According to the Zillow Home Value Index, the median value of homes in the United States increased dramatically between 2019 and 2024. Data from the online real estate listing service indicates the median value of a home in the U.S. in August 2019 was $243,386.Just half a decade later, that value had risen to $361,282, marking a 67 percent increase in median home value over that time. Housing prices have experienced an even greater uptick in Canada, where data from the Canadian Real Estate Association indicates that the average selling price of homes sold in August 2024 was $717,800 CAD ($529,427.75 USD), a roughly 73 percent increase since August 2019, when the average homes sold in Canada went for $522,700 ($385,527.84 USD). The spike in housing costs has greatly outpaced inflation. In fact, according to a 2024 report from the real estate data firm Clever, if home prices had increased at the same rate as inflation since 1963, the median price of a home in the U.S. would be $177,511, which is less than half the median value reported by Zillow in August 2024.
Level: Advanced Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

He filled in as a teacher in the Welding program for part of the school year. “I started on my birthday, February 18th in 2019. I had to laugh, I’ve worked in power plants for 32 years and let’s just say, we didn’t get any snow days there! My first day teaching was a snow day. I hadn’t had a snow day since 1979!” When asked what his favorite part of his job was, his answer was, “ at’s hard to answer. It really wasn’t a job to me. It was the most rewarding opportunity I have ever had the pleasure of doing. So, I guess I would say it would be having the opportunity to pass on my life’s lessons to anyone who would listen. My passion has always been in welding, but my goal was to teach kids to be employable first and welding second. I do miss being part of something bigger than myself. It is the best job I have ever had. I am very honored to have received this and all I can say is from the heart, thank you for this wonderful opportunity to work with some of the most caring and dedicated people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with.”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Whenever I’m having a conversation with my friends or talking to my mom, our cat “Jasper” stands right in the middle of our group and meows. If we stop talking, he stops meowing. What’s going on? Is my cat trying to talk? -- Victoria L., Canton, Massachusetts
DEAR VICTORIA: Sort of! Although it’s probably because Jasper sees a bunch of humans gathered together, all of whom have thumbs and can therefore open a bag of treats for him.
Cats vocalize with humans more than they do with other cats. Much more. Researchers (and owners) have figured out that they meow at us a lot because it prompts us to give them food, treats and snuggles -- even though we have a harder time understanding cats’ meows than other animal noises. They’re very perceptive, these housecats, with not much to distract them from observing us all the time (especially since so many of us work from home these days).
They’ve figured out our daily schedule better than we have. I have a cat who hops on my lap and starts headbutting my smartphone exactly at bedtime. He gets his little snack, and I get eight proper hours of sleep. And if I get home late? Oh, the silent treatment I receive. It’s the complete opposite of meowing, and just as manipulative.
Like you, I’d like to think that Jasper is just trying to get in on the excited conversation going on all around him. That could be the case. It could also be Jasper’s realization that big gatherings of humans usually involve food ... and if he stays underfoot, some of that deliciousness will come his way.

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS
is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.
• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.
• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.
• We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

Another great fair week in Hemlock this year. Thank you to all who run the fair. My family had a wonderful time. Also a shout out to the 4-H Youth. It was great to see the animals and how well taken care of these animals were. You all did an amazing job. Can’t
Finishing up at Canandaigua Wegmans self-checkout, I found both my credit card and my Shoppers Card were not in my purse. When I told the attendant I had cash, she directed me to the Service desk. There I was asked my name, where upon I was handed both of my cards. They had fallen out of my purse in the parking lot. (Note to self - ALWAYS ZIP YOUR PURSE.) A very good Samaritan had brought them into the store. Whoever you are - a million thanks.
I was at a local Tops grocery store recently. I use the bus. Had several heavy bags in the rain that day. A stranger with a dark blue van asked if I needed a lift. Went out of her way to get me back home.
Be a good role model. Children learn many behaviors from watching and listening to their parents. Children who see Mom and Dad bouncing back from setbacks and exhibiting a willingness to give things another try are more likely to do the same.
You used the center turning lane as a passing lane. I raged out and called you a bad name. You responded in kind. I should have let it go. I am sorry.
Over the past 6 months, the price of groceries has increased exponentially. A 12 oz bag of coffee cost 4 dollars more. A pound of Angus beef increased from $7.50 to $10.00. Produce is expected to increase by 40 percent because there are no longer workers to pick the crops. Times are hard and they will only become worse.
It is great that you walk your dogs, it is good for both of you. What isn’t great is that you don’t pick up after them. And there are some that do pick up, but decide it is ok to leave the little bag on a lawn or the sidewalk. PICK UP the bag and take it home, or find a dumpster nearby, usually there are plenty of them. It is not right that you leave your mess for others to take care of!

Hilda Atkinson Secore
September 26, 2025
Hilda Atkinson Secore, a devoted mother, stepmother, grandmother, and hardworking member of her community, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the Batavia Memorial Hospital, at the age
Born on January 15, 1935, Hilda (Rosie) spent her life in Western New York, where she built a legacy of love, resilience, and quiet strength. She was the beloved wife of the late Delore Secore, who passed in 1981,and later shared 19 loving years with her common-law husband,Jerry Shaw, who passed in 2005.Hilda,beloved daughter of Roy and Anna ( errien) Atkinson, was born in Standish,New York, the youngest of five children and the cherished baby of the family. She was predeceased by her siblings, Floyd, Maynard, and Hector Atkinson, and Mildred Canning, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Hilda attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in Bunker Hill, New York, just down the road from her family’s farm. Hilda was the proud mother of Richard (Kim) Secore and Holly Secore of Medina, Christine Jankowski (deceased), and Kevin (Linda) Secore of Lyndonville. She was also a caring stepmother to Gary, Ralph (Joe), Robert, Susie, and Linda. She was a loving grandmother to 12 grandchildren, but was predeceased by two beloved grandchildren, Gena Secore and Braedon Sandstrom, whose memories remained close to her heart, and a proud greatgrandmother to many. Her family was her greatest joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
Hilda dedicated much of her career to manufacturing, working for many years at the Southland plant in Barker, NY, and Niagara Foods in Middleport,NY before finally retiring from Bucolo’s Cold Storage in Burt, NY in her 70s. Her strong work ethic and steady presence left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside her.
The death of a loved is difficult to confront. Emotions are elevated and grief is prominent. which can make it hard to make important decisions. Quite often several people need to come together to make decisions necessary for a family member’s funeral arrangements. There also is a financial component to consider.
According to Lincoln Heritage Life Insurance Company, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $12,000, which may or may not include viewing, burial, transport, casket, and other fees. Surviving family members responsible for planning a funeral may be asked to contribute a portion of these expenses if other arrangements have not already been made, which can exacerbate stressful feelings during an already difficult time.
Funeral pre-planning is a good way for individuals to make a difficult time a little more manageable for their survivors. Funeral homes frequently work hand-in-hand with individuals and families to customize pre-planning packages and facilitate the process.
Hilda never met a person she didn’t like. Her heart was open to everyone, and she had a gift for making people feel seen, heard, and loved. To many, she was a second mom – offering comfort, wisdom, and a place to call home. You never left her house without sharing a meal or raising a glass, most likely a shot of Captain Morgan, served with a twinkle in her eye and a story to tell. Her Canadian accent was as endearing as her laugh, and both could light up a room. Whether you were a neighbor, a friend, or someone she’d just met, Hilda welcomed you as family. Her warmth, generosity, and unforgettable spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Hilda will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her unwavering devotion to family, and the quiet grace with which she lived her life. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who knew her.
Hilda’s greatest loves were her family and animals. Her constant companion, her little “Shadow,” misses her terribly – a testament to the deep bond they shared. She found joy in family gatherings, where laughter flowed as freely as the classic country music she adored. Her heart always belonged to the Adirondacks, and she cherished every trip back home to visit family and friends.
Her best friends and partners in crime, Gail (Jerry) O’Conner and Edna Alexander, shared countless adventures and memories with her. Together, they brought joy, mischief, and unwavering support into each other’s lives.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Hilda’s memory. She would be honored to know that her spirit continues to inspire kindness and care in the world.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Bogan & Tuttle Funeral Home, 226 Pearl St., Medina, NY 14103.

The period surrounding the death of a loved one can be difficult to navigate. Mourning a recently deceased family member or friend can dominate individuals’ thoughts, compromising their ability to devote much time and energy to anything else.
Some people decide to pre-plan their funerals in an effort to ensure their wishes are honored upon their death. Pre-planning also can afford survivors more time to grieve and ensure they won’t need to make hard decisions at a difficult time in their lives. When a deceased individual makes no such plans, family members are tasked with planning the funeral, a process that can be simplified with the help of experienced staff at a nearby funeral home. Funeral homes offer an array of services that can ensure ceremonies honor the life of the deceased and take some of the pressure off that person’s surviving family members.

TIPS TO MANAGE TIME MORE EFFICIENTLY Adjust as necessary.
