Introducing the ISCPA Leadership Summit 2025, our newest event set to energize members with a dynamic blend of networking opportunities and applicable leadership strategies. Set for Thursday, May 1 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Ankeny, the summit is free for ISCPA members.

A highlight of the summit is the keynote address by Suzanna de Baca, CEO of Story Board Advisors. Suzanna is renowned as a thought leader in human-centered leadership, with extensive experience guiding organizations across the public, private, familyowned and nonprofit sectors. Suzanna will share what it takes to be a future-ready leader and you will leave with actionable insights to strengthen your leadership roles within ISCPA and beyond, ensuring that you’re not just keeping up with change, but driving it!

Following the keynote, a leadership workshop led by ISCPA members

Jenny McGarry and Monica Steckel will invite participants to translate inspiration into action. This interactive session is designed to provide practical strategies that members can implement in their own professional settings and in volunteer roles. The workshop aims to foster collaboration and encourage the exchange of ideas among peers, ultimately contributing to the personal and collective growth of members and the Society.

The program includes lunch, a special awards presentation recognizing the Outstanding Committee Chair and Distinguished Service honorees, and the election of the ISCPA Board of Directors. The day allows us to celebrate volunteers, acknowledge leaders and inspire members to take advantage of new opportunities.

“This summit is a unique opportunity for our members to deepen their involvement with ISCPA while gaining valuable insights from a recognized leader in organizational engagement and board leadership,” said ISCPA Interim CEO Ardis Kelley. “We are excited to offer an event that blends member involvement with hands-on leadership development.”

Don’t miss the ISCPA Leadership Summit 2025. The event underscores ISCPA’s commitment to nurturing talent and strengthening the leadership community among its members, providing a platform for growth, connection and shared success.

BOI reporting gets interim final rule

FinCEN has issued an interim final rule removing the requirement for U.S. companies and U.S. persons from having to provide Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) to FinCEN under the Corporate Transparency Act. Additionally, the interim final rule revises the definition of a reporting company to mean only those entities that are formed under the law of a foreign country and that have registered to do business in any U.S. state or jurisdiction.

All entities created in the U.S. and their beneficial owners will be exempt from the BOI reporting requirements. Foreign entities must report their BOI to FinCEN under new deadlines.

• Foreign entities registered before the interim final rule’s publication must file BOI reports within 30 days of that date.

• Foreign entities registered on or after the interim final rule’s publication must file within 30 calendar days of receiving notice that their registration is effective.

Questions and concerns surrounding BOI filings, deadlines and the CPA’s role in helping clients with the filing process have been prominently featured in our publications and ISCPA Link, our member-only online discussion community, since 2023.

FinCEN is accepting comments on the interim final rule and intends to finalize the rule this year. Members are encouraged to share this important update with their clients and businesses (www.iacpa.org/fincen).

RESOURCES TO HELP

If your firm hasn’t started the transition from a system of quality control to a system of quality management, you’re late to the game, but you still can finish on time. Implementation of the new QM standards is required by Dec. 15, 2025, which is around the corner.

Resources and links to information supporting quality management implementation are available on the ISCPA website at www.iacap.org/qms and also at aicpa-cima.com/auditqm (some are available only to AICPA members).

If you’re seeking guidance on this topic, ISCPA’s May seminar with Jim Martin can help. A special bonus opportunity is available only for participants of this event. See the registration page for details.

CPA licensure bill advances

The ISCPA-backed bill to add another path for those seeking the CPA license in Iowa is advancing through the Iowa Legislature.

PROGRESS

After unanimously clearing both the House and Senate State Government Committees, the bill HF 778 was brought to the floor of the House on March 17 where it once again had the support of all legislators. The Senate version of the bill, SF 477, was attached to the House bill and awaits its date on the Senate’s debate schedule. The bill has satisfied the requirements to remain eligible beyond the second funnel deadline on April 4.

To stay informed about this legislation and other bills we are watching, subscribe to Take 5, ISCPA’s legislative update emails at www.iacpa.org/my-cpa/ subscriptions

UAA PROPOSED CHANGES

The AICPA and NASBA are also changing their position on licensure and following multiple states in seeking additional pathways and changes in practice mobility. The AICPA and NASBA released proposed changes to the Uniform Accountancy Act (UAA) that will open a third educational path and help pave the way for other states to adopt CPA licensure rules that align with the legislation introduced in Iowa. They are requesting comments on the proposed changes by May 3. Find the proposal and comment form on the NASBA website under latest news (nasba.org).

Watch for more updates on Iowa’s CPA licensure bill as we work to get the bill across the finish line.

New Quality Management Standards take effect

soon

The accounting profession is undergoing a significant transformation with the introduction of the AICPA’s new Quality Management (QM) standards. These standards, effective Dec. 15, 2025, mark a shift from traditional quality control systems to a proactive, risk-based approach tailored to each firm’s unique circumstances.

Why this matters for CPAs

The impending effective date necessitates immediate attention from CPAs to assess and adapt to these standards. Key actions include:

• Understanding applicability: Grasping how the new requirements impact your firm’s specific services and operations is crucial.

• Developing a tailored QM system: Creating a system that aligns with the new standards and addresses identified quality risks.

• Staff training: Educating team members on risk assessment and the importance of ongoing monitoring to maintain high-quality engagements.

Proactive adoption of these standards not only ensures compliance but also enhances the integrity and reputation of your practice. Visit the ISCPA QM resources page for more information and updates: www.iacpa.org/qms

CAITLYN BOYD

JOB: Senior investment accountant with Athene in West Des Moines

ALMA MATER: University of Northern Iowa

HOMETOWN: Webster City

My name is Caitlyn Boyd, I use all pronouns, and I am a CPA living and working in Des Moines.

What can we find you doing when you’re not at work? When I’m not at work I am probably playing some sort of sport through the Pride Sports League or volunteering with my church, Downtown Disciples.

What’s one thing you can’t make it through the day without? I absolutely can’t make it through the day without snuggles from my fur babies and extending my Duolingo streak!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Ten years from now, I will be making an impact in the nonprofit sector helping organizations obtain and stay compliant with their tax-exempt status while achieving their goals and missions!

Who inspires you the most? I am really inspired and motivated by several folks but a few local leaders that come to mind include Melanie Stall, a CPA working with new and young nonprofit organizations in Iowa to get their bookkeeping set up, helping them apply for tax exempt status, and assisting them with the required annual information returns to stay in compliance. Breanna Young, an attorney and a fierce advocate for LGBTQ+ individuals, that has helped new nonprofits get their organizational files in order and filed so that they can qualify for tax exempt status. Max Mowitz, a lifelong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and the liberation of all marginalized peoples, inspires me with their work in activism, mutual aid, and compassion for all.

TV series I’m currently obsessed with: Traitors! I also enjoy watching Unrivaled, a women’s professional three-on-three basketball league.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment? The professional accomplishment I am the proudest of is the work I get to do with the Iowa Trans Mutual Aid Fund (ITMAF). ITMAF provides small grants to Iowans seeking gender-affirming care throughout the state.

What ways have you been involved in ISCPA and how have they benefited you? I have participated in the Iowa CPAs Month of Service, Emerging Leaders Conference, Courage on the Court, LEAP lunch and learns and the Insurance Industry Conference to name a few! These incredible events have helped me expand my network, stay up to date with industry developments, and provided opportunities to learn about and practice different styles of leadership!

What made you want to become a CPA? I wanted to become a CPA because it seemed like a career that had optionality and security. A CPA could work in the automotive industry, financial services, healthcare, nonprofit, and education to name a few. While technology will evolve and change what the day-to-day would look like, I believe CPAs will still be needed to analyze, advise, and interact with the technology and interpret those things for their clients and stakeholders.

What’s your best piece of advice for a college student thinking about becoming a CPA? Explore ALL the options that interest you and find work that makes you feel inspired!

My favorite artists right now: 76th Street, Forrest Frank, and Chappell Roan.

My first job: Was as a checker at K-Mart in Webster City

Favorite line from a TV show: “Okay, I don’t know how to fold broken cheese like that!” – David Schitt, Schitt’s Creek
