“Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice…” ~ 1 Samuel 15:22 (ESV) ~
WHO DO YOU OBEY?
Ken Galbraith was a Harvard economics professor who also served as an advisor to four presidents: Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, and Johnson.
In his autobiography, ALife in Our Times, he tells a story about Emily Wilson, his family’s housekeeper...
It had been a wearying day, and I asked Emily to hold all telephone calls while I had a nap.
Shortly thereafter the phone rang. President Lyndon Johnson was calling from the White House.
“Get me Ken Galbraith. This is Lyndon Johnson.”
“He is sleeping, Mr. President. He said not to disturb him.”
“Well, wake him up. I want to talk to him.”
“No, Mr. President. I work for him, not you.”

When I called the President back, he could scarcely control his pleasure. “Tell that woman I want her here in the White House.”
One can hardly imagine saying ‘No’to the President of the United States, but Ms. Wilson understood as an employee of the Galbraith family whose orders she was expected to obey. For her, then, the choice was easy.
We must all make a similar choice. We’ll never lack outsiders telling us how we should live our lives, most of them well-meaning. But at some point each us must decide: Whom will I obey?
“But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than men.’” ~ Acts 5:29 (ESV) ~
Weekly, daily, hourly, even moment by moment we must choose whom we will obey. Beyond all the noise of our daily lives, let’s choose to listen to the voice of the One who is most worthy of our obedience.
Blessings on your new week. Why not take a few moments and consider who you have most often been listening to and obeying this past week. See you Sunday as we continue with IMMERSE. We are in the POETS of the Old Testament. This Sunday we will look at ACrash Course on How Not to be a Slacker.
