Introduction

A warm welcome to our new season

As we approach Beethoven’s 250th anniversary, we present two concerts dedicated to his ground-breaking music. Opening our season on 21 September, Kensho Watanabe makes his debut with the Orchestra conducting the sweeping Seventh Symphony, and violinist Emmanuel Tjeknavorian performs Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. On 2 November conductor and film music specialist Anthony Weeden leads the Orchestra in a celebration of British cinema featuring iconic pieces from a century of unforgettable films, from Lawrence of Arabia and Brief Encounter to Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Star cellist Leonard Elschenbroich joins us on 15 February to perform Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. Conducted by Joshua Weilerstein and coupled with Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2, this promises to be a concert to remember. Matthew Coorey conducts the final concert of our season on 18 April. We return to Beethoven, with the much-loved ‘Pastoral’ Sixth Symphony, and the incomparable pianist Joanna MacGregor performs the poetic Fourth Piano Concerto. ‘I am the new Bacchus, pressing out glorious wine for the human spirit’: Ludwig van Beethoven never sold himself short, but until you’ve heard his Seventh Symphony in full heart-pounding flight, you’ve never known just how intoxicating music can be. It’s the only possible way to crown a whole concert devoted to Beethoven’s multi-faceted genius; first, though, comes the mighty Leonore Overture – a soul-stirring cry for freedom – and the radiant serenity of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, played by Emmanuel Tjeknavorian. Film music maestro Anthony Weeden introduces a century of great British film scores. The elegance of Murder on the Orient Express, the visionary pre-war sci-fi of Things to Come; the sheer emotion of the Love theme from Romeo and Juliet: these are the soundtracks of all our lives: and you’ll never hear them played with more energy or flair.

Some listeners think of it as a mighty river of sound; others as the song of a great nation awakening to freedom. But however you hear it, there are few experiences in classical music more invigorating than Sibelius’s Second Symphony, a musical journey that begins amidst the sounds of nature and ends in a surge of triumph. It’s an inspirational climax to an evening that opens with Dvořák’s Cello Concerto – a sweeping, bittersweet song of love and loss from the New World, played tonight by Leonard Elschenbroich, a cellist who’s been praised for his ‘gripping and impassioned’ performances.

When Beethoven wanted to relax, he headed for the countryside, and there’s still no happier, fresher or more gloriously tuneful celebration of nature’s wonders than his lovely ‘Pastoral’ Symphony. But there’s more to it than just folkdances and birdsong: this is music to soothe the soul. The Fidelio Overture, meanwhile, stirs the blood – and Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto shows this most universal of all composers at his most tender and profound. The great British pianist Joanna MacGregor finds something new in everything she plays; together with conductor Matthew Coorey she’ll get straight to the heart of this very special Beethoven anniversary celebration.

Access

Brighton Dome is committed to making your visit easy and enjoyable. Where possible, we operate family friendly and accessible venues but may ask customers who cause unreasonable disturbance during events to leave the auditoria. Concessionary priced tickets, where available, are offered to registered disabled people, and where possible a range of prices is available for disabled customers. You can take advantage of a special £6.50 evening rate at the RCP North Road on North Road for parking from 5pm – midnight. RCP North Road Car Park is a 4 minute walk from Brighton Dome. Brighton Dome and Festival Members can save 30% on standard parking charges at any time when coming to events – simply collect a follow-on car park ticket at the venue after the performance. (This does not apply to parking that is pre-booked online.) NB Car park charges correct at time of going to press.

There is a Sennheiser radio frequency system in the Concert Hall, which can be used with or without a hearing aid. Please collect the unit and a headset from the Ticket Office upon arrival at the venue. Please allow 15 minutes before the start of the performance to pick up your headset, and note that a £20 returnable cash deposit will be required.

Brighton Dome is situated on Church Street in the heart of historic Brighton, on the Royal Pavilion Estate. It comprises three spaces – the Concert Hall, Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre.
