IN-CHIEF
VETERANS HAVE ALWAYS HELD A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART. As the spouse of an Army veteran, I’ve witnessed firsthand the discipline, sacrifice, and quiet dedication required to serve. I’ve heard stories of the missed milestones, long hours, and the weight of responsibility they carry. But I’ve also seen the pride, strength, and bond that comes with serving something greater than oneself.
And to the spouses of veterans: thank you. Your service—though quieter— is just as powerful. You hold down the fort at home, raise children solo during deployments, and offer unwavering support through every move and mission. You are the foundation that holds it all together.
Too often, when we picture a veteran, we picture a man. This year—and last—we wanted to shift that image and celebrate the incredible women of our military. Their sacrifices, courage, and time away from family deserve to be recognized and honored.
Last year, we gathered four women veterans for a photo shoot. Strangers at first, they left with a group chat and a new sisterhood. This year, we’re proud to do it again—featuring four more remarkable women who embody the strength, beauty, and resilience of those who serve.
Whether on the frontlines or supporting from home, their stories remind us that service takes many forms. This month, we honor every woman who wears the uniform—and those who stand beside them.

Reimagining Care.
Restoring Trust. Transforming Medicine,
ONE STORY AT A TIME
MEET ONE HEALTH OB/GYN, Dr. Brandi Adams
JULY 1, 2025 — This marks the day that I performed the first surgery at the new Atrium Health Lake Norman Hospital. Grateful. That’s the only word that comes to mind. Grateful for my patients who have trusted me with their care. Grateful for the amazing partnership with Advocate Health to bring a muchneeded state-of-the-art facility to the community. Grateful for my fellow One Health colleagues and the journey that we started on six years ago to disrupt healthcare and positively bring about change.
I moved from New York City over 10 years ago to join this group of providers now known as One Health OB/GYN. From the moment of my first visit, I knew this group was special. Their passion for providing excellent care and putting patients first was palpable. Their level of compassion and respect for each other spoke volumes to me as a new physician. Their desire to be innovators and never accepting the status quo was energizing. This was where I was meant to be. The physicians within One Health welcomed me with open arms, and I’m happy to say that this is now home. I have since helped build a growing OB/GYN practice and developed lifelong relationships. My partners have even helped me grow my own family by delivering my two children!
So what is One Health? This is a common question that we all get asked. On a very simple level, we are a group of independent primary care providers who have partnered with Advocate Health with the goal of trying to transform healthcare. On a more detailed level, we are trying to improve the patient experience, improve the health of our communities, and reduce medical costs with a focus on caring for ALL. This means caring for our patients, our staff, and our providers because everyone’s health and wellness is vital to the success of the healthcare system. In keeping with this mission, you will find some services within our offices that are exclusive to One Health clinics. Some examples include a maternal virtual nutrition program, a mental health program with the ability for direct scheduling, and an embedded lifestyle medicine program to meet health needs
outside of traditional medicine. We are constantly thinking of ways to meet the needs of our fast-growing community.
Speaking of a fast-growing community, we are thrilled to be able to say that we welcomed 100 new beautiful babies within the first month of Atrium Health Lake Norman Hospital opening! One Health OB/GYN is currently the only group providing obstetric services at the new hospital. Over the past two years, we have also grown OB/GYN services for Lincoln county at Atrium Health Lincolnton. As of October 1st, we have also started to provide obstetric services at Atrium Health University Hospital. All of our One Health patients have the option to deliver at any of those three hospitals with our amazing teams.
If you had asked me 10 years ago what life would be like in 2025, I would have never imagined being a physician mom performing the first surgery at a landmark
Brandi Adams, MD, FACOG One Health OB/GYN
hospital while breast pumping in between cases! But that’s what happens when passion meets commitment and a lot of support! I can’t wait to see what the next 10 years with my One Health family will bring.

WOMEN WHO SERVE
In every generation, women have stepped forward with steadfast hearts to defend our nation. In this special edition, Katie Stankiewicz, CEO of Willow Equine and Executive Director of Soul to Sole Connection, introduces us to some local sheroes whose service and sacrifice continue to safeguard our freedoms and inspire future generations.
ErikaFor Erika Bienlien, 9/11 shaped her path. Her father was at the Pentagon that day, and the uncertainty of his return left a lasting impression. Determined to defend her country, she later joined the Army, serving eight years through wartime and during the Afghanistan withdrawal. She was part of the Homeland Defense Mission as a quick reaction force, always ready to respond to threats on U.S. soil. For Erika, the greatest reward of service was the sense of purpose— waking up each day knowing she was part of something bigger than herself. But the toughest challenges were losses that never fade, and the heavy memories carried from her time as a military police officer.
“Behind every uniform,” she relates, “is a deeply personal story.
LeahGutierrez
Bienlien
My advice to women considering the military is to be prepared to give 100 percent. Prove yourself through grit and hard work. Lead from the front, and your team will always have your back.”
Leah Gutierrez entered the Army in 1996 during peacetime, but her career spanned multiple conflicts. She served in Operation Noble Eagle at Fort Meade, Maryland (2002–2003), Operation Iraqi Freedom in LSA Anaconda, Iraq (2004–2006), and Operation Enduring Freedom in Kandahar, Afghanistan (2009–2010). Though she grew up in a military family, Leah didn’t initially see herself serving. Inspired by a recruiter in her senior year, she discovered the military felt both familiar and full of possibility. “The best part of service,” she shares, “was the friendships forged through shared challenges.” Yet her journey wasn’t without obstacles. Gender gaps in leadership and illfitting equipment often worked against women. The hardest transition came after leaving the Army, when she felt unmoored without its structure. Her advice for young women: “Research career fields, prepare mentally as well as physically, and be ready to advocate for yourself. Above all, hold a strong moral compass.”
From 1991 to 2015, Sandi VanWormer’s military career stretched across both peacetime and wartime, shaped by decades of change. Inspired by her father’s WWII stories and motivated by the GI Bill, she enlisted just three days after high school graduation. Over the years, she came to value most the people she met and the places she traveled. Thanks to social media, she still keeps in touch with many of those she served alongside—even her basic training peers. “The greatest challenge,” she says, “was family separation. With my husband Jim also in the service and five children at home, holidays and birthdays were often spent apart.” Still, she emphasizes the unwavering commitment of service members who sacrifice willingly for a cause greater than themselves. To women considering the military, she advises choosing a career path that translates well to civilian life: “It makes the transition smoother and opens doors for the future.”
Inspired by her father’s Navy service, Laurian Videau believed from a young age that serving her country was one of the most important callings. She enlisted and served both in peacetime and wartime, including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2013–2014. For Laurian, the best part of service was the camaraderie—bonds that transcend background or culture and create lifelong brothers and sisters in arms. Yet being a woman in a male-dominated field wasn’t always easy. “I pushed myself harder,” she explains, “determined to prove I could handle anything my male counterparts could.” Eventually, that persistence earned their respect, and they became like family. Laurian wants the public to understand that military service is a sacrifice freely made out of love for country and freedom. Her advice to women considering the military is enthusiastic: “Do it! You’ll learn you’re stronger than you ever imagined, and the bonds you form will stay with you forever.”
Because You
SERVED
A LEGACY OF SUPPORT FOR VETERANS
IN A COMMUNITY THAT PRIDES itself on honoring those who serve, one local organization is making a tangible difference for veterans and their families. Because You Served, founded by Jarrett Hodson and his father, David Hodson, is dedicated to providing veterans with the support and resources they need during one of life’s most significant transitions— buying or selling a home.
The idea for the organization was born out of Jarrett’s experience, first as a Citadel graduate and later as a mortgage lender in the real estate industry. He recognized a recurring challenge: veterans, frequently relocating due to service obligations, often faced the same closing costs and real estate hurdles as civilian buyers. Jarrett wanted to create a solution that would ease the financial and logistical burden on these men and women, giving back in a meaningful way for their sacrifices.
With his extensive background in community service, entrepreneurship, and veteran advocacy, David became the driving force in turning this vision into a reality. Under his guidance, Because You Served now offers veterans and family members access to complimentary real estate services nationwide,
ensuring they can navigate home transactions with confidence, transparency, and care. The program is supported by sponsors (both real estate agents and businesses) who are dedicated to those who serve.
But the organization’s impact goes far beyond real estate. Because You Served works tirelessly to raise awareness of veteran needs in the local community. “Our mission is simple,” David shares. “We want to honor the commitment of our
veterans by making their lives just a little easier, whether it’s a new home, a new community, or simply knowing someone has their back. That philosophy extends to our first responders as well who can now benefit from the Because You Served program.”
The organization’s work resonates deeply in the area, where residents have embraced the mission wholeheartedly. Because You Served has partnered with local police and fire departments to bring service and outreach programs to our communities and has cultivated a network of supporters who share the vision of giving veterans the recognition and resources they deserve.
As the organization grows, David and Jarrett remain committed to innovation and compassion. Their approach blends practical assistance with heartfelt advocacy, ensuring veterans and first responders are equipped to thrive in their civilian lives while feeling celebrated for their service. W
Because You Served is more than an organization—it’s a movement, one that exemplifies the power of community and the importance of giving back. To learn more, please visit www.becauseyouserved.com.

DEPLOYMENT
veterans in the United States. Each have experienced wartime “storms” with widely varying “boats.” Trauma and mental health challenges accompany them. Since September 2001, over two million Americans have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, with less than half receiving adequate mental health treatment. The numbers are staggering. Training and deployment are rife with challenges. Each with their own personal stories that change a person and unfortunately it is not a “one person storm.” It impacts their families, their social climate, and interpersonal relationships.
Generational trauma is a term used to describe trauma that persists beyond an individual’s life. It is a traumatic experience that is passed down through our DNA. Most of us were raised by families with a history of unresolved trauma, which can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms. There are studies showing the genetic markers or changes in the children of Holocaust survivors, Vietnam veterans, and those at Ground Zero. These studies
solidly substantiate the impact of trauma and reinforce the need for appropriate healing, support systems, and a community where understanding is paramount. This generational trauma affects each person, not just service members.
a family affair
As a pebble drops in the lake, it creates ripples that expand outward. Deployment and trauma have a similar ripple effect, impacting not only the veteran, but also their families with a kaleidoscope of emotions – pride, excitement, anxiety, fear, anger, abandonment, helplessness. The list is infinite. Service members are trained to suppress emotions to complete the mission. This stoic attitude is also carried out by their spouses and manifested in “keep the family together” both physically and mentally during deployment. Both are a huge burden to each other yet carry a vastly different experience.
Change is the “waterway” of the military; it’s a constant flow of demands including and not exclusively within the family
structure. There is excitement when service members return home yet the current of that waterway changes. A deep breath of relief for a “safe” return. Yet new unknowns arise, and invisible wounds start to show. The family has grown and continued without the service members. They have schedules, rules, and memories. Spouses have handled everything, creating new friendships as part of their support system. Children have experienced life with just one parent present.
Service members have experienced the unimaginable — the deep longing to be home, only to find themselves adrift once they arrive. This storm is a new dimension for everyone, testing our understanding of connection and belonging. Yet through active listening, intentionality, and compassion, we can begin to rebuild a new kind of vessel, one strong enough to carry us all forward ... with hope, dignity, and honor. W

CORNELIUS IS SET TO GAIN A MAJOR NEW attraction in 2026 that honors its past while looking toward its future. The upcoming Cornelius History Museum will highlight the town’s agricultural roots, early settlers, and economic growth.
The Cornelius History Museum Board President is David Hodson, who also serves as CEO of Because You Served, LLC. David sees the project as a way to strengthen community ties. “This museum isn’t just about preserving artifacts,” he says, “it’s about preserving stories ... stories of the farmers, families, and veterans who shaped Cornelius and continue to inspire us today.”
The museum is projected to cost about $2 million, with $1 million already raised through private donations and a $500,000 state grant. David calls the early support “a testament to how deeply people care about our shared history.” He adds: “When neighbors, businesses, and civic leaders come together like this, it shows that our town values its roots and believes in our future.”
Scheduled to open in summer 2026, the museum will occupy the Agriculture Building on School Street, which once served as a hub for teaching modern farming practices in the early 1900s. Interactive exhibits will combine historical artifacts with engaging educational programs. “We want visitors of all ages to feel like they’ve stepped back in time,” David smiles. “Kids will be able to touch, see, and even hear the history that built Cornelius.”
... a spot where families can learn together and where our veterans’ contributions are recognized alongside our agricultural heritage.”
More than a collection of displays, the museum will also host community events and school programs, becoming a cultural anchor in the town’s walkable downtown district. “This will be a gathering place,” David shares. “A spot where families can learn together and where our veterans’ contributions are recognized alongside our agricultural heritage.”
A seasoned entrepreneur and community leader, David brings decades of experience in real estate and finance as CEO of Properties of the Carolinas. David’s wife, Judy, is a native of Cornelius and he has three children (Jarrett, Meredith, and Laura Lee) and eight grandchildren.
“Serving veterans and their families taught me that remembering our past strengthens our present,” he reflects. “This museum is a gift to future generations, a reminder of who we are and how we got here.”
Community members can join the effort through donations, volunteer opportunities, and upcoming programs. As Cornelius eagerly anticipates opening day, the Cornelius History Museum stands poised to celebrate the town’s rich history while creating a vibrant destination for years to come.
David Hodson is CEO of Because You Served, which was co-founded by him and his son, Jarrett Hodson. The organization provides free real estate services to veterans, their families, and first responders— recognizing their extreme sacrifices. Through this initiative, David has demonstrated a deep commitment to supporting those who have served and are currently serving, ensuring they receive the recognition and assistance they deserve.

SERVICE
Each November, we pause to honor the men and women whose courage, commitment, and sacrifice safeguard our freedoms. Among these remarkable individuals is Dr. Lindsay Montgomery, who proudly served as a Lieutenant O3 in the United States Navy Corps from 2003 to 2011.
DR. MONTGOMERY ALONG WITH her sister, Dr. Kara Lembo, are the founders and owners of Lembo Montgomery Cosmetic & Family Dentistry in Mooresville. Celebrating 14 years in business, Dr. Montgomery’s path to service blended professional ambition with a deep call to duty—recognizing the Navy as a place to sharpen her clinical skills while leading others.
“It gave me a great opportunity,” she explains, “to gain valuable experience in the field of dentistry along with being in a leadership role that allowed me to work with all walks of life.”
When asked what stands out most from her eight years in uniform, Dr. Montgomery doesn’t hesitate. “The camaraderie among everyone who was serving was the best,” she recalls, “and that bond extended well beyond day-to-day duties. It was about trust, shared responsibility, and the unshakable sense of belonging to something greater than oneself.”
Military life also became a proving ground for personal growth. Learning about oneself to see what you are capable of, especially as a leader, remains one of her most enduring lessons. The Navy demanded adaptability and perseverance, qualities she now
Today, as a respected dentist and community member, Dr. Montgomery hopes Americans remember the character and resilience of those who serve. “All military personnel persevere in any job or task they take on, and they do it with dignity and strength,” she shares. “Everyone helps one another.”
This Veterans Day, we honor Dr. Lindsay Montgomery and all who have worn the uniform. Their sacrifice, service, and spirit remind us that the freedoms we cherish are safeguarded by ordinary citizens who choose an extraordinary path. In saluting Dr. Montgomery, we also salute every veteran whose steadfast dedication continues to inspire a grateful nation. W

THREE WOMEN, ONE PRACTICE, A LIFETIME OF
Sometimes a journey unfolds exactly as it should, shaped by timing, chance, and the quiet forces of fate. At West Lake Dentistry in Denver, three women—Drs. Nicole Naylor, Amber Brooks, and Alexandra Murtagh—have each brought their own experiences, talents, and passions to a practice that continues to grow stronger with every passing year. Their paths converged in ways that seem almost destined, and together they’ve built more than a dental practice. They’ve crafted a space where expertise, compassion, gratitude, and innovation meet. Through the years, each woman’s story has added a layer to the practice’s identity, creating a legacy that reflects resilience, vision, and the subtle magic of timing.
ONCE UPON A TIME
It all began with Dr. Nicole Naylor. Growing up in Parkersburg, West Virginia, a young Nicole discovered early on that dentistry would be a rewarding career choice. At West Virginia University, she excelled in her studies, graduating with honors and earning accolades for her research in endodontics. But beyond the awards and academic achievements, Dr. Naylor’s vision for a dental practice was clear: leadership meant inspiring a team to deliver compassionate, whole-body care.
“It’s staggering to look back through the years,” she smiles. “With hundreds of 5-star reviews and nearly a decade of winning the Best of Lake award, leadership is about setting the standard for excellence while treating every patient with dignity and respect. When you approach dentistry with empathy and a genuine desire to help, you realize it’s not just teeth you’re caring for, it’s people, families, confidence, and selfesteem. That’s what drives me every day.”
Outside the office, Dr. Naylor's life is full of energy and warmth. She and her husband, John, are raising two lively children, ages 10 and 8. “I love to cook and make it a family event,” she shares. “Whether it’s weeknight tacos or a holiday feast, meals become memories. Sharing joy, whether at the table or in the dental chair, is what makes life meaningful.”

THE JOURNEY CONTINUED
A few years later, Dr. Amber Brooks brought her own sense of adventure and compassion to the team. Growing up in a military family, Dr. Brooks learned resilience and adaptability through frequent moves, finally settling in Chesapeake, Virginia. After graduating summa cum laude from Virginia Tech and earning her dental degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, she traveled extensively, visiting 13 countries in Europe—where she met her future husband along the way.
“Six years later, we returned to Italy for our honeymoon,” she says. “Those experiences taught me to embrace life fully, but today, everything I do is for our children, Cash (4) and Eliana Grace (2). Dentistry gives me a way to help others in a tangible, meaningful way. Every time I see a patient leave the office confident in their smile, I feel like I’ve contributed to something bigger than myself. That’s why this work is my passion ... it’s about changing lives one smile at a time.”
2021
A FULL-CIRCLE MOMENT
The team’s story came full circle when Dr. Alexandra Murtagh joined the practice in 2021. She and Dr. Naylor first crossed paths back in 2010 when Alexandra was a receptionist at a Charlotte dental office, and the two instantly clicked. A Huntersville native and proud UNCChapel Hill graduate, Dr. Murtagh later headed to Boston, where she met her husband and honed her craft in private practice. Now raising three sons, she finds deep fulfillment in a life rooted in family, community, and purpose.
Empathy defines Dr. Murtagh’s approach. “Live and Let Live is my motto,” she says. “You never know what someone is going through. Dentistry gives me a way to offer care that extends beyond teeth. It’s about dignity, comfort, and humanity. Helping people feel at ease and confident in their smiles is deeply fulfilling. It’s why I love this work so much. It’s immediate, personal, and meaningful every single day.”
A SHARED MISSION
West Lake Dentistry has grown into more than a dental practice ... it’s a center for community and connection. The team dedicates countless hours to programs like Mission of Mercy, bringing free dental care to underserved communities.
“It’s important for us to pay it forward and give back,” Dr. Naylor says, “and we want our patients to feel heard and supported in every way ... from their dental needs to their comfort and peace of
mind. There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing the work we do can truly change someone’s day, or even their life.”
Dr. Brooks adds, “Being able to serve others in this way reminds me that the most meaningful work is the work that lifts people up.”
Nodding in agreement, Dr. Murtagh concludes: “We’re fortunate to do what we love, and giving back with genuine care is just part of who we are. It’s gratitude in action.” W

HOLIDAY HOSTING
ORGANIZING YOUR HOME FOR STRESS-FREE ENTERTAINING
THE HOLIDAYS HAVE always been my favorite season. There’s something magical about opening your home to friends and family, filling the house with laughter and gathering around a table brimming with good food. But as much as I love entertaining, I also know how quickly the excitement can turn into stress when coats pile up by the door, counters overflow with platters, and you can’t find the serving spoon you swore was right there.
After more than 20 years helping Lake Norman homeowners create beautiful, functional storage solutions, I’ve learned that a few key spaces make all the difference when company arrives: a welldesigned mudroom or drop zone, a dedicated wine area, and a smartly organized pantry.
Cheers to a Custom Wine Room
Entertaining often means sharing a toast, and a custom wine room or built-in bar adds both style and function. Thoughtful shelving and climateconscious storage keep bottles at the perfect temperature and ready to serve. Whether you envision a full wine cellar for a serious collection or a compact built-in bar for weeknight gatherings, these spaces become natural conversation pieces— and they make it easy to offer that perfectly chilled bottle right when the moment calls for it.
A Warm Welcome Starts at the Door
The moment guests walk in sets the tone for the whole evening. A custom mudroom or drop zone keeps the entryway calm and clutter-free. Built-in benches provide a comfortable spot for guests to slip off shoes, while hooks and cubbies give coats, bags, and umbrellas an immediate home. Even a small nook near the garage or side door can become an organized landing pad. When everyone knows exactly where to put their things, you’re free to greet them with a smile instead of juggling armloads of outerwear.
A Pantry That Works as Hard as You Do
The holiday season can put any pantry through its paces. Between extra baking ingredients, party platters, and specialty dishes, it’s easy for shelves to get crowded. With custom pull-outs, adjustable shelving, and well-planned zones, everything from everyday staples to oversized serving platters has a designated spot. I often recommend high shelves or deep drawers for those big platters or special-occasion serving dishes you only use a few times a year. When every item has its place, you can spend less time searching and more time enjoying your guests. W

Set the Mood
add
style,
TO EVERY SPACE
warmth, & soul
THE MOST INVITING HOMES AREN’T THE ones that look staged for a catalog. They’re the ones that feel lived in, loved, and uniquely personal. Striking that balance between style and comfort takes a thoughtful touch, a lot of heart, and a good eye for design. Whether you’re refreshing a single shelf or reimagining an entire room, these tried-andtrue tips will help you add charm, confidence, and character to your space:
Lighting transforms a space, and nothing adds ambiance like candles. Whether flickering on a dining table, glowing in lanterns, or tucked into a bookshelf, they create intimacy and warmth. Choose seasonal scents to make your home smell as inviting as it looks.
Toss in Cozy Throws and Blankets
A draped throw or a basket of blankets says, “Welcome Home.” Beyond function, layering textiles adds depth and creates a relaxed, lived-in vibe.
Don’t Be Afraid to Mix Woods
You don’t need matching wood finishes anymore. Combine up to three tones for interest—light grains with darker stains create beautiful contrast and balance.
Every Room Needs a Touch of Black
Think of black as eyeliner for the room: a little goes a long way. Frames, lamp bases, or cabinet hardware in black add definition, polish, and drama.
Add Life With Greenery and Florals
Let Your Displays
Tell a Story
Just like reading a book, the eye naturally moves from left to right and top to bottom. Arrange shelves, mantles, and tabletops in a flow that feels intuitive. A well-balanced arrangement lets your décor “read” beautifully and feel complete.
Pop With Accent Colors
Neutrals are timeless, but color makes a room come alive. From mustard yellow to sage green or dusty rose, choose hues that reflect your mood or the season, and sprinkle them through accessories, art, or textiles.
Accent With Pillows
Pillows are décor’s style powerhouses. Use them to introduce color, pattern, or texture, and swap them out with the seasons. A few well-placed pillows can completely change the look of a sofa or chair.
Fresh or faux, greenery softens hard edges, brings texture, and adds energy to a room. Mix eucalyptus, magnolia leaves, and seasonal stems for a layered, organic look.

the power of
Advance Care Planning
CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE, especially about illness or the end of life, are never easy. Yet, advance care planning (ACP) is one of the most important steps individuals and families can take to ensure healthcare decisions reflect their values, preferences, and dignity.
At its core, advance care planning is about giving people control. It allows you to document your wishes for medical treatment should you become unable to speak for yourself. This could mean deciding whether you would want aggressive interventions, such as being placed on a ventilator, or choosing comfort-focused care at home. By clarifying these choices in advance, you reduce the burden on loved ones who might otherwise be forced to make agonizing decisions in moments of crisis.
Research shows that ACP not only improves patient satisfaction but also strengthens families. When wishes are clearly documented, family members experience less stress, guilt, and conflict. It can turn a potentially painful situation into one where loved ones can focus on being present rather than debating medical choices.
Advance care planning isn’t just for older adults or those facing serious illness. Life is unpredictable, and unexpected events can happen at any age. Having a plan ensures that your voice is heard no matter the circumstances. A good place to start is by completing an advance directive or living will, and by appointing a healthcare proxy—someone you trust to speak on your behalf if needed.
WHEN WISHES ARE CLEARLY DOCUMENTED, FAMILY MEMBERS EXPERIENCE LESS STRESS, GUILT, & CONFLICT.
Most importantly, advance care planning is not a onetime event. As life changes, so do our priorities. Revisiting your choices regularly ensures that your plan continues to reflect your goals, whether you’re newly married, living with a chronic condition, or entering retirement.
Talking about advance care planning may feel uncomfortable at first, but it is ultimately a gift: a way to safeguard your values, ease the minds of loved ones, and ensure that your healthcare aligns with what matters most: living, and if necessary, dying, on your own terms. W

INSPIRED BY CARE, GROUNDED IN COMPASSION
GROWING UP IN A SMALL ARKANSAS TOWN, Dr. Kayli Standridge learned early the value of hard work, family, and community. Today, those same values guide her practice at Graystone Eye (with locations in Hickory, Lenoir, Lincolnton, Boone, and North Wilkesboro) where she blends clinical expertise with compassion to help patients see more clearly—both in eyesight and in life.
Growing up in Dardanelle, a small town at the foothills of the Ozarks, she was one of five children in a close-knit family. “If my weekends weren’t spent on a ballfield, they were spent in the pastures on my parents’ farm,” she recalls. Sports, cheerleading, and community activities filled her youth, but it was a career shadowing experience in high school that sparked her interest in optometry.
“What stood out to me was how rewarding it felt,” she shares. “Helping people see clearly has such an immediate and meaningful impact on their daily lives.” That spark led her to the University of Central Arkansas. There, she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biology before earning her Doctor of Optometry from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. Clinical externships at the Greenville VA Medical Center in North Carolina and Volunteer Eye Care in Knoxville, Tennessee, deepened her skills in both medical and primary eye care.
Dr. Standridge says her greatest inspiration comes from her mother. “She treats everyone with genuine care and compassion and is always willing to go the extra mile for those around her,” she smiles. “Watching the way she serves others has shaped how I want to care for my patients.”
Outside the exam room, Dr. Standridge makes intentional space for family, friends, and hobbies. “Balance comes from being intentional with my time and priorities,” she says. She enjoys trying new restaurants, cooking, hiking, and watching sports. Travel is also a passion, and her most recent adventure included Spain, Italy, and France, with a highlight at the Monaco Grand Prix. Next up: Scotland, where she’ll test her golf swing at St. Andrews. “People might be surprised to know that I’ll be playing golf there next July as a rookie golfer,” she laughs.
For Dr. Standridge, clear vision extends beyond eyesight. It’s about living with purpose, compassion, and connection. “Eye care is unique in that I often see patients year after year, which allows me to really get to know them and their families over time,” she says. “I value being a consistent part of their health journey and someone they can trust with their care.” W

Letting Go THE ART OF
AS AUTUMN DEEPENS, the trees offer a quiet lesson: letting go is not loss, but a necessary step toward renewal. Each leaf that drifts to the ground reminds us that release can be graceful, creating space for rest and eventual regrowth. November, with its crisp air and bare branches, invites us to consider what we might shed before stepping into a new year.
Letting go often begins within. We can soften our grip on grudges, regrets, and the endless replay of conversations that no longer serve us. Like trees releasing leaves past their season, we, too, can ask: What am I holding onto that weighs me down? Simple practices—a journal, a mindful walk beneath falling leaves, or a few moments of meditation—can illuminate mental clutter and guide us toward clarity.
The body thrives when we make space. Release may mean habits that drain rather than nourish such as late-night scrolling or skipped rest. Instead of harsh resolutions, think of this as gentle pruning. Small, thoughtful changes create room for energy, wellness, and rhythms that feel natural and sustaining. Every mindful step is an act of kindness toward ourselves.
Trees do not fear the bareness of winter; they rest, knowing renewal lies ahead. So can we.
There is also a deeper surrender that behooves our soul when we release control, old expectations, or identities that no longer fit. Rituals can help. Try writing down what you wish to let go of, then burn the notes in a campfire, imagining each worry dissolving like autumn leaves carried away on a breeze.
The beauty of this season’s lesson is trust. Trees do not fear the bareness of winter; they rest, knowing renewal lies ahead. So can we. Letting go is not emptiness. It is preparation for growth, joy, and fresh beginnings.
This November, pause beneath the falling leaves. Breathe deeply. Notice what is ready to be released and let it go with grace. In doing so, you make room to enter the next season lighter, freer, and more fully alive. W
