People travel far and wide come Thanksgiving weekend. No matter how people choose to travel, many find holiday traveling to be taxing. The motorist group AAA says that roughly 43 million people travel at least 50 miles from home for the Thanksgiving holiday. With so many people flying the friendly skies or on roads or railways, there is a good chance individuals will encounter delays and some frustration. 4 large egg yolks
1 large egg white
1 14-ounce can sweetened
condensed milk
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 partially baked 9-inch pie
crust, chilled

3 large egg whites
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
6 tablespoons sugar

To make the filling: In a medium bowl, beat the egg yolks and egg white until they are very thick and lemoncolored. Stir in the condensed milk, lime juice and salt until well blended. Pour into the chilled pie shell. Refrigerate for several hours to allow the filling to set.
Shortly before serving, make the meringue. Preheat the oven to 425 F. In a large bowl, beat the 3 egg whites with the cream of tartar until they form soft peaks. Gradually beat in the sugar, and continue beating until it is dissolved. By then the meringue should be stiff and glossy. Spread over the filling, being sure to seal the edges well so that the meringue will not shrink.
Bake for 5 to 7 minutes, or until delicately browned. Let cool away from drafts.

The Yorkshire Inn

Behind the modest façade of e Yorkshire Inn on Route 96 in Phelps lies a rare piece of early New York history, one that predates canals, railways, and even the surrounding village itself.
e structure began its life around 1796, when the nation was still defining itself and waves of settlers began pushing into western New York. at year, an unknown builder constructed the two-story brick farmhouse on newly claimed land. At a time when many frontier homes were wood or rough-hewn log structures, the choice to build in brick suggested both confidence and permanence.
In 1824, the home was purchased by Moses Swi , whose family le one of the few visible fingerprints from that era. Legend says Mrs. Swi found the house too small, leading the family to build a second brick residence nearby, as well as another for their children. ese two additional brick homes, still standing east of the Inn, form an unusual trio of early 19th-century structures that trace the Swi family’s growth and the region’s gradual shi from scattered farmland to a budding community.
e farmhouse’s transformation into an inn came with the rise of stagecoach travel in the early 1800s. Roads became more reliable, mail routes more regular, and travelers more frequent. To serve this traffic, a full third floor was added, giving the building the space needed to lodge passengers and stable horses. e Yorkshire Inn emerged from these changes as a key stopover in what would become the village of Unionville. Architectural clues of this stagecoach era are still visible throughout the home.

By 1840, the surrounding area had grown to include mills, shops, a schoolhouse, and a second inn, much of it built on the prosperity that came from proximity to the Erie Canal to the north and the Seneca Turnpike to the south.
e road directly in front of the inn gained national attention in the mid-19th century as a half-mile racecourse for thoroughbreds. e race ran from the east end of Vienna (now Phelps) to the inn’s front door, drawing spectators and stirring concerns from horse owners when early railroad tracks crossed the route. e noise was disruptive enough that Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt himself came to investigate. Lodging at the Yorkshire Inn, he reportedly experienced the disturbances firsthand and ordered the train tracks moved, exemplifying how Phelps shaped one of America’s most influential transportation networks.
e building’s life as a community hub continued well intothe20thcentury.Inthe1940s,ithousedtheYorkInn restaurant, a beloved dining spot for decades. Operated until 1976 by James and Vivian Malone, the restaurant remains a touchstone in local memory.
In 2000, the Latch family purchased the Inn and converted it to its current role as a bed-and-breakfast, preserving the building while giving its rooms fresh life. Renovations created guest suites from former dining areas and restored much of the original character. e continuity of hospitality, from stagecoach travelers to modern day, remains one of Yorkshire Inn’s defining threads.
In 2021, the Inn began a new chapter under the ownership of Micah Sherman, a high-end caterer, and Darcy DiPane, a certified dietician, who relocated from Chicago in search of both family connection and a new venture. eir first encounter with the building

was immediate and decisive. When they first walked into the Inn, Micah “knew immediately it was the right place,” and Darcy says, “ e historical charm and unique property spoke to us. We could envision creating a oneof-a-kind event space inside the house and across its three-acre property.”
eir stewardship comes with a strong sense of responsibility to the building’s past. Micah says, “It’s an honor to continue the legacy of this property,” echoing the instinct of every owner who has preserved the structure rather than replacing it.
e couple’s experiences hosting guests have deepened their connection to the building’s long history. Among their favorites is welcoming a NASA astronaut who shared stories of life in space and meeting an 82-yearold woman who lived in the inn as a child. Darcy says, “Moments like these remind us why we do this.” Such moments reinforce the building’s role not just as lodging, but as a keeper of memories that span generations.
Darcy, who volunteers on the Phelps Library Board and the Business Development & Tourism Council, says Phelps is such a welcoming community and they love being part of the community. Annual cra sales, small gatherings, and future plans for on-site events help weave the historic property into the fabric of present-day Phelps.
Today,theYorkshireInnstandsasoneoftheregion’smost distinctive links between past and present. Its brick walls havebornewitnesstosettlement-erafarming,stagecoach routes, horse racing, railroad expansion, beloved dining traditions, and now modern hospitality. In a landscape where many early buildings have disappeared, the Inn remains a rare survivor and is a place where history is not simply preserved, but lived in.

Seeking care for visual problems and changing driving habits when necessary can help people stay safe on the road.

Participate in local events: Local events like holiday bazaars and town festivals provide great chances for business owners to communicate directly with new and existing customers. Take advantage of the chance to set up a booth at such events, and make a concerted effort to reach out to consumers who stop by the booth. The customer feedback experts at Apptentive found that 97 percent of consumers are somewhat likely to become more loyal to a company that implements their feedback. Setting up a booth at a bazaar or festival provides a great chance to solicit feedback that businesses can then implement to retain more customers.
Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees.

Arguably one of the most challenging - and often frustrating - components about puppyhood is training the dog to use the outdoors for bathroom needs. It’s easy to underestimate the time involved in housebreaking a puppy. The Humane Society of America says puppies typically can control their bladders for one hour for every month of age. That means if the dog is three months old, he can hold it for about three hours.

What’s the best age to spay or neuter a dog?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When should I get my purebred puppy spayed? “Macy” is a rambunctious, 6-month-old Bernese, and I’m getting conflicting information from friends and my vet. My friends say that she should go through one or two heat cycles before I get her fixed.The vet wants it done right away. Who’s right? -- Carol H., via email
DEAR CAROL: Oh, wow. This is quite a topic of conversation in my pet circles, as I’m sure it is with your fellow pet owners. I don’t think anyone is going to be super happy with my answer, because I’m not going to give you a definitive age at which puppies should be spayed or neutered. Instead, I’m going to punt this to the American Kennel Club (AKC), which has a great article on why recommended ages differ: www. akc.org/expert-advice/vets-corner/neutering-spaying-rightage-dog.
With that said, I commend you on making the decision to spay your puppy. Among owners of purebred dogs, deciding if and when to “fix” them is sometimes a tough choice. However, if an owner does not intend to breed their dog (responsibly, of course), spaying or neutering can curb some undesired behaviors and prevent some health problems.
If you decide to spay Macy after her first or second heat, wait until the heat cycle has completed before undergoing the procedure. This will reduce the possibility of excessive bleeding. Also, keep her under your control during her heat cycle -- indoors unless you’re walking her. When you take her for walks, stay next to her and keep her on a strong leash. It will amaze you how many dogs become intensely interested in Macy as you pass by. Keep your distance from all of them during this period.

House Nunmbers & Lighting
As a delivery person--often at night-- I see a great need for better lighting and placement of visible house/apartment numbers! PLEASE, for your own safety and that of others, put an easily visible address number on your house. It could be lifesaving if emergency folks are called. If you expect a delivery of food, you would want it delivered promptly and in the correct location. Do not blame the service if your house or apartment lacks a number. When several lack numbers even a flashlight does not help.
Also, PLEASE provide better lighting; there are many lowcost options for entrances & inner foyers. If you expect delivery of a good hot meal, make sure your dwelling has adequate lighting! Paths with bikes, ladders, toys, etc. in the dark do not help. We do all we can to ensure prompt & satisfactory delivery. Please consider taking your part in keeping deliveries safer with visible address numbers and helpful lighting. Thank you!
Restaurant Nickel and Diming
My wife and I and another couple went out to eat on Saturday night. The food was great and the bill with tip was not bad. The only bad spot was they charged us $3.50 for another helping of bread. With their prices for dinner, why do restaurants always nickel and dime you? We will not be back. Breakfast restaurants have extra charges too (if you want raisins with your oatmeal, they charge 25¢ more for the meal). Why for such little extras?

Pain Persists Around Puncture Site After Medical Procedure
DEAR DR. ROACH: Nine days ago, I had a medical procedure under general anesthesia. One of the lines was put in the artery in my left wrist. Aside from deep bruising that went halfway up my forearm, it seems that there is some nerve damage. I have constant pain from my thumb, through my wrist, and up to about 3 inches on my arm. Overnight, the pain becomes intense and radiates all the way up to my shoulder.
Tylenol and an arthritis sleeve only provide minimum relief. Should I request to see a neurologist, or is there another type of doctor to seek out for a diagnosis? This has become life-altering, and I’m hoping it will eventually be healed. -- B.F.
ANSWER: I suspect that the bruising on your forearm was caused by bleeding from the puncture site of the artery in your wrist. (This type of line is used to measure blood pressure accurately and instantaneously.) The hematoma (blood collection) inside the wrist might be compressing the median nerve in your carpal tunnel, which causes a neuropathy very much like carpal tunnel syndrome.
If I am right, then the condition should improve as your body absorbs the blood, which takes pressure off the nerve. However, there are case reports of permanent damage to the nerve from complications of an arterial puncture. In general, if the nerve compression is serious enough to cause weakness, it needs to be acted upon urgently.
The doctors who performed your procedure need to know about this complication, and a neurologist is exactly the right person to see. A simple nerve test could confirm my suspicion or disprove it by finding a different cause if your symptoms persist.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m an active 60-year-old who took a soccer ball to the groin some time back.After a few months, I noticed a change in my sexual organ. Narrowing and bending of my organ developed, and it seems to be getting worse.
My general doctor seems to think it’s Peyronie’s disease. After researching this, I started taking vitamin E and COq10 supplements. I scheduled a urologist exam but was hoping for some insight on this. -- G.

ANSWER: I suspect your general doctor is correct, and an evaluation by a urologist is certainly indicated. Peyronie’s disease is often triggered by trauma in a person who is genetically susceptible to the condition. (Your trauma was very clear, but it isn’t always clear in everyone what the trauma might have been.)
The diagnosis is made by an examination showing a bend in the penis, along with plaque that can be felt during an examination in most cases. Some men, but not all, will have pain.
In men who are in the active phase of the disease (where the curvature is getting worse), urologists will often prescribe pentoxifylline for three to six months in hopes of stabilizing the condition and preventing the curve from worsening.
Vitamin E was not found to be superior to a placebo treatment. CoQ10 was found to have a benefit in a small trial, and since it is very safe, this was a reasonable treatment for you to try.
Depending on your symptoms and degree of curvature, there are several options for treatment. Medication can be injected directly into the penis; men treated with this were found to have about a 34% improvement in curvature. Traction therapy is also frequently used.
In men with more severe disease that does not respond to the previous options,surgical treatment can be considered. This should be done in men whose sexual function is affected by the disease and in cases where medical treatments have failed to improve their symptoms adequately.
All too frequently we seniors don’t ask for help when we need it, using as an excuse that others need it more. Sound familiar?
Our local senior center decided to host a free holiday dinner a few weeks before Christmas this year. It was to be a full turkey dinner, with several courses, a sit-down affair with table service from the Community Club at the high school.They needed to limit it to 100 people, and advance signup was required. Color them amazed when a full week after the announcement, there were still well over 50 dinner slots available.
Staff starting manning the phones,calling senior center members to ask if they’d heard about the dinner.Yes, people had heard.Yes, it sounded lovely. But no, they wouldn’t be signing up for it. Other people, many stated, needed the free dinner more.
This did not surprise me. After all the times I’ve talked to seniors around me about how it was OK for them to go to the food bank, that it was OK to ask for help -- no, I wasn’t shocked that many were turning down a free holiday dinner at the senior center.
Does this describe you? Someone who would turn down free things, saying that others might need it more?
There’s more to it when we decline help, other reasons, if we’re going to be honest with ourselves. Mostly we fear loss of independence. Somehow we equate getting help at the food bank -- or a free turkey dinner -- with not being able to take care of ourselves, thus possibly inviting scrutiny from others who might start questioning our ability to manage our lives.
I was not surprised when the senior center changed their promotion for the free dinner to say they would welcome donations, and the rest of the slots filled up.
Clean the house. A dirty home that is full of clutter will not make the best impression on appraisers. Dirty homes may be vulnerable to insect infestations that can lead to structural problems with the home. While a dirty home is not necessarily an indicator of infestations or a reflection of a home’s value, a clean home will create a stronger first impression with the appraiser.

Determine how much time you spend on common tasks. Take a day to calculate how much time you’re devoting to certain parts of your workday. For example, is email correspondence bogging you down for several hours? Once you have a clearer picture of how you are spending your time, you can develop an effective plan to maximize your work hours.
GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
