“To this I will appeal: ‘the years of the right hand of the Most High.’ I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds. Your ways, O God, are holy. What god is so great as our God? You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples. With your mighty arm you redeemed your people...” ~ Psalm 77:10-15 (NIV) ~ “When life is most uncertain… we turn to that which is most certain — (wait for it…) SCIENCE!” You have most likely been seeing and hearing that statement on television for the past couple of weeks. They are the first words of a T.V. advertisement produced by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. They are spoken over a video of a machine filling test tubes. Now I have no great beef with Pfizer — or with science or even scientists. I am especially glad they exist and do their work. In fact, my daughter Courtney has a B.S. degree in Biology. My family has been greatly blessed by scientists who have done extensive research and pharmaceutical developments in the area of cancer drugs and radiation treatments. My concern is the growing belief that science — or any other pursuit of men for that matter — was, is, or can be “that which is most certain” in our world. I know that our fear of what we face today can lead us to put our faith in what our best and brightest minds can accomplish. It is not wrong to pray for our scientists to be successful in finding a cure for Covid-19 — or any other of the myriads of diseases that we face today. But don’t miss the point here. We are not putting our faith in science. We are not praying to scientists. We are praying to the “One who is most certain”. The One who makes science seem so certain. The One who created the order of our universe. The One who gives the scientists their research breakthroughs. That One is not any pharmaceutical company. It is not any group of scientists. That One is Jesus Christ! He is the One who spoke everything we know and experience into being. He is the One who spoke order into our universe and world. He is still the One who is the true giver of the hope we so eagerly look for today.
