Motion Ideas in
Big ideas start in the John Hazen White College of Arts & Sciences. Those ideas are then brought to life — students are advocating for change in the criminal justice system, designing their own brands, conducting biological research, directing independent films and more. Here, you’ll develop the ability to think critically, communicate effectively and lead with purpose.
Every program in this college offers a variety of electives which will enhance your studies and offer the chance to explore different paths and discover new passions. Or, if you’re already dialed in to a specific path, you might prefer one of this college’s three-year degree program offerings. Read on to see what you can do here.

In 2024, JWU became the first university in the country to offer three-year bachelor’s degree programs, and many of them happen to be in the College of Arts & Sciences: Computer Science, Criminal Justice and Design.
It’s the same high-quality JWU education and complete college experience, but streamlined to help you complete your specific career goals.

Let’s Get REAL
Reimagining Experiential & Applied Learning (REAL) is our unique approach to education — every single course you take will have experiential or active learning components to make you an active participant in your education. This can come in the form of site visits, industry projects, debates, class discussions, simulations and other hands-on exercises.
In addition to REAL, you can also customize your general education courses (aka “gen eds”) to be tailored to your specific interests or allow you to explore new topics.
It’s a completely different way of thinking about education that puts you in the driver’s seat and makes every single course a valuable piece of your experience.

A Tale of Two Cities
One of our most distinct features is that we have two campuses: Charlotte, North Carolina, and Providence, Rhode Island. Each city has its own vibe, but they both are a perfect environment for college students thanks to thriving food, entertainment, art and professional sports scenes.
Whichever city you choose, you’ll be at the center of it all. Just steps from campus are endless opportunities for jobs, internships, industry mentors and inspiration. JWU has developed many strong partnerships in a wide range of industries.
See for yourself by planning a visit at jwu.edu/visit.
Students who visit campus for an in-person tour or admissions event before December 31 of their senior year of high school could be eligible to receive a JWU Visit Grant of up to $5,000 annually, renewable for up to four years while at JWU.

Specialty Spaces
JWU’s labs and facilities are designed to fuel your curiosity and professional development by simulating real-world environments and offering cutting-edge technology and equipment. Examples include:
Criminal Justice Labs
Criminal Justice students investigate mock crime scenes to gather evidence in the Crime Scene Room, and learn how to analyze their findings in the Crime Lab. They have the tools and tech they need to conduct forensic fingerprint and blood spatter analysis, bullet trajectory research and more.
Center for Media Production
This creative space features two lightcontrolled studios with green screens, a podcasting studio, a writer’s room, editing suites, Mac workstations with industrystandard software and an extensive inventory of camera, lighting and sound equipment for students to use.

Hailey Sangillo ’27
A lifelong passion for marine animals and a desire for career flexibility brought Sangillo to the Animal Science program, where she has already taken advantage of exciting opportunities and experiences.
In her Coastal Ecology class, Sangillo went on a boat tour of Save The Bay’s Providence Bay location, which led her to apply for an internship with the organization. She spent the summer as an aquarium education intern for Save The Bay’s Hamilton Family Aquarium in Newport, Rhode Island.
“Animal Science has given me more of a generalized field to work in and explore certain career paths to figure out what I do and don’t want to do, so having the option to work in an aquarium and get that aquatic marine life experience has been amazing. It really has solidified that is probably something I want to pursue in the future.”
