the delahoussaye FAMILY

If you’re looking for the definition of big beautiful family, it’s definitely the Delahoussaye’s. Nancy, one of five siblings, and Jerry, one of ten, set out to create their own brood. Blessed with four daughters, they enjoyed living in Meadowbrook. But as months turned to years and graduations turned to grandchildren, they knew they had outgrown their home and began eyeing a new piece of property large enough to house the entire krewe. Though they hadn’t considered building a home from the ground up, the opportunity presented itself when they ran into a friend living in the Sanctuary who told them about the lots on Leyland Lane. While all Nancy saw was woods, Jerry fell in love with the land and immediately recognized its potential. Sealing the deal with real estate agent Rene Ferran in 2015, they began the design process with Matt Vokel at studioMV. In 2018,

their home was ready to be filled with furniture and family! Sanctuary is now the epicenter of the family, especially with three of their four daughters living within the Greater New Orleans area. Their second daughter, Rachael, lives in Lakeview with her husband Trey and their five children: Collette, who they call Lettie, is 11, Watson is nine, Gerard is seven, Blaise is five, and Hildegard, lovingly called Hilde, is two. They attend St. Dominic School in Lakeview where Nancy used to teach. Their third daughter Sarah lives in Covington with her husband Jeremy and their six children: Helen, named after Jerry’s mom, is 11, Amelia is nine, Zelie’ is seven, Edith is four, and Mary Margaret and Isaac are almost two twins. They go to St. Timothy’s and Holy Family School, which is a home school hybrid program. Fourth daughter Abby, her husband, and four children live in Cary, North Carolina,

COVID, and, with their daughter and son-in-law both being doctors, they were able to check in on Nancy and Jerry daily. “It was comforting,” explains Nancy. “We love being there for them to help when needed, and I feel they are always there for us. It is very special.”

They also love the solitude of the neighborhood, the beautiful tree-filled spaces, the tranquility of the lake, the clear sky full of stars. The neighborhood fits them and their needs. Their Catholic faith is also very important to them, and being only an eight minute drive from their church Mary Queen of Peace is a locational bonus!

but visit often. Their children are Cecilie, lovingly nicknamed CeCe, who is 11, Marcelle is nine, Laurel is seven, and Calvin is four. Abby’s children go to Cary Christian School.

Their literal next door neighbor is their first daughter Rebecca, her husband Erik, and their four children: Genevieve, named after Nancy’s mother who they call Gigi, is 15, Julien is 14, Simone is 11, and Vivienne is nine. The girls all go to Christ Episcopal School and Julien is about to start his first year at Jesuit.

With all this space, Nancy and Jerry can now host their 170+ family members every year for Thanksgiving. It’s always been Jerry’s family tradition for him and his siblings to rotate hosting Thanksgiving, until the Sanctuary house was complete. Cousins from Georgia, Florida, Connecticut, Mississippi, Texas, and multiple cities in Louisiana gather at tables on their outdoor patio and inside their spacious kitchen.

Everyone brings their own special dish or dessert, and it’s serve-yourself style! “One niece makes a great chocolate pie, and my daughter Rachael makes several different types of amazing pies,” Nancy gushes. Some of the grandchildren say Grace, everyone enjoys the delicious meal, then all the kids play football in the yard, fish on the deck, and the adults light up the fire pit with an after dinner glass of wine. It is a very special day for Nancy and Jerry. “We’re always sad when it is over.”

“I love living next door to my daughter and her family,” Nancy says. “We get to see the grandchildren often and that is such a blessing.” The kids fish off the large deck overlooking Crystal Lake, come over for meals, and play in the upstairs play and crafting room with Nancy. It was also a comfort to have them right next door during k

While they hate to say goodbye to the whole family, relaxing in the den and on their deck after a long day. Jerry is a practicing attorney and real estate broker, and Nancy is a retired teacher, but enjoys teaching her grandchildren during their home schooling twice a week.

Throughout their home, you feel the warmth of

their family embracing you; in the ‘grandma chair’ from Nancy’s grandmother’s home to the two paintings that remind them of their granddaughters. And whether they’re sharing Jerry’s turkey, cheese, and French fry omelet after Christmas and Thanksgiving or cracking up over “Home Alone” in the den, living in the Sanctuary is where they are all most at home.

sanctuary residents THE macke family pet

Teddy Macke

Have you ever seen a cuter Christmas present than this? Mr. Teddy Leonardo (after the Ninja Turtle) Rainbow Sunshine Macke snuggled his way into the family just 9 months ago. While he’s the youngest of three siblings, Emma, William, and Hudson, he’s already taken on many responsibilities!

Teddy has a very steady daily schedule. He gets up bright and early to wake his sister, Emma, for school. He doesn’t want her to be late. Then, Teddy has to go to school himself at the Mandeville Canine Academy. Sometimes he socializes with his Golden Retriever fur cousin, Rudy. After school, he waits for Emma at the bus stop and walks her home.

After a big day, Teddy loves relaxing with his family on the screened-in porch. Sometimes he’ll take a dip in the pool, or have a good old fashioned chew session with his favorite gigantic carrot stuffy, his personal lovey that he carries around everywhere.

And while Teddy enjoys the fruits of life, he feels his mortality, too. Teddy had an accident this April. Being a very enthusiastic puppy, he jumped out of his Aunt’s car and broke his femur bone. After surgery and physical therapy to regain strength in his back leg, Teddy was back living his best life again as of June 16.

Cheers to a silly, smart, fun-loving golden doodle who’s making a mark on the Macke Family.

Let Them Sniff. Seriously.

Your dog isn’t being stubborn when they slam on the brakes during a walk to sniff a bush for 3.5 minutes. They’re reading the news. To dogs, sniffing is how they process the world—like social media, email, and a neighborhood gossip thread rolled into one.

Dogs have up to 300 million scent receptors (you have 6 million). Their olfactory bulb takes up 15% of their brain (yours? Barely 0.01%). They literally inhale through the front and exhale through the sides. This lets them sniff non-stop. Oh, and each nostril works independently so they can track scent in 3D.

Yes, their nose is basically a supercomputer.

When you yank your dog away from a sniffy spot, it’s like someone grabbing your phone mid-text or pulling a book out of your hands mid-sentence. It’s rude.

Also, your dog can smell your mood. Stress hormones like cortisol? Yes, they pick that up too.

So instead of rushing them, take a breath. Let them sniff. It’s not a distraction, it’s enrichment.

Sniffing is their version of mindfulness, self-care, and investigative journalism.

You see the world. They smell it. Let them do what they do best.

Happy Sniffing.

Love, Dr G.

10 TO-DOS IN THE FALL TO GET YOUR HOME READY FOR THE SPRING MARKET

So, it’s fall, and you are thinking of selling in the spring. Fall is the perfect time to get ahead of the game so your home hits the market looking its absolute best. Here’s how to use the cooler months to your advantage:

Declutter & Organize: Start sorting closets, cabinets, and storage spaces now so you’re not overwhelmed later. Less clutter will make rooms feel larger and more inviting.

Freshen Your Walls & Baseboards: Walk your home with a critical eye. Touch up paint, wipe down trim, and repair scuffs or chips so everything looks crisp and cared for.

Trim & Tidy the Landscaping: Cut back overgrown shrubs and trees, and plan pruning with spring blooms in mind so your yard pops when buyers arrive.

Service Your HVAC System: Have your heating and cooling system checked now to avoid surprises later. A clean bill of health reassures buyers.

Flush Your Tankless Water Heater: Prevent mineral buildup and keep it running efficiently; another maintenance detail buyers will appreciate. Schedule a Pest Inspection: Call your pest control company to check for wood-destroying insects and address any issues early.

Gather Your Records: Collect receipts, manuals, and warranty info for appliances, upgrades, and maintenance. Buyers love proof of a well-cared-for home.

Deep Clean the Details: Light fixtures, vents, door handles, and switch plates often get overlooked but make a big impact when spotless.

Address Minor Repairs: Fix loose knobs, leaky faucets, and squeaky doors. Little problems can make buyers wonder about bigger ones.

Be Ready to Move Fast: When interest rates dip...or the day after Mardi Gras (whichever comes first!), the spring market will be in full swing. Have your home photo-ready so you can list immediately.

The bottom line, fall prep means less stress and a smoother, more successful sale when spring arrives. For a complete home analysis, come visit Fine Southern Properties located in The Sanctuary Office right at the front door of our neighborhood!

Embrace Healthy Aging This Fall

September is Healthy Aging Month. It’s a time to refocus and take steps to improve your physical, mental, social, and all around well-being.

GET STARTED WITH THESE SEVEN STEPS:

• PRIORITIZE PREVENTIVE CARE

Schedule your annual physical and screenings— proactive care is the foundation of graceful aging.

• FUEL WITH FALL SUPERFOODS

Seasonal produce like squash, apples, and leafy greens are rich in antioxidants that support brain and heart health.

• STAY STRONG, STAY STEADY

Incorporate balance and resistance training into your weekly routine to prevent falls and maintain muscle mass.

• INVEST IN SLEEP HYGIENE

Aging well means sleeping well. Set a consistent bedtime and limit screens to support deep, restorative sleep.

• PROTECT YOUR BRAIN HEALTH

Engage in activities that challenge your mind—learning a new language, playing an instrument, or puzzles all count.

• MIND YOUR MEDS

As we age, our bodies metabolize medications differently. Review prescriptions and supplements with your physician regularly.

• STAY SOCIAL

Strong social ties are linked to longer life and better mental health. Book those dinners, walks, or calls with loved ones.

Get the complete picture of your health with our Galleri Cancer Screening and, or advanced Whole Body MRI. At Covington Trace, we provide wellness testing options designed to provide actionable insights and peace of mind.

Combat the Dry Season

We are so accustomed to the tropical summer showers every day at 3:00 PM like clockwork that we’re not always ready for the surprisingly dry autumn on the horizon. September 22nd is officially the first day of autumn this year, and to prepare ourselves for this change in weather from wet to dry, dewy to dusty, we must adjust our lawn care habits. In preparation, here are some rules of green thumb to remember:

• FERTILIZING

September is the month to fertilize your plants, trees, and grass. This process gets rid of diseased fungus that hurts your plants and grass. Make sure to do this process between four and eight times a year.

• WATERING

October is notoriously dry. Charge up your irrigation systems starting at the end of September to combat dry, browning grass.

• GROOMING

Continue manicuring your plants to keep them healthy. Mow your grass once a week until about mid October or when the temperature starts to fall. Then you can alter your mowing to every two weeks.

• DRY LEAVES

Raking isn’t good for you or your grass. Instead, take advantage of the dry leaves on your lawn and turn them into natural mulch. Simply mow over the leaves to break them down and to disperse them through your lawn. No trash bag leaf clean up for you this autumn.

• GARDENING

Fall is the time to replant flowers, trees, and shrubs, like citrus trees or azaleas. Keep your garden beds healthy by pulling weeds, tidying up debris, and using the natural mulch you may have created from your mowed leaves.

Damon Folds

Sophomore Basketball Recruit at Malone University

Meet Damon Folds, an incoming Sophomore at Malone University in Canton, Ohio and proud resident of The Sanctuary! A transplant from Palm Beach, Florida, Damon has made Mandeville his home base. Even while he’s playing Division Two Basketball for Malone University this Fall (go Pioneers!), he still finds time to come home to The Sanctuary and give back to his community.

Being recruited to the Pioneers Basketball team is a dream come true. Ever since he was a little boy, Damon loved the game. Core memories of him and his Dad, Josh, watching basketball games on TV from his Kindergarten years on created a passion and shared bond that inspired Damon. By third grade, he was playing elementary ball, and his dad was right there on the court to coach him. As his basketball career blossomed from elementary to high school varsity, Dad was always there to coach and cheer!

So you can imagine, he and Dad, as well as his entire family, are absolutely over the moon about his career at Malone University. His new coach, Phil Alibrandi, already knows, “Damon is a great person who fits Malone.” He works hard on the court, with serious goals of attaining NBA status or playing professionally overseas. He’s also incredibly determined in the classroom, making the Dean’s List this past year. Set to graduate in 2028, Damon’s picked the perfect major for pursuing his basketball future as a player and perhaps one day a coach himself. After all, Damon learned coaching from the closest people in his life.

His new Coach Alibrandi is, “looking forward to adding his character, competitiveness, and playmaking to our team.” It’s a character grounded in his core Christian values. When he’s home in Mandeville, Damon shares his wisdom with the next generation of basketball lovers by coaching and training youth basketball with JC Younger. And on Sundays, you’ll find him at the Church of the King, where he finds Divine inspiration.
