Gaming

Not too long ago, kids would rush out of school and head straight to the nearest park. Swings, slides, and games of tag were where friendships began. Today, the playground looks very different. Instead of monkey bars, children log into online games. Their hangout spots are no longer neighborhood parks but virtual worlds where they can chat, build, and play with friends, sometimes even with kids living on the other side of the world.

For parents who grew up hearing the phrase “go outside and play,” this shift can feel surprising, even worrying. But for today’s generation, video games are quickly becoming the new playgrounds. Just like the swings and seesaws of the past, these digital spaces are where kids learn to talk, work together, and build friendships. The only difference is that it all happens behind a screen.

DIGITAL PLAYGROUNDS: HOW ONLINE GAMES TEACH KIDS TO SOCIALIZE

Words by Phia Manuell Layoso

WHY ROBLOX AND MINECRAFT ARE MORE THAN JUST GAMES

To adults, Roblox may look like a jumble of cartoonish worlds, while Minecraft appears to be nothing more than a block-stacking game. But to children, these platforms are vast, open spaces filled with imagination and connection.

Roblox is not a single game. It is a platform that offers millions of experiences created by users themselves. Kids can role-play as restaurant owners, superheroes, or explorers, often side by side with their friends.

Minecraft works more like a digital sandbox, often compared to virtual building blocks. Players can construct sprawling cities, fight monsters in survival challenges, or simply log in to chat and share their creativity.

Even Fortnite, which many parents know only as a competitive battle royale, now offers a Creative Mode where children can design their own games and worlds. In these spaces, kids are not only playing, they are creating and sharing with others.

To children, these games are not just a pastime. They are gathering places. Much like basketball courts or shopping malls serve as meeting points for teenagers, these virtual platforms provide a social outlet. The only difference is that kids do not need to leave their bedrooms to join in.

THE SOCIAL SIDE OF GAMING

Many adults still imagine gaming as a solitary activity, picturing kids sitting alone in front of a screen. In reality, many of today’s most popular games are social hubs.

Children do not simply play. They talk, laugh, and share their stories while gaming. In Roblox or Minecraft, conversations flow just as naturally as they would in a schoolyard. They joke with friends, give each other encouragement, and even provide comfort during tough days. For shy or introverted kids, these interactions can feel easier than speaking face-to-face. Behind a screen, they often find the confidence to express themselves more freely.

These games also foster teamwork and problemsolving skills. Running a virtual pizza shop, exploring a dungeon, or building an entire city requires cooperation and planning. The online setting also removes physical boundaries. A child in Manila can just as easily work on a castle with a friend in New York as with a neighbor down the street.

In this sense, gaming has become a new kind of playground. Children are not only playing within a game. They are playing through it, turning digital spaces into places where friendships grow.

THE NOT-SO-FUN SIDE

THE BENEFITS OF SOCIAL GAMING

For most children, gaming is not just entertainment. It is where relationships are built and strengthened. Meeting up after school might now mean logging into Roblox or Minecraft instead of visiting the local park, but the spirit of hanging out remains the same.

For children who are naturally quiet or hesitant in social situations, games often make interaction easier. Talking while exploring or building feels less intimidating than speaking face-to-face. It provides a bridge to connect with others.

The benefits go beyond friendship. Teambased games teach quick thinking, strategy, and collaboration. Creative platforms inspire storytelling, design skills, and even the basics of coding, often without children realizing that they are learning.

Perhaps one of the most important advantages is inclusivity. Physical playgrounds sometimes leave children out, whether because of athletic ability or social dynamics. Virtual playgrounds open the door for more kids to join in, contribute, and feel part of the group.

Like traditional playgrounds, digital ones are not without risks. It is easy for children to spend too many hours in front of a screen, missing out on sleep, schoolwork, and physical activity.

The chat features in these games can also be a double-edged sword. While meeting new people can be fun, it also exposes children to strangers who may not have the best intentions. Bullying is another concern. Hurtful words or being excluded from group play can sting even more online because the negativity can follow a child across every login.

Then there is the issue of in-game purchases. Many games are filled with tempting upgrades, outfits, and add-ons. They may seem small, but the costs can add up quickly, sometimes before parents realize how much has been spent.

None of this makes gaming “bad.” It simply highlights the need for balance and guidance. Setting reasonable time limits, talking openly about who children interact with, and keeping track of purchases can all help keep gaming safe and fun. Even better, when parents take a genuine interest in what their kids are building or who they are playing with, gaming turns into something families can share rather than something to worry about.

EXPERT TAKE

Experts agree that online games are not automatically harmful. In fact, they can nurture valuable life skills such as collaboration, creativity, and problemsolving. Schools are even adopting platforms like Minecraft Education Edition to bring lessons to life and make learning more engaging.

Still, balance is key. Too much screen time can affect sleep, school performance, and physical activity. Risks such as cyberbullying, interactions with strangers, and overspending are real. That is why parental involvement matters. When parents set boundaries, talk to their kids, and stay interested in what they are creating online, gaming can be both safe and rewarding.

FINAL WORD: MORE THAN JUST PLAY

For today’s children, games like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite are not just forms of entertainment. They have become modern hangouts. Instead of gathering at the park, kids meet online, chat, and build together in virtual environments that foster both fun and friendship.

The spaces may be digital, but the lessons remain familiar. Cooperation, creativity, sharing, and imagination all thrive within these worlds. What appears to be “screen time” to adults often feels like genuine social time to children.

DID YOU KNOW?

• Over 380 million people play Roblox every month.

• Minecraft has sold more than 300 million copies worldwide.

• During the pandemic, Roblox gained millions of users, many of them kids looking to connect.

BEYOND THE SCREEN: ESPORTS AND GAMING TOURISM

I’ve followed esports for years, both as a fan and as someone who understands the cultural and economic ripples it creates. What started as a niche hobby has evolved into a global phenomenon, not just in terms of viewership but also in the way it influences travel and tourism. Today, we’re seeing a new trend emerge: esports and gaming tourism.

Think of it this way: when a country hosts a major sporting event like the Olympics, tourists pour in to experience the spectacle. Esports is beginning to carve out the same kind of impact. Take the 2024 Paris Olympics as an example—

it posted a profit of approximately USD 86.8 million from ticket sales and sponsorships, excluding the billions spent by tourists. International tourism revenue in France hit 71-billion Euros that year, with a noticeable boost during the Games. Now imagine that kind of momentum translated to an esports event.

Why Hosting Esports Tournaments Matters

One of the defining strengths of esports is its built-in global audience. Millions of viewers tune in to watch tournaments online. In 2024, the League of Legends

World Championship reached over 6 million peak viewers, the highest for any esports event to date. That same year, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang dominated Southeast Asia, with MPL Indonesia Season 15 pulling in more than 4 million viewers during its grand finals. More recently, the 2025 Esports World Cup recorded 3 million peak views during the Mobile Legends Mid-Season Cup finals.

These numbers aren’t just stats. They represent potential tourists. Just as sports fans travel to watch games live, esports fans are increasingly willing to hop on a plane to catch their favorite teams in action.

From Screens to Cities

We’ve already seen how esports tournaments can have a direct impact on local economies. A study of the 2024 Perfect World Shanghai Major for Counter-Strike 2 revealed a 66% yearover-year increase in inbound tourists to the city, accompanied by a surge in hotel demand. In London, the 2024 League of Legends Championship finals generated an estimated 12 million British pounds in tourism and related activities. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s creation of the Esports World Cup in 2024 not only drew 3.5 million online viewers but also boosted tourist arrivals to Riyadh by 30%.

These cases underscore the significant impact of esports as a driving force in the economy. Hosting a major tournament requires logistics, infrastructure, and hospitality. But for cities willing to invest, the payoff can be significant.

Conventions and Community

Beyond tournaments, conventions have also become magnets for gamers. The US is home to massive events like PAX, which celebrates gaming and pop culture, and EVO, the go-to event for fighting game fans and aspiring pros.

Then there’s TwitchCon, born from Amazon’s streaming giant, where fans can meet their favorite streamers. What began as a single event in the US has now spread to both sides of the Atlantic.

Unique Gaming Experiences

Some cities are going beyond one-off events to build tourism experiences around gaming itself. Seoul is perhaps the best example. With its esports stadiums and legendary PC Bang cafés, it’s one of the few cities in the world where you can book a guided gaming tour. Visitors can explore team headquarters, practice facilities, and even

play in the same cafés where professional players once honed their skills. Some teams even open their HQs for fans to experience what it’s like to train like a pro.

China has taken a different approach, pioneering gaming-themed hotels. Imagine checking into a room not just with a bed and TV, but with a highpowered gaming PC ready for all-night sessions. Some hotels even offer team rooms with multiple PCs for group play or training camps.

The Road Ahead for Esports Tourism

Esports and gaming tourism may still be in their early stages, but the potential is undeniable. Cities that build the proper infrastructure can tap into a passionate and growing global community. It might sound niche today, but so did esports itself a decade ago. Now, it’s impossible to ignore.

Maybe one day, tour buses filled with esports fans will line up outside team headquarters, or travel agencies will offer packages that take gamers from one legendary internet café to another. As both a fan and someone who has seen the industry grow, I can’t wait to see where this new journey takes us.

HOW MANY IS TOO MANY GAME INFLUENCERS?

pen any streaming platform today and you are met with an endless scroll of gamers going live. Some play the latest blockbuster titles with polished production, while others broadcast from modest setups that feel more like hanging out with a friend. What began as a small community of standout personalities has grown into a saturated field where nearly everyone seems to be an influencer. This rapid growth has reshaped both the way audiences engage with gaming content and the way influence itself is understood.

The Attention Economy and Influencer Fatigue

The gaming space today resembles a crowded auditorium where everyone has a microphone. With Twitch streamers, TikTok creators, and YouTubers producing content at unprecedented rates, audiences are confronted with more material than they can possibly consume. Economist and Nobel Laureate Herbert Simon’s concept of the “attention economy” explains this phenomenon well. Information is abundant, but attention is scarce. The result is a form of “influencer fatigue,” where viewers no longer have the capacity or the patience to keep up with the endless stream of content. For brands, this scarcity of attention makes the marketplace even more competitive, as they struggle to identify which voices are genuinely worth investing in.

From Gatekeepers to the Long Tail

Not long ago, a handful of big personalities dominated the gaming world, functioning as cultural gatekeepers. Their opinions carried disproportionate weight in shaping community discourse. Today, however, we see the rise of what Chris Anderson calls the “long tail,” where smaller creators can thrive by catering to niche interests.

A streamer focused on speed-running obscure retro titles or a TikTok creator blending Filipino folklore with game commentary may never rival the top one percent in follower counts, but they can build communities rooted in shared identity and passion. This shift highlights the democratizing potential of the digital era, where influence is no longer determined solely by mainstream appeal but also by the ability to cultivate microcommunities.

“Perhaps the real issue is not the number of influencers but how gaming culture decides whose voices matter.”

The Iron Law of Oligarchy in Gaming Content

Despite this apparent democratization, not all creators enjoy the same opportunities. Robert Michels’ “iron law of oligarchy” reminds us that even in systems designed for openness, power tends to consolidate at the top. The gaming influencer ecosystem reflects this tendency.

Sponsorship deals, algorithmic visibility, and major platform support often flow disproportionately toward a select few creators. This reinforces a hierarchy that mirrors the very inequalities digital culture was supposed to dismantle. The paradox leaves smaller creators in a precarious position, visible enough to contribute but rarely resourced enough to compete with the industry’s elite.

Cultural Capital and the New Meaning of Influence

The question then becomes, what does it mean to be influential in such a crowded space? Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital offers a useful lens. Influence cannot be reduced to numbers alone. It is about legitimacy, authority, and the symbolic power a creator holds within their community.

For example, a creator with modest reach may carry significant weight in shaping the discourse of a specific fandom, precisely because their expertise or authenticity grants them trust. In this sense, influence in gaming is increasingly about credibility within context rather than broad, undifferentiated visibility.

The Brand Dilemma: Reach vs. Relevance

Brands now find themselves at a crossroads. The established logic of

advertising favors mass reach, yet the new creator landscape offers opportunities for hyper-targeted engagement. Choosing between megainfluencers and smaller, communitybased creators forces companies to weigh scale against intimacy. While the former provides visibility, the latter offers authenticity and deeper resonance with niche audiences. This dilemma reflects a larger tension in digital culture, one that asks whether success is measured by volume or by depth of connection.

Gaming Culture Beyond Metrics

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of this transformation is the cultural shift it signals. Gaming influencers are not only entertainers but also curators of values, stories, and communities. When smaller creators introduce inclusive narratives, revive forgotten genres, or experiment with creative formats, they shape gaming culture in ways that numbers alone

cannot capture. This reminds us that influence should be understood not only as the ability to draw viewers but also as the capacity to redefine the cultural fabric of gaming itself.

The question “How many is too many?” might not have a fixed answer. The abundance of gaming influencers does create noise, but it also signals a cultural shift where the power to shape conversations no longer rests with a few visible figures. Influence is being renegotiated every day, sometimes in small Discord servers and sometimes in mainstream arenas watched by millions. Perhaps the real issue is not the number of influencers but how gaming culture decides whose voices matter. In the end, the future of gaming influence may belong less to those who are the loudest and more to those who leave lasting imprints on how we play, connect, and imagine new worlds.

vivo V60

Smartphone

PHP28,999 – 12GB+256GB

PHP30,999 – 12GB+512GB

THE VIVO V60 has officially arrived in the Philippines, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most compelling midrange phones of the year. With a focus on portrait photography, battery life, and creative AI tools, it’s designed for users who want more than just the standard specifications.

At the center of the experience is a 50MP ZEISS Super Telephoto Camera that brings professional-level clarity to everyday moments. Whether you’re shooting from across the room or capturing quiet close-ups, the 3x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom deliver sharp, detailed results. vivo also introduces new focal lengths at 85mm and 100mm, expanding the ZEISS lineup that already includes 23mm, 35mm, and 50mm options. It’s a subtle but meaningful

upgrade for anyone who loves playing with depth and composition.

Battery life is another standout. The V60 packs a 6500mAh BlueVolt battery that’s built for long days and longer nights. When it’s time to recharge, 90W FlashCharge gets you to 25 percent in just 20 minutes. And with IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance, the phone is ready for whatever life throws at it.

Performance-wise, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 keeps things smooth and responsive, whether you’re streaming, gaming, or juggling multiple apps. It’s fast, reliable, and wrapped in a sleek body that feels premium without being flashy.

vivo also brings some clever AI tools to the table. AI FourSeason Portrait lets you switch backgrounds from spring to winter with a tap. AI Magic Move helps reposition subjects for better framing, and AI Image Expander can stretch your photo beyond its original borders without breaking the vibe. These features aren’t just gimmicks—they’re genuinely useful for users who want to get creative without diving into complex editing apps.

It is available in Berry Purple, Summer Blue, and Mist Gray.

Xiaomi Redmi 15C

XIAOMI’S REDMI 15C is a budget-friendly smartphone that doesn’t feel like one. With a sleek design, immersive display, and reliable performance, it’s built for users who want more from their everyday device—without spending more.

The 6.9-inch HD+ display is the star of the show, offering smooth visuals with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz AdaptiveSync. Whether you’re watching videos, scrolling through socials, or gaming on the go, the screen keeps up with your pace. The slim body and 3D quad-curved back make it comfortable to hold, while the floating crater deco adds a subtle touch of sophistication. Color options like Moonlight Blue and Twilight Orange bring a touch of personality, inspired by ocean tides and sunlight. It also comes in Midnight Black and Mint Green.

Inside, the Redmi 15C runs on the MediaTek Helio G81-Ultra processor, paired with up to 16GB RAM (via memory extension) and 1TB of expandable storage. It’s responsive enough for multitasking, light gaming, and daily apps. Xiaomi HyperOS 2 adds smart features like Circle to Search with Google, Gemini integration, and seamless device syncing through Call sync and Shared clipboard.

Battery life is a standout, with a 6000mAh capacity that supports up to 22 hours of video playback or 82 hours of music. 33W turbo charging gets you to 50% in just 31 minutes, and reverse charging lets the phone double as a power bank when needed.

The 50MP AI dual camera captures crisp, detailed shots in various lighting conditions, while IP64 dust and water resistance adds peace of mind for everyday use. A 200% volume boost ensures you won’t miss calls or alerts, even in noisy environments.

For users who want a stylish, capable phone that fits their lifestyle and budget, the Redmi 15C delivers everyday power with a polished edge.

VIVO V60

With ZEISS optics, a massive 6500mAh BlueVolt battery, and playful AI editing tools, the vivo V60 is clearly designed for users who shoot, share, and stay mobile. In this review, we go handson to see how it holds up in real-world use—from solo shoots to multitasking marathons.

DESIGN

The vivo V60 review unit we received came in Mist Gray, perfect for those who prefer their phones to be more muted. If you want something flashier, Berry Purple and Summer Blue colorways are also available. In addition to being stealthier, the Mist Gray variant is also slightly thinner and lighter than its siblings, measuring 7.53mm versus 7.65mm and weighing 192g versus 200g, respectively. It actually takes the

title of the brand’s slimmest phone with a 6500mAh BlueVolt battery from the vivo V50 Lite 5G—a very impressive engineering feat.

The camera setup on the rear sits on the upper-left corner, marked by the iconic ZEISS logo. The oblong-shaped island contains the two primary shooters—the main one is at the top while the telephoto lens is at the bottom. The wide-angle camera and vivo’s signature Aura Light system sit separately from and to the right of this island.

Up front, the vivo V60 sports a 6.77-inch quad-curved AMOLED display with a punch-hole selfie camera along the top and an in-display fingerprint sensor by the bottom. Ports and buttons are standard: power and volume on the right edge; one half of the dual stereo speaker system along the top edge; a bare left edge; and the SIM tray, USB-C port and the other half of the dual stereo speaker system along the bottom edge.

More than being a pretty phone, the vivo V60 is also IP68 and IP69 rated for dustand water-resistance.

HARDWARE

Running the show is the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, bringing a 27% faster processor, 30% better graphics driver, and 65% improved AI performance versus its predecessor. It specifically has an Adreno 722 GPU, 3x Cortex A-520 cores running at up to 1.8GHz, 4x Cortex A-720 cores running at up to 2.4GHz; and a lone Cortex A-720 core maxing out at 2.8GHz. The chip is paired with 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of non-expandable internal storage.

The aforementioned 6.77-inch AMOLED display is no slouch either, with a 2392 x 1080 resolution, up to 120Hz refresh rate, and HDR support. Eye care comes courtesy of SGS low blue light certification. Multimedia viewing and gaming is promised to be more immersive with dual stereo speakers taking care of audio duties.

Keeping the lights on is a hefty 6500mAh BlueVolt battery with 90W FlashCharge courtesy of the bundled power brick. vivo claims a 25% charge in just 20 minutes.

On to the main event: the cameras. This is where the vivo V60 truly shines. Costarring are the ZEISS-engineered 50MP main and 50MP telephoto shooters, with the former handling 23mm, 35mm, and 50mm portrait duties; and the latter handling 85mm and 100mm portraits. Note that these are optical—not digital— focal lengths, ensuring the highest quality shots possible. OIS is also available for both for even clearer details and low-light performance. An 8MP ZEISS ultrawide lens is available for wide angle and landscape-oriented shots. Meanwhile, a 50MP ZEISS group selfie camera sits in front.

USER EXPERIENCE

In everyday use, the vivo V60 feels responsive and consistent. Apps launch

quickly and multi-tasking is near seamless. Popular multiplayer titles such as Call of Duty: Mobile and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang run at maximum settings without a problem. Heavier titles like Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, Diablo Immortal, and NBA 2K Mobile are also generally smooth with all possible settings tuned to the highest they will go, though do expect minor stutters during scenes with huge draw distances. Ultra Game Mode is available to help you extract the most power from the device to minimize such instances.

In terms of benchmarks, the vivo V60 scored 11315 in PCMark Work 3.0; 6394 in 3DMark Wild Life; 1293 on the Geekbench 6 CPU single-core test; 3638

on the Geekbench 6 CPU multi-core test; and 4602 on the Geekbench 6 GPU OpenCL test. For the storage speeds, it notched a sequential read and write speed of 762.39MB/s and 251.76MB/s, respectively, on the Cross Platform Disk Test.

Battery life is another highlight. On the PCMark Work 3.0 battery test with maximum volume and at 50% brightness, it took 21 hours and 19 minutes for the vivo V60 to go from 100% to 20% juice. This synthetic score carries over into the real world, where after an eight hour commute to and from my office and a nine hour work day, the vivo V60 still had around half of its battery life left. That’s with data always on, streaming music,

watching a handful of 1-hour-episode shows, doomscrolling, and a few quick mobile gaming rounds. When I did need to charge it, the vivo V60 lived up and even performed better than it promised. It went from dead to 35% in just 20 minutes of being tethered to the wall, and reached full capacity in under one hour.

Camera performance is expectedly impressive. The ZEISS partnership shows up in the sharpness, details, and color post-processing of images shot with the normal camera mode and especially with the Portrait mode. The ZEISS Multifocal Portrait feature is particularly impressive, with ZEISS’ visually-pleasing and naturallooking handling of bokeh resulting in stunning shots across the five available focal lengths. Low-light performance is also strong thanks to the OIS.

AI tools are also available, including AI Four-Season Portrait for seasonal foliage wherever you may be; AI Magic Move and AI Image Expander to help reframe your shots; and AI Erase 3.0 to remove any unwanted elements from your photos.

Finally, while the vivo V60 is IP68 and IP69 certified, I wouldn’t recommend dunking it in a bucket of water. Still, the

peace of mind came in handy when I had to brave one of the more recent Metro Manila downpours with the device in my pocket.

VALUE

The vivo V60 markets itself as the “telephoto portrait master” in the midpremium space. Priced at PHP 28,999 for the 12GB + 256GB variant and PHP 30,999 for the 12GB + 512GB model, it occupies space closer to the entry-level flagship tier. While it’s not exactly budgetfriendly, the device more than justifies its tag with features such as ZEISS optics, a large high-density battery, and blazing 90W charging.

What you get is a device that looks premium, performs reliably, and shoots wonderfully. If photography and battery life are your top considerations, the vivo V60 should be high on your list.

BOTTOMLINE

For those who want a reliable daily driver that can double as a dedicated snapper, this is one of the most compelling options in the vivo V-series yet.

REALME 15 PRO 5G

Every new phone launch comes with the same big question: Does it bring anything fresh to the table, or is it just another pretty face with a spec sheet? The realme 15 Pro 5G positions itself as both an eye-catching device that also promises reliable performance, playful AI features, and all-day usability. After spending time with it, the phone feels less like a simple upgrade and more like a personality piece, blending style, brains, and a touch of quirk.

DESIGN

Opening the box felt like a blind box purchase because I had no clue which color variant I would get. To my surprise, I pulled out the Flowing Silver version. As a girl, that moment felt like a little unboxing win. The finish is so beautiful that using a case almost feels like a crime. The reflective silver catches light in a way that makes it look more like jewelry than just another gadget.

But there is a trade-off. The triple-camera setup on the back has huge lenses, which look striking but also make the phone awkward to place flat on a table. It wobbles in a way that is just uncomfortable to see. Beautiful, yes. Practical, not always.

HARDWARE

Internally, the realme 15 Pro 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 (5G, 4nm) chip, which makes everyday use feel effortless. Whether I’m gaming, juggling Spotify with messages, or falling into a TikTok rabbit hole, it doesn’t flinch. With 12GB RAM (expandable up to ~14GB), I can leave way too many apps open and it still runs smoothly. Storage is generous, with options of 256GB or 512GB, which feels like a green light to hoard K-drama episodes, thousands of photos, and way too many memes.

The display is where things get extra. The 6.8-inch 4D Curve+ AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate makes scrolling

through Instagram or YouTube buttery smooth, and the 6,500nits peak brightness means I can actually see my screen under the brutal Philippine sun. It’s like a little cinema in your hand but sharper and brighter than you’d expect.

Camera-wise, it’s fun to play with three 50MP lenses. The Sony IMX896 main sensor with OIS delivers crisp results, the ultra-wide lens is perfect for group shots, and the 50MP selfie camera makes you rethink ever settling for less.

Then there’s the battery. Packing a 7,000mAh cell, this thing can handle a whole day of doom-scrolling and Netflix binges without panicking. When it does need juice, the 80W SUPERVOOC charging feels like grabbing a snack; you’re back at it in no time.

USER EXPERIENCE

Using the realme 15 Pro 5G feels like having a pocket-sized entertainment buddy. The display is a joy to watch, especially for binge sessions. Colors pop in a way that looks realistic rather than exaggerated, which makes hours of Netflix or YouTube feel immersive. But here’s the catch: watch long enough and the phone gives off a bit of warmth in your hands. Not unbearable, but noticeable, like it is reminding you to take a break.

For gaming, it pulls through decently even on heavier titles like Mobile Legends and Call of Duty Mobile. Graphics look smooth, animations stay responsive, and the 120Hz refresh rate helps keep gameplay fluid. The only trade-off is that extended gaming sessions can heat it up, so you might want to keep breaks in between matches.

The star of the experience, though, is the AI Genie. Think of it as your built-in photo editor that listens to oddly specific wishes. I tested it with a few fun prompts. First, I asked it to turn a massive dog into a cat, and the result was decent. It actually looked like a cat, though nothing too

mind-blowing. Next, I told it to swap out the man on a book cover for a woman, and it managed to pull it off in a way that was recognizable but not perfect. Lastly, I had it erase the words “Artificial Intelligence” on the same cover. It got messed up. Just like any generative AI, the more detailed your instructions, the better the outcome. It feels almost like chatting with a genie, except this one sometimes takes your wish a little too literally.

On top of that, I also tried out the Starburst and Heart lighting effects. They are undeniably cute and fun for quick experiments, but honestly, they are more of a “just because you can” feature. Playful? Yes. Essential? Not really. They land in that category of features you will try once or twice for the novelty, then forget about until you are bored at 2 AM.

VALUE

The realme 15 Pro 5G comes in at PHP27,999 for the 12GB + 256GB variant. It is not exactly budget-friendly, but you are paying for a combination of premium design, reliable performance, and an AI-powered camera experience. For those who want a phone that looks stunning and has enough brains to match, this price tag feels justified.

BOTTOMLINE

The realme 15 Pro 5G is like that friend who is effortlessly pretty but also surprisingly smart. It nails design with its Flowing Silver finish, delivers dependable performance for everyday use, and adds

playful AI features that you can show off to friends. Sure, it runs a little warm and has a few gimmicky tricks, but if you are after a phone that balances style, performance, and fun, this one makes a strong case for itself.

REDMI 15C

In a market filled with smartphones that promise big features at high prices, the REDMI 15C proves that one can definitely get a good phone without spending much money. Featuring a massive 6.9-inch screen, solid 6,000mAh battery, and sleek design, this affordable smartphone is designed for those who enjoy watching and browsing without the worry of draining their wallets. If you’re looking for a phone that combines style, affordability, and practicality, the REDMI 15C is worth a closer look.

DESIGN

The Redmi 15C boasts a sleek and modern look, featuring a slim profile and a 3D quad-curved back that makes it comfortable to hold and easy to grip. Its 6.9-inch HD+ screen, combined with up to 120Hz AdaptiveSync refresh rate, provides smooth scrolling, seamless transitions, and an excellent viewing experience.

I got the Midnight Black model, and it certainly carries that elegant, minimalist design that is sure to stand out. Another standout feature of the Redmi 15C is its IP64 Dust and Water Resistance, which adds durability and reassurance not often seen in budget friendly phones, making the device more durable and dependable for everyday use.

HARDWARE

Powered by the MediaTek Helio G81Ultra processor, the REDMI 15C manages

day-to-day apps, multi-tasking, and light gaming very efficiently. With up to 16GB of RAM through memory extension and support for 1TB expandable storage, you have ample capacity and good performance for its price range.

The 6000mAh battery is a big plus, easily lasting through an entire day under regular use. For streaming, scrolling, or

light gaming, there’s no need to plug in too frequently.

A notable advantage is the IP64 dust and water resistance, which adds durability and reassurance not often found in budget-friendly phones. Combined with dual SIM and microSD support, the hardware setup of the REDMI 15C strikes a balance between practicality and value.

USER EXPERIENCE

The REDMI 15C offers a highly satisfying daily experience, especially for entertainment. Its expansive screen provides an immersive viewing experience, bringing movies, series, and vlogs to life with vibrant colors and sharp details. The high refresh rate further enhances smoothness when navigating applications and browsing social media.

I also tried using it for gaming, and I was impressed by its performance. The graphics were fine, and the colors were bright and vibrant. It didn’t lag much, so playing was still enjoyable even if it’s not a high-end gaming phone. For a budget device, it performed pretty well.

The sound is where it falls a bit short. Although the speakers are loud enough, the sound quality becomes a bit harsh and uncomfortable when turned up to maximum levels. For a better experience, I recommend using headphones or an external speaker.

For the cameras, the 50MP rear one takes good photos, particularly during the day, while the 8MP front camera is decent for selfies. The quality isn’t as great as that of high-end phones, but it’s good enough if you just need it for casual shots.

VALUE

The REDMI 15C is unique in its price, offering a large screen, good battery life, and acceptable performance at PHP5,299. Even the more expensive versions, which cost PHP5,799 and PHP6,599, are reasonably priced compared to other alternatives. For those seeking an affordable phone with good features, it is well worth the investment.

BOTTOMLINE

The REDMI 15C finds a balance between price and usability. It’s perfect for users who love watching content, browsing social media, and need a dependable phone that won’t drain their wallet.

SAMSUNG Q600FQ AI Q SOUNDBAR

Soundbars have become the go-to solution for people who want better audio without the bulk of a full home theater system. Samsung Q600FQ AI Q Soundbar falls right into that category that promises Dolby Atmos, DTS Virtual:X, and adaptive sound in a clean, straightforward package. The question is: Does it actually deliver an upgrade worth your space and budget?

SOUNDBAR

DESIGN

Unboxing the Samsung Q600FQ AI Q Soundbar feels almost too simple. Inside, you get a sleek soundbar, a wireless subwoofer, and the bare essentials. No unnecessary clutter. The design philosophy is clear: minimalist form, maximalist impact. The bar itself is slim and understated, blending effortlessly into any setup. On a dark wood table, it looks polished. Against a modern divider, it almost disappears. But the real magic is when you turn it on. The sound demands attention, transforming your living room into a personal theater.

HARDWARE

Don’t let the slim profile fool you. This unit packs a True 3.1.2-channel system

with Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X, giving you immersive, three-dimensional sound. Unlike basic stereo systems, it doesn’t just push sound forward; it surrounds you and even gives the illusion of audio coming from above. That vertical depth makes a huge difference. When I watched Jurassic World, the roars and crashes didn’t just sound loud; they shook the room like I was in the middle of the action.

What impressed me even more was Samsung’s Q-Symphony. Usually, when you plug in a soundbar, your TV’s speakers are cut off and go unused. Here, the soundbar works with the TV speakers instead of replacing them, making everything feel bigger, clearer, and more layered. Dialogue cuts through sharply, effects sound richer, and the overall soundstage feels far wider than a single system could manage alone. However, it’s worth noting that features

like Q-Symphony and SpaceFit Sound Pro work best, or only with certain Samsung TVs. If the TV isn’t compatible, some of that added value is lost, which can make the experience vary depending on the setup at home.

USER EXPERIENCE

Setting up the Q600FQ AI Q Soundbar is laughably easy. Bluetooth pairing is quick, wires are kept to a minimum, and once it’s on, you’re ready to roll. Everyday use is equally smooth with One Remote Control, which lets you handle both the TV and soundbar without juggling multiple devices.

But what really impressed me was Adaptive Sound. To test it, I cycled through different kinds of content. For Marvel-style action flicks, it delivered room-shaking intensity. Every explosion, punch, and dramatic score had weight. When I switched to suspense thrillers, it picked up the little things I’d usually miss, like faint creaks in the background or a character’s sharp intake of breath, which heightened the tension. Horror films were

next, and honestly, this was my favorite test. The way the system handled sudden bursts of sound, eerie silences, and creepy ambient noise was enough to keep me bracing for every jump scare. Even with quiet, dialogue-heavy dramas and older silent-style films, it impressed me. Soft whispers, subtle background sounds, and emotional pauses felt detailed and intimate, proving that it wasn’t just built for loud blockbuster effects but for nuance too. On a lighter note, watching concert streams felt like being in the front row, while an ASMR mukbang made every crunch and slurp sound so real it actually made me hungry.

VALUE

Although now marked down to almost half of its original PHP24,999 price tag, this is still not an impulse buy. However,

it can be considered a sound investment (pun intended) for those who want home entertainment to feel like an event. If you mostly watch the evening news or light sitcoms, you may not need this much firepower. But for movie nights, gaming sessions, binge-worthy series, and concert streams, the price is justified by the sheer level of immersion.

BOTTOMLINE

The Samsung Q600FQ AI Q Soundbar is a gateway to cinema-level sound at home. It’s easy to set up, smart in its features, and powerful enough to elevate everything from an action blockbuster to a quiet indie drama. Whether you’re chasing jump scares, action thrills, or crystal-clear vocals, this system adjusts to match. If you’ve ever wanted your living room to feel like both a concert hall and a cinema, this soundbar delivers loudly and convincingly.

XIAOMI TV A 55 2026

I already have TVs in the living and family areas, so the Xiaomi TV A 55 2026 found its place in my bedroom. Marketed with the tagline “Smart living, immersive viewing”, this TV is more than just a crisp 4K panel. It’s a gateway to effortless streaming and everyday entertainment.

DESIGN

At first, a 55-inch panel felt like it might overwhelm my room, but it turned out to be just the right size. Positioned on a builtin wall desk in front of a large window, the TV feels integrated into the space, part of my cozy retreat at night rather than something oversized or intrusive.

The ultra-thin bezel and metal finish give it a premium look that feels more expensive than it is. In daylight, with natural light streaming around it, the TV looks understated; at night, with the curtains drawn, the screen becomes the room’s centerpiece.

I opted to keep it on the double stand setup instead of wall-mounting. The wide stands are solid and stable, keeping the TV steady even when I shift things on the desk. Around the back, Xiaomi kept the design clean and minimal, with ports arranged neatly to the side: three HDMI (one with Game Boost), a USB 2.0, Ethernet, composite AV-in, optical out, and antenna input. This makes plugging in accessories easy without messing up the tidy look.

Although the TV weighs only about 13 kg, its 1.2-meter width makes it awkward to move alone. Carrying it into position felt manageable, but I’d recommend an extra pair of hands to make setup safer and smoother.

HARDWARE

The 55-inch 4K UHD HDR display is where the Xiaomi TV A 55 2025 really proves itself. Filmmaker Mode is a revelation. Switching it on strips away the artificial smoothing and overly vivid colors TVs usually apply by default. What you get instead is a viewing experience that looks closer to how the creators intended.

On Netflix, Wednesday’s gothic aesthetic, with its shadowy interiors, candlelit halls, and moonlit forest scenes, came

through with striking clarity. The moody atmosphere was preserved without being over-brightened. On Prime Video, the lush visuals of Butterfly felt vibrant yet natural, with color and motion rendered faithfully thanks to Filmmaker Mode’s careful tone mapping. These two series highlighted how well the panel can handle both dark, detail-heavy visuals and rich, expressive cinematography.

Under the hood, a quad-core Cortex-A55 processor and Mali G52 GPU, backed by 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage,

handle the workload. For streaming, it is sufficient. YouTube and Netflix ran smoothly once loaded, but launching apps felt sluggish at times.

Audio is powered by dual 10W speakers, enhanced with Dolby Audio™, DTS:X, and DTS Virtual:X. Dialogue came through clearly, and YouTube concerts carried enough depth to feel immersive. While the built-in sound will not replace a subwoofer or surround system, it delivers more than enough for casual viewing in a bedroom setup.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Google TV interface is neat and well-organized, pulling together YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, and more in one place. Logging into my Google account synced watchlists quickly, and within days the home screen was recommending shows that matched my preferences.

Where the experience falters is in responsiveness. Launching apps feels a bit sluggish, and the “Hey Google” voice assistant sometimes takes a while to respond or requires repeating commands. It works, but it is not as seamless as I had hoped.

On the brighter side, casting was smooth and reliable. Google Cast, Miracast, and Apple AirPlay all worked effortlessly, whether for pushing Spotify playlists or mirroring videos from my phone.

The eye-care display deserves mention, since after long nights of watching, I felt noticeably less eye strain.

I also appreciate the Xiaomi TV+ channels, which provide free live content that works perfectly for background viewing when I don’t feel like browsing.

VALUE

Xiaomi has always positioned itself as the brand for value-conscious consumers, and the TV A 55 2026 continues that tradition. Priced at PHP19,699, you get a 55-inch 4K HDR display, Dolby and DTS audio, Filmmaker Mode, Google TV

with “Hey Google” voice control, seamless casting, and Xiaomi TV+ channels.

There are compromises: the 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage mean it isn’t designed for heavy multitasking, and the speakers, while solid, don’t deliver cinema-level bass. But these limitations are easy to accept given what it offers at this price point.

For families, it’s a strong and affordable primary TV. For younger buyers, it’s a first step into premium smart features. And for me, as a personal screen in my bedroom, it feels like a small luxury that has changed the way I end my day.

BOTTOMLINE

The Xiaomi TV A 55 2026 is not pretending to be a flagship OLED. Instead, it focuses on delivering the essentials— and delivering them well. The overall experience and value it offers make it easy to recommend this to anyone seeking smart living and immersive viewing without overspending.

THE FLIP AND FOLD PHENOMENON

WHY TECH WANTS US TO KEEP

BENDING THE FUTURE

For over a decade, smartphone design has followed a predictable trajectory. Flat rectangles with slightly sharper cameras, faster processors, and larger displays became the default. Foldable phones disrupted this sameness. Initially, they were dismissed as fragile novelties, but they have evolved into cultural artifacts and technological milestones. Their significance lies not only in the way they bend but also in what they reveal about consumer culture, engineering ambition, and the future of personal devices.

Nostalgia and Cultural Memory

Foldables deliberately draw on cultural memory. For those who used flip phones in the early 2000s, especially the iconic Motorola Razr, closing a device was more than functional. It was an expressive gesture that marked the end of a conversation. Today’s all-touchscreen designs do not recreate that physical satisfaction. By bringing back the flip and fold, companies revive the tactile dimension of communication.

Younger consumers, however, encounter foldables in a different way. They see them as futuristic because they grew up with phones that looked nearly identical. Foldables, therefore, carry a dual appeal. They are retro for older generations and innovative for younger ones. This unusual overlap allows foldables to serve as cultural bridges across age groups.

Status and the Performance of Technology

Foldables are not only nostalgic objects. They are also status symbols. Their high cost reflects the difficulty of producing

flexible OLED panels, which have low manufacturing yields. Many panels fail during production, making successful ones more expensive. This positions foldables closer to luxury goods than everyday tools.

In places such as South Korea and China, they are marketed alongside fashion products and lifestyle brands. This aligns them with high-end consumer culture. Using a foldable phone in public signals not just access to new technology but also cultural awareness and purchasing power. They perform social identity as much as they perform communication tasks.

The Engineering of Flexibility

The heart of foldables lies in their materials and mechanics. What manufacturers call glass is actually an ultra-thin sheet, measuring less than 0.2-millimeters in thickness. It is chemically treated so that it can bend without shattering, making it more of a glass-polymer hybrid than the rigid glass in conventional phones.

This fragile surface depends on hinge systems that are tested by robots to survive up to 200,000 folds. In theory, this equals five years of use at one hundred folds per day. Yet durability remains a challenge. Dust is more dangerous than drops, since tiny particles can slip inside the hinge and cause damage. Some foldables now come with water resistance ratings, but none are fully dust resistant.

Repairability is another weakness. Reviewers often give foldables some of the lowest scores, usually between one and

Photo by Jonas Leupe on Unsplash

two out of ten. Their layered construction, adhesives, and hinge complexity make screen replacements costly and independent repairs nearly impossible. This highlights a core contradiction. The devices are marvels of engineering, yet among the least practical to maintain.

Market Dynamics and “Slab Fatigue”

Foldables also need to be understood within the context of a slowing smartphone market. Since the late 2010s, global sales have leveled off as most devices became indistinguishable. Many consumers experience what has been called “slab fatigue,” a boredom with the sameness of flat-screen phones. Foldables reintroduce a sense of novelty and spark attention in an otherwise stagnant sector.

Their overall market share remains small. In 2023, foldables accounted for less than 2% of worldwide shipments. However, their presence in advertisements and media coverage makes them appear more central than the numbers suggest. In South Korea, foldables already account for more than a third of premium smartphone sales, suggesting mainstream adoption.

In Europe and North America, they remain niche products chosen mainly by early adopters and luxury buyers.

Spectacle versus Substance

Foldables sit at the crossroads of spectacle and substance. On the surface, they promise functional advantages such as larger displays in compact designs, improved multitasking, and new interaction modes. At the same time, this raises concerns about durability and reliability.

The crease that runs across the middle of the screen captures this divide. Technically, it does not prevent the device from working. Symbolically, however, it feels like an imperfection to many users. Foldables, therefore, reveal an important truth about consumer culture. Technical function matters, but perception and aesthetics matter just as much.

Environmental Considerations

Foldables complicate the already difficult conversation on sustainability. Their layered screens, adhesives, and intricate

hinges make them difficult to recycle. Combined with low repairability, this increases the risk of worsening electronic waste. Critics argue that fragile and expensive devices could shorten product lifespans and accelerate disposal rates.

Manufacturers respond with a different argument. They claim that foldables combine the roles of two devices, a smartphone and a tablet, into one. If this becomes widespread, consumers might own fewer devices overall. However, there is currently little evidence to confirm this outcome. For now, the environmental impact of foldables remains uncertain.

Toward a Flexible Ecosystem

These phones are not the endpoint but the beginning of a broader design movement. Flexible screens are already being tested for laptops, tablets, and televisions. Rollable and stretchable prototypes have also been demonstrated. If these designs become affordable and practical, they could change the way people consume media and use devices for work.

Seen this way, foldables are the first step toward a flexible ecosystem. They signal a shift in design philosophy where mobility, adaptability, and portability are valued as much as raw performance.

“Foldables sit at the crossroads of spectacle and substance. On the surface, they promise functional advantages such as larger displays in compact designs, improved multitasking, and new interaction modes.”

The foldable phenomenon represents more than a temporary trend. It shows the intersection of nostalgia, engineering, status, and consumer spectacle. Foldables remain fragile and costly, but they have already changed the conversation about what phones can be.

Their true importance lies not in replacing today’s flatscreen devices, but in reintroducing imagination into an industry that has grown predictable. Whether or not they become mainstream, foldables prove that innovation can take physical form by bending both glass and culture toward new possibilities.

TOYOTA CAMRY 2.5 V HEV CVT

At this stage of my life, I have come to appreciate the quiet things. A good meal with old friends. A strong cup of barako coffee in the morning. And when it comes to cars, I no longer chase speed or flash. I look for something that feels right, something that respects the years I have put in and the life I have built. That is exactly what I found in the Toyota Camry 2.5 V HEV CVT.

This is not a car that tries to impress with noise or gimmicks. It is for someone who has already made his mark and now values comfort, reliability, and understated class.

DESIGN

The Camry carries a quiet kind of elegance. The unit I drove came in Platinum White Pearl Mica, a color that looked right whether navigating city streets or pulling up to the country club driveway. It does not shout for attention, but people notice. It is like wearing a well-ironed barong: dignified, timeless, and always appropriate.

The wide front grille and slim LED headlights give it a sharp, confident look. Smooth body lines and 18-inch alloy wheels add just enough flair without being flashy. From every angle, it looks composed.

Inside, the cabin feels like a space built for someone who has earned

their comfort. The leather seats are wide and supportive, ideal for long drives to meetings or weekend retreats. The memory function on the driver’s seat is a thoughtful touch that makes daily use easier. Rear passengers enjoy generous legroom, their own air vents, and a fold-down armrest with controls. Think of it as a lounge on wheels.

The dashboard is clean and intuitive. The infotainment screen is large and responsive, with seamless Apple CarPlay integration. The panoramic sunroof adds a premium feel, letting in natural light during daytime drives and elevating the ambiance without going over the top.

HARDWARE

Under the hood, the Camry pairs a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor, delivering 230ps of combined power output and 221Nm of torque. It is not built for racing, and that suits me fine. What it offers is smooth, quiet performance, especially in city traffic, where the electric motor handles low-speed driving with grace.

The CVT transmission is tuned for comfort. No jerky shifts, no unnecessary drama, just a steady, composed ride. The hybrid battery is tucked neatly under the rear seat, preserving trunk space for golf bags, overnight luggage, or a few boxes of documents.

Safety features are generous. Toyota Safety Sense includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure alerts, automatic high beams, and

pre-collision braking. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are especially helpful in tight parking spaces. These are not just premium features, they are peace-ofmind features.

USER EXPERIENCE

This was my first time driving a hybrid, and I was not sure what to expect. But in Metro Manila traffic, the electric motor quietly powers the car at low speeds, making stopand-go driving less stressful. You glide through congestion without the usual engine noise or vibration. When the gasoline engine kicks in, the transition is so smooth you barely notice.

The suspension is tuned for comfort. It absorbs potholes, humps, and uneven provincial roads with ease. You do not brace yourself at every bump. The Camry stays steady, with minimal body roll and light, confident steering. It is ideal for those who prefer a calm, measured drive over aggressive cornering.

Inside, the cabin is impressively quiet. Road noise is kept out, allowing full conversations at highway speeds without raising your voice. Whether discussing business or catching up with family, the sound insulation makes every trip more pleasant. The premium 9-speaker JBL audio system adds to the ambiance, delivering rich, clear sound whether it is jazz, OPM classics, or a podcast.

Rear passengers enjoy a loungelike experience. Reclining seats, consistent cooling from dedicated vents, and a fold-down armrest with controls make them feel cared for. For the driver, the heads-up display is a subtle but useful feature, showing speed and navigation prompts right on the windshield.

The Camry rewards a relaxed driving style. It does not beg to be pushed; it invites you to take your time, enjoy the ride, and arrive refreshed.

VALUE

With a sticker price of PHP2,677,000, the Camry is clearly positioned at the upper end of the midsize sedan segment. While many buyers today lean toward SUVs and crossovers, this sedan appeals to those who appreciate tradition, elegance, and a smoother ride. It is for executives who prefer the grace of a sedan and the prestige that comes with it.

The hybrid system is not just a marketing gimmick, it delivers real savings. In city driving, you can reach over 20km/L, which is impressive for a car this size. Over time, that means real savings, especially if you drive often for work or leisure. And because it is a Toyota, you are getting longterm reliability and strong resale value.

BOTTOM LINE

The Toyota Camry 2.5 V HEV CVT is not about showing off. It is about quiet confidence. It combines the comfort of a luxury sedan, the savings of a hybrid, and the reliability of a Toyota. For someone in my stage of life, it feels like the right choice. A car that carries you with dignity, makes long drives enjoyable, and reminds you that sometimes, the real mark of success is choosing substance over show.

REVIEWED BY ARNEL DORIA

KIA SORENTO 1.6 SX TURBO HYBRID AT AWD

I have spent much of my career in the automotive industry and have seen SUVs change from rugged, basic machines into refined, high-tech family cars. In my own garage, I still keep a 2001 Mitsubishi Pajero, a 2008 Jeep Commander, and a 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan. Each of them represents a different stage in SUV history. When I drove the Kia Sorento 1.6 SX Turbo Hybrid AT AWD, I wanted to know if this new hybrid SUV could really combine efficiency and comfort with the kind of dependability that Filipino families look for.

DESIGN

The Sorento looks smart and confident. The tiger-nose grille, slim LED headlights, and 19-inch wheels make it modern and stylish, but not too flashy. The size feels just right, with enough presence on the road without being too bulky.

The cabin shows how far SUVs have come. Quilted leather seats, a wide panoramic sunroof, and soft ambient lighting make the interior feel premium. The infotainment screen is large and easy to use, and it works well with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The second row has good space even for tall passengers, while the third row is small but useful for kids or short trips. When the rear seats are folded, there is a lot of space for luggage or groceries. Compared to the interiors of my aged Pajero and Jeep, the Sorento feels more refined and updated.

HARDWARE

The Sorento’s 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine works in tandem with an electric motor, producing a combined 235ps maximum power and 367Nm of torque. The six-speed automatic transmission ensures power delivery is smooth, avoiding the drone of CVTs that plague other hybrids. In heavy city traffic, the electric motor takes on the burden, saving fuel during stop-and-go situations. On the expressway, the turbo engine responds confidently when called upon, making overtaking a breeze.

The AWD system deserves mention. Torque is distributed intelligently between the front and rear wheels, providing assurance on slippery or uneven roads. I tested the Sorento during one of Manila’s sudden, heavy downpours that left some streets with gutter-level flooding. It

powered through without fuss, the ground clearance and AWD grip providing calm where other vehicles might hesitate. On rougher roads, the suspension absorbed potholes and gravel surfaces without unsettling the cabin.

Kia has also equipped the Sorento with terrain modes—snow, mud, and sand—and a 4L (low gear) function. The latter is uncommon in hybrids and makes the vehicle surprisingly capable on inclines and tricky patches. While it is no Pajero in terms of ruggedness, it provides the kind of versatility that gives peace of mind when roads turn unpredictable.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Sorento is easy to drive and does not require any special adjustment even if it is a hybrid. The switch between electric and gasoline power is very smooth, and you barely notice it. Inside, the cabin is quiet, and engine noise is kept low except during hard acceleration.

The driving position feels natural and gives good visibility. The 360-degree camera is a big help in tight parking spaces in the city. Steering is light at low speeds, making it easy to maneuver, and becomes more stable at higher speeds.

Comfort is one of its biggest strengths. The leather seats are supportive and have lumbar adjustment for the driver.

The heated and cooled front seats are a welcome luxury in our climate, while the heated steering wheel is a pleasant surprise during cooler mornings in Tagaytay or Baguio. Second-row passengers enjoy ample legroom, independent climate controls, and charging ports. The third row is smaller but fine for children or quick trips. On long drives, the cabin remains comfortable and quiet, with the suspension keeping the ride smooth.

Kia paid attention to details that matter in daily use. I liked the power outlets in the rear console

and luggage area, very useful for charging gadgets during trips. The two USB ports in the front center console and additional ports at the back of the front seats are practical for families with multiple devices. The Bose 12-speaker sound system delivers excellent audio quality, turning traffic jams into more pleasant experiences.

Not everything worked for me, though. I am not a fan of the rotarytype gear shift knob, as I still prefer the feel of a traditional shifter. But aside from that, the Sorento’s convenience features and comfort add up to a user experience that feels complete and well thought-out.

Technology also enhances driving without being distracting. Adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist make expressway driving less tiring. Blind-spot monitoring and the head-up display give extra confidence when changing lanes or checking speed. Even in heavy rain, the Sorento felt stable and reassuring. Compared to the heavier feel of my Pajero and Commander, it is clear that the Sorento was designed to make daily driving less stressful.

VALUE

At PHP2,888,000, the Sorento Hybrid AWD is undeniably positioned at the premium end of the midsize SUV segment. Yet,

BOTTOM LINE

when you factor in its real-world fuel economy of around 14–16km/ L, the suite of premium features, and its AWD capability, it makes for a strong proposition. Against the thirst of my Commander or even the Tiguan, the fuel savings are substantial.

Kia’s regular 5-year/160,000km warranty and an extended 8-year/160,000km battery warranty, should reassure those still hesitant about hybrid ownership. It is not a plug-in hybrid which, in my opinion, is not a disadvantage in the Philippine setting, where charging infrastructure remains limited. You simply refuel and let the system quietly handle the efficiency.

The Kia Sorento 1.6 SX Turbo Hybrid AT AWD illustrates how far SUVs have come. It doesn’t rely on brute force like my Pajero or Commander, nor does it chase European refinement in the way my Tiguan does. Instead, it strikes a balance: efficient, comfortable, and versatile, tailored to the needs of today’s Filipino family. In the city it is composed, on the highway it is confident, and when the roads get rough or the rains pour down, it proves itself capable. For those who want a forward-looking SUV without sacrificing practicality, the Sorento Hybrid stands as a very strong contender.

MG

ZS HYBRID+

In the financial markets, we live by one rule: maximize returns, minimize risk. I apply the same ruthless calculus to cars. My ideal ride isn’t just about horsepower; it’s a value proposition—reliable performance, tangible efficiency, and tech that actually deletes frustration, not adds to it. I took the MG ZS Hybrid+ for a spin through Metro Manila’s most rigorous stress test to see if its numbers add up.

DESIGN

The ZS Hybrid+ rocks a clean, modern aesthetic: Think a crisp barong with a subtly aggressive cut. The LED headlights are like high-lumen projectors, cutting through the perpetual “-ber months” twilight, while the 18-inch alloys and black interior are premium features that scream “executive class” without the executive price tag. The front grille, however, is all business, looking less like a car part and more like a jet engine’s air intake, ready to suck in not just air but also the soul of the slow-moving sedan in front of you.

Inside, the cabin is a well-optimized user interface. The 12.3-inch touchscreen is the command center, bright and responsive, minimizing the need to dig through sub-menus while navigating a chaotic Ayala intersection. The leather seats are comfortable, though the lack of bolsters and lumbar support means you might do a little more core workout and stretching during a two-hour EDSA crawl. Softtouch materials on the dash say “premium,” but the door cards whisper “practicality” to keep the MSRP in check. The real win is the rear legroom and large windows, which effectively counteract any feeling of being trapped in a metal box during a monsoonseason traffic jam.

EQUIPMENT

This is where the car’s IPO shines. Under the hood, it’s running a sophisticated dual-core setup: a 1.5L gasoline engine and an electric motor. Combined, they deliver a robust 197PS and 250Nm of torque, managed by a dedicated 3-speed hybrid transmission.

In the stop-and-go chaos of Metro Manila, this isn’t a car; it’s an energy management system. The electric motor handles the low-power tasks like creeping forward in traffic, idling at a red light, with silent, zeroemission efficiency. It’s like your car has gone into power-saving mode, conserving precious fossil fuel for

when it’s actually needed. When you need a burst of power to merge onto C5, the gasoline engine kicks in seamlessly. The transition is so smooth you’ll miss the old-school jerk of a conventional transmission. My drive to Nuvali felt like a glitch in the matrix: How did I use so little fuel?

The suspension is tuned for Manila’s pockmarked asphalt, absorbing imperfections like a good shock absorber absorbs your frustrations. The MG Pilot suite (adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist) acts like advanced driver-assist scripts, automating the tedious parts of highway driving. My only quibble? For this price, the manual tailgate feels like an analog artifact in a digital world.

USER EXPERIENCE

The UX here is brilliantly intuitive. You don’t “operate” the hybrid system; it operates around you. The cabin remains an oasis of quiet, a critical feature when your external environment is a symphony of horns and bus engines. The infotainment system integrates flawlessly with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring your Waze and Spotify are always just a tap away—a non-negotiable for survival.

Passenger comfort is a huge win. The rear AC vents are a love letter to backseat passengers, and the generous legroom means no one

arrives at the family reunion with cramped knees. The cargo space is more than enough for a weekend’s worth of groceries from S&R or a trip to the province.

VALUE

Priced at PHP1.33M, the ZS Hybrid+ isn’t the cheapest in its class. It’s a premium. But in finance, we look at the Total Cost of Ownership. This is where it crushes the competition.

The fuel savings are immediate and obvious; it sips gasoline where others guzzle. But the masterstroke is MG’s warranty: a 5-year/100,000km vehicle warranty and a massive

8-year/160,000-km warranty on the hybrid battery. This isn’t just a promise; it’s a risk mitigation strategy that directly addresses the “’Naku, baka mahal ang pagawa ng

BOTTOM LINE

battery niyan pag nasira!’” anxiety that holds many Pinoys back from hybrids. It’s the company putting its money where its mouth is, building crucial trust in its technology.

The MG ZS Hybrid+ isn’t built for rock crawling or winning drag races. It’s engineered for a far more specific and demanding purpose: mastering the soul-crushing, fuelburning, patience-testing reality of Filipino urban driving.

It’s a pragmatic, high-tech solution that turns traffic from a costly ordeal into an opportunity for efficiency. For the driver who views their car as both a sanctuary and a strategic asset, the ZS Hybrid+ isn’t just a purchase—it’s one of the smartest investments you can make on four wheels.

DRIVING THROUGH HISTORY

NISSAN’S JOURNEY IN THE PHILIPPINES IS MARKED BY DECADES OF INNOVATION AND THE TRUST OF FILIPINO MOTORISTS

AS THE country celebrates History Month in August, Nissan Philippines looks back at its decades-long journey with Filipino motorists. From its early presence under the Datsun name to the innovative models seen on today’s roads, Nissan has long been part of the evolving Filipino driving experience.

Beginnings in the 1960s

Nissan entered the Philippines in the 1960s, with its first vehicles officially being sold under the Datsun brand. Vehicles like the Datsun 180B and Cedric 200C helped carve a space for the brand in the competitive passenger

car market, while pickups like the Datsun 1600 became well-regarded for blending rugged utility with car-like features.

These early offerings showcased Nissan’s versatility, with a lineup that included both passenger cars and light trucks.

This combination allowed the brand to cater to Filipino drivers seeking dependable transportation for everyday needs as well as vehicles capable of handling heavier tasks.

Growth and Local Manufacturing

By the 1980s, Nissan had begun assembling vehicles in the Philippines under government-led programs, enabling it to meet rising local demand while supporting jobs and skills development in the automotive industry.

Throughout the years, Nissan introduced nameplates that became staples of Filipino driving, with models like the Patrol and Frontier becoming trusted for both work and leisure, known for their performance in tough conditions. The Nissan Sentra, in particular, became a go-to sedan during the decade, known for its comfort, ease of use, and everyday reliability.

Dennis Carpio, who once owned a 1988 Nissan Sentra, purchased it from his neighbor and restored it to its original

showroom condition. Having previously owned a newer Sentra, he was drawn to the 1988 model for its rarity on today’s roads. “For me, the durability of the vehicle really stands out,” says Dennis. “Despite its age, the engine is still very easy to maintain and the body panels feel very solid.”

A New Millennium for Nissan

The early 2000s ushered in an era of growth and resurgence for Nissan in the Philippines, where the brand launched models that would define the decade, chief among them being the Nissan X-Trail in 2003. As Nissan’s

first compact crossover SUV in the Philippines, the X-Trail instantly resonated with Filipino drivers looking for a vehicle that combined versatility, performance, and comfort.

For Nicky Tuason, the owner of a 2006 X-Trail, the vehicle represents a bridge between past and present. He received his X-Trail as a hand-me-down from his grandparents. The X-Trail became their vehicle of choice due to the features and power it had for its size.

With a build inspired by the early 2000s, the car has become a homage to his late grandfather, who kept the vehicle in good condition throughout the years. “It’s the last car from my childhood. It saw me grow up and was always there growing up alongside me,” Nicky says. “And instead of getting a new car, I’d rather make this car be as good as a modern car. For its age, it can still go head-to-head with a modern one.”

The X-Trail quickly became a sales success. Within the first week of its local debut, over 100 units were sold, and by

Dennis’s Nissan Sentra, brought back to its original condition.

2004 and 2005, the X-Trail had made up over half of Nissan’s sales in the country.

Establishment of Nissan Philippines, Inc.

In 2013, the establishment of Nissan Philippines, Inc. (NPI) marked a new era of growth and innovation. The brand expanded its lineup to include globally recognized nameplates such as the Terra and notably, the Navara, which became one of Nissan’s most significant milestones. Debuting with a tough yet smart philosophy, the 12thgeneration Navara combined rugged durability with advanced technology, providing both aesthetic appeal and functional innovation.

For Den Paulino, the Navara has always been a reliable companion for her and her family. “We chose the Nissan Navara because it stood out in terms of comfort and safety for our kids. The 360-degree camera, six airbags, and intelligent safety features made it an easy choice for our family.”

The Navara’s introduction was also highlighted by its multi-link coil suspension that delivered unmatched comfort and ride quality to the pickup segment, with Den adding that “pickups are known for having bumpy rides but surprisingly, the Navara is very comfortable, almost like driving a sedan. I was intimidated at first because of its size but it’s easy to maneuver and light to steer for a pickup.”

Over the years, the Navara has earned its place as a trusted partner for countless Filipino families, accompanying them through milestones, everyday journeys, and adventures. “It is our family car and it brought us to a lot of milestones, especially the kids. We did a lot of firsts with our Navara. I am proud to own an efficient and reliable vehicle that can take us anywhere, anytime without compromise,” says Den.

The Journey Continues

In recent years, Nissan has continued to break new ground in the Philippines, introducing electrified mobility and

delivering innovative vehicles across segments. In 2021, it launched one of the country’s first mass-market EVs with the LEAF, followed in 2022 by the Kicks e-POWER, which delivers an EV driving experience without the need to plug in. Nissan also recently introduced the All-New Patrol, continuing the legacy of its iconic flagship SUV.

“From our earliest nameplates to today’s tech-driven lineup, our history in the Philippines has been one of constant evolution,” says Nissan Philippines president Masao Tsutsumi. “As we celebrate Philippine History Month, we also celebrate the many roads we have traveled together, and the many more still to come.”

Today, Nissan remains focused on enhancing the customer experience through innovation, technology, and a strong network of partners and dealers nationwide. From past icons to future-forward models, Nissan is proud to continue being part of every Filipino’s journey.

TRAVEL MADE SMARTER

Grab and DOT push digital tourism with food and inter-city travel innovations

Exploring the Philippines has always meant more than just visiting its iconic beaches and heritage towns. For many travelers, it’s also about savoring flavors unique to every province and navigating the journey between cities with ease.

Now, a new partnership between the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Grab is set to make those experiences more seamless, inclusive, and digitally powered.

Grab was named the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) Digital Tourism Partner in a recent Memorandum of Agreement signing. Present at the event were [L–R] DOT Assistant Secretary for Tourism Digitalization and Resource Generation Sharlene Zabala-Batin, Undersecretary for Tourism Regulation, Coordination & Resource Generation Shahlimar Hofer Tamano, Grab Philippines Vice President for Cities CJ Lacsican, and Grab Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Booey Bonifacio.

A Digital Tourism Partner

In a recently signed memorandum of agreement, the DOT officially named Grab as its Digital Tourism Partner. The collaboration is designed to strengthen two key aspects of Philippine travel: gastronomy and connectivity.

“With our suite of safe, reliable, and convenient services, we are reshaping how people explore destinations,” said CJ Lacsican, Grab Philippines vice president for cities. “This partnership fuels tourism while creating growth opportunities for small businesses — from community restaurants to lesser-known attractions.”

DOT assistant secretary for tourism digitalization Sharlene ZabalaBatin echoed this, noting how the tie-up underscores the agency’s mission to make tourism “inclusive, accessible, and future-ready.”

By integrating food and mobility into the travel experience, she said, the partnership benefits not only travelers but also the local communities that anchor the country’s tourism value chain.

A Taste of the Philippines Easier Journeys Between Cities

Food has always been a gateway to culture, and Grab is helping amplify this through its programs aligned with DOT’s gastronomy initiatives.

• Grab Dine Out, already popular in Metro Manila and now launched in Boracay, offers exclusive dine-in discounts that encourage visitors to explore both wellloved and hidden dining gems.

• GrabFood 5-Star Eats, the platform’s communityapproved food guide, puts the spotlight on homegrown culinary treasures, giving MSMEs a stage to shine.

• GrabFood For One, with curated solo meals starting at just Php 150 and free delivery, makes local flavors more accessible to budget-conscious travelers and solo explorers.

Together, these initiatives make it easier for travelers to savor authentic regional dishes, while giving local restaurants and food entrepreneurs a welcome boost in visibility and foot traffic.

Connecting Travelers, Empowering Communities

More than convenience, this collaboration between DOT and Grab represents a broader push

The partnership also addresses a long-standing traveler concern: getting around. Grab’s mobility services are geared toward making inter-city travel more reliable and stress-free.

• Advance Booking allows passengers to schedule airport rides up to 90 days ahead — or as close as just over an hour before departure — helping ensure timely arrivals for flights.

• GrabCar, available in 4- or 6-seater options, caters to both intra- and inter-city trips with upfront pricing, professional drivers, and safety features that set the standard for modern transport.

Grab’s coverage now extends to eight major airports nationwide, including Cebu, Bohol, and Davao, giving arriving tourists immediate access to trusted rides the moment they land.

toward a digitally enabled tourism ecosystem. For travelers, it means smoother experiences and richer discoveries. For communities, it promises more opportunities for small businesses to thrive and for local culture to take center stage.

As gastronomy and mobility converge through technology, Philippine travel becomes not just easier, but also more flavorful and inclusive — opening the door to adventures where every meal and every ride brings travelers closer to the heart of the islands.

Gaming

DEVELOPER PUBLISHER Gearbox Software 2K Games PLATFORM PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2

Seeking out a game that blends my two favorite game genres, namely the (J)RPG and first-person shooter (FPS), has always been exciting. Game developers seek to experiment with blending two (or more) genres in a blend of harmony that will make gamers remember it forever. The Borderlands series does a great job of this, and even throws in a hefty dose of humor to keep things cool in the heat of battle. As the shining example of the “looter-shooter” genre, can Borderlands 4 keep gamers happy while innovating enough to keep them wanting more?

Borderlands 4 brings us to a new planet, Kairos, where players must confront the Timekeeper, who reigns supreme over the planet in Dominion City. A brand new set of Vault Hunters appears on the planet and joins forces with the Crimson Resistance to revolt against the Timekeeper. The planet is divided into four regions: the Fadefields, Carcadia Burn, the Terminus Range, and Dominion City, home of the Timekeeper himself.

Borderlands games their unique qualities is Gearbox Software’s eccentric approach to making this franchise—weird can be good if all else comes together just right. Certainly, the humor may not appeal to everyone reading this. Still, you can’t help but laugh at all the random dialogue, appearance of the characters, and the ridiculousness of the enemies in appearance and actions. You get to pick from one of four Vault Hunters, and this largely depends on your playstyle. I went with Harlowe because manipulating the laws of physics in a shooter game has always appealed to me. For those who like getting up close and personal, one might choose Amon. If you like to kill things mindlessly, then Vex is a great choice; those who are into hitand-run tactics might choose Rafa as he can quickly flee from battles.

Gaming

The playstyle remains similar to previous installments, but some great quality-oflife changes and new abilities make the game more enjoyable. You can switch weapons quickly with the new weapon wheel, bringing more fluidity to combat. You can also dash and double jump, which is a huge boon for Rafa players as his toolkit relies a lot on hit-and-run tactics. A feature many will enjoy is the ability to reset boss battles, allowing you to gain lots of HP and farm rare items, but this is only available after you complete the main story.

One of my favorite new features is repkits, which allow you to heal during battle instead of trying to find health packs elsewhere. You can also summon vehicles to your location when you explore Kairos instead of hunting down Catch-A-Ride stations, which can get you somewhere if you’re lost (or impatient). You can even swap difficulties mid-game, which will allow you to take it easy or challenge you at your own discretion. There are also some smaller changes, such as a combat radar and a hologram path. The combat radar helps you strategize what will happen next.

One of my main complaints about the game is that it heavily leans into the looter aspect way too hard: for every awesome piece of loot you get, expect dozens of terrible items. This is not unique to the franchise or even video games themselves, but thankfully, the loot management system makes sure that inventory bloat doesn’t make this experience worse. The encounter rate is also ridiculous, but as someone who is used to playing and reviewing difficult games, it didn’t faze me in particular. I would understand if newer players did get frustrated with waves upon waves of enemies coming at you, but that’s simply what the Borderlands experience is.

The question remains: is it still the Borderlands experience we all know and love? In my nearly two decades of reviewing games, games in successful franchises can add new features to make them look like entirely different games and experiences, some for the better (think Final Fantasy ) or worse (Command & Conquer 4). In this case, the experience is rather varied and fun, and you can wildly experiment with what you have available. This makes this installment of Borderlands a return to form, even if it has many new additions to the game.

GAMING THREATS SPILL INTO APAC

Why stolen accounts put more than just players at risk

The Asia-Pacific (APAC) region has become the beating heart of global gaming, home to more than half of the world’s players and nearly 1.8 billion active gamers. But along with this dominance comes a growing problem: cybercriminals are setting their sights on the very platforms that make APAC such a powerhouse.

According to new research presented by Kaspersky’s Digital Footprint Intelligence (DFI) team during its Cyber Security Weekend in Da Nang, Vietnam, more than 11 million gaming account credentials were leaked in 2024 alone. Of these, 5.7 million belonged to Steam users, while another 6.2 million were tied to Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, GOG, and EA.

The Regional Breakdown

APAC players bore a heavy brunt of these breaches. Kaspersky found that:

• Thailand had nearly 163,000 stolen Steam credentials.

• The Philippines followed with 93,000 compromised accounts.

• Vietnam came in third with almost 88,000.

Meanwhile, China (19,000), Sri Lanka (11,000), and Singapore (4,000) saw lower—but still significant—numbers of compromised accounts.

For cybercriminals, the appeal is clear. “Even credentials stolen years ago can resurface on dark web forums, contributing to a growing pool of leaked information,” explained Polina Tretyak, digital footprint intelligence analyst at Kaspersky. “As a result, the number of compromised gaming accounts is likely much higher than what is immediately visible.”

Not Just a Gamer’s Problem

For many, stolen logins may sound like just another personal headache. But Kaspersky warns that the problem extends into business environments as well. Employees frequently register for personal services—including games, Netflix, Roblox, or Discord—using their corporate email addresses. The DFI study revealed that around 7% of leaked accounts tied to these platforms were linked to corporate emails.

This opens the door to far bigger risks. Once a corporate email is exposed, attackers can use it to phish employees, spread malware, or brute-force predictable passwords such as Word2025!—a process that may take under an hour. “Fraudsters may gain access to noncorporate systems under employee accounts and eventually retrieve important company data,” Tretyak noted.

In hybrid workplaces and bring-your-owndevice (BYOD) setups—now common across APAC—the danger compounds. The same laptop that runs a cracked game or cheat mod at home may also access sensitive files at work.

Anatomy of an Infostealer

Most of these compromises can be traced back to infostealers—malicious programs that disguise themselves as cracked games, mods, or cheat software. Once installed, they silently harvest:

• Gaming and email account passwords

• Cr ypto wallet credentials

• Credit card details

• Browser cookies

Stolen data is then sold, traded, or dumped for free on dark web forums, fueling a secondary economy of cybercrime.

Building Defenses

So how can gamers and businesses protect themselves from this growing threat? Kaspersky recommends:

• For individuals: Run full security scans, remove malware, change compromised passwords, and monitor for unusual account activity. Regularly update passwords and avoid reusing them across platforms.

• For businesses: Proactively monitor the dark web for leaked credentials, enforce strict password policies, and educate employees about safe use of corporate emails. Solutions such as Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence can provide early warnings of leaks and potential attack vectors.

The Bigger Picture

Gaming’s explosive growth in APAC shows no signs of slowing down. But as the region leads global gaming trends, it also faces an escalating wave of cyber threats that blur the lines between personal and professional life. The stakes go far beyond losing access to a favorite title—data leaks could spell reputational damage, financial losses, or even corporate breaches.

For gamers and companies alike, the message is clear: vigilance is no longer optional.

Unified Nationwide E911 System Brings Faster Emergency Response to Filipinos

When every second counts, access to quick and reliable emergency services can mean the difference between life and death. With the launch of the Unified 911 system, the Philippines now has a single nationwide hotline for police, fire, medical, and disaster emergencies— giving Filipinos greater peace of mind.

By dialing 911 from anywhere in the country, callers can be located in seconds, enabling first responders

to be dispatched within three to five minutes. This marks a major leap in public safety, as the system replaces over 30 fragmented local hotlines with one universal emergency number.

Next-Generation Technology for Public Safety

The Unified 911 initiative is a joint effort of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), PLDT

Enterprise, ePLDT, NGCS Inc., and NGA 911 Philippines, the local arm of U.S.-based NGA 911 LLC.

What makes this rollout groundbreaking is its adoption of ext Generation 911 (NG911) technology, already proven in the United States and Europe. Hosted on ePLDT’s Pilipinas Cloud and the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform, the system ensures reliability, resiliency, and scalability.

Key features include:

• GPS-based location tracking for faster, more precise dispatch.

• IP-based communication allowing voice, text, and video to be transmitted between callers and responders in real time.

• Centralized integration of the Philippine National Police, BFP, and local government emergency response units, with more agencies to be added in the future.

A Unified Effort for a Safer Philippines

Speaking at the launch on September 11, 2025, DILG Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla underscored that the system supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive under the Bagong Pilipinas governance framework.

“This nationwide platform allows us to unify our emergency response capabilities and ensure that help is just one call away for every Filipino,” Remulla said.

For NGA 911 LLC co-founder and CEO Don Ferguson, the project is more than just technology—it is about saving lives. “The system will help the DILG save more lives and empower more communities now that all systems have been unified into one nationwide solution,” he shared.

Robert Llaguno, NGA 911 Philippines country manager, added: “We have been entrusted to build the 911 missioncritical systems and communication facilities that will help save lives, protect property, and unify our first responder

communications. This partnership is aiming for nothing short of unparalleled service.”

Looking Ahead

The E911 rollout is envisioned to continuously evolve, bringing in additional government and privatesector agencies to further strengthen disaster preparedness and response. For Filipinos, this means one clear number to remember—911—and a greater assurance that help will always be within reach.

With 2.9 million learners, the Philippines is Coursera’s largest market in Asia.

SAGIP CPR: BUILDING A NATION OF EVERYDAY LIFESAVERS

Closing the Gap with Sagip CPR

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the Philippines, claiming nearly one in five Filipino lives. According to the Department of Health’s 2024 data, that’s an average of 317 deaths every day. Nearly half of these cases occur as Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)—a condition where the heart suddenly stops beating, cutting off blood supply to the brain and vital organs. Despite advances in medicine, SCA survival rates remain low, at just around 10%.

What makes this even more troubling is that 8 out of 10 cardiac arrests happen at home, often in the presence of loved ones. Yet, only 2 in 10 Filipinos know how to perform CPR. Every minute of delay reduces survival chances by 10%, but when performed within the first 4 to 6 minutes, hands-only CPR can double or even triple the likelihood of survival

Recognizing this urgent gap, Bell-Kenz Pharma launched the Sagip CPR Program in Cagayan de Oro on August 14, in collaboration with the Philippine Heart Association Northwestern Mindanao, PHINMA Cagayan de Oro College, the City Police Office, the City Scholars Association, and the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Department.

The program offered free CPR training to 500 participants, from students to civilian volunteers and police personnel. Using the Check–Call–Compress approach, Sagip CPR breaks down the process into simple, actionable steps that anyone can follow. Training also includes the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), devices that deliver an electric shock to restore normal heartbeat during cardiac arrest.

Making CPR Second Nature

“This is age-appropriate and involves psychomotor skills, so children can physically perform it,” explained Dr. James Cayetano, cardiologist and president of the Bell-Kenz Foundation. “Students from Grades 5 to 12 are already capable of learning this life-saving skill.”

Dr. Cayetano added that the program shares the government’s goal for CPR to become “second nature for every Filipino,” aiming to equip 1 million Filipinos with hands-only CPR training.

Sagip CPR will roll out nationwide over the next year, reaching schools, barangays, and civic groups until it meets its 1-million trained milestone. For cardiologist Dr. Francis Lavapie, past chair of the Philippine Heart Association Council on CPR, this expansion fills a crucial gap. “We have taught many people, and many are already teaching CPR, but still, it’s not enough — not everyone is reached,” he said.

Why This Matters

In 2016, Republic Act 10871 (Samboy Lim Law) was passed, requiring students to undergo ageappropriate basic life support training. More recently, Proclamation No. 511 declared July 17 as National CPR Day, emphasizing the need to make CPR knowledge accessible to everyone. Yet, implementation remains uneven, and too many households remain unprepared.

By pushing CPR out of classrooms and hospitals and into communities, Sagip CPR is building a network of “everyday heroes” ready to act when seconds matter most.

As Dr. Cayetano summed it up: “We’re building a country where help is never more than a few steps away.”

When someone collapses and is unresponsive, every second counts. Here’s a quick guide to hands-only CPR:

1. Check

• Tap the person’s shoulder and shout to see if they respond.

• Look for normal breathing. If none, act immediately.

2. Call

• Dial 911 (or local emergency hotline) right away.

• If others are nearby, ask someone to call and get an AED (automated external defibrillator) if available.

3. Compress

• Place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest, with your other hand on top.

• Lock your elbows and push hard and fast—at least 100–120 compressions per minute (think of the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees).

• Allow the chest to rise fully between compressions.

Remember: Don’t stop until professional help arrives, the person starts breathing normally, or you are too exhausted to continue.

WHEN NOT TO PERFORM CPR

While CPR can save lives, it’s important to know when it isn’t needed:

1. The person is breathing normally. If they are unconscious but breathing steadily, place them in the recovery position and monitor until help arrives.

2. There are clear signs of life. Movement, coughing, or any purposeful response means the heart is still working. CPR is not necessary.

3. Obvious signs of death. Rigor mortis, decapitation, or decomposition are situations where CPR will not help.

4. Unsafe environment. Do not put yourself in danger. If the scene is hazardous (fire, flood, traffic), wait until it’s safe or trained responders arrive.

5. Presence of a valid Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) order. In rare cases, a patient may have legal documentation requesting no CPR.

Tip: When in doubt, start CPR. It’s better to act than to hesitate. If the heart is still beating, chest compressions are unlikely to cause serious harm.

DIGITAL HEALTH ID

Imagine walking into a clinic without having to fill out long forms or recall every past prescription and lab result. For Filipinos, that future has arrived.

mWell, the digital healthcare arm of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC), has launched the country’s first fully digital Health ID, giving patients a secure way to carry their complete health records on their phones.

A Digital Passport for Your Health

Accessible through the mWell app, the Health ID acts as a personal health passport, storing medical history, prescriptions, vaccination records, lab results, and even emergency contacts. With built-in consent and privacy controls, users can choose when and with whom to share their information—whether at hospitals, partner clinics, or during online consultations.

“Healthcare is a basic human right,” said MPIC chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan. “The mWell Health ID is a crucial step towards universal healthcare, allowing Filipinos to move through their health journeys with security and peace of mind.”

For Chaye Cabal-Revilla, president and CEO of mWell, the launch marks a turning point. “Our digital Health ID empowers patients with a secure, seamless, and privacy-first way to manage their records. It directly addresses pain points by driving accessibility, efficiency, and collaboration in our healthcare system.”

Why It Matters

In a system long challenged by fragmented records and redundant paperwork, portability of data is key. With mWell’s Health ID, patients can register faster at clinics, reduce duplicate testing, and ensure that doctors have up-to-date information when making decisions.

Dr. Raymond Sarmiento, mWell’s chief operating officer, highlights the bigger picture: “By putting health records in the hands of every Filipino, we strengthen connections between patients and providers. The Health ID makes data portable, reliable, and truly useful.”

From Universal Health Care to Universal Access

The initiative supports the Universal Health Care Act (RA 11223), which envisions affordable, coordinated care for all. With the Health ID linked to the mWell app, patients can consult doctors virtually 24/7, receive e-prescriptions, and share results across facilities. For seniors, persons with disabilities, and residents in remote communities, this removes barriers of distance and cost.

Beyond the App: Care Without Borders

mWell’s ecosystem extends far beyond teleconsultation. The mWell Primary Care Facility in Bacoor, Cavite now allows Health ID users to skip paperwork for a seamless experience. Hospitals and clinics also benefit from mWell HealthSuite, a digital management system for booking and patient records.

And for Filipinos in far-flung areas, mWell has gone further. Through its partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), it has deployed OnTheGo Clinic-In-A-Bag kits to Indigenous Peoples, bedridden patients, and even soldiers in conflict zones. Complementing this are drone medicine deliveries to isolated islands and BangkaHealth boats bringing telemedicine to stilt houses in Sulu.

Building a Healthier Nation

As part of the MPIC Group, mWell aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, while also supporting the MVP Group’s Gabay Kalusugan advocacy. It envisions a future where care is not only reliable and data-driven but also inclusive—reaching even the most underserved.

SMARTER SMILES: HOW IS USING TO TRANSFORM

When you think of dental visits, the first thing that comes to mind is often the paperwork—authorization forms, approvals, and waiting times that stretch far longer than the actual check-up. For millions of Filipinos, this has long been a pain point in accessing timely dental care.

Maxicare Healthcare Corporation, the Philippines’ leading health maintenance organization (HMO), is tackling this head-on by becoming the first Philippine-based HMO to deploy Salesforce’s Agentforce, an AI-powered solution integrated into Service Cloud. The move is designed to streamline the Letter of Authorization (LOA) process, making dental visits smoother for both patients and partner clinics.

Faster Authorizations, Better Care

With a network of over 720 dental clinics nationwide, Maxicare is now using Agentforce to automate LOA requests. Instead of going through manual steps, clinics can interact with an AI agent, request authorizations instantly, and receive notifications once the LOA is ready.

For patients, that means less waiting and more time spent on what really matters—their health. For clinics, it reduces administrative bottlenecks, allowing dentists to focus on care rather than paperwork.

Fiona Victoria, Maxicare’s chief operating officer, explains: “We are constantly seeking innovative ways to deliver on our mission of providing peace of mind through quality healthcare. Streamlining operations empowers partner clinics to provide efficient care, and it strengthens our role as Filipinos’ preferred healthcare partner.”

USING AI DENTAL CARE

Human Expertise, AI Efficiency

The real promise of Agentforce lies in its ability to augment human teams. While it can generate LOAs and update customer profiles automatically, it also knows when to escalate complex cases to a live agent. This blend of automation and human judgment creates a more personalized and reliable experience for Maxicare members.

“Maxicare is at the forefront of healthcare transformation,” says Abraham Cuevas, Salesforce’s regional vice president and country manager for the Philippines. “With Agentforce, they’re not just automating—they’re combining human expertise with AI power to deliver efficiency, reduce costs, and build stronger member relationships.”

What This Means for Wellness

For members, the impact is immediate: shorter wait times, fewer forms, and faster access to dental services. But the broader story is how technology is steadily reshaping wellness in the Philippines. By embedding AI into everyday healthcare processes, Maxicare is showing how innovation can support prevention, convenience, and peace of mind.

XPRESS SUPER APP EARNS SPOT ON FORBES ASIA'S 100 TO WATCH LIST

Filipino innovation took the spotlight as XPRESS Super App announced its inclusion in Forbes Asia’s prestigious “100 to Watch” 2025 list. Selected from thousands of entries across the Asia-Pacific region, the recognition marks XPRESS as one of the most dynamic and promising platforms in the region.

XPRESS leadership—president Cliff Cabungcal, CEO Nathan Taylor, Chief of Staff Alyssa Mae Duldulao, and Head of Expansion Robert Belda— welcomed the acknowledgment as both validation of their rapid growth and as a reminder of their larger mission.

“Recognition was never the goal. Our North Star has always been to create livelihood for drivers and build a multiplier effect—where a single driver can grow into an entrepreneur, hiring and mentoring others,” said XPRESS president Cliff Cabungcal.

A Trajectory of Success

Founded in 2023, XPRESS Super App has charted one of the fastest growth stories in Philippine tech. What began as a bold mobility startup quickly scaled into a multi-vertical super-app connecting Filipinos across transport, lifestyle, and fintech.

Key milestones include:

• Mobility Expansion – Operating 2-wheel and 4-wheel ride-hailing in Metro Manila and Bataan, with sustainable e-trike loops in Boracay, and upcoming expansion into Palawan.

• Innovation in Green Transport – Pioneering the country’s first electric taxi pilots, pushing clean mobility solutions in step with

global sustainability goals.

• Upcoming Services – Preparing to roll out XPRESS Eats & Mart, XPAY (a digital wallet with Cebuana Lhuillier), and XPRESS Activities, a lifestyle marketplace linked to tourism.

This trajectory reflects not just market growth but cultural relevance, with XPRESS integrating into the daily lives of Filipinos while creating inclusive opportunities for drivers, partners, and local businesses.

Looking Ahead

XPRESS is preparing a new Metro Manila feature that aims to further strengthen its presence on Philippine roads. Details will be announced soon, but leadership underscored that every innovation is guided by the same vision: making services more accessible, reliable, and proudly Filipino.

CEO Nathan Taylor emphasized that the company’s rise comes from

tackling challenges rooted in local realities.

“We’re not just building an app. We’re building a platform Filipinos can own and trust, one that reflects their needs and amplifies their pride,” Taylor said.

Recognition as Validation

For XPRESS, being named to Forbes Asia’s “100 to Watch” list is less of a destination than a milestone. With support from strategic partners like Cebuana Lhuillier, the company is positioned for scale, longevity, and sustained impact.

Cabungcal put it simply: “Being on this list is a milestone, but our journey continues. Guided by our North Star, XPRESS Super App will keep building—bigger, smarter, and always Filipino-first.”

PAG-IBIG FUND LAUNCHES

ACQUIRED ASSETS SUPER SALE

Pag-IBIG Fund is urging occupants of its acquired properties to legitimize their tenure by purchasing the homes they currently occupy, now made more affordable through a 10 percent discount under its ongoing Acquired Assets Super Sale. Buyers may choose among three available payment options, namely cash, short-term installment, or a Pag-IBIG Housing Loan. The offer runs from August 25 to December 14, 2025.

The offer applies to occupied properties currently in Pag-IBIG Fund’s acquired asset inventory, and forms part of the agency’s efforts to promote homeownership under the Marcos Administration’s Expanded Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino, or Expanded 4PH Program.

“We are taking all available steps and launching the necessary initiatives to help Filipino workers gain homeownership, consistent with the vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in providing access to dignified and secure housing for all,” said Secretary Jose Ramon P. Aliling, chairperson of the Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees and head of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development.

“We recognize that our members face different circumstances that call for tailored solutions. That is why we are addressing their varied needs through this campaign by giving current occupants of our foreclosed properties the opportunity to become legitimate homeowners.”

Under the program, eligible occupants who receive an Invitation to Purchase or Lease (ITPL) from Pag-IBIG Fund may buy the homes they currently occupy. Those who are issued an ITPL during the promotional period shall enjoy a 10 percent discount.

They may choose to purchase the property through cash, short-term installment of up to 12 months, or a Pag-IBIG Housing Loan. For members opting to avail of the housing loan, those with limited income may apply with co-borrowers to help meet the required income. Meanwhile, original borrowers whose accounts were previously cancelled or foreclosed may also seek approval from the agency to qualify for another loan under the program.

“This is the best time for occupants of our acquired properties to take the step toward legal homeownership,” said Pag-IBIG Fund chief executive officer Marilene C. Acosta. “With the 10 percent discount under our Super Sale, they can purchase the homes they already live in at a more affordable price. This allows them to finally secure legal ownership of the property and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with it.”

Acosta emphasized that proceeds from these sales are plowed back into PagIBIG Fund’s programs, staying true to the agency’s founding principle of mutual benefit among members.

“Every peso we recover from these units helps us serve more members,” she said. “The amounts originally loaned out to acquire these homes

came from the collective savings of our members. So when current occupants purchase these properties, the funds return to Pag-IBIG Fund and allow us to help even more Filipino workers who also dream of having a home of their own. This is part of how we continue to fulfill our mandate of making homeownership affordable for every Filipino worker.”

The Pag-IBIG Fund Acquired Assets Super Sale, launched in August, features more than 30,000 foreclosed properties with special discounts under various modes of purchase. For unoccupied properties, buyers may avail of up to 35 percent discount for cash purchases, up to 25 percent for installment terms, and up to 15 percent for housing loan takeouts. For properties that are occupied, discounts are up to 40 percent for cash payments, up to 30 percent for installment, and up to 20 percent for housing loan takeouts. Meanwhile, current occupants of foreclosed properties may purchase the homes they are living in through direct sale and enjoy a 10 percent discount.

Interested buyers may access the full list of properties and view the stepby-step process for submitting offers through Pag-IBIG Fund’s online platform at www.pagibigfundservices. com/OnlinePublicAuction

T urbo G rafx-16

The video game crash of 1983 highlighted numerous problems in the video game market: oversaturation, lack of quality control, and third-party developers releasing low-quality games. By the late 1980s, the market had made a significant recovery, with Nintendo and Sega leading the way in terms of popularity and sales. Others looked to cash in on this recovery, most notably Japanese electronics company NEC, which had vast experience in the PC market and was then among the world’s leading PC manufacturers, and Hudson Soft, a popular video game developer that had produced video games as far back as 1978. The meeting of these minds, on paper, should have created a powerful alternative to Sega and Nintendo, and (in theory) motivated everyone to make better consoles. This partnership culminated in the TurboGrafx-16/PC

Engine, the first 16-bit console ever released. Would this technological advantage raise all ships, or would the NEC/Hudson Soft partnership sink its own?

The idea of bits largely existed in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a marketing tool used to indicate the console’s power. In technical terms, bits are defined by the data width of the console’s main CPU, which indicates the amount of data it can process simultaneously. This meant that a 16-bit CPU could process twice as much data as an 8-bit CPU, and thus create better games due to better processing power. NEC had already developed the PC-88 and PC-98, but lacked experience in manufacturing gaming consoles. Hodson Soft attempted to enter the hardware market by proposing an add-on for the NES/Famicom in 1985, which would have utilized then-advanced graphics chips to play games with Bee

Cards. Nintendo initially liked this concept, but found it to be financially unviable for two reasons: the technology was too expensive, and Nintendo would have to pay royalties to Hudson Soft per Bee Card sold. This is where NEC and Hudson Soft’s partnership began.

NEC and Hudson Soft created a smaller, more aesthetically pleasing console, the TurboGrafx-16, which used Hudson Soft’s Bee Card technology (known as HuCards or TurboChips), a cartridge the size of a credit card but slightly thicker (credit cards are about 0.76mm thick, while a HuCard was about 2.4mm to 3mm thick). At the time, video game cartridges were enormous because they had to protect the PCB with a large plastic housing to dissipate heat. On the other hand, HuCards had a rigid, glossy polymer that conducted heat. Part of the HuCard was left partially

exposed to dissipate heat with less obstruction. The console was released in Japan on October 30, 1987. Some other specs of the console included a 7.16 MHz HuC6280, 8 KB of RAM, and 64 KB of VRAM. The TurboGrafx-16 sold 500,000 units in its first week of release in Japan. But as legendary singer Frank Sinatra said, the best was yet to come.

By 1988, they sought to go further by releasing a CD-ROM add-on known as the TurboGrafx-CD. While most video game console add-ons failed commercially and/or critically (the Sega 32X, which narrowly lost out on my topic choice for this month’s Relic, or the ill-fated Nintendo 64DD that never made its way outside of Japan), the TurboGrafx-CD sold 60,000 units in its first week and was also the first video game console to use CD-ROMs as a storage media, an astronomical leap considering their competition was only using cartridges. Other addons would come for the TurboGrafx-16, including the Super CD-ROM in 1991, an upgraded version of the TurboGrafx-CD, and the Arcade Card in 1994. The generic controllers were called the TurboPads and were similar to the NES controllers. There was even a force feedback accessory called the Virtual Cushion released in 1992, allowing you to feel enemy attacks through sound vibrations. This predated the PlayStation’s DualShock controllers by five years.

The TurboGrafx-16 would also make its way to North America in 1989, selling at US$199 (USD518.44 today), with the CD add-on also available for USD399.99 (USD1,042.06 today). Many other variations of the console came out, such as the TurboExpress in 1990. This was a handheld version of the console that had a TV tuner adapter and an active-matrix color LCD screen, considered the most advanced of all the handheld consoles at the time. By 1991, the LT version of the console came out, which was essentially the TurboGrafx-16 in laptop form. It was extremely

expensive, only released in Japan, and is now a collector’s item (as of this writing, I saw one on eBay that sold for USD1,999 plus shipping). Other variants combining add-ons and the console itself also came out between 1989 and 1994. Third-party models also existed, such as the PC-KD863G, a CRT monitor with a TurboGrafx-16 built in. This was released on September 27, 1988, and had an RGB output as opposed to RF and composite, giving it a clearer screen. However, it came with no add-on support. This variant is even rarer—a quick check on eBay as of this writing shows one for sale at a whopping USD13,000.

But what exactly doomed the TurboGrafx-16? What made it become an afterthought in the minds of gamers today? The console sold 10 million units, more than other consoles that many people remember, such as the Sega Saturn (9.26 million) and the Sega Dreamcast (9.14 million). Despite a long list of innovations, namely the first console with a CD-ROM add-on and a then-ahead-of-its-time force feedback accessory, the answer is rather obvious: a lack of marketing. Sega’s failures were due to innovating too far ahead of our time and supporting loads of consoles simultaneously, but they did have exceptional marketing. Second was a lack of first-party support. Third, there were not many memorable games for the system (unless you really want to dig into the past like I do), as many were ports of arcade games such as the original Street Fighter and Galaga ‘88. The rest were mostly horizontal or vertical-scrolling shooters. Some RPGs, such as Falcom’s Ys I & II and Victor Entertainment’s The Legendary Axe, also gained recognition, with the latter winning Electronic Gaming Magazine’s RPG of the Year award in 1993. While the legacy of the console lives on through emulation after its discontinuation in 1994, the Nintendo Virtual Console, and even a release of a TurboGrafx-16 Mini in 2020, a few more steps were needed to truly give Sega and Nintendo a run for their money.
