We all know that nutrition is a key part of wellness. The collaborative relationship between our College of Health & Wellness and our world-renowned College of Food Innovation & Technology will give you an edge. Nearly every program provides the opportunity to study nutrition and get into the kitchen to learn how to make nutritious meals for different health needs. It’s a unique advantage that most other universities don’t offer in their health programs.
CULN2414 Cooking for Health & Wellness
Exercise and Sports Science, Public Health and Health Science students can take this course, which teaches the fundamental culinary skills needed to develop and cook nutritious menus. The menus created also address the socioeconomic and cultural barriers that can impact a patient or client’s health.
CULN2020 Applied Culinary Nutrition
One of nine culinary courses Dietetics and Applied Nutrition students complete, this major course shows students how to translate nutritional recommendations into delicious meals, as well as exploring ingredient selection, portioning, healthcare institution policies and specialized dietary requirements.
One of our most distinct features is that we have two campuses: Charlotte, North Carolina, and Providence, Rhode Island. Each city has its own vibe, but they both are a perfect environment for college students thanks to thriving food, entertainment, art and professional sports scenes.
Whichever city you choose, you’ll be at the center of it all. Just steps from campus are endless opportunities for jobs, internships, industry mentors and inspiration. JWU has developed many strong partnerships with healthcare facilities in each city.
See for yourself by planning a visit at jwu.edu/visit. Students who visit campus for an in-person tour or admissions event before December 31 of their senior year of high school could be eligible to receive a JWU Visit Grant of up to $5,000 annually, renewable for up to four years while at JWU.
OUR CAMPUSES
Providence, R.I. and Charlotte, N.C.

You’ll have access to cutting-edge learning facilities that will allow you to simulate medical environments and scenarios, conduct physical evaluations of athletes and patients, or hone essential skills in your chosen program. Examples include:
The Nursing Simulation Lab is designed to feel just like a hospital. It features high-fidelity adult and infant manikins which allow students to simulate a variety of scenarios and actively practice IV catheter insertion, blood drawing, intubation and other essential skills.
Dedicated to our Physician Assistant Studies master’s degree program, this center features a Clinical Skills Lab where students conduct physical exams and practice suturing, venipuncture, casting and splinting. It also features an Anatomy Lab where students perform dissections on real cadavers.
Steve Jacob ’26
An undergraduate student in the Health Science program, Jacob has already had his research published in the Rhode Island Medical Journal and the Journal of Gambling Studies. He has spent time working with faculty mentors and fellow students in JWU’s Center for Student Research & Interdisciplinary Collaboration to analyze real public health data and conduct research to make an impact in the health field.
He has also presented some of his work at the Rhode Island Public Health Association Summit and to his peers at the annual JWU Student Research, Design & Innovation Symposium.
Jacob aims to become an orthodontist, but he also wants to continue using research to understand healthcare from the patient’s perspective.

“JWU stood out — I was especially attracted to the Faculty Mentor Program, which allowed me to be partnered with a dedicated faculty member who would serve as my primary advisor throughout my undergraduate years.”
