HISTORY

Mediterranean Revival architecture is a modern interpretation of traditional Mediterranean design that emerged in the early 1900s.
Mediterranean Revival eclecticism draws upon Spanish and Italian influences, as well as those of other Mediterranean countries (Greek, Turkish, and Moroccan).
Mediterranean Revival Architecture is a style that was popular during the early 20th century throughout the United States.
The Roaring 20s saw the rise of newly wealthy class of Americans looking to live in structures that exhibited leisure and relaxation, qualities they associated with Mediterranean countries like Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Morocco.

origins
CHARACTERISTICS & TYPES

Characteristic often features elements like wood beam ceilings, stucco finishes, porticos, large courtyards. and balconies.
Characteristics of Mediterranean Revival architecture include stucco exteriors, and symmetrical placement of doors and windows. Homes may also include ornate details around windows, wrought iron elements, and archways.
Symmetry for both floor plan layouts and placement of doors and windows on the exterior. This symmetry is unique to Renaissance Italy’s love of Ancient Greek and Roman classicism.
Influenced by both native Spanish and colonial architecture, red terracotta roofing tiles are typically shaped like a half-cylinder to allow drainage and airflow, and are usually low-pitched with broad eaves to help the exterior walls cool in warmer climates.

FUTURE OF MEDITERRANEAN STYLE

Mediterranean architecture is still a popular design choice for homes today
Considered an eclectic style drawing on several influences and architectural styles rather than just one, Mediterranean Revival remains a popular design choice for homes even today.
Today, many ornate homes that combine elements from any of those countries are called Mediterranean (or Neo-Mediterranean) because of the composite of cultural influences from that region.
Today, Mediterranean Revival remains popular in warm regions, valued for its blend of elegance, functionality, and tranquil ambience that connects indoor and outdoor spaces. Its enduring appeal lies in its unique fusion of historic charm with elements of modern luxury.

It was a popular choice for hotels, apartment buildings, and residences.
It was especially popular in California and Florida in the 1920s and 1930s.
Spanish Colonial, created by early American Spanish settlers, inform the materials popular in Mediterranean Revival architecture, including terra cotta roof tiles and stucco exteriors.
