WELCOME TO OUR 2018/19 SEASON
Welcome to our new season of concerts at Brighton Dome. We look forward to sharing with you some of the world’s best-loved classical music. Opening the season on 20 October with Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, we are delighted to welcome conductor Alondra de la Parra, who will also be joined by British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. On 24 November we perform two British masterpieces, Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and The Lark Ascending as part of a programme which also features Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, performed by Carolin Widmann.
Lovers of the violin are in for a second treat on 12 January as Alexander Sitkovetsky joins the Orchestra for Brahms’s Violin Concerto alongside Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), under the baton of British conductor Jamie Phillips. We round off our season on 7 April when we are joined by the incomparable Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä for a programme of music including Bax’s Tintagel and Sibelius’s great Fifth Symphony. Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki plays Grieg’s Piano Concerto in a minor. In anticipation that there is something here for everyone we look forward to welcoming you to Brighton Dome this year to experience the wonder of live music.

Alondra de la Parra conductor Benjamin Grosvenor piano There’s a good reason why Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto is one of the world’s favourite classics (and we’re not just talking about Brief Encounter). Like any true classic, it always sounds new – and in the hands of a pianist as insightful and as skilled as the young British superstar Benjamin Grosvenor it’ll never have sounded grander. Conductor Alondra de la Parra will bring her signature verve to an all-Russian programme that begins with Glinka’s firecracker of an overture, and ends in the triumph of Tchaikovsky’s unashamedly autobiographical Fifth Symphony: music that the composer wanted to be played “with passion and desire”.

Graham Ross conductor Carolin Widmann violin And relax…when Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote his Tallis Fantasia, he imagined a great cathedral beginning to echo and resound with the voices of centuries. The Lark Ascending, meanwhile, soars high above an idyllic English landscape. This is music that speaks to both heart and soul, and it’s no wonder both pieces are so widely loved. So as a contrast, the young British conductor Graham Ross has chosen two masterpieces that simply crackle with energy: Beethoven’s roller-coaster ride of a Fourth Symphony, and Mendelssohn’s glittering, gloriously tuneful Violin Concerto, played tonight by the superb Carolin Widmann, a soloist for whom every performance is an adventure.

It’s all about the emotion. Beethoven takes a drama of ancient Rome and turns it into a tense musical thriller. Brahms relaxes in the sunshine of the Alps, and lets his happiness pour out in one of the sweetest and most songful of all violin concertos, played tonight by Alexander Sitkovetsky. As for Dvořák, well, he might have written his Ninth Symphony in the ‘New World’, but his heart was in Bohemia. If you only know the famous Largo, you’re in for a wonderful surprise, as he pours all his nostalgia and inspiration into a symphony that never gets any less stirring.

High above the Atlantic breakers, the clifftop castle of Tintagel is the stuff of legend, and when Arnold Bax saw it he let his imagination soar. Tonight’s concert begins with some of the most passionately romantic music ever written by a British composer and ends with Jean Sibelius gazing at a flight of swans in the sunset: the inspiration for his Fifth Symphony, and one of the simplest – but greatest – melodies ever written for orchestra. Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä is simply unequalled in Sibelius, and the young Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki has something marvellously fresh to say about Grieg’s much-loved concerto, too.
