Once Upon a Time

by Zach Weeks W hen I was approached and asked if I would like to write a small article, I thought of course, and it seemed like a no-brainer to write about worship as I play guitar on my church’s worship team. I honestly thought, well, that would be an easy subject for me; I do it week in and week out, and I have a firm grasp on what worship is. That thought couldn’t have been further from the truth. As I started to read and search out what true worship is, I realized maybe I have no clue what true worship is.

How can I play on a worship team and not be able to explain what worship is? Worship is not just the thing we all do before the sermon. Worship isn’t the song that gets us excited and makes us want to jump. It’s not the song that gives us goosebumps and makes us emotional, it’s not the lights, and it’s not an altar call. Worship is love. I know that’s extremely simple, but that is what I have realized worship is: our love represented to God in whatever we do.

Worship has a singular focus, and that focus is God. I love in 1 Chronicles 16 where David gives 10 newly appointed ministers instruments and it says they all worshipped to the Lord. It doesn’t say they had lights or a stage or even knew how to play an instrument, but what they did have were hearts for the Lord, and what they did know was how to worship the King.

Worship doesn’t come in a tempo and it doesn’t come in key, but worship comes in the form of love for our God. I know sometimes it can be easy—at least it can for me—to get caught up in our busy schedules and forget to just let Jesus know we love Him. I don’t go a day without telling my wife or my kids that I love them, but I will often go a day without just simply telling God, “I love You.” God sent His Son to die a horrible death on the cross, and we forget some days to just stop and say, “Lord, I love You and thank You for Your great sacrifice.” Worship is love. The beautiful thing about worship is it comes in many expressions, and we can show our love for God at any and all moments of our life. God is everywhere; therefore, worship is everywhere. This all started with the question of what worship is to me, and I came up with multiple answers: it is a weapon, it is my calling, it is part of my identity, but most importantly, worship is love.
