LEADING MEDICINE
Message From the CEO

The opening of Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital is the latest step in Houston Methodist’s journey to bring unparalleled care to the Cypress community. We have been growing our presence in the area for more than a decade, and opening this hospital has been a multi-year project — one that from the very beginning has been centered around the needs of those here in Cypress.
The personal care and attention you have come to expect with Houston Methodist will continue to be a major theme at our new, full-scale, acute-care hospital, with more than 800 skilled and passionate caregivers and support staff. In keeping with this theme, we have recruited the finest clinicians from around the country to bring their expertise to Cypress.
To create a truly innovative hospital, we are outfitting this excellent team of caregivers with game-changing technology that keeps our patients as the focus. We also have been intentional about designing spaces that draw on our long history of offering emotional and spiritual care alongside the physical care — all while embracing our patients and their diverse backgrounds.
Expanding Our Services in Cypress
Houston Methodist opened its first primary care clinic in Cypress in 2014, quickly followed by an emergency care center and additional primary care offices. In 2020, we expanded that footprint even further by opening primary and specialty care services in Towne Lake that included physical therapy and breast imaging.
Whether you are visiting us at one of our primary care doctors’ offices or are a patient at this new hospital, Houston Methodist is here for all your health care needs.
On the following pages, you will see how much work we have put into creating this new campus, with you and your family at the center of it all. We are eager to build on our legacy of leading medicine. And we are excited to continue expanding our services in pursuit of providing unparalleled care — right here in Cypress. •
Best,

Trent Fulin CEO, SVP, Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital

For more than a year, we have been providing comprehensive cancer care and orthopedic services in our medical office buildings on campus. And now, the hospital is opening with the full spectrum of health care services — so that you have access to that leading care right here in your own backyard.
In addition to a full-service imaging center and childbirth center, Houston Methodist Cypress offers a wide range of specialty care, including cardiovascular services, gastrointestinal care and more.
But that is only the beginning. Houston Methodist Cypress is poised to grow alongside the community. The building will have the capacity to nearly triple patient beds, allowing even more community members to access world-class health care close to home.
Here’s more on what you can expect as the hospital continues to grow through this first phase. •
How Do You Know What Kind of Doctor You Need?

For both active and aging adults, there is no shortage of things that can go wrong with the human body — it’s home to more than 70 organs, 200 bones and 600 muscles. That’s why having an open and communicative relationship with a primary care provider (PCP), also known as a primary care doctor, allows you to stay ahead of any health concerns — hopefully well before more serious problems occur. And, in the event that illness does strike, having a PCP means you will have a dedicated and familiar health care partner in your corner to help guide your care.
Whether you have a painful earache, broken bone or chest pain, or are learning that your blood pressure or A1C is high, your PCP is there to make sure you get the right treatment or help connect you with a specialist when you need advanced care.
WHAT IS A PRIMARY CARE DOCTOR AND WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE ONE?
A PCP is a medical expert who knows your health history and is best equipped to diagnose, treat or triage almost any issues that arise. He or she is your go-to partner for staying healthy, and handles your annual physical exam: a check-in appointment to make sure you are current on immunizations and routine health screenings, including blood work to help detect common health problems early.
“The sooner we catch a chronic health issue, the better. And we can catch those issues at an annual visit and help you manage the condition moving forward.”
— Dr. Megan Arthur, primary care sports medicine physician at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at Cypress
PCPs also can help you manage acute illness or symptoms, such as mild back pain or a sore throat. Additionally, these providers can guide your care for common chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and arthritis.
If your symptoms are particularly uncomfortable and you need care sooner, you can use Virtual Urgent Care — 24/7 on-demand video visits with a Houston Methodist provider from the comfort and convenience of home, work or wherever you are in Texas. Getting care sooner rather than later is key for issues such as sinus infections, urinary tract infections or digestive problems like constipation and heartburn.
“Anything that’s disrupting your day-to-day life and isn’t going away after a few days, that’s a reason to come in.”
— Dr. Megan Arthur
If you’re experiencing a life-threatening issue, call 911 or go to an emergency room attached to a hospital. Time matters when it comes to heart attack, stroke and other serious medical events.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED SPECIALTY CARE?
Most of the time, your primary care doctor will start by implementing first-line treatments for your symptoms or issue — recommending lifestyle changes or medications known to help. Symptoms that don’t get better with baseline treatment may require advanced care from a specialist — a doctor with extra training in care for specific types of conditions. In this case, your PCP can refer you to a specialist.
“For instance, if someone has acid reflux and we’ve ruled out the common causes and tried a few medications, but symptoms still won’t go away, a referral to a gastroenterologist might be in order,” Arthur explained. “That’s when we rely on a specialist’s training in that specific condition or on his or her particular skills, like performing an endoscopy to see what’s going on inside the esophagus.”
As your advocate, your PCP will connect you to the right specialist for your specific need and then ensure that specialist understands your medical history and health goals.
After all, your primary care doctor is your lifelong health partner. Working with you, and your specialists if needed, a PCP can help you set and achieve goals that keep you active and on track with your health. •
Putting Patients in the Driver’s Seat
Health care technologies are always evolving. At Houston Methodist, we continuously redefine your experience to mirror the latest innovations that enhance your comfort and increase your control.
“We have spent years obsessively focused on the patients we’re serving. We have strategically built processes to meet our patients’ needs — identifying where care is needed and how easily they can access and manage that care, “ said Dr. Nicholas Desai, chief medical officer, chief operations officer and chief quality officer at Houston Methodist Cypress.
Our goal is to ensure that all aspects of health care are easily accessible. That’s why we’ve made it so that you can use your smartphone for almost everything, whether it’s planning your doctor appointments or choosing how we communicate with you. With the tap of your finger you can schedule visits, complete pre-appointment to-dos, check in for hospital visits, receive after-care instructions and ask questions. And, if you’re staying in the hospital, you can use your phone to connect with a variety of innovations on campus, including ordering food from one of our many on-site convenient dining options.

Innovations That Improve Your Care
At Houston Methodist Cypress Hospital, innovation is more than just a buzzword. The latest technology is used throughout the hospital for one simple reason: to make your experience better and easier to navigate. Whether it’s in primary, specialty or hospital care, we seek out technology to achieve better outcomes for you and your family. This patient-focused approach is a longstanding part of Houston Methodist’s mission and is at the center of everything we do.
“We challenged ourselves to elevate the patient experience by incorporating innovative tools into the extraordinary care provided by Houston Methodist,” explained Dr. Nicholas Desai, chief medical officer, chief operations officer and chief quality officer at Houston Methodist Cypress. “While the technology itself is impressive, our goal is to increase connectivity and transparency for patients.”
At Houston Methodist Cypress, we invested — and will continue to invest — in technology that creates a more personalized health care experience, giving patients more say and better visibility into their overall health and well-being.
Better sleep and proactive attention.
Patients wear monitors that let your care team observe your heartbeat, blood pressure and other vitals in real time from the nurses’ station. This means you and your loved ones can rest, and your care team will only disturb you if necessary.
When you enter our hospital, you will experience the innovation that backs your care,” said Caroline Mascarenhas, chief nursing officer at Houston Methodist Cypress. “Every room is equipped with advanced technology designed to give you control of your surroundings, while seamlessly enhancing your care through connectivity with our expert team.”
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY AT YOUR FINGERTIPS
Advanced technologies offer patients and providers alike new, convenient options that allow everyone to focus on what’s most important: The person-to-person interactions that ultimately result in exceptional patient outcomes and outstanding patient care.
All Houston Methodist hospitals are equipped with this type of advanced, patient-focused technology. The only difference is that Houston Methodist Cypress was built with infrastructure in place to allow the adoption of new technology at a faster pace, as well as with an eye to future change — both in terms of our patients’ needs and the evolution of the health care landscape — all while staying true to our promise of leading medicine. •

More control over your surroundings.
