WELCOME TO THE LAKE LIFE

From gritty mud to gleaming chrome, we have every kind of event for petrol heads, (Page 23). We update our event calendar at bit.ly/MDBvilleEventCalendar regularly. You can find more events and up-to-date information every week.

Prefer a slower day steeped in local lore? Take in one of our museums — Bonnyville & District Museum (Page 62) or Cold Lake Museums (Page 63) and learn about our region’s history from our Indigenous and pioneer roots to the impact of the oil and gas industry and Canadian Armed Forces.

Aviation buff? Touch down in July when CFB Cold Lake hosts its biannual Cold Lake Air Show (Page 64). It’s a jaw dropping display of air power!

If “learning to ski” or “conquering a 60-foot-tall obstacle course” is on your bucket list, make tracks to Kinosoo Ridge Resort (Page 74). Summer or winter, there’s an adventure waiting for you!

Whether you’re relaxing lakeside with your latest beach read, exploring the region on an ATV, hooking your next big fish, or spinning tales around a campfire, we invite you to come spend a weekend, a week, or your whole summer in the M.D. of Bonnyville.

WHEELING AROUND

Pelican Point M.D. Park

IRON HORSE TRAIL

The 300-kilometre multi-use Iron Horse Trail connects many of the area’s natural attractions. The Beaver River Trestle, located southwest of Cold Lake, is one kilometre long and 60 metres high and is one of the highlights of the trail. A paved parking lot and trail head to the trestle makes it accessible for everyone. To get there, turn north at the Y Road off Highway 28.

Riders can use the Iron Horse Trail to access countless kilometres of backcountry trails and cutlines that weave through the region’s more rugged terrain. Looking to explore the entire region? Hook up with the Iron Horse Trail at one of the various entry points. The Iron Horse Trail branches in three directions from Mile Zero at Abilene Junction. To the northeast is Glendon and Bonnyville, to the west is Smoky Lake and Waskatenau, and to the southeast lies St. Paul, Elk Point, and Heinsburg.

Visit travellakeland.ca for more information.

MAY LAKE TRAIL

There are well-used trails located north of Crane Lake and the May Lake Trail northwest of Cold Lake. Cutline trails can be found around Wolf Lake that join up to the trails in Lakeland Provincial Park.

PELICAN POINT

M.D. PARK

Pelican Point M.D. Park on Moose Lake welcomes ATV/OHV riders. The trails in the park allow users to access the sand and gravel trails outside of the gates and the Iron Horse Trail, located east of the campground.

Campground trail maps, rules, and regulations are posted at md.bonnyville.ab.ca.

HIKE, BIKE, WALK

From flat, paved trails to challenging terrain through nature, our regional biking, hiking, and walking trails offer a variety of experiences and views.

Take the tunnel that runs under Highway 28 to Jessie Lake and the Wetlands Trail in the Town of Bonnyville. Explore the Moose Lake area by taking the North Shore Heights Trail. This section goes north to the intersection with the multi-use Iron Horse Trail, ending at Hwy. 660.

ARDMORE POND TRAIL

Tucked behind the outdoor rink in the charming Hamlet of Ardmore, the Ardmore Pond Trail is a 700-metre loop. The pond makes it an excellent bird watching area. There is a bench to rest on, and the surrounding area makes a great picnic spot.

COLD LAKE BIKE PARK & TRAILS

The Cold Lake Bike Park & Trails, located near Radar Hill at the Cold Lake Museums, has year-round, multi-user (non-motorized), single-track, mountain bike trails for all skill levels. This free park also features a pump track, jump features, and more. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for trail conditions and event information.

COLD LAKE

M.D. PARK

This all-purpose trail running through Cold Lake M.D. Park is just under a kilometre long and is great for biking and light hiking. Check out one of the two playgrounds, dip your toes in the lake at the day use area, and explore all the park has to offer.

COLD LAKE

PROVINCIAL PARK

If you want to end your hike or bike trek with a dip in the lake, Cold Lake Provincial Park offers three trails for hiking and mountain biking. The Campground Trail is quite hilly with some sharp corners. Taking the Lakeshore Trail? Bring a snack and enjoy a rest on one of the picnic tables or benches along the path. Main Road Trail parallels the main park road. The public beach area is one of best spots to access the water.

In the winter, bring your cross-country skis or snowshoes for a whole new experience. See Page 81 for more winter trail adventures.

BONNYVILLE & DISTRICT MUSEUM

bonnyvillemuseum.ca

Dive into the history of the Bonnyville region while browsing through thousands of artifacts at the Bonnyville & District Museum.

Become a time traveller and take a step back in time by visiting one of the 14 onsite historical buildings. Several are original structures moved to the three-acre property. You’ll find two churches, the historic St. Anne’s Chapel, the Durlingville School House, an expansive hospital exhibit, the 1920s Vallee General Store, two quaint homesteader cabins, and replicas of a fire house and Angus Shaw’s 1789 North West Company post. The museum houses a vast array of agricultural and industrial artifacts — some of which are housed in the blacksmith shop, early automotive garage, and restored tractor shed.

A visit to the Bonnyville & District Museum isn’t complete without seeing the stunning collection of folk-art miniatures, made between 1930 and 1950 by local artisan Clementine Poitras. You’ll also find the Aurora Visual Arts Association’s Gallery for some modern works of art.

Visit the museum’s website or Facebook page for hours, rates, and details. Admission fees range depending on age. Donations are gratefully accepted.

COLD LAKE MUSEUMS

coldlakemuseums.org 780-594-3546

The beauty, vastness, and abundant resources of the Cold Lake region has drawn a variety of people and businesses for years. The Cold Lake Museums tell the stories of their adventures.

Come enjoy the beautiful picnic area with an amazing view, surrounded by an air park containing several aircraft. Take a walk through the radome, a smaller version of the original three radomes that once graced the former 42 Radar Squadron site.

There are four museums in a single facility to explore — the Cold Lake Air Force Museum, the Oil & Gas Museum, the Heritage Museum, and the Indigenous Museum.

Located at 3699-69 Ave. Cold Lake

The Cold Lake Air Force Museum paints a picture of 4 Wing and its squadrons and units from 1954 to present.

The Oil & Gas Museum digs into the unique technology developed specifically for the Cold Lake Oil Sands through interactive exhibits.

Using artifacts, the Heritage Museum illustrates the storyline of the first Europeans arriving in Cold Lake at the end of the 19th Century. Cold Lake was a land of farmers, fishermen, fur trappers, and loggers who came west for new opportunities. The Heritage Museum depicts their stories in various vignettes.

In the Indigenous Museum, you can learn about the history of the Nêhiyaw (Cree), Michif Piyii (Métis), and Denesųłiné peoples living on the shores of Cold Lake.
