blues rose from last place in the NHL standings to earn a playoff berth. He was the NHL's Rookie of the Month in February 2019. Behind Binnington’s strong play, the Blues caught fire down the stretch and carried it through the postseason, leading to the team’s first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history.
In 2025, Binnington remains a Blues’ cornerstone player and is regarded as one of the top goalies in the world. Last spring, he once again keyed a Blues late-season charge to a playoff berth. The netminder posted 28 wins and a goals against average of 2.69. In February, he delivered a clutch performance in net, making several crucial saves, and

leading Canada to the 4 Nations Face Off Championship.
The Sports Personality of the Year Award, established by MAC member Jack Buck in 1970 to annually honor the top St. Louis sports figure, is voted on by members of the Club. Binnington becomes the ninth member of the St. Louis Blues organization to win the award, joining Mike Liut (1981), Brett Hull (1990), Curtis Joseph (1993), Brendan Shanahan (1995), Al MacInnis (1999), TJ Oshie (2014), Vladimir Tarasenko (2016), and Craig Berube (2019).
The Sports Personality of the Year Award has been presented to some of the biggest names in sports history, including Bob Gibson, Joe Torre, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Jimmy Connors, Marshall Faulk, Albert Pujols, and Kurt Warner.
Other honorees at this year's banquet will include Cardinals’ broadcaster John Rooney, who will be honored with the Jack Buck Award, and the SLU basketball broadcasting duo Bob Ramsey and Early Austin will receive the Burnes/Broeg Award.

Check MAC social media for more honorees to be announced.
Tom Ackerman will serve as master of ceremonies, and the banquet will air on KMOX Radio. Every banquet since its inception has aired live on KMOX.
The banquet continues to thrive as more awards have been added to the program, allowing St. Louis sports fans to hear even more great stories. Awards presented over the years include the Bob Plager Legends Award, Carl O. Bauer Award, Jim Ryan Memorial Trophy, David Freese Hometown Hero Award, and Stan “The Man” Award, among others.

The Book Club concludes its 2025 season on Nov. 13, as Jane Molden guides the Book Club through “Lucky” by Jane Smiley.
Before Jodie Rattler became a star, she was a girl growing up in St. Louis. One day in 1955, when she was just six years old, her uncle Drew took her to the racetrack, where she got lucky— and the roll of two-dollar bills she won has never since left her side. Jodie thrived in the warmth of her extended family, and then—through a combination of hard work and serendipity— she started a singing career, which catapulted her from St. Louis to New York City, from the English countryside to the tropical beaches of St. Thomas, from Cleveland to Los Angeles and back again.
Jodie comes of age in recording studios, backstage, and on tour, and tries to hold her own in the wake of Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, and Joni Mitchell. Yet it feels as if something is missing. Could it be true love? Or is she looking for what she already has? Rich with the atmosphere of a rapidly changing cultural landscape, shot through with longing and exuberance, romance and rock ’n’ roll, “Lucky” is a story of chance and grit and the glitter of real talent, a colorful portrait of one woman’s journey in search of herself. Join the Book Club as they explore the questions raised by this novel.

Magic is in the air, and a touch of fairy dust, too, as the Downtown Clubhouse lobby prepares to house this year’s enchanting gingerbread display. What began back in April as a sweet vision is now coming to life, thanks to Executive Pastry Chef Katie Acker and her imaginative team.
This year’s theme – gnomes, fairies, and nature – brings a sprinkle of woodland wonder to the holiday season. From fondant mushrooms to tiny chocolate creatures and a gingerbread castle that looks almost real, every detail invites members to step into a storybook forest. Admirers are encouraged to look closely for hidden surprises, as curious gnomes and mischievous fairies may be tucked away among the scenery.
The team eagerly anticipates sharing the magic as the display begins assembly on Nov. 26. Members and guests are invited to visit the Downtown Clubhouse throughout the holiday season and experience this whimsical world of gingerbread delight.

Brian Hardesty, a seasoned hospitality professional with more than 30 years of experience, joined the Missouri Athletic Club in September as the executive chef at the West Clubhouse. He began his culinary career in some of St. Louis’ top restaurants and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Executive Chef at Terrene in the Central West End.
Over the past decade, Hardesty has co-owned and operated Guerrilla Street Food while also running his consulting business, Maven Bureau, since 2012.
His diverse background includes creating a wide range of concepts, from fine dining to fast-casual and entertainment venues.
Get the inside scoop from Chef Hardesty on his food philosophy, upcoming menu updates, and what he's most excited about at MAC West.
What drew you to the executive chef position at MAC West?
The opportunity to lead the kitchen at the West C;ubhouse has been on my radar for quite some time. I jumped at the chance when the position opened up.
What changes to the MAC West menus can members expect from you as executive chef?
Members can expect a revamp of current offerings in the Stan Musial Grille for both lunch and dinner. I see that space as a more casual spot to enjoy a mix of classics and modern takes on deli sandwiches, comfort food, and approachable ingredients. For the 1903 Dining Room, I am reconceptualizing that menu into a more focused theme for dinner service. The menu will be heavily influenced by New England. It will feature regional specialties, as well as local, seasonal ingredients treated with care and simplicity.
When will these changes take place?
We will begin these changes toward the middle of November. Until then, come in and try our dinner specials to see where we are taking these concepts!
How would you describe the kind of cuisine you like to prepare?
I most admire seasonality and how seasonal ingredients go together harmoniously. When that happens, and you don't overdo things with too many components, the food sings. That approach is always my goal, regardless of the style I'm preparing.
Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
I have been married to my wife for eight years, and we have three children. I love spending time with my family, and they are all very proud to know I am a part of this team.

Did you know that you may not need a prescription for physical therapy?
It’s called direct access, and it empowers you to be your own health care advocate. You may be able to be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a physician’s prescription.*
This means you can start treatment more quickly to restore your strength, regain your skills and reduce any pain. Depending upon the diagnosis, your therapist at SSM Health Physical Therapy may recommend that you follow up with a physician or other licensed health care professional before beginning your treatment.
Getting therapy first may help you:
• Save time
• Save money
• Expedite treatment
• Avoid opioids
• Prevent surgery
If your physician does prescribe physical therapy, you are not obligated to receive physical therapy in any specific facility. You have the right to choose where you want to go.
When choosing the right physical therapy provider, SSM Health Physical Therapy offers:
• Therapists who are licensed by the state and many hold advanced certifications.
• Participation with most insurance plans, which may help to minimize any out-ofpocket expenses.
• Submission of claims to your insurance company and help estimating any personal financial responsibilities.
• Examples of comments our patients provided so that you may learn more about their experiences with our care.
• Accreditation by the Joint Commission, which ensures the highest level of quality and patient safety.
Remember:
* Some limitations may apply. Certain insurance plans or diagnoses may still require a prescription. Call today for more information.

You are the most important member of your health care team and are free to choose the rehabilitation provider that can best help you meet your goals. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT: SSM Health Physical Therapy - MAC West Clubhouse Call 314.822.3205 or stop by the clinic for assistance scheduling. The U.S. Navy was founded on 13 Oct 1775, with the Department of the Navy established in 1798. The Navy’s mission is to “maintain, train and equip combat-ready naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas,” and it does so with warfare specialties that include aviation, surface warfare, nuclear submarines, special forces and support services. There are approximately 341,000 sailors serving actively in the U.S. Navy today with an additional 59,000 reserve personnel.

USS Missouri is the seventh Virginia-class submarine and the fourth U.S. Navy ship to be named for the state of Missouri. It is 377 feet long with a beam of 34 feet. Virginia-class, fast-attack submarines have a crew of approximately 132, made up of 15 o cers and 117 enlisted Sailors. Fast-attack Submarines like Missouri are multi-mission platforms enabling five of the six Navy maritime strategy core-capabilities – sea control, power projection, forward presence, maritime security, and deterrence. The submarine is designed to excel in anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare; strike warfare; special operations; intelligence; surveillance and reconnaissance; irregular warfare and mine warfare – from open ocean anti-submarine warfare to intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, to projecting power ashore with special operation forces and Tomahawk cruise missiles in the prevention or preparation of regional crises.
