TO BE FRANK

St. Bonaventure forward Frank Mitchell has been one of the most productive players in the country this season.

With 10 double-doubles on the season, Mitchell leads the Atlantic 10 as of Monday (Jan. 19).

Mitchell is averaging 10.4 rebounds per game, which leads all players in the Atlantic 10 conference and ranks 13th nationally. He ranks 12th in the nation with 187 total rebounds.

A remarkable number of Mitchell’s rebounds have come on the offensive end. His 86 total offensive rebounds (4.78 per game) lead all of Division I.

Mitchell has tallied double-digit offensive rebounds two games this season, with a season-best 11 against Colgate (Dec. 10) and 10 vs. Ohio (Dec. 13).

Mitchell’s total rebounding percentage of 18.7 and offensive rebounding percentage of 16.7 would both be school records if the season ended today, with the latter being the highest in school history by 3.7 percentage points.

Mitchell is no stranger to the top of the national rebounding leaderboards. In 2023-24 with Canisius, he averaged 11.6 rebounds per game, the fourth-most in Division I.

In the scoring column, Mitchell has scored in double figures in 17 of 18 games this season. He has scored 20-or-more points in six games this season, and in five of his last seven.

DASONTE DELIVERS

Dasonte Bowen has been an extremely effective playmaker this season, averaging 4.6 assists per game over the course of the season, and 5.4 assists per game in Atlantic 10 play. Both marks rank third in the conference. He has recorded three-or-more assists in 16-of-18 games this season.

Over St. Bonaventure’s two-game road swing in Philadelphia, Bowen combined for 18 assists and just one turnover.

Bowen’s playmaking prowess was on full display in Wednesday (Jan. 14) night’s game against Saint Joseph’s. The redshirt junior posted eight assists and just one turnover in the loss.

Then, on Saturday (Jan. 17) at La Salle, Bowen recorded 10 assists and no turnovers. With 12 points, he became the first SBU player to record a pointsassist double-double since Kyrell Luc did so against Xavier in 2023 (Jan. 4).

Bowen's assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.32 ranks 23rd in the nation as of Monday (Jan. 19). He also leads the Atlantic 10 conference among players averaging 3.0 assists per game or more.

The Boston native has undergone a significant uptick in offensive efficiency over the course of the season. After shooting just 27.1 percent from the field in his first six games, Bowen is 45-for-98 (45.9 percent) in his last 12 games, reaching double figures in nine games over that span.

Through 18 games, Bowen has set career-highs in points (164), assists (83) and rebounds (58) in a season.

COUNT ON CAYDEN

Cayden Charles has been pivotal to the Bonnies’ offense in conference play.

The 6-foot-3 guard is averaging 14.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 49.1 percent (26-for-53) from the field in St. Bonaventure’s four Atlantic 10 games.

On Wednesday at Saint Joseph’s, Charles scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. He made a career-best-tying three triples. All 17 of Charles’ points

came in the second half, leading an 18-point swing for the Bonnies that gave the team its first lead of the game.

Inversely, Charles scored a team-best tying 11 points in the first half of Saturday’s game at La Salle but went scoreless in the second half. The senior has reached double figures in six consecutive games, tallying at least six rebounds in all-but-one game during that span.

DANIEL FROM DEEP

Forward Daniel Egbuniwe caught fire from long range in the second half of Saturday’s game at La Salle. In the last nine minutes of play, he scored 16 of St. Bonaventure’s final 23 points.

Egbuniwe scored a season-best 19 total points on the afternoon, shooting 7-for12 from the field and 5-for-8 from three-point range.

The Memphis, Tenn. native is leading the Bonnies in three-point percentage this season, shooting 42.2 percent (27-for-64).

IN THE RANKINGS

In the latest NET rankings published by the NCAA on Monday (Jan. 19), the Bonnies ranked 147th. In TeamRankings.com’s RPI rankings, St. Bonaventure was ranked 110th in the country.

The Bonnies ranked 109th in FaktorSports’ KPI rating, a metric used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Barr-Buday averaged 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 70.0 percent from the floor across two games last week, helping the Bonnies to a win over Saint Joseph’s last Wednesday night.

In Wednesday’s win over the Hawks, Barr-Buday tallied six points and six rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.

Sunday at Fordham, she chipped in nine points, three rebounds and two assists in 18 minutes.

For the year, Barr-Buday is averaging 5.2 points and 2.1 rebounds in just 9.7 minutes per game while shooting over 57 percent from the floor.

Mitchell averaged 24.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in a pair of games last week.

At La Salle on Saturday, he posted 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the floor, pulling down seven rebounds with four assists and two steals. Earlier in the week at Saint Joseph’s, he tallied 22 points with eight boards and three steals.

For the year, he leads the team at 17.2 ppg and 10.4 rpg.

BONNIES BASELINE

Charles’ Career Perseverance Pays Off

A look at the numbers for Cayden Charles this season might give the impression of a player who was always destined to shine at the Division I level – a recruit brought in to be a top scoring option for St. Bonaventure.

True enough, Charles posts nearly 13 points per game, has reached double figures in 13 of 17 games, including every Atlantic 10 contest, and 20 or more points twice.

But numbers don’t always tell the entire story.

Coming out of Allatoona High School in suburban Atlanta, Charles didn’t get many D-I looks and even fewer offers. Instead, he

landed at Division II North Georgia.

And, at first anyway, he found himself on North Georgia’s bench. For the first nine games of his collegiate career, he didn’t see the court.

Rather than be deterred, Charles went to work.

He focused on the weaknesses in his game, how to improve, and where he could make an impact for his team.

“I learned how to compete at a high level. Coming from high school, going D-II is not something you dream of, but once I got there, I realized what the competition was like and learned how to expand my game,” Charles said. “I learned that it’s not just about scoring, I had to impact the game in other ways.”

Charles became an all-around player for the Nighthawks, a lockdown defender and a beast on the boards. The scoring ability came secondary in his development as a college player.

He was key to powerhouse North Georgia squads that made deep runs in the NCAA Division II national tournament. In 2024, he earned Most Valuable Player honors in the D-II Southeast Regional and led the squad to the Elite Eight while posting 14.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest.

By the time his junior season went in the books, he’d logged 972 points along with 488 rebounds and 132 assists.

“I was really challenged to work harder, to understand the game better,” he said. “My freshman year, I just really focused on defense and rebounds.”

At the conclusion of last season, following a 24-point, 12-rebound effort in North Georgia’s final postseason contest, Charles made the choice to take one last opportunity to chase the Division I dream.

BONNIES BASELINE

“It would have been safe to stay at North Georgia, close to home, family there,” he said. “It was time to leave my comfort zone.”

That meant a journey to the transfer portal, and a quick realization that part of today’s collegiate athletics landscape isn’t quite as glamorous as some might think.

“I hated the transfer portal. It’s a lot of chaos. It’s not fun,” he said. “It’s like being unemployed. You don’t know where you’re going to go or what your role is going to be.”

After about six weeks of searching, taking calls from potential landing spots and considering his options, Charles nearly disregarded the opportunity to land at St. Bonaventure.

“I was about to be done with it when Woj called me. I actually blew him off when he called me. I didn’t realize who he was,” he says with a laugh. “Once I figured out who it was, I was excited.”

His spot at St. Bonaventure secured, his place in the starting lineup was anything but, however.

When the Bonnies officially signed Charles in June, he became the final player to join the 2025-26 roster.

For some followers of the program, his signing was a bit of an afterthought behind more buzzworthy signings.

Charles quickly worked his way into the equation for the Bonnies by turning the heads of the coaching staff during preseason practices and workouts. By the time the season-opener rolled around, he had earned a place in the starting lineup.

“Cayden is a team-first player with a relentless motor,” Bonnies head coach Mark Schmidt said. “He’s a physical, attacking wing who can do a little bit of everything well. He's a terrific rebounder and a veteran player with an ability to get downhill on offense.”

“This is a great space,” Charles said of his new home in Western New York. "I was already used to the small college campus environment. Coach Schmidt, he’s a hall of fame coach. He teaches the game and every day I learn more about the game. You really learn how to be the student of the game.”

Charles wasted little time making an impact. He dropped 15 points in his Bonnies debut to help power a win over Bradley, starting a stretch of five straight games of double-figure scoring to begin his D-I tenure.

In a November win over Siena, he surpassed the 1,000-point scoring plateau for his collegiate career – a far cry from a player who couldn’t crack the lineup during the first two months in the Division II ranks.

Though the stage is now bigger, his playing style remains the same as he continues to do the little things to help his new team.

He has registered three double-doubles and stands behind only big man Frank Mitchell in rebounding among Bona players.

While the numbers he’s producing now might not tell the story of the struggle and work it took to get to this point, they surely underscore how that work has paid off over the last four years.

“To hit that milestone (of scoring 1,000 points) just shows the progress I’ve made,” he said. “There’s always an added chip on my shoulder, but I have to be disciplined and stick to what got me here.”
