Letter from Rolinda
We have much to celebrate at Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland! It has been a wonderful year filled with growth and adventure for our Girl Scouts in areas of STEM, outdoors, entrepreneurship, and life skills. The girls are so inspirational when I’ve listened to their aspirations relating to Girl Scout programs, participation at camp, higher awards, career development, and beyond. In this issue, you will see how the girls have taken action to reach their goals and enjoyed their Girl Scout adventure.
We will soon transition to a new membership year which gives us a great opportunity to celebrate the dedication and work of our volunteers. Volunteer award nominations are open through September 15. I encourage you to reflect on the admirable work done this year and lift up those around you who have given so much to support the girls. I look forward to celebrating with you during the Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition event on Saturday, November 1. During the Annual Meeting, Helen Wimsatt will be passing the gavel to our incoming Board Chair who will be elected at that time. Helen has given six years of volunteer service as Board Chair. It has been an honor to serve the girls alongside Helen as she has championed Girl Scouting in the present and invested for the future.
The Council and donors continue to invest in the girls through programming, higher awards, scholarships, financial assistance, and the addition of the Heartland Activity Center to name a few areas highlighted in this issue. I invite you to make that investment in lives of our Girl Scouts through your time, talent and treasure.
For the girls,

Rolinda Sample, CEO

The Gold Award Scholarship is $2,500. To apply, you must have earned the Gold Award prior to the application deadline.

Each year, applications will be considered for awards for one-year non-recurring college scholarships. Highest Awards Project Fund
The Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards are the highest honors you can earn in Girl Scouts.
All three awards give you the chance to do big things while working on an issue you care about. Once you've completed your project, you'll have made a bold, sustainable impact on the world —and you'll have put in some serious work.
To assist in your journey towards earning your highest award, the council is offering troops and individuals working on their Highest Awards the opportunity to apply for funds towards their efforts. To qualify for funds, your Silver or Gold Award project proposal needs to have been submitted and approved by the committee. Bronze Awards do not need pre-approval. Applications for funds are open from August 1 to December 15. The priority deadline to apply is September 30. From there, if additional funding is left, the second deadline is December 15. Fill out the application on our website at www.kansasgirlscouts.org/highestawards.
Campbell Schober
GSUSA Gold Award Scholar
We are proud to announce that Campbell has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious 2025 GSUSA Gold Award Scholarship for her remarkable Gold Award project, “Wild Bee Habitats.” This national honor recognizes Gold Award Girl Scouts who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through projects that tackle issues of national and global significance with measurable and sustainable impact.
Campbell’s project addresses the critical issue of wild bee population decline—an alarming trend that has escalated over the past 30 years. Wild bees, especially mason bees, are essential pollinators for crops around the world. Without them, our global food supply is at risk. Her project explored root causes like habitat destruction, pesticide use, pollution, and climate change, and she worked to empower others to be part of the solution.
Through a wide-reaching education and advocacy campaign, Campbell engaged multiple audiences
including: elementary students, international students at her school, adults in her community, and the general public.
Campbell didn’t just teach others— she led from start to finish. She researched, prepared materials, organized presentations, and fielded questions with confidence and clarity. Her leadership and passion were especially impactful in reaching students from countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Serbia, Poland, Spain, Burma, and several African nations.
Thanks to Campbell’s efforts, hundreds of bee habitats are now being created in Kansas—and potentially far beyond. Her work serves as a powerful example of Girl Scouting in action.
Campbell is attending Kansas State University, where she’s pursuing a major in nursing and a minor in German. A passionate traveler and lover of European culture, Campbell has already visited the continent twice—and she’s just getting started.

Most recently, she returned from an exciting three-week journey through Portugal, Spain, and France. The experience only fueled her dream of becoming a traveling nurse, allowing her to combine her love of healthcare with her desire to explore the world.
With a strong academic foundation and an adventurous spirit, Campbell is well on her way to making a difference—both at home and abroad.
Ready to go for the Bronze, Silver, or Gold Award?
What types of leadership can you explore?
Kansas Heartland Scholars

Savannah Thompkins
A dedicated Girl Scout for 13 years, and a passionate advocate for sun safety, Savannah has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment both within her community and through her Girl Scout journey.
Savannah’s achievements are numerous. She is the recipient of the Sandy Remsberg Education Scholarship, and the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland Gold Award Scholarship sponsored by Healthy Blue. Savannah’s Gold Award project, a poignant initiative honoring her older brother Tyler, a cancer survivor, focused on melanoma awareness. By setting up a sunscreen station
Sandy Remsberg Education Scholarship Recipients

Gracie Smith
Gracie is a remarkable young woman who has spent 12 years in Girl Scouts, making a lasting impact on her community and paving the way for a future dedicated to animals and nature. She earned her Silver Award which focused on the Paws and Claws Pet Pantry and has been a consistent participant as an Elite Entrepreneur through the annual product programs. As a Girl Scout, she has completed many community service hours including volunteering at her local nursing home, creating care packages for members of the military, and completing the Cadette Outdoor Journey Take Action Project focused on post-flood cleanup at Camp Double E, just to name a few. Graduating a year early from high school, Gracie continues to develop her love for nature and animals by attending Kansas State University to become a veterinarian, with an undergraduate degree in wildlife biology. Gracie believes Girl Scouts helped her to be courageous and stand up for her ideals and to become the best version of herself.

at Starwoods Girl Scout Center, she not only provided a practical solution for sun safety but also educated her community on the importance of protecting skin from harmful UV rays.
Currently a student at Butler Community College, Savannah is focused on her studies with the goal of advancing to a four-year college to pursue a pre-med degree, working toward a career in medical school. Throughout her Girl Scout years, Savannah has participated in the product programs annually, cherishing the memories and skills gained from her experiences. She credits Girl Scouts for shaping her character and giving her the tools to make a difference.
Camryn Spafford
Camyrn has been an active Girl Scout for 12 years proudly earning her Bronze and Silver Awards. Among her many achievements, Camryn has earned the My Promise, My Faith Award multiple times, reflecting her deep values and connection to the Girl Scout Promise and Law. She was also recognized with the Community Service Bar in 2021 and received the Safety Award in both 2018 and 2022—testaments to her reliability and sense of responsibility. Looking ahead, Camryn plans to pursue a degree in agriculture at Oklahoma State University. Her goal is to build a career in the livestock industry, where she hopes to develop real-world solutions to help meet the needs of society. She is passionate about making a positive impact—not just in her field, but in the world around her. As she reflects on her journey, Camryn is reminded of a line from the Girl Scout Promise that has guided her path: "to serve God and my country." For her, these words are more than a promise—they are a way of life.
Sandy Remsberg Destinations Experience Scholarship

Brenlyn Richmond Brenlyn is the first Girl Scout to be awarded a Sandy Remsberg Destinations Experience Scholarship. This scholarship is designed to help Girl Scouts realize their dream of exploration and Brenlyn had the opportunity to do just that with her adventure to Iceland in July where she explored the country’s beauty, discovered new places, and met amazing people. As a member of Girl Scouts for 10 years, she has earned her Silver and Bronze awards, completed multiple Journeys, and has participated in many product programs throughout the years, qualifying as an Elite Entrepreneur year over year. Her time as a Girl Scout has helped Brenlyn learn money management and financial literacy that she feels will benefit her in the future. Passionate about helping others, Brenlyn plans to pursue a career in Art Therapy, combining her love for creativity with her desire to make a positive impact.

Summer Camp

Council programming is available in Outside the Guide

Have you seen an interesting event that you wished was hosted closer to you? Outside the Guide is the solution! Volunteers in Service Units 70 through 86 (that’s anyone outside of Sedgwick County!) can collaborate with a council staff member to determine the best topic, date, and venue for your community and help us to promote the opportunity to ensure we meet minimum event size requirements. Council staff bring all the materials and lead the activities! Volunteers attend the day of the event to help as chaperones and extra hands to make the experience great! Outside the Guide events are a great option for Troop Leaders or Service Unit Volunteers that are new to hosting events and would like to do one (or several!) together before trying their hand as an event coordinator. We have a wide variety of ready-planned youth events ready to go and can discuss options for customizing topics to meet your needs. Minimum event size: 15 youth, plus chaperones to meet youth-to-adult ratio.
New! Volunteer training is now available in Outside the Guide to be delivered in your community through collaboration with a council staff member and a local training facilitator. Course options include: First Aid, CPR, and AED, Youth Mental Health First Aid, and Outdoor Leadership. Minimum course size: 4 adult volunteers.

Tall Tales
Do you ever wonder if all those stories you have heard, or the videos you watch online of kids doing crazy things are real?!? Have you ever wanted to test it? See if you can duplicate it? Or see what really happens? We will spend the day doing experiments to bust (or prove!) tall tales.
In-SPA-Ration
Feel fresh, free, and FABULOUS as you reflect on your inner beauty. Experience a natural beauty spa that will leave you relaxed, renewed and ready to shine. Inspire creativity through crafts and teamwork activities and share a little sparkle where ever you go.
Creation Station
Your only limitation is your imagination for Creation Station! You can create a house for animals, a masterpiece for your wall, or something cool that your favorite adult will love! We’ll let our imaginations run wild to create whatever motivates us that day.
Bigfoot’s Playground
We share the outdoors with many creatures: from cute and cuddly kittens to big, hairy things like Bigfoot! The world is full of mystery. Is Bigfoot real or legend? Join us for an exploration of the outdoors as we learn and practice the principles of Leave No Trace.
First Aid, CPR, and AED for Teens
Teens can be certified for First Aid, CPR, and AED; this course can be taught in the same blended learning style we offer for adult volunteers for teens or as a 6-hour in-person course. To be successful in either course style, the teen must be motivated and developmentally ready for the course topics.
Lab Rats
Choose your own STEM adventure! Design a car and make something that lights up, get digital by practicing being a citizen scientist, make a field journal and map critters in your area, build earthquake resistant structures, or learn about how oil and water work together.
Adventure
Are you ready to step out of your comfort zone? Every Adventure event is a different combination of experiences that allows Girl Scouts to progress from newbie to master in the adventure activities available at the venue. Will we aim for a bulls-eye at the target range, blaze through the hiking trails, glide through the water on our kayaks, or test our outdoor survival skills? Whichever combination we choose; it's guaranteed to be exciting!
Child and Babysitting Safety for Teens
Teens can be certified in Babysitting Safety. The program includes instruction on the business of babysitting, proper supervision, caregiving skills, and guidelines on how to recognize and handle problems that may occur.
