ELECTION RESULTS

Keep up with what is happening on Election Night!

Once the polls close and the ballot counting starts, the M.D. will be posting updates every half hour on our social channels.

Please note, polls close at 8 p.m.

In previous years, unofficial results were available within an hour of the polls closing. However, the Province of Alberta removed the option for automatic tabulation machines in this municipal election. That means all votes must be counted by hand, which will delay the release of the completed unofficial results.

SPECIAL BALLOTS

*Please note — due to the ongoing Canada Post labour disruption, there are some changes to how Special Ballots can be issued and received. Read on for details.

Special Ballots are available to those whose name is contained in the Permanent Electors Register (PER), who are unable to vote at the Advance Vote dates or a voting station on Election Day. Not on the PER? That’s ok — you can still request a Special Ballot, but must fill out Form 13 in person, producing the required ID with Form 22.

Applications for Special Ballot packages opened September 2, 2025 with packages becoming available in early October.

The elector choosing to vote by Special Ballot must make the request. The request cannot be made by another individual on the elector’s behalf.

The Special Ballot package can be sent by a commercial courier to the elector, or the Returning Officer will hold it for pick-up by the elector upon request. The M.D. will cover the cost of sending the Special Ballot package. It is the responsibility of the elector to ensure they can receive packages directly from a courier at their address.

An elector may also have the package picked up by a friend, or family member, provided they notify the Returning Officer. The Returning Officer will not release the Special Ballot package to someone not expressly authorized to pick it up by the elector.

The person picking up the Special Ballot package will be asked by the Returning Officer to provide identification.

If sent by courier, and the elector does not receive their Special Ballot package within one week, please follow-up with the Returning Officer.

If the elector makes the request in person at the Returning Officer’s office, after October 6, 2025, the Special Ballot may be completed at the same time.

How do I receive a Special Ballot?

You can request a Special Ballot by completing the Request for Special Ballot Package Form (Form 22) and submitting it to the Returning Officer:

In person (M.D. of Bonnyville No. 87 Administration Building, 4905 – 50 Ave., Bonnyville, AB)

By courier (M.D. of Bonnyville No. 87, 4905 – 50 Ave., Bonnyville AB, T9N 2J7)

By fax (780-826-4524)

The form can be filled out online and either emailed or printed, or printed as a blank form and filled out by hand.

A Special Ballot package can also be requested by phone (780-826-3171), but only if the elector is on the Permanent Electors Register.

Completing and returning the Special Ballot package:

1. Step-by-step instructions to complete the Special Ballot process and how to seal your vote properly are included in the Special Ballot package. The elector must complete and sign Part 1 of the Special Ballot Certificate Envelope and must provide a copy of authorized identification and properly seal the Special Ballot package for return.

2. It is up to the elector to return the completed Special Ballot package to the Returning Officer before the deadline, which is 4:30 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025 (Election Day). The elector may return the package by courier, or by any other means. If returning by courier, the cost will be borne by the elector. It is also the responsibility of the elector to ensure the package is received by the Returning Officer on or before the deadline.

3. The Special Ballot package cannot be sent to the elector, nor returned to the Returning Officer, by facsimile or other electronic means.

Special Ballot packages that are incorrect or incomplete, or received AFTER 4:30 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025 (Election Day), will NOT be counted as per Bylaw No. 1881 Election Bylaw and Section 77.3 of the Local Authorities Election Act.

The Returning Officer is not responsible for the collection of completed Special Ballot packages.

Questions?

Any questions regarding Special Ballots or the municipal election can be directed to the Returning Officer.

HOW TO VOTE

Voter information

You are eligible to vote if you are: At least 18 years of age, a Canadian citizen, your place of permanent residence is in the M.D. of Bonnyville, within the ward in which you are voting for, on Election Day, October 20, 2025, and are capable of meeting the ID requirements.

All voters that are not on the Permanent Electors Register (PER) will be required to complete a Statement of Elector Eligibility (Form 13) at the Voting Station. You can find a full list of acceptable ID forms at elections.ab.ca/voters/id-required-to-vote

There are two scenarios that will determine what ID you need to vote:

1. On the PER

Voters are required to show valid government-issued identification containing, at minimum, the voter’s photograph and name. For example:

Alberta Driver’s Licence

Alberta Identification Card

• Certificate of Indian Status Card

• First Nation Membership Card

• Métis Nation of Alberta Citizenship Card

• Métis Settlement Membership Card

• Firearm Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL)

Alberta Service Dog ID Card

Canadian Passport

• Canadian Citizenship Card

• CANPASS, FAST, or Nexus Card

• CATSA Identification Card

• Canadian Forces ID Card

• Veterans Health Care ID Card

2. NOT on the PER

• Voters will be required to complete a Statement of Elector Eligibility (Form 13) at the Voting Station on Election Day, to be eligible to vote. Show valid government-issued identification containing the voter’s photograph, name, and current address. It is recommended to use one of the following common types of identification:

→ Alberta Driver’s Licence

→ Alberta Identification Card

If you do not have Photo ID that validates your name and current address:

If you are a non-registered voter unable to produce government-issued photo identification that validates your name and current address or your address has recently changed, you’ll be required to provide one piece of valid ID with your name and current address. Some of the more common types of identification from this list include:

• Insurance document

• Bank statement

Mortgage statement

• Residential lease Vehicle ownership/registration Pension plan benefit statement

• Tax assessment Income tax assessment Utility bill

If a voter’s identification shows a post office box number as the address instead of a residential or legal address, it can be accepted as verification of current address if it is within reasonable distance to the voting jurisdiction.

The identification produced should have the voter’s name and address — documentation in a spouse or family member’s name cannot be accepted.

Those unable to produce appropriate identification may have a registered voter vouch for their place of residence only.

Vouching

NEW in 2025 — The province has introduced a significant change to the rules surrounding vouching. An individual vouching is now only allowed to validate another person’s address and not their identity. Due to this change, all voters require valid identification to vote.

If you are a non-registered voter unable to produce identification with your address, you may have a registered voter vouch for you.

An individual can have another voter vouch for them if:

• The individual requesting shows valid identification.

• The individual requesting submits a statement by filling out a form provided by the Election Officer at a Voting Station.

• The individual requesting is accompanied by another voter who can validate their current address.

→ This voter who is validating an address needs to be registered and listed on the Permanent Electors Register.

→ The voter who is validating may vouch for more than one person ONLY if every person they vouch for shares the same current address.

→ A scrutineer shall not vouch for any person.

WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE

Voting in municipal elections is important for a few reasons.

• Municipal government is the closest government to the voter. You interact with the municipal government every day — whether it’s driving on roads, pouring yourself a glass of water (if you live in Fort Kent or Ardmore), or using an M.D. bin site to dispose of household waste and recycling, municipal programs affect you and your family every day.

• You are exercising your democratic right. You are performing a service to your community. You are showing you’re engaged with and invested in your community.

• It’s a chance to have your say and help shape the future of the M.D. of Bonnyville.

The Municipal District of Bonnyville is accepting applications for Presiding Deputy and Deputy Returning Officers (Poll Clerks) for the 2025 Municipal Election. All Deputy Returning Officers will be required to attend a half-day training session in early October and will be expected to attend a specific polling station from 8:30 a.m. to completion of Ballot Counting on Election Day, October 20, 2025.

Qualifications for these positions are as follows:

• Must be 18 years or older and eligible to work in Canada

• Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills

• Must be able to read maps and understand rural addressing

• Must be tactful and exercise good judgement

• Must be professional, polite, and reliable

• Must maintain and aid in maintaining the absolute secrecy of the vote Questions? Contact our Returning Officer by email at sseverin@md.bonnyville.ab.ca or by 780-826-3171, ext. 2062.
