“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.” ~ 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 (ESV) ~ Two special days in one week. That’s what we have this week between September 6th and September 13th — Labor Day came last Monday and Patriots Day on this Friday. For some it may mean one or two extra days off work. A time to picnic and play, a time to work in the yard or hike around a lake. Labor Day is just fun. We took a day off from work because we do work (I’m still trying to figure that one out!). It’s the unofficial end of the long, hot days of summer. It’s the time of year that we begin many new and renewed activities in our lives. It launches us into all of the great activities of the fall season. But on the heels of Labor Day comes Patriot Day — the day we now remember those who died on that fateful day — September 11, 2001. 2,977 victims included 246 on the four planes (from which there were no survivors), 2,606 in the World Trade Center and in the surrounding area, and 125 at the Pentagon. Nearly all of those who perished were civilians with the exceptions of 72 law enforcement officers, 343 firefighters, and 55 military personnel who died in the attacks. That tragedy still tears at our hearts after 19 years.
