Luther College Report to the Community 2024-25

Page 1

A message from the PRESIDENT

A key element of my role as Interim President was to ensure a smooth runway for the next President of Luther College. As you will know by now, that new President is Dr. Tom Phenix, who assumed the role on July 1, 2025.

As Interim President, I came to appreciate both the fragility and the enduring strength of Luther College. While academic excellence remains a cornerstone, our mission goes beyond education: “preparing students to be compassionate, creative, and critical thinkers through academic excellence and a community of care rooted in a call to love and serve our neighbours.” We strive not only to teach but to truly make a difference in the lives of our students and in society.

However noble and worthy this mission is, we continue to navigate challenges. Across Canada and beyond, institutions such as Luther College face challenges like rising costs that outstrip government funding, donors and supporters stretched by uncertainty, and a regulatory and global geopolitical environment that restricts international student recruitment. This year we as leadership team engaged in a wide variety of analyses and debates concerning several important administrative and academic processes, sometimes asking previously unaskable questions as a necessary step in times of change.

Luther College is first and foremost

an academic institution with two strong and capable academic leaders. Dr. Derrek Eberts, the new Academic Dean, had a most successful year, learning quickly the complex demands of academic leadership in a collegium. At the High School, Nora Marpole spent most of the year capably serving as Interim Principal. After a comprehensive search she was recommended for a five-year term as Principal that she, thankfully, accepted. My closest work in overseeing the direction of both campuses was with a team called the College Leadership Group. Just as the faculty and staff at each campus serve our students, this leadership team provides support in every arena of activity across both campuses. I am grateful for the advice and support they provided to me this year.

At the High School, our faculty continue to go above and beyond, contributing to numerous committees and extracurriculars. The El Salvador Mission Trip remains a transformative experience for many. A new highlight this year was the introduction of Professional Development Awards, thanks to donor and alumni Soren Oberg.

Other donors provided up to $186,000 in additional bursary support so that students who need it can afford to attend and receive a Luther education.

At the University, we continue to

lead in community engagement and academic excellence.

Dr. Kaila Bruer was named a U of R President’s Teaching and Learning Scholar. Our faculty are active in diverse research areas, and our Elder-in-Residence, Dr. Elder Lorna Standingready, continues to inspire and guide us through the mâmawi-itohtêwak committee.

I must thank Luther’s Board of Regents composed of 15 dedicated volunteers (many of whom are alumni), who give of their time, energy and resources to serve the remarkable people that are Luther College and who serve to help students transform the world to be more grace-filled, joyful and just, as our Vision inspires us to do.

It indeed takes a dedicated community to bring Luther to life. You will learn much more about the year’s accomplishments in this Report to the Community.

In closing, I am grateful to places like Luther College. Without the transmission and enhancement of humanity’s accumulated knowledge, traditions, experience and collective intelligence, we cannot survive.

- Dr. Murray Knuttila

A message from the CHAIRPERSON

The foremost priority for the Board of Regents in 2024-25 was the successful search for a new President. Dr. Tom Phenix, who was appointed in February, brings a passion for education, is an experienced administrator and leader, and has boundless enthusiasm for Luther College. I extend gratitude to the Presidential Search Committee, whose dedicated efforts have set a strong foundation for Luther’s continued growth and excellence.

Recognizing the importance of our connection to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC), this year we reaffirmed our commitment to our identity as an ELCIC-based institution. Dialogue with the National Bishop and a focused retreat discussing “How Lutheran is Luther?” allowed us to explore and strengthen our historical and present relationship with the ELCIC, ensuring that our values remain central to our mission.

Luther College initiated a comprehensive review of the land surrounding Luther College High School to explore how it might be better utilized in support of our mission. To

guide this process, we engaged Colliers to conduct research and facilitate consultations with our stakeholders. Their insights will help us evaluate potential opportunities and make informed decisions about the future of this valuable asset. More updates will be shared as this important work progresses.

Another significant achievement was the completion of our revised Board Operating Guidelines. This document clarifies our governance practices and outlines how the Board relates to and directs the College. With the overhaul complete, we will now focus on ongoing review and improvement to ensure our governance remains robust and adaptive.

We mourned the loss of two former Presidents in 2025. Dr. Morris Anderson and Dr. Bryan Hillis dedicated their working lives to Luther and made deep and lasting contributions–each in their own way. We honour their contributions and memory with deep gratitude.

I would like to recognize the exceptional commitment of Luther’s faculty and staff, whose dedication to our students and

community is truly inspiring. Special thanks go to Dr. Murray Knuttila, who exemplified what it means to be called when he stepped into the role of Interim President for the year. He provided stability, guidance, compassionate care, and set Luther up to take on the challenges and opportunities of the future.

To my colleagues on the Board of Regents, thank you for your hard work, passion, and steadfast commitment. The collaborative spirit and shared purpose of this group continue to enrich Luther.

And finally, thank you to Luther’s members, alumni and donors. You help to sustain Luther through your prayers, your presence and your gifts. Together with you, Luther College makes transformative change for a more grace-filled, just and joyful world.

Financial results for both campuses are combined in the charts below to match our audited financial statements. The College prepares a separate budget for each campus and shares certain administrative expenses for operational efficiency. Luther College High School’s operations continued to be impacted by the number of international students, which was well below the pre-pandemic enrolment. Expenses at the University were $1.1 million higher than usual due to a new collective bargaining agreement negotiated with the faculty. As faculty had been without a contract since 2021, retroactive wages were significant and were funded with a one-time transfer from reserves.
